Remove a language you do not use, reorder keyboards you want to keep, or select the intended keyboard directly from the keyboard switcher. If you regularly type in two languages, the change may be Apple’s automatic multilingual behavior rather than a fault.
First identify what is changing
“The keyboard changed languages” can describe two different things. The language may change while the key arrangement stays familiar, or the entire layout may look different. This guide addresses language selection and Apple’s multilingual keyboard behavior. Start by checking the labels, suggestions, or language indicator rather than assuming that every visual change has the same cause.

- Language change: words, autocorrection, or the language indicator switch to another language while you are entering text.
- Keyboard selection change: the active keyboard becomes another installed language, often after using the globe, Emoji, or Switch Keyboard key.
- Layout change: key positions or symbols look different. A layout change is not necessarily a language switch, so first confirm which keyboard is active.
Once you know that the active language is changing, use the settings and keyboard-switching steps below. Do not change the entire iPhone language unless the problem is actually the language used by apps and websites.
Why an iPhone can switch languages automatically
Apple supports automatic language switching on some multilingual keyboards. When the relevant language combination is supported, you can type in two languages without manually changing keyboards. The keyboard learns the two languages you use most often and switches between them as you type. Apple also notes that this feature is not available for all languages.

Apple Support describes the feature this way: “If you add keyboards for other languages, you can type in two languages without having to switch between keyboards. Your keyboard automatically switches between the two languages you use most often. (Not available for all languages.)”
That means an unexpected switch is not automatically evidence of a damaged iPhone or a broken keyboard. It can be expected behavior when two supported languages are installed and used regularly. The practical question is whether you still need both languages and whether you want automatic switching.
Check which keyboards are installed
The installed-keyboard list is the most useful place to start because it shows which languages the keyboard can select. It is separate from the iPhone’s preferred language order.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Keyboard.
- Tap Keyboards.
- Review every keyboard listed there.
If a language appears in this list, it is available from the keyboard switcher while you type. Decide whether you want to remove it completely, keep it but make it less prominent, or combine it with another language through a supported multilingual option.
Remove a language keyboard you do not want
Removing an unused keyboard is the most direct fix when the iPhone keeps selecting a language you never intend to use. In Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards, use the screen’s remove control for the unwanted language, then finish the removal. Leave the keyboards you actually need.

This changes the keyboards available for text entry; it does not erase language support from the iPhone or change the display language of iOS. If you later need that language, you can add its keyboard again from the same Keyboards screen.
When removal is the right choice
- You never type in the language and do not need its special characters.
- You added the keyboard while experimenting and now select it accidentally.
- You want only one active keyboard so there is no second language for automatic switching to choose.
Keep the keyboard but reorder it
If you still write in the language but want to reduce accidental selection, keep it installed and reorder the entries in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Use the reorder control on that screen to place the keyboard you use most at the preferred position.

Reordering does not disable a keyboard and does not guarantee that automatic multilingual switching will stop. It simply changes the order in which the keyboards are presented and helps you reach the intended one more predictably. Choose this option when removing the secondary language would make legitimate typing harder.
Select the intended keyboard while typing
You do not have to leave the app or open Settings every time the language is wrong. While the keyboard is visible:
- Touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key.
- Wait for the list of installed keyboards to appear.
- Tap the language keyboard you want to use.
The selected keyboard becomes active for the current text-entry session. If the unwanted language continues to appear, return to the installed-keyboard list and decide whether it should be removed or retained as part of a supported multilingual setup.

Why holding the key matters
A quick tap can cycle through keyboards, making it easy to pass the intended language without noticing. Touching and holding the Emoji or Switch Keyboard key opens the list, so you can choose the exact entry instead of cycling blindly.
Choose between separate keyboards and one multilingual keyboard
People who type in more than one language have two documented approaches:
| Approach | Best for | What happens | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate language keyboards | People who want explicit control over each language | Each language remains a distinct entry in the Keyboards list and can be selected from the keyboard switcher. | You must choose the right entry when switching, and multiple entries make accidental selection easier. |
| Supported bilingual keyboard | People who regularly alternate between a supported pair | The keyboard can handle two languages without requiring a manual keyboard change. | Apple says automatic switching is not available for all languages or language pairs. |
If Apple offers an Add to [language] Keyboard option for your language pair, that is the relevant combined-keyboard path. The option may not appear for every combination. Do not assume that installing two separate keyboards automatically creates a bilingual keyboard; availability depends on Apple’s supported languages.
Use the iOS 18 three-language option only when it applies
Apple documents an iOS 18 option for using three languages in one keyboard. The documented scope is English plus up to two supported Indian languages. Apple also lists specific supported languages and compatible iPhone generations for this feature.
Because the feature has both language and device requirements, an iPhone running iOS 18 is not by itself enough to establish eligibility. Check whether your languages and iPhone model appear in Apple’s current requirements. If they do, the three-language keyboard can be preferable to maintaining several separate entries. If they do not, use separate keyboards or a supported bilingual option instead.

