How to Fix an iPhone That Won’t Charge with a MagSafe or Qi2 Charger

Start by fixing the power path and alignment: connect the MagSafe or Qi2 charger to a suitable adapter, remove the case and anything between the phone and pad, then center the iPhone and wait for the charging icon. If charging still does not start, check temperature and Battery settings, test another known-good charger and adapter, and follow Apple’s restart sequence before arranging service.

These checks apply whether the symptom is no charging icon, intermittent charging, unusually slow charging, or a battery percentage that stops near 80 percent. The exact fix depends on the iPhone generation, charger version, adapter, case and current temperature, so avoid judging a charger by its label alone.

1. Confirm what “won’t charge” means

Wireless charging problems are not all the same. An iPhone may show no charging icon, connect and disconnect as it moves, charge unusually slowly, stop near 80 percent, or display a charger warning. The symptom determines which check is most useful, so watch the screen for a few seconds after every placement.

  • No icon at all: check power, alignment, the case and objects between the phone and charger first.
  • Starts and stops: suspect movement, a marginal adapter or cable, heat, or an object interfering with the charging coil.
  • Stops around 80 percent: inspect temperature and charging-limit settings before assuming the charger has failed.
  • Very slow charging: verify the iPhone model, charger certification, adapter rating and whether the charger is actually MagSafe or Qi2 rather than a basic Qi pad.
  • Warning in Battery settings: read the message and note whether it identifies an incompatible charger or a charging pause.

Leave the phone on the charger long enough to observe a change. A momentary vibration or animation is not proof that the battery is receiving sustained power; check again after several minutes without moving the phone.

Apple MagSafe Charger (2 m): Wireless Charger with Fast-Charging Capability
  • The MagSafe Charger makes wireless charging a snap. The perfectly aligned magnets attach to compatible iPhone models. The MagSafe Charger provides faster wireless charging up to 25W when paired with a 30W power adapter.
  • The MagSafe Charger is certified for Qi2.2 and Qi charging, so it can be used to wirelessly charge your iPhone 8 or later, as well as AirPods models with a wireless charging case.
  • Available in two cable lengths: 1 meter and 2 meter.

2. Rebuild the charging path from the wall to the iPhone

A wireless pad cannot charge a phone if its own power supply is interrupted or under-specced. Use the adapter and cable recommended by the charger maker, plug the adapter directly into a working wall outlet, and make sure every connector is fully seated. For Apple’s MagSafe Charger, connect the charger to power before placing the iPhone on it. Apple says this lets the charger verify that maximum power delivery is safe. If you placed the phone first, remove it, wait three seconds, and place it back.

  1. Unplug the wireless charger and inspect its cable, USB connector and adapter for bent pins, fraying, cracks or heat damage.
  2. Try a different wall outlet. If the adapter has a detachable cable, test a cable known to work with another device.
  3. Reconnect the adapter firmly, then connect the wireless charger.
  4. Place the iPhone on the powered charger and wait several seconds for the battery icon to show charging.

Do not assume that a USB adapter with a familiar connector supplies the input the pad needs. A lower-capacity or incompatible adapter can make a charger appear dead or can reduce its available charging rate. Compare the adapter’s output with the charger maker’s stated requirement, and use the manufacturer’s recommended combination for the first diagnostic test.

Apple’s MagSafe instructions explain that the charger should be face up on a flat surface, away from metal objects and foreign material. On a Qi or Qi2 pad, place the iPhone face up at the center or at the location identified by the charger maker. A phone that is a few centimeters off-center may not couple reliably. Stands and vehicle mounts can also shift the phone when the car moves, so test on a stable, flat surface before blaming the iPhone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Remove cases, wallets and other interference

Take the case completely off for the first test. Thick cases, metal plates, magnetic rings that are not designed for the charger, and battery cases can reduce or block the magnetic field. Remove anything lying between the iPhone and the charging surface, including a wallet, card holder, pop socket, paper, dust or a second phone.

Apple specifically warns against placing payment cards, security badges, passports and key fobs between an iPhone and a MagSafe Charger. Remove a MagSafe wallet before charging. On a charging mat, movement can break the connection, so keep the phone still while testing.

With the case removed, place the iPhone on the pad again. If it charges bare but not in its case, the phone and charger are probably working; replace the case or use one explicitly designed for that charging system. A case advertised as “magnetic” is not automatically suitable: it should be listed as compatible with MagSafe or Qi2 and should not contain a metal plate that sits over the coil.

