How to fix an iPad Air that won’t charge, connect to Wi‑Fi, or turn on

An iPad Air that will not charge, join Wi‑Fi, or show any sign of life can have a simple accessory, router, temperature, or software problem. Work through the reversible checks below before assuming the battery, charging port, Wi‑Fi radio, or logic board has failed. The correct button sequence depends on whether your iPad Air has a Home button, so identify the model and control layout first.

First, identify your iPad Air model

“iPad Air” covers several generations with different buttons, connectors, and accessory compatibility. Look for the model number on the back, or open Settings > General > About if the iPad will start. Use Apple’s model-lookup information to confirm the generation before buying a cable or following a button sequence. The procedures below are organized by Home-button versus no-Home-button hardware, not by the marketing name alone.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Home-button iPad Air: a physical or recessed Home button is below the display.
  • No-Home-button iPad Air: the display fills the front and the volume buttons sit near the top button.
  • Connector and accessory differences: generations do not all use the same charging connector or support the same keyboards and hubs. Choose a cable and adapter explicitly compatible with your model.

If the screen is completely black, you may not be able to check Settings. In that case, use the controls on the device and confirm the model from its rear markings or its original documentation before ordering accessories. If you are buying a replacement cable or adapter, match the connector and model first rather than assuming every iPad Air uses the same accessory.

If the iPad Air will not charge

Start by looking for evidence that power is reaching the tablet. A lightning bolt on the battery icon or a large battery icon on the Lock Screen indicates charging. No icon does not prove the battery or port is defective; a bad outlet, adapter, cable, extreme temperature, or frozen software can produce the same symptom.

1. Use a known-good power path

  1. Plug a USB charging cable, preferably the one supplied with the iPad, into a working USB power adapter and a known-good wall outlet.
  2. If you normally charge from another setup, test an awake computer with USB 2 or later, a powered hub or dock, an Apple-certified accessory, or a compatible Magic Keyboard connected to power. These alternatives can reveal whether the original adapter or outlet is the problem.
  3. Inspect both ends of the cable for looseness, fraying, bent contacts, or debris. Do not force a connector into the port. Try another known-working cable and adapter rather than repeatedly testing the same pair.
  4. Leave the iPad connected long enough to display a charging indicator. A deeply depleted battery may not show a normal screen immediately.

Apple’s “If your iPad won’t charge” guidance, published December 9, 2025, recommends trying a different cable or adapter when charging does not begin. It does not establish one universal adapter wattage for every iPad Air generation, so do not buy by wattage alone. The most useful comparison is a complete working path: a different outlet, adapter, and cable, not just one changed part while everything else stays the same.

2. Check temperature and physical conditions

An iPad that is too hot or too cold may pause charging. Move it to a dry, room-temperature location, remove a heat-trapping case temporarily, and let it return to normal temperature before testing again. Keep the tablet and connector dry. Do not scrape inside the port with metal tools or apply liquid.

After the iPad returns to a normal temperature, reconnect the known-good cable and watch for the lightning bolt or large battery symbol. If charging works only after the temperature changes, avoid direct sun, freezing conditions, and other environments that repeatedly trigger the pause.

3. Force-restart while it is connected

A frozen operating system can prevent the charging screen from appearing. Keep the iPad connected to power and use the sequence that matches its hardware:

  • Without a Home button: press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button; press and quickly release the other volume button; then hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
  • With a Home button: hold the Home button and the top (or side) button together until the Apple logo appears.

Release the buttons when the logo appears. If the iPad remains entirely unresponsive, leave it connected for up to an hour and try the sequence again. “Up to an hour” is Apple’s troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that every failed battery will recover.

