An S Pen that “won’t connect” may not be defective: writing uses the pen’s digitizer functions, while Air actions and other remote controls use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and some S Pens support neither wireless features nor charging. Identify the exact Galaxy device and pen, determine which function failed, then use the matching charging, connection, and cross-test steps below.
First determine what actually failed
Samsung sells S Pens with different capabilities. A pen can write normally even when it has no Bluetooth pairing, battery percentage, or Air actions. Conversely, a BLE-capable pen may stop responding to its button or gestures while its tip still writes. Treat these as separate faults instead of assuming that every S Pen must pair or charge.

Before changing settings, write down the Galaxy phone or tablet model and the S Pen model. Samsung’s current model guide lists pens that differ in writing, Bluetooth, Air actions, and charging support, so a missing option is not automatically a failure. The lineup can change as new devices are released; the official Samsung US support information used for these steps was checked on October 13, 2026.

Find the host device and pen models
- On the Galaxy device, open Settings > About phone or Settings > About tablet and record the model name and model number.
- Look for the pen’s model information on its packaging, purchase record, or the model marking supplied with the pen. An integrated phone pen and a separately sold S Pen can have different wireless and charging behavior.
- Compare those two model numbers with Samsung’s current S Pen compatibility information. Confirm each capability separately: writing, hover, button, BLE/Air actions, and charging.
Do not try to add Air actions to a pen that was designed without BLE, and do not interpret the absence of a charging icon as a dead battery on a model that never charges. Some current S Pens provide writing only; others provide writing and wireless controls but no rechargeable battery.

Separate a connection problem from a writing problem
Open a note and make a short mark. If the mark appears, the digitizer connection is working even if the Air command panel says the pen is disconnected. If the mark does not appear, focus on physical compatibility and cross-testing first; Bluetooth resets cannot restore a tip that the tablet does not recognize.
Fix charging and battery-indication problems
Use only the charging method intended for the specific pen. Forcing a different method can leave the battery unchanged and can make a working pen appear faulty.

Reseat the pen and check the battery correctly
- Remove the pen from its slot or tablet charging area.
- Inspect the designated area for a case, accessory, debris, or misalignment that prevents full contact. Remove a third-party cover temporarily if it changes how the pen sits.
- Reinsert or reattach the pen in the model-specific orientation shown above, and leave it seated long enough for the device to recognize it.
- For a BLE-capable pen, open the Air command menu, select its Settings, and check the battery percentage. The percentage may be absent while the pen is not connected wirelessly; absence alone does not prove a failed battery.
- If the pen is low or the device is trying to establish a connection, do not place the phone or tablet on a wireless charging pad during this test. Samsung warns that charging-pad signals can interfere with S Pen charging or connection.
If the exact model supports charging, the pen is correctly seated, and no battery indication appears after the device has had time to recognize it, continue with the wireless checks and then cross-test the pen. If the model does not support charging, skip battery-replacement or charging-pad remedies.

Restore Air actions and other wireless remote features
These steps apply only to S Pens that support BLE and Air actions. They do not add wireless capability to a writing-only pen.
1. Keep the pen within range
Keep the pen close to the phone or tablet with a clear path between them. Samsung Support states: "In order for Air actions or Remote features to work, the S Pen needs to be within 30 feet of your phone or tablet with nothing in between." Wireless functions can disconnect when the pen moves beyond that range. Test beside the device rather than across a room, and avoid placing the pen behind a thick object or inside a bag.
2. Turn off settings that stop the connection
- Turn Airplane mode off.
- If Power saving mode is active, open its options and make sure Limit apps and Home screen is not enabled. That restriction can prevent the background behavior required for remote features.
- Remove a third-party case, folio, magnetic accessory, or other cover temporarily. If recognition returns without it, the accessory is obstructing the pen or its charging/communication area.
3. Check Air command permissions
Open the device’s app-permission controls for Air command and allow Nearby devices and Physical activity. The exact page can vary by One UI release, but searching Settings for “Air command” or opening Settings > Advanced features > S Pen will take you to the relevant controls. Denying either permission can stop wireless remote functions even when the pen still writes.