If a card or badge has been left between the phone and charger, remove it before trying again. Besides interrupting charging, the magnetic field can affect some cards, passes and key fobs. Keep those items away from the charger during every test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check temperature and Battery settings

Charging can pause in extreme temperatures. Move both the iPhone and charger to a cooler, dry location away from direct sun, a car dashboard, a radiator or other heat source. Do not put a hot phone in a refrigerator or freezer; let it cool naturally. Charging may also be limited above 80 percent when the battery is too warm.

Apple MagSafe Charger (1 m): Wireless Charger with Fast-Charging Capability
  • The MagSafe Charger makes wireless charging a snap. The perfectly aligned magnets attach to compatible iPhone models. The MagSafe Charger provides faster wireless charging up to 25W when paired with a 30W power adapter.
  • The MagSafe Charger is certified for Qi2.2 and Qi charging, so it can be used to wirelessly charge your iPhone 8 or later, as well as AirPods models with a wireless charging case.
  • Available in two cable lengths: 1 meter and 2 meter.

Open Settings > Battery and look for a charging pause, a configured charge limit or Optimized Battery Charging. These features can explain why the percentage does not continue upward even though the charger is connected. An 80-percent stop is therefore not, by itself, proof of a defective MagSafe or Qi2 charger.

Allow the phone to cool before comparing charging speed. A warm device may accept power more slowly or pause temporarily, so comparing it with a cool phone can produce a misleading conclusion about the charger. Remove the phone from direct sunlight and avoid covering it with clothing or bedding while it charges.

Apple’s current charge-speed guidance says iOS 26 can show an incompatible-charger message in Settings > Battery when it detects a connected charger that is not charging. Read that message before replacing hardware; it may identify a compatibility or power problem. Record the exact wording if you contact Apple, since it helps distinguish a setting or accessory issue from a phone fault.

5. Test with a known-good combination

Substitute one component at a time so you can identify the failed link. Changing everything at once may restore charging, but it will not tell you whether the adapter, cable, pad or iPhone caused the failure.

  1. Keep the same iPhone and charger, but use a different compatible power adapter and cable.
  2. Keep the same adapter, but test another compatible wireless charger.
  3. Remove the case and repeat both tests with the phone centered and stationary.
  4. If possible, test the charger with another compatible iPhone and test your iPhone on a different charger.

For an iPhone 8 or later, a Qi-certified charger is a useful baseline comparison. Apple recommends MagSafe or Qi2-certified wireless charging when faster wireless charging is the goal, but the actual rate depends on the exact iPhone model, charger version, adapter and system conditions. A successful test on another charger points toward the original charger, cable or adapter; failure on several known-good chargers points toward the phone or its software.

If the iPhone is connected to USB power, it will not use wireless charging at the same time. Disconnect the wired cable before judging a MagSafe or Qi2 test. Otherwise, you may incorrectly conclude that the wireless pad is inactive when the phone is simply using the cable.

Use a charger whose certification and compatibility are documented, not merely one described as “fast.” A Qi-certified pad can establish whether basic wireless charging works, while a MagSafe or Qi2-certified model can test magnetic alignment and the faster-wireless path. Neither comparison guarantees a particular speed on every iPhone.

6. Understand compatibility before judging charging speed

“MagSafe,” “Qi2” and “Qi” describe related but different capabilities. Apple says an iPhone 8 or later supports Qi-certified chargers. MagSafe adds magnetic alignment on supported iPhone models, while a MagSafe Charger can also charge other Qi-compatible iPhones without magnetic attachment. Qi2-certified chargers provide magnetic alignment for compatible devices, but support and speed still vary by iPhone generation and charger.

What to compare Why it matters What is established
iPhone model Determines whether magnetic alignment and a particular peak rate are supported. iPhone 8 and later support Qi-certified charging, according to Apple’s wireless-charging guide.
Charger type MagSafe and Qi2 can align magnetically; basic Qi generally requires manual positioning. Apple recommends MagSafe or Qi2-certified wireless charging for faster wireless charging.
Adapter output The adapter can limit the power available to the charger. Use the charger maker’s required adapter; do not assume any USB adapter delivers the advertised rate.
Charger version Different MagSafe generations and firmware can have different limits. Apple lists up to 25W peak MagSafe power only for specified iPhone models, adapter ratings and MagSafe versions; actual power varies.
Case and mount Thickness, metal and alignment accessories can weaken coupling. Test without the case and remove wallets or cards.