Do not confuse keyboard settings with Language & Region
The iPhone has a separate preferred-language list under Settings > General > Language & Region. This list affects how apps and websites display text. It is not the same control as choosing the active typing keyboard.
Apple notes that adding a keyboard for another language automatically adds that language to the preferred-language order. That connection can make the two settings appear to be the same, but they perform different jobs:
| Setting | Path | Controls |
|---|---|---|
| Installed keyboards | Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards | Which typing keyboards are available and which one you select while entering text. |
| Preferred language order | Settings > General > Language & Region | The language priority used for app and website text display, along with regional preferences. |
Change Language & Region when apps or websites are displaying the wrong language or when you need to adjust the preferred order. Do not use it as the routine fix for an unwanted keyboard switch. Remove or manage the keyboard in the Keyboards screen instead.

Determine whether the language changed, the active keyboard changed, or only the visual layout changed.
- Inspect the keyboard list. Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and identify every installed language.
- Remove an unneeded language. If you do not use it, remove it from the Keyboards screen.
- Reorder a needed language. If you still use it, keep it installed and move the keyboard you use most into the preferred position.
- Choose manually once. In any text field, touch and hold the Emoji or Switch Keyboard key and tap the desired keyboard.
- Evaluate multilingual behavior. If you regularly write in two languages, determine whether automatic switching is expected for your supported pair.
- Check combined-keyboard eligibility. If Apple presents an Add to [language] Keyboard option, consider it. For three languages, verify the iOS 18 language and device requirements.
- Use Language & Region only for display-language problems. Open Settings > General > Language & Region when the issue concerns apps or websites rather than typing.
Match the fix to the behavior
| What you observe | Most appropriate next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An unused language appears as an option | Remove it from Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. | Removing the entry prevents it from being selected from the keyboard switcher. |
| You need the language occasionally but select it by mistake | Keep it installed, reorder the list, and use the long-press keyboard picker. | You retain access while choosing the intended keyboard explicitly. |
| The keyboard changes between two languages you actively use | Check whether your pair supports automatic switching or a bilingual keyboard. | The change may be the documented multilingual feature rather than an error. |
| You use English and two supported Indian languages on iOS 18 | Check Apple’s documented three-language feature requirements for your languages and iPhone generation. | The option is limited to the listed languages and devices. |
| Apps and websites display the wrong language | Review Settings > General > Language & Region. | Preferred-language order is a display setting, not the active keyboard selector. |
| Only key positions or symbols look different | Verify the active keyboard name before changing language settings. | A layout difference is not necessarily the language-switching problem covered here. |
How to prevent repeated accidental switches
- Keep only the keyboards you genuinely use.
- Put your primary keyboard in the most convenient position in the Keyboards list.
- When several keyboards remain installed, use the long-press picker instead of rapidly tapping the switch key.
- If you type in two languages, decide whether automatic switching is useful or whether explicit, separate keyboards give you better control.
- Do not alter the iPhone’s entire preferred language order merely to correct one typing session.
These choices address the source of most confusion: the difference between available keyboards, the keyboard currently selected, and the language order used by apps and websites.

When the documented settings do not explain the change
If the active language still changes after you have reviewed the installed keyboards, manually selected the intended one, and confirmed that automatic switching is supported for your language pair, record exactly what changes. Note the app, the text field, the language shown by the keyboard picker, and whether the change affects typed text or only the layout. Those details distinguish a keyboard-selection issue from a separate layout or app-specific behavior.
The settings documented by Apple establish how to manage keyboards, choose one while typing, use supported multilingual options, and order preferred display languages. They do not establish that every possible layout change has the same cause. Avoid treating a visual layout difference as proof that the iPhone has switched languages.
Recommended setup for common situations
You write in one language only
Leave that language keyboard installed and remove other language keyboards. The keyboard switcher then has fewer entries, and there is no second installed language for supported automatic switching to use.
Recommended Free Tools
You write in two languages but want control
Keep both keyboards, reorder them so the primary one is easiest to reach, and select the desired entry by touching and holding the Emoji or Switch Keyboard key.
You write in two supported languages and prefer seamless typing
Check whether Apple offers a bilingual Add to [language] Keyboard option for the pair. If available, use the combined keyboard instead of relying on repeated manual changes.
You write in English and two supported Indian languages
On iOS 18, check Apple’s listed language and device requirements for the three-language keyboard. Use it only if your combination and iPhone generation are supported; otherwise manage separate keyboards.
Your complaint concerns app or website language
Open Settings > General > Language & Region and review the preferred-language order. That is the appropriate control for display language, not a substitute for managing the typing keyboards.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe short answer
An iPhone keyboard that keeps switching languages usually needs keyboard management, not hardware repair. Remove an unwanted keyboard, reorder one you still need, or select the correct keyboard from the long-press picker. If you use multiple languages, determine whether Apple’s supported automatic or combined-keyboard feature explains the behavior. Use Language & Region only when the problem is the language displayed by apps and websites.
