An “Server Overloaded” warning usually means the Enshrouded server cannot complete simulation work quickly enough, not that total CPU or RAM usage has reached 100 percent. Check per-core CPU load, player-slot pressure, memory, storage, and network reachability separately. Then reduce slotCount, correct the server configuration, or move to hardware that matches Keen Games’ player-count recommendations.

What an overloaded Enshrouded server actually means
Enshrouded server performance has three largely independent limits:

- Simulation capacity: world updates, AI, physics and player activity must finish within each server tick. A busy core can cause lag while the operating system reports modest total CPU usage.
- Memory and storage capacity: the process needs RAM, and the world must be saved regularly to a responsive disk with enough free space.
- Network reachability: firewall, router, Steam-port or DNS problems can prevent discovery or joining. They are connection problems, not proof of a CPU bottleneck.
“Rubber-banding” and delayed actions usually point to simulation or network delay. A server that does not appear in the browser, refuses connections or disconnects immediately requires reachability checks first. Record which symptom occurs, when it begins, how many players are online, and whether players in different regions see the same problem.
Use Keen Games’ capacity baselines before changing settings

CPU frequency and per-core headroom matter because a server can be limited by one busy thread even when the average across all cores looks low. Compare the machine’s sustained, real-world clock speed rather than only its model’s boost headline. Keep operating-system services, backups and other game servers from competing with the Enshrouded process.
The player figures are active players, not merely accounts permitted to join. A six-slot server with two people online normally has less player-driven work than the same server at six simultaneous players. Conversely, a very active settlement can expose a limit before the nominal slot count is reached. Treat the table as a starting capacity test: fill the server gradually, repeat the same activity, and leave some CPU headroom instead of planning for continuous saturation.

Understand the server’s memory and save workload
Keen’s FAQ reports approximately 4.4 GB of physical RAM for an idle server, up to 100 MB of additional physical memory per player, and no more than 6 GB of total physical RAM for the server in the stated conditions. A 16 GB machine therefore has room for the game process and the operating system, but leaving no headroom for updates, antivirus scans, databases or other services can still create paging and stutter.
World saves are produced every five minutes. Individual saves can be about 1 MB to 100 MB, with large bases tending toward the upper end. Keep the world and log directories on an SSD, preserve free space beyond the 30 GB installation recommendation, and include the save directory in a separate backup. Disk capacity does not replace CPU simulation time: adding storage cannot cure an overloaded tick.
Memory figures are not a license to allocate every remaining gigabyte to unrelated services. Watch the Enshrouded process, total committed memory and paging activity while players are online. If memory pressure appears only during a backup, update or antivirus scan, reschedule that task before buying hardware. If the process remains within the expected range but one core is consistently busy, RAM is unlikely to be the first fix.
Diagnose the warning in a controlled order
1. Capture the conditions
- Write down the time of the warning and the number of connected players.
- Note what everyone was doing: entering a large base, fighting, loading a new area, or simply standing still.
- Ask whether the failure is rubber-banding, slow actions, a server-browser discovery failure, or an inability to complete a join.
- Watch the Enshrouded server process while the warning is visible. Check each logical CPU core, total RAM, disk activity and network throughput rather than relying on one overall CPU percentage.
A warning that appears only when the population or activity rises is evidence of a capacity limit. A warning that coincides with a router restart, firewall change or DNS failure belongs in the network branch below.
Take several observations rather than one screenshot. Record a quiet baseline, a normal play session and the moment the warning appears. Note whether every player sees the delay or only users on one connection. This separates a host-wide simulation stall from a route-specific problem and gives you a reproducible test after each change.

2. Compare the host with the official baseline
For four to six active players, compare the host with the 3.2 GHz six-core/12-thread recommendation. For a server configured for 16 players, use the stronger 3.7 GHz eight-core/16-thread reference instead. Confirm that the server is installed on an SSD and that at least 30 GB is free. Measure upload capacity at the host, not only the internet plan’s download speed; the guideline is 2 Mbit/s for every active player.
If a single core is saturated while others are idle, lowering the player count or moving to a higher-frequency CPU is more relevant than adding RAM. If the system is paging, memory pressure or competing applications must be addressed first.
Do not compare a provider’s advertised core count alone. A host with many slower virtual cores may deliver less useful per-thread performance than one with fewer, faster cores. Ask a provider which CPU resources are allocated, whether cores are shared, where the machine is located, and how many slots the plan supports. Those details matter more than a generic “gaming” label.

The clearest official control for player-driven load is slotCount in enshrouded_server.json. The documented range is 1–16. Lowering the value reduces the maximum simultaneous player workload and can mitigate CPU or RAM bottlenecks.
- Stop the server cleanly and make a backup of
enshrouded_server.jsonand the world-save directory. - Open
enshrouded_server.jsonin the server installation directory with a text editor that preserves JSON syntax. - Find the
slotCountproperty and set it to the number of players the host can reliably support, from 1 through 16. - Save the file, confirm that commas, quotation marks and braces remain valid, and restart the server.
- Repeat the same load test with the reduced population. Observe per-core usage, memory and the warning rather than assuming the change worked.

Lowering slots is reversible, so use it as a diagnostic as well as a long-term policy. If a warning disappears at four players but returns at six, you have demonstrated a capacity relationship. Tell players the new limit before changing it, and raise it only after a repeat test under the same world conditions.
4. Repair a stale or malformed configuration
A malformed JSON file can stop the server from booting or leave settings inconsistent after an update. If the file is missing, the server creates a fresh one. If an old file was incorrectly updated, Keen recommends deleting it and allowing the server to generate a new configuration.