The “up to 25W” figure is a peak specification for particular combinations, not a guarantee for every iPhone, adapter or charging session. Check the model-specific information in Apple’s MagSafe guide, the charge-speed article and the charger maker’s compatibility list before buying hardware.

Older iPhones can still charge on a MagSafe puck without magnetic attachment when they support the Qi standard. That does not mean they receive the same peak power as a model with full MagSafe support. A Qi2 label likewise does not override the iPhone’s own limits, the adapter’s output or a temperature-related reduction.

7. Follow Apple’s no-charge restart sequence

When power and placement checks fail, use Apple’s general procedure rather than repeatedly moving the phone on the pad. This sequence also helps distinguish a software hang from a hardware fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Try another known-good power source and confirm that the wall connection and adapter connection are firm.
  2. Restart the iPhone normally.
  3. Inspect the wireless charger, cable and adapter for visible damage. Replace a damaged accessory instead of continuing to test it.
  4. Leave the iPhone on the charger for 30 minutes.
  5. If it still shows only a battery icon or will not power on, perform the force-restart procedure for that iPhone generation.
  6. After the force restart, leave it charging for another 30 minutes.

Apple’s full instructions are in “If your iPhone or iPod touch won’t charge.” That article also describes cleaning debris from the wired charging port. Port cleaning is relevant to a cable-charging problem, not a substitute for fixing wireless alignment; never insert tools or liquid into the iPhone as an improvised wireless-charging repair.

If the battery is completely depleted, the screen may remain blank for a while. Keep the setup connected for the first 30-minute interval instead of repeatedly lifting the phone to check it. After the force restart, repeat the full second interval even if a battery symbol appears briefly.

8. Diagnose the result of each test

The charger works only without the case

The case is blocking or misaligning the magnetic field. Use a thinner, non-metal case made for the charger system, or remove the case while charging. Do not keep payment cards or access badges between the phone and charger. If the case has a removable wallet section, test with that section detached as well as with the entire case removed.

Another adapter fixes the problem

The original adapter or cable is inadequate, damaged or incompatible with the charger’s required input. Replace it with the rating specified by the charger maker rather than choosing a wattage solely from a marketing claim. Keep the successful adapter combination documented so a future cable swap does not recreate the fault.

Another wireless charger works

The original charging pad, its cable or its adapter is the likely fault. Check the original setup once more with the correct adapter; if it still fails, replacement is more appropriate than changing iPhone settings. If the original pad works only when perfectly centered, its alignment or coil may be marginal even if it is not completely dead.

No wireless charger works, but a cable does

After removing the case, cooling the phone and restarting it, persistent failure across known-good chargers suggests a problem with the iPhone’s wireless-charging hardware or software. Arrange Apple support rather than buying several more pads. Include the model, iOS version, chargers tested and whether the phone displays any charging animation.

Wired and wireless charging both fail

Use Apple’s 30-minute, force-restart and second 30-minute sequence. If the iPhone still will not charge or power on, Apple says service may be needed. Stop using any accessory that is visibly damaged or becomes abnormally hot during the test.

Charging is intermittent on a mat or stand

Keep the phone still, remove the case and check that the pad is on a stable surface. Movement can interrupt a mat connection, and a mount can shift the coil away from the recommended position. Test the same charger on a flat surface to separate a mounting problem from a charger problem.

9. Decide whether buying a different charger is worthwhile

A new charger makes sense only when testing identifies the current charger, cable, adapter or compatibility as the problem. It cannot repair a damaged iPhone or guarantee a particular charging speed.

  • For magnetic alignment on a supported iPhone, look for an Apple MagSafe Charger or a Qi2-certified wireless charger explicitly listed as compatible with your model.
  • Verify the required USB-C power adapter rating and whether it is included.
  • Check that your case, vehicle mount or stand does not place metal between the phone and coil.
  • Ignore a generic “fast wireless” label unless the product identifies its certification, supported iPhone models and required adapter.