4. Decide whether the accessory or iPad is at fault

Observation Most useful next check
The iPad charges with another cable or adapter Replace the failed cable or adapter; the tablet is receiving power through the working combination.
No charging icon with several known-good combinations Repeat the force restart, allow up to an hour on power, and then arrange service if nothing changes.
Charging stops only when the iPad is hot or cold Return it to room temperature and test again; avoid charging in direct sun or freezing conditions.
The iPad shows a logo but does not finish starting Follow the recovery-mode Update procedure in the power-on section.

These observations narrow the problem; they do not diagnose a failed battery or port remotely. If Apple’s basic charging steps do not restore a charging indicator or startup, use Apple Support’s service and repair options rather than opening the iPad or following unverified repair instructions.

If the iPad Air will not turn on or has a black screen

A black screen may mean a depleted battery, a frozen system, or a startup failure. A forced restart is safe to try before connecting the iPad to a computer. First confirm that the cable, adapter, and outlet have already been tested, because a completely empty battery can look identical to a dead display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Force-restart sequence

  1. No Home button: quickly press and release the volume button nearest the top button, quickly press and release the farther volume button, then hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. Home button: hold Home and the top or side button at the same time until the Apple logo appears.

Do not keep tapping the buttons; the first two presses on a no-Home-button model must be quick presses followed by one sustained hold. If there is still no logo, connect the iPad to power and allow up to an hour before trying again. Use a known-good cable, adapter, and outlet from the charging procedure.

If the Apple logo remains on screen

A logo that never progresses indicates a startup problem rather than a simple blank display. Apple’s “If your iPad doesn’t respond” instructions, published May 8, 2026, use recovery mode and recommend choosing Update when the computer offers a choice. Update attempts to reinstall the system without making Restore the first step.

  1. Connect the iPad to a computer with a working USB cable.
  2. On a Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, open Finder. On macOS Mojave or earlier, open iTunes. On a Windows PC, use Apple Devices or iTunes.
  3. With the iPad connected, enter recovery mode using the same hardware-specific controls: on a no-Home-button model, quickly press and release the volume button nearest the top, quickly press and release the other volume button, then hold the top button until the recovery screen appears; on a Home-button model, hold Home and the top or side button until the recovery screen appears.
  4. When the computer presents Update or Restore, select Update first. Keep the cable connected while the computer downloads and installs the software.
  5. If the download takes more than 15 minutes, Apple says the iPad may leave recovery mode. Let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode button sequence and choose Update again.

Do not choose Restore as the initial response when Update is offered, because Restore is a separate recovery action that can erase the device. If Update fails, the iPad repeatedly exits recovery mode, or the computer cannot detect it, stop repeated attempts and arrange service.

Recovery mode is for an iPad that reaches the Apple logo but cannot complete startup; it is not a substitute for checking power first. If the screen stays entirely black, return to the known-good charger and the up-to-an-hour charging interval before trying the computer procedure.

If the iPad Air will not connect to Wi‑Fi

Separate an iPad setting problem from a single-network problem and from an internet-service outage. Testing another device and another Wi‑Fi location is more informative than immediately resetting the iPad.

1. Check the iPad’s Wi‑Fi controls

  1. Open Settings > Wi‑Fi and make sure Wi‑Fi is on.
  2. Tap the intended network and enter its password. A blue checkmark beside the network name means the iPad is connected to it.
  3. Make sure Airplane Mode is off. If Wi‑Fi is dimmed or cannot be enabled, restart the iPad and check again.
  4. Move close to the router and retry. A weak signal can look like a failed connection.

If the network shows “No Internet Connection,” the iPad may be associated with the router while the router itself lacks internet access. Continue with the network tests instead of repeatedly re-entering the password. A blue checkmark confirms the Wi‑Fi association, not that the internet service beyond the router is working.

2. Test for VPN or security-software interference

Temporarily remove or disable VPN and security software, then restart the iPad and test Wi‑Fi. If the connection works only after that change, contact the software provider or your organization’s administrator before reinstalling it. Do not leave required security controls removed on a managed device without approval.