- Stop the server and copy the existing JSON to a safe backup location.
- Delete the live configuration only when you are prepared to reapply settings.
- Start the server once so it creates a new file.
- Stop it again, reapply only documented settings such as
slotCountand your chosenqueryPort, then restart. - Review startup logs for parsing or port errors before inviting players.
This process removes obsolete keys without sacrificing the original file as a rollback copy.
Never edit the file while the server is writing it, and avoid changing several unrelated options during one test. A single-variable change makes the result clear and limits the chance of losing a working port, password or world setting. Keep the backup with a date and a short note describing the change.
Separate network reachability from simulation lag
Ports and firewall
The default query port is 15637. The configured query port must match the host firewall and any router port-forwarding rule. Enshrouded also requires additional Steam ports; opening only the query port is not sufficient for every connection path.
- Confirm that the server is listening on the intended query port.
- Allow the server executable through the operating-system firewall on the correct network profile.
- If the host is behind a router, forward the configured query port and the required Steam ports to the host’s fixed local address.
- Check that another application is not already using the selected port.
A port or firewall fault explains a server that cannot be discovered or joined. It does not establish that the CPU is overloaded, so do not keep upgrading hardware while reachability remains unverified.

Steam and DNS checks
For connection and discovery problems, follow Keen’s troubleshooting sequence: clear Steam’s download cache and flush DNS when appropriate, then restart Steam and the server. These steps can remove stale discovery or name-resolution state, but they will not increase simulation capacity. If players can join yet experience synchronized rubber-banding during heavy activity, return to the CPU, slot and memory checks.
A wired connection can make the host link more consistent, especially when Wi-Fi interference causes packet loss, but a Cat6 cable cannot repair a CPU-bound simulation. Likewise, increasing an internet plan’s download speed does not automatically provide the upload capacity required by the active-player guideline. Test the host’s actual upstream rate and stability.
Keep saves, bases and storage from becoming hidden constraints
Because saves occur every five minutes, a large world can create regular disk writes. Large bases can produce saves approaching 100 MB. Use an SSD with substantially more free space than the 30 GB installation recommendation, and avoid placing the save directory on a nearly full or heavily shared drive.

- Back up the world before changing the configuration or performing an update.
- Keep at least one recent backup outside the live server directory so a damaged save does not overwrite every copy.
- Watch disk latency and free space during the five-minute save interval.
- Do not mistake a save-related pause for a permanent CPU limit; compare the timing across several save cycles.
Base size and player activity can increase workload, but there is no universal base-size threshold that guarantees an overload warning. Measure the host under the actual world and player count.

Backups also have a cost in disk space and I/O. Schedule large copies when the group is offline, retain enough generations to recover from a bad update, and verify that a backup can actually be opened or restored. A backup that exists only on the same failing disk is not a complete recovery plan.

Keen’s 2026 FAQ says it partnered with GPORTAL for in-game dedicated-server rentals and that other providers can also be used. Availability, geography, pricing and included resources vary, so confirm those details for the region and slot count you need. A managed host still cannot guarantee that every custom world or base will avoid overload; the underlying CPU allocation and player limit remain important.
For cost comparisons, count the whole operating burden rather than just a monthly headline. Self-hosting may use hardware you already own, but electricity, a reliable upstream connection, replacement storage, backups and your maintenance time are real costs. Hosting converts much of that work into a recurring fee. Before switching, compare the provider’s slot limit, CPU generation or allocation, SSD space, backup frequency, location, cancellation terms and support process. Do not pay for sixteen slots if your group normally uses four, and do not choose a cheap plan whose CPU allocation cannot meet the relevant baseline.
A repeatable maintenance routine
After the server is stable, keep a short operational routine:
- Check free SSD space and backup age before updates.
- Review logs after restarting and confirm the expected query port is listening.
- Record the largest concurrent player count and whether warnings occurred.
- Test a restore from a recent world backup periodically.
- Recheck per-core CPU, memory and upload usage after adding a large base or increasing
slotCount.
This record turns future warnings into comparisons with a known-good state. It also makes a report to Keen more useful because you can provide timestamps, player count, activity and the exact configuration in effect.

When the documented fixes do not solve it
If the host meets the relevant CPU, RAM, SSD and upload recommendations; the player count is within slotCount; the JSON is valid; and ports are reachable, collect logs and a precise reproduction description. Include the world’s approximate player count, the activity that triggers the warning, hardware details, operating system, configuration changes and timestamps. Report the issue through Keen Games’ official bug-report path rather than presenting an unverified CPU percentage or a community anecdote as a guaranteed diagnosis.

There is no published universal CPU-utilization threshold or guaranteed fix for every “Server Overloaded” warning. Treat unusual behavior on a particular operating system, compatibility layer or unusually large base as a hypothesis to measure, not as a rule that applies to every server.

Why does Enshrouded say Server Overloaded when CPU usage is low?
Overall CPU percentage averages all cores. One logical core can be saturated by simulation work while other cores are idle. Watch per-core usage and the Enshrouded process during the warning, then test a lower slotCount or a faster sustained-clock CPU.
How much RAM does an Enshrouded dedicated server need?

slotCount sets the maximum simultaneous players in enshrouded_server.json. The documented range is 1–16. Lowering it is Keen’s clearest configuration step for reducing player-driven CPU or RAM load.
Which port should I open for an Enshrouded server?
The default query port is 15637, but Enshrouded also needs additional Steam ports. Match the configured port with the host firewall and router forwarding rules, and verify that another application is not using it.
Can a new SSD or network cable fix an overloaded server?
An SSD can improve loading and save I/O, and wired networking can improve link reliability. Neither adds simulation time to a CPU-bound server. Measure per-core CPU use before treating either as the primary fix.
Should I self-host or rent a server?
