If an older PC game won’t launch, first check the game publisher or storefront for an update or title-specific fix. Then try Windows’ Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. If the error names a missing DirectX file, asks for the original CD, or changes when background programs are disabled, follow the matching troubleshooting path below. The right fix depends on the game, its edition, and the exact error; these steps are diagnostics, not a guarantee.
Before troubleshooting, record the game and error details
Write down the exact game title and edition, where it was installed from, and the full error message. To identify your Windows version and build, open Start, type winver, and press Enter. Note whether the game stopped working after a Windows or driver change. These details help you avoid applying instructions meant for a different release.

Check for an official update or title-specific instructions
Look on the publisher’s official support page or the storefront where you obtained the game. Search using the exact title and error message, and check for a patch, compatibility note, or installation instructions. Microsoft advises checking for an updated version when an app did not come from Microsoft Store; for Store apps, check for updates in the Store. Microsoft’s older-app compatibility guidance explains these starting points. Prefer official instructions over community patches or unofficial installers.
Try Windows compatibility troubleshooting
Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow the prompts for the game, apply any suggested setting, and test whether it launches.
This path is documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Changes to Windows architecture, security features, or system requirements can affect older software, including after an operating-system upgrade. The troubleshooter may help, but it cannot make every old game compatible.

Test compatibility mode cautiously
For an older desktop game, compatibility mode is another option to test. Microsoft includes a compatibility-mode example in its legacy app-crash guidance, but that example does not establish one Windows version setting as correct for every game. Change one setting at a time, test, and undo it if the result gets worse.
If the error mentions DirectX or a missing DLL
Open Start, type dxdiag, and press Enter to inspect DirectX information. A newer DirectX version on the PC does not necessarily include every older DirectX 9 component a game expects. Microsoft documents a legacy case involving a missing d3dx9_35.dll and points to the DirectX End-User Runtime. Microsoft says this runtime does not replace the newer DirectX version installed with Windows. Use Microsoft’s official guidance for this kind of error; do not download individual DLL files from third-party aggregators. The named DLL is an example, so match the advice to the file in your actual error.

If the game asks for the original CD
Some older disc-based Microsoft games use copy protection that requires the original game CD to be in the drive. Copying the game’s files to a hard drive or another storage location does not necessarily remove that requirement. Microsoft’s disc-check guidance applies to the specific games listed there; check support for your own title before assuming it uses the same protection.

Check that the drive supports the disc format and interface you need, and confirm the game’s support information: an external drive may not resolve every legacy copy-protection incompatibility.

If the launch problem seems intermittent, test for background conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so you can check whether background software is interfering. It is a diagnostic test, not a game fix on its own. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions. If the game behaves differently in a clean boot, restore normal startup and investigate the service or program responsible. Do not broadly disable security protections as a workaround.

If the general steps do not help, contact the game’s publisher or storefront and provide the exact title and edition, Windows version and build, installation source, full error text, and troubleshooting steps you tried. Older releases can have title-specific installation, disc-check, or compatibility requirements that general Windows instructions do not cover.