4. Reconnect after changing the conditions
With Airplane mode off, the power-saving restriction disabled, permissions allowed, and any interfering cover removed, place the pen in its phone slot or tablet charging area if that is how the model reconnects. Keep it near the device and open Air command again. Test the button or a known Air action only after the pen shows as connected.

A reset can clear a corrupted wireless configuration, but it is not a universal repair and it removes customized remote settings. On models that expose the option, use:
Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > More options > Reset S Pen

Confirm the reset, then reconnect the pen and recreate any customized Air actions or other remote settings. The reset option may not appear on models without BLE or Air actions. If your pen has no wireless capability, looking for or forcing a reset is wasted effort; return to the compatibility and writing tests instead.
When the S Pen will not write
Writing failure is different from a Bluetooth failure. Samsung’s model-specific support material does not provide one cleaning, recalibration, or repair sequence that applies to every Galaxy phone and tablet, so avoid treating an unverified tip-cleaning or calibration trick as a guaranteed fix.
Use this safe sequence
- Confirm that the pen is intended for the exact Galaxy model and that writing support is listed for that combination.
- Remove a screen protector, case edge, magnetic accessory, or other third-party item temporarily if it could affect pen recognition. Test on the bare screen in a simple note app.
- Check whether touch input from a finger works in the same area. A completely unresponsive screen points toward the host device rather than the pen.
- Try the original pen on another known-compatible Galaxy device. Do not assume that every S Pen works with every Galaxy product; use a device confirmed as compatible.
- Try a known-good compatible S Pen on the original phone or tablet.
If the original pen writes on the second compatible device, the first device needs attention. If it fails there as well, the pen is the stronger suspect. If neither pen writes on the original device, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center for the host device. Stop using the pen if its tip, body, or battery housing is physically damaged rather than attempting an unapproved repair.

Cross-test to identify the failed component
Two controlled tests are more useful than repeatedly pairing the same combination.

“Compatible” matters in both tests. Samsung notes that many S Pens share touch, hover, and button compatibility across some other devices, but compatibility is not universal and wireless features can differ even when writing works.
Choose replacement or service only after diagnosis
Replace the pen when the pen fails the cross-test
If your pen fails on a second compatible device while a known-good pen works on your original device, replacement is reasonable. Search for a Samsung S Pen replacement using the exact Galaxy model, then verify the listing’s compatibility before ordering. Match the functions you actually need:

- Hover and button: useful for pointer previews and supported shortcuts.
- Bluetooth/Air actions: required for remote camera controls, presentation controls, and other wireless commands.
- Charging: required only if you want a rechargeable pen that reports or maintains a battery on your model.
Do not buy a generic listing that says only “S Pen” without naming your device. A replacement can fit physically yet lack BLE, Air actions, charging, or full writing compatibility.
Seek device service when the host fails the cross-test
If a known-good compatible pen also fails on your phone or tablet, contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider. Tell them which pen models you tested, whether finger touch works, whether the device recognizes the pen at all, and whether the failure affects writing, wireless features, charging, or more than one function. That information prevents support from treating a wireless-only problem as a screen failure or vice versa.

- Test writing. If writing works, troubleshoot wireless features separately. If it fails, remove accessories and move to cross-testing.
- Use the correct charging method. Insert a supported phone pen, attach a supported tablet pen in the right orientation, or charge S Pen Pro over USB-C. Skip charging steps for non-charging models.
- For wireless failures, stay within 30 feet, turn Airplane mode off, disable the “Limit apps and Home screen” power-saving restriction, allow Air command’s Nearby devices and Physical activity permissions, and remove third-party covers.
- Reset only if the option exists. Expect customized remote settings to return to defaults.
- Cross-test both directions. Use a known-compatible device and a known-good compatible pen.
- Act on the result. Replace a pen that fails elsewhere; arrange device service when multiple compatible pens fail on the original host.
