Most overheating laptops do not need immediate replacement. Start by making airflow safe, cleaning the accessible vents, identifying any runaway workload, selecting a cooler power mode, and installing the correct Windows, driver, and BIOS updates. Then run the laptop maker’s thermal controls and fan diagnostics. If it remains dangerously hot while idle, throttles, shuts down, reboots, or fails a fan test, arrange service before deciding whether replacement is more economical.
Do not keep using a machine that is smoking, smells of burning, or has a swollen chassis or battery. Shut it down, unplug it, and move it away from flammable materials.

Why a laptop overheats
Heat is produced whenever the processor, graphics hardware, storage, or charging circuitry uses power. The cooling system must move that heat through the heatsink and out of the chassis. Overheating occurs when air cannot enter or leave, software keeps the hardware under sustained load, firmware applies unsuitable thermal behavior, or a cooling component is failing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Blocked airflow: A blanket, pillow, cloth, paper, lap, or cluttered desk can cover an intake. Dell cautions that using a laptop on these surfaces can cover the fan air intake and cause overheating.
- Dust on cooling fins: Dust restricts the narrow passages where the fan pushes air through the heatsink.
- Heavy or stuck software: A single application, background process, or large collection of startup programs can consume most of the CPU. Games, video work, indexing, updates, and browser tabs can also create sustained load.
- Aggressive power settings: A performance-oriented Windows mode can increase power use and heat. Microsoft notes that it can also drain the battery faster.
- Outdated firmware or drivers: BIOS conflicts, old chipset or graphics drivers, and outdated thermal software can produce poor fan behavior or inefficient power management.
- Failing cooling hardware: A worn fan, damaged heatsink, blocked fin stack, or degraded thermal interface can prevent heat from leaving the processor.
There is no universal temperature number that proves every laptop is overheating. Limits differ by processor, chassis, workload, and manufacturer. A laptop that feels warm during a demanding task may be operating normally; heat at idle, repeated throttling, thermal shutdowns, unexpected reboots, or a failed fan test are more useful warning signs.

First, make the laptop safe
Shut down for dangerous symptoms
Turn the laptop off immediately if the case is dangerously hot, smoking, producing a burning smell, or visibly swollen. Disconnect the charger and do not restart it to “check” whether the problem has gone away. A swollen battery requires professional handling; do not press on the case or attempt to puncture or flatten it.
Move it to a hard, open surface
If there is no immediate danger, shut down or pause the current work and place the laptop on a desk or other hard, level surface. Keep every visible intake and exhaust clear. Do not use it on bedding, a pillow, cloth, paper, or a lap where your body or fabric can seal the intake. Leave space around side and rear exhausts, and do not push the machine against a wall or pile of books.
Check whether the heat is workload-related
After airflow is safe, note when the heat appears. A brief temperature rise during a game or export is different from a fan that runs loudly while the desktop is doing nothing. This distinction determines whether to investigate software first or move quickly to hardware diagnostics.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
1. Clean the external vents before opening the chassis
- Save your work, shut down the laptop completely, unplug the charger, and disconnect accessories.
- Locate the bottom, side, and rear vents. Use the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for your exact model.
- Use a can of compressed air or an electric air duster on accessible vents. Keep the nozzle at the distance recommended by the equipment manufacturer; do not press it directly against a grille.
- Use short bursts and work around the vent openings. The aim is to dislodge dust without forcing a large clump deeper into the chassis.
- Allow loose dust to settle, then inspect the openings again before reconnecting power.
HP’s heat guidance states that you do not need to open the computer to clean its vents and illustrates compressed-air cleaning of a bottom vent. External cleaning is therefore the appropriate first intervention for most users. Opening the case can damage clips, cables, seals, or warranty coverage and should wait until basic airflow checks and diagnostics point to an internal service need.

2. Find the process keeping the hardware busy
- In Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, sort by the CPU column, then check GPU and memory when those columns are available.
- Look for a process that remains near the top for several minutes while you are not intentionally performing a demanding task.
- Close only applications you recognize and have saved. Do not terminate an unfamiliar system process simply because its name looks technical.
- If the load returns, identify the application, update it, disable an unnecessary startup item, or investigate it for a stuck job or unwanted software.
Dell identifies a single application, a background process, or many startup programs using most of the CPU as common software causes. Microsoft likewise recommends monitoring resource usage and heavy processes. If the processor load falls and the fan quiets after a known application closes, the cooling system may be functioning normally under the earlier workload.
3. Select a cooler Windows power mode
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Find the power mode control and choose a balanced or recommended setting when maximum performance is not required.
- Use the performance-oriented setting only when you need its additional responsiveness and have adequate airflow.
- After changing the mode, observe fan behavior and battery drain during the same task that previously caused excessive heat.
Microsoft explains that reducing performance can lower power consumption and heat. Its guidance also warns that a performance setting can make the device run warmer and drain the battery faster. A power-mode change is reversible, so it is a safer diagnostic step than changing thermal material or firmware settings at random.
4. Install operating-system, driver, and BIOS updates
- Install pending Windows updates and restart when Windows requests it.
- Visit the support page for the exact laptop model and install the current chipset and graphics drivers supplied for that model and operating-system version.
- Install the latest BIOS offered for the exact model, following the maker’s power and battery instructions. Keep the charger connected and do not interrupt a BIOS update.
- Restart and retest the laptop under the workload that produced the heat.
Dell includes driver, BIOS, and Windows updates in its first-line overheating workflow. HP recommends BIOS updates when a fan is noisy or runs constantly. Do not use a BIOS file intended for a similar-looking model: firmware is model-specific, and an interrupted or incorrect update can make the computer unbootable.