Compare products on five points: iPhone model support, certification, magnetic alignment, required adapter output and the expected rate for that exact combination. Also check whether your existing case is approved for the system. Buying a higher-rated adapter alone will not turn a basic Qi pad into a MagSafe charger or fix a phone with a failed charging component.

Apple’s MagSafe accessories guide and the charger manufacturer’s compatibility list are the appropriate places to confirm support. Exact charging power remains conditional on the phone, adapter, charger version and system temperature.

10. When to stop troubleshooting and seek service

Contact Apple or an authorized service provider when the iPhone will not charge on multiple known-good wireless chargers after the case, temperature, power and restart checks; when both wired and wireless charging fail; when the phone or charger becomes unusually hot, smells burned or shows physical damage; or when the phone repeatedly shuts down during charging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up the iPhone if it still turns on, record which chargers and adapters you tested, and mention whether the failure is constant, intermittent or limited to a percentage range. That information helps a technician separate an accessory fault from a phone fault. Do not open the iPhone or attempt a battery or coil repair yourself; wireless charging components and the battery require proper service procedures.

Quick decision checklist

  • Is the charger connected to a working outlet with the adapter it requires?
  • For MagSafe, was the charger powered before the iPhone was placed on it?
  • Is the iPhone centered, face up and still?
  • Have you removed the case, wallet, cards, metal objects and debris?
  • Is the phone or charger hot, or is charging paused near 80 percent?
  • Does Settings > Battery show a charge limit, Optimized Battery Charging behavior or an incompatible-charger message?
  • Does a different adapter, cable or certified charger work?
  • Have you completed Apple’s 30-minute charge, force-restart and second 30-minute charge sequence?

If every answer points to a healthy setup but charging still fails, service is the sensible next step. Bring the charger, cable and adapter that failed, plus the results of your comparison tests, so support can reproduce the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my iPhone show a charging icon on a MagSafe charger?

Confirm that the charger is connected to a working outlet with the required adapter, power the MagSafe charger before placing the iPhone, remove the case and any objects, and center the phone. If you placed it first, remove it, wait three seconds and place it back. Then test another compatible adapter or charger.

Can an iPhone 8 or later use a MagSafe or Qi2 charger?

Apple says iPhone 8 and later support Qi-certified wireless chargers. A MagSafe Charger can charge Qi-compatible iPhones without magnetic attachment, while magnetic alignment and faster rates depend on the specific iPhone and charger. Check the model and charger compatibility lists.

Why does wireless charging stop at 80 percent?

Heat, a configured charge limit or Optimized Battery Charging can stop or limit charging near 80 percent. Check Settings > Battery and move the phone and charger to a cooler location. An 80-percent pause alone does not prove the charger is defective.

Do I need to remove my iPhone case?

Remove it for the first diagnostic test. Thick, metal or battery cases, magnetic accessories and wallet sections can block or misalign charging. If the phone charges without the case, use a thinner case explicitly designed for MagSafe or Qi2 and keep cards and badges away from the charger.

Is Qi2 always faster than regular Qi?

Apple recommends MagSafe or Qi2-certified wireless charging for faster wireless charging, but speed depends on the iPhone model, charger version, adapter and system conditions. A Qi2 label does not guarantee a specific rate, and Apple lists up to 25W peak MagSafe power only for specified combinations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I charge by cable and wirelessly at the same time?

No. If the iPhone is connected to USB power, it will not use wireless charging at the same time. Disconnect the cable before evaluating a MagSafe or Qi2 charger.

What should I do if both wired and wireless charging fail?

Try another known-good power source, restart the iPhone, inspect accessories, charge for 30 minutes, force-restart the appropriate iPhone generation, and charge for another 30 minutes. If it still will not charge or power on, Apple says service may be needed.

Should I buy a new charger immediately?

Only after testing identifies the charger, cable, adapter or compatibility as the problem. Compare certification, iPhone support, adapter requirements and expected rate for the exact combination. A new pad cannot repair a damaged iPhone or guarantee a particular speed.

The Bottom Line

Most MagSafe and Qi2 failures are traced to an unpowered or under-specced adapter, incorrect placement, case interference, heat or a charging setting. Power the charger first, remove the case and objects, center the iPhone, check Settings > Battery, and test a known-good combination. Complete Apple’s two 30-minute charging intervals with a force restart when necessary. If several compatible chargers fail—or the phone is damaged or unusually hot—stop testing and arrange Apple service.
