What error 0x8007007E means
Windows uses HRESULT 0x8007007E when a required module cannot be found or loaded. Outlook itself does not assign one universal cause to this number. The failing component might be an Outlook add-in, an Office library, a damaged profile, a third-party integration, or another module-loading problem. The code is therefore a diagnostic clue, not a diagnosis.

Google’s GWSMO error table gives the most specific interpretation: when GWSMO reports 0x8007007E, it typically could not load the Outlook libraries it needs, including MAPI DLLs. Google recommends repairing Office and, if that does not resolve the missing libraries, uninstalling and reinstalling Office. That explanation applies to GWSMO installations; it does not prove that every Outlook crash with this code is a MAPI failure.

Identify the Outlook installation before troubleshooting
The correct branch depends on the application that is failing. Classic Outlook is the desktop program that exposes the traditional ribbon and uses Outlook profiles, PST files, and OST files. New Outlook for Windows is a separate application with a different architecture and settings. GWSMO is an integration installed alongside classic Outlook to synchronize a Google Workspace account. A third-party add-in can introduce its own DLL dependencies.

Step 1: Capture the complete error and protect your data
Write down the full error before dismissing it. A code without its accompanying sentence can point to the wrong component. Record whether Outlook fails at launch, when a particular folder opens, while sending, or only after a delay. If the dialog lists a DLL, copy its file name and path exactly. For GWSMO, preserve the relevant trace-log entry rather than relying on memory.
- Confirm whether the code is
0x8007007E, not a similar-looking number. - Record whether the installation is classic Outlook, new Outlook, or classic Outlook with GWSMO.
- Note the Windows version and the Office or Microsoft 365 build shown in the account or product information screen.
- List add-ins, synchronization tools, antivirus integrations, and recent Office or Windows updates.
- Before profile work, determine whether mail is on the server or in a local PST. A local PST should be backed up before you remove a profile.
These details let you undo a change and help support staff distinguish an add-in crash from a missing Office component. Do not delete a profile or PST while trying to make Outlook start; first establish where the data is stored.
Step 2: Start classic Outlook in Safe Mode
Microsoft describes Safe Mode as a startup mode that loads Outlook without add-ins. It is the fastest way to separate an add-in failure from a broader Outlook or Office problem.

- Close every Outlook window. If Outlook appears stuck, wait for it to exit or end the Outlook process in Task Manager.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
Outlook /safeand select OK. Include the space before/safe. - If Outlook asks which profile to open, choose the profile you normally use.
- Leave Outlook open long enough to reproduce the action that normally causes the crash, such as opening a folder or composing a message.
Safe Mode is a diagnostic test, not a permanent operating mode. It does not prove that Office is healthy; it only removes add-ins from the startup path. If the crash disappears, continue to the add-in isolation procedure. If the crash remains, skip directly to Office updates and repair.
Step 3: Isolate the add-in when Safe Mode works
When Safe Mode is stable, an add-in is the leading suspect. Microsoft’s guidance is to continue through File > Options > Add-ins when Outlook does not crash or hang.
- Start Outlook normally. If it crashes immediately, return to Safe Mode for the disabling step.
- Open File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom of the window, set Manage to COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Clear the check box for every active COM add-in and select OK.
- Restart Outlook normally and test the action that previously failed.
- Re-enable one add-in, restart Outlook, and test again. Repeat until the crash returns or all add-ins have been tested.
The add-in that reproduces the failure should remain disabled while you check for an update or reinstall it. If its vendor supplies a repair procedure, use that procedure. Do not remove unrelated DLLs or make registry changes merely because an add-in is listed. If disabling all COM add-ins does not change the crash, the problem is probably outside that add-in group; proceed to Office repair.

Step 4: Update Office before repairing it
Install pending Microsoft 365 or Office updates before changing the installation. A current build may contain a fix for a startup or library-loading defect, and updating is less disruptive than a full repair.

- Open any Office application that remains usable, such as Word.
- Go to File > Account (the label may be Office Account in some perpetual editions).
- Under Office Updates, select Update Options > Update Now when that control is available.
- Allow the update to finish, close the Office applications, restart Windows, and test Outlook again.
If no Office application will stay open, use Windows’ installed-programs control panel to reach the repair commands instead. Keep a record of the current Office version and whether the update changed the behavior; that information is useful if you need the advanced troubleshooter later.
Step 5: Repair the Office installation
Microsoft’s usual order is Quick Repair first and Online Repair second. Both repair Office components, but Online Repair is the more extensive option and can take longer.
Run Quick Repair
- Close Outlook and all other Office programs.
- Open the Windows installed-programs control panel (often Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features).
- Select your Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office entry and choose Change (or Modify).
- Select Quick Repair, then select Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test Outlook in normal mode.
Escalate to Online Repair
If Quick Repair does not stop the crash, repeat the same path and choose Online Repair. Save work first and expect Office applications to close during the process. After it completes, restart Windows, open Outlook, and test without re-enabling any add-ins that were previously implicated.
Repair changes Office program files; it does not automatically prove that an Outlook profile or a third-party DLL is healthy. If Outlook still fails after Online Repair, continue with a profile test and the integration-specific branches below rather than repeating the same repair indefinitely.