5. Use the manufacturer’s thermal profiles
Many laptops expose cooling behavior through a vendor utility or BIOS menu. Names and available options vary by model:

- Dell: Power Manager or Dell Optimizer can provide thermal profiles on supported systems. BIOS thermal-management options may also control fan and performance behavior.
- HP: Command Center or CoolSense can provide thermal profiles on supported systems. HP also documents fan-noise troubleshooting.
Choose a quiet, cool, or balanced profile for ordinary work and reserve an aggressive performance profile for sustained workloads with clear airflow. A BIOS thermal-management setting can override a Windows or vendor-utility profile, so check both layers if a change appears to have no effect. Never assume that an option shown in a guide exists on every model.
6. Run the built-in fan and hardware diagnostics
Use the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics, including a fan test when available. Dell documents SupportAssist fan tests; other manufacturers provide equivalent diagnostics through their support software or startup diagnostics. Record whether the test passes, fails, or cannot run.
A failed fan test is stronger evidence of a hardware problem than an audible fan alone. A fan may run loudly because the system is under load, while a failing fan may spin intermittently, make grinding noises, or fail to move enough air. Use the test result, the idle behavior, and the shutdown history together rather than relying on sound as the only measure.

An internal inspection may find a fan that no longer reaches speed, a heatsink packed with dust, damaged fins, a loose fan cable, or a degraded thermal interface. HP’s service documentation treats thermal grease as part of the thermal solution and describes thermal service as maintenance work. The correct procedure differs by model: screws, cable routing, heatsink pressure, and thermal-material specifications are not interchangeable.
Thermal-paste replacement is advanced work
Replacing thermal paste or another thermal-interface material can help when the heatsink contact has deteriorated, but it requires opening the chassis and removing the cooling assembly. A technician must clean both contact surfaces, apply the correct amount and material, reconnect the fan, and tighten the heatsink evenly in the specified order. An amateur repair can leave an air gap, contaminate nearby components, strip screws, or damage a connector. Attempt it only if you have model-specific service instructions and the necessary tools; otherwise, pay for qualified service.

Overheating alone is not a replacement decision. First document what happened and what changed: the surface used, idle and load behavior, Task Manager findings, updates installed, thermal profile selected, and diagnostic result. A repair is usually the sensible next step when the machine is otherwise adequate and the likely fault is a fan, dust-clogged heatsink, or thermal interface.

Replacement becomes reasonable when a technician confirms a cooling or motherboard fault whose repair cost is uneconomical, when required parts are unavailable, or when the laptop remains unreliable after professional service. Also weigh age, battery condition, operating-system support, storage health, and whether its performance still meets your needs. Do not replace a functioning laptop merely because its fan is audible during a legitimate heavy workload.

Risk and reversibility of common interventions
- Lowest-risk, most reversible: move the laptop to a hard surface, clear obstructions, close a known heavy application, and select a balanced or recommended power mode.
- Low-risk with care: clean accessible vents while powered off and unplugged, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Model-specific but normally reversible: install Windows, chipset, graphics, and BIOS updates; select vendor thermal profiles; run diagnostics.
- High-risk and not easily reversible: open the chassis, remove the heatsink, replace thermal paste, or replace a fan. Use model-specific documentation or a qualified technician.
This order matters: begin with airflow and software, then use diagnostics to justify internal work. It limits the chance of turning a solvable ventilation problem into a damaged chassis or interrupted firmware update.
Prevent the problem from returning
- Use the laptop on a hard, unobstructed surface every time, not only when it becomes hot.
- Keep dust from accumulating around accessible vents and clean them according to the maker’s schedule and instructions.
- Review startup programs and investigate any process that repeatedly consumes high CPU or GPU resources when you are not using a demanding application.
- Keep Windows, chipset and graphics drivers, BIOS, and manufacturer thermal utilities current for the exact model.
- Use a balanced or recommended power mode for ordinary work; switch to a performance profile only for tasks that need it.
- Run the manufacturer’s fan or hardware diagnostic after unusual noise, persistent idle heat, throttling, or a shutdown.