Step 6: Test a new Outlook profile safely
A damaged profile can cause startup or folder-opening crashes even when Office files are intact. Creating a temporary profile is a controlled test. It does not require deleting the existing profile.
- Close Outlook.
- Open Control Panel > Mail. If Control Panel is in category view, search for Mail.
- Select Show Profiles, then select Add.
- Give the test profile a distinct name and follow the account setup prompts.
- In When starting Microsoft Outlook, use this profile, choose the new profile, or select it when Outlook starts.
- Test startup, folder navigation, and the action that previously caused the crash.
If the new profile works, the original profile is a strong suspect. Recreate accounts and settings in the working profile rather than immediately deleting the old one. Microsoft warns that removing a profile also removes references to its associated data files. Confirm that mail, contacts, calendars, and archives are stored on the server or that every local PST has been backed up and can be opened before removing the old profile.
If the new profile crashes in the same way, profile corruption is unlikely to be the sole cause. Return to the Office, add-in, or integration branches and preserve the profile for comparison.

Use this branch only when Google Workspace Sync for Microsoft Outlook is installed and its trace log or error dialog reports 0x8007007E. Google explains that this instance means GWSMO could not load required Outlook libraries, including MAPI DLLs.

- Confirm that classic Outlook and GWSMO are the applications involved; new Outlook does not make this a GWSMO diagnosis by itself.
- Close Outlook and any other Office applications.
- Run Office Quick Repair using the installed-programs control-panel path above.
- Restart Windows and test GWSMO and Outlook.
- If the MAPI-library error persists, run Online Repair.
- If the required libraries still cannot load, uninstall and reinstall Office as Google’s error guidance recommends. Reinstall GWSMO only when its own installation is damaged or its documentation directs you to do so.
Keep the GWSMO trace entry, Office version, and account type available if you need support. Do not treat a GWSMO MAPI error as evidence that every Outlook installation needs a registry edit or a profile deletion.
Step 8: Handle a named third-party add-in only with its documented procedure
Some integrations ship their own DLLs and registration requirements. For example, SuperOffice documents a case in which its Outlook Ribbon is not loaded: the documented checks include verifying the redemption.dll path, re-registering that DLL, or repairing or reinstalling Office.
That procedure belongs to the SuperOffice integration and its documented installation layout. Apply it only when SuperOffice is actually installed and its Ribbon failure matches the documented symptom. Do not copy a DLL path, registration command, or registry change from that procedure to an unrelated Outlook installation. If Safe Mode identifies a different add-in, use that vendor’s current instructions instead.

What to do when classic Outlook still crashes
After Safe Mode testing, add-in isolation, Office updates, Quick Repair, Online Repair, and a safe profile test, use Microsoft’s advanced Outlook troubleshooter or Support and Recovery Assistant. These tools can collect installation and profile diagnostics that are difficult to obtain manually. Run them after the basic branches so their results are not obscured by an enabled add-in or a pending Office update.
- Keep the exact error text and any named DLL available.
- State whether Safe Mode worked, whether a new profile worked, and which repair level you ran.
- Identify GWSMO or another integration rather than reporting only “Outlook crashes.”
- Do not remove the original profile or local PST until its data is confirmed safe.
New Outlook versus classic Outlook
The Outlook /safe command, COM Add-ins dialog, Mail profile control-panel applet, and PST/OST profile workflow are classic Outlook procedures. New Outlook for Windows is a different application, so a classic Outlook fix may not apply. Verify the application name and version first, capture its complete crash text, and use the support and repair controls provided for that app. If the same computer has both applications, test the one named in the error rather than assuming they share the same installation.
Common mistakes that prolong the crash
- Assuming the code identifies one cause: 0x8007007E can represent different module-loading failures. The full message and failing component matter.
- Skipping Safe Mode: Repairing Office before checking add-ins can leave the actual trigger enabled.
- Deleting the profile first: Profile removal removes data-file references and can complicate access to local PST content.
- Applying GWSMO advice to every user: MAPI-library guidance is specific to the GWSMO branch.
- Editing the registry or registering a DLL copied from another guide: Registration paths are vendor- and installation-specific; a wrong DLL can create a new failure.
- Testing only once: Reproduce the original action after each change so you know which step altered the behavior.
When the repair is complete
Consider the problem resolved only after Outlook starts normally, opens the folders or account that previously triggered the crash, and remains stable through a restart. Re-enable verified add-ins one at a time. If a particular add-in brings the crash back, leave it disabled until its vendor supplies a compatible update or reinstall. Keep the successful test profile until you have confirmed that all required mail and local archives are available.
The practical decision rule is straightforward: Safe Mode working points to add-ins; Safe Mode failing points toward Office, a profile, or a shared library; a GWSMO trace naming 0x8007007E points specifically toward MAPI loading; and a vendor-named DLL requires that vendor’s procedure. No prevalence figure or incident count has been established for this error, so the code should be treated as a clue rather than a measure of how common the crash is.