3. Determine whether one network or every network is affected

Test What the result suggests
Another phone, tablet, or computer cannot get online on the same Wi‑Fi The router, modem, or internet service is the leading area to investigate.
Other devices work, but the iPad does not on that network Check the iPad’s saved network, router compatibility, range, firmware, and frequency options.
The iPad connects elsewhere but not at home or work The original network or its configuration is more likely than an iPad-wide Wi‑Fi fault.
The iPad cannot connect to any available Wi‑Fi network After the software checks, contact Apple for device-specific support.

4. Restart and check the router

  • Confirm the router and modem have power and that the iPad is within range.
  • Restart the router and modem according to the provider’s normal procedure, then wait for service to return.
  • Install available router firmware updates.
  • If the router offers more than one supported frequency, try the other frequency.
  • Test the iPad at a different Wi‑Fi location. This can quickly distinguish a local router issue from a device-wide problem.

If every device is offline, contact the internet service provider. If other devices work normally but the iPad cannot join any network, contact Apple after completing the device steps. If only one location fails, keep working with that network’s administrator or provider instead of treating the iPad as defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Reset Network Settings only as a later step

Apple’s explicit guidance is: “Reset network settings only if other solutions fail.” On the iPad, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings, then authenticate if prompted.

This reset removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings. You will need to rejoin networks and re-enter credentials afterward. School and business users should consult their IT administrator first, because managed network or VPN settings may need to be restored by policy. Resetting network settings does not replace router troubleshooting, so perform the one-network and another-location tests first.

Choose the next step from the symptom pattern

Use the following decision axes instead of guessing at a component failure:

  • Supports Power Delivery: Get up to 60W high-speed charging for all of your USB-C devices when paired with a USB-C charger.
  • Universal Compatibility: Compatible with virtually all USB-C devices including phones, tablets, and laptops. (This cable does not support media display.)
  • Built to Last: A hard-wearing nylon exterior and a bulletproof fiber core combine to create a cable that can withstand up to 5,000 bends.
  • What You Get: 2 × New Nylon USB-C to USB-C Cable (6 ft), hook-and-loop cable tie, welcome guide, reliable product support, and responsive assistance.
  • Accessory versus device: a different known-good cable, adapter, and outlet are the quickest controlled comparison for charging.
  • One network versus the iPad: test another device on the same router and the iPad on another network before resetting settings.
  • Frozen software versus startup failure: a force restart addresses an unresponsive system; an Apple logo that never advances calls for recovery-mode Update.
  • DIY checks versus service: once charging, restart, recovery Update, and Wi‑Fi isolation steps fail, further home experimentation adds risk without establishing a diagnosis.

When to contact Apple service

Arrange Apple support or certified service when the iPad remains unresponsive after up to an hour on a known-good charger, will not show a charging indicator with multiple working accessories, cannot complete recovery-mode Update, or cannot connect to any Wi‑Fi network after the isolation and settings steps. Bring the iPad, its model information, and the cable and adapter combinations you tested. Do not open the enclosure, bend the port, or rely on unofficial procedures that could damage the device or affect service eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my iPad Air not charging?

Test the entire power path with a known-good outlet, USB power adapter, and compatible cable. Apple recommends trying a different cable or adapter. Look for the lightning bolt or large Lock Screen battery icon, let a deeply depleted iPad charge for up to an hour, and force-restart it while connected. If several working combinations produce no charging indication, arrange Apple service rather than assuming a failed battery or port.

How do I force-restart an iPad Air without a Home button?

Quickly press and release the volume button nearest the top button, then quickly press and release the other volume button. Immediately hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. The first two presses must be quick; do not hold both volume buttons. If there is no logo, connect a known-good charger and allow up to an hour before trying again.

How do I force-restart an iPad Air with a Home button?

Hold the Home button and the top or side button together until the Apple logo appears, then release. If the screen remains black, charge the iPad with a tested cable, adapter, and outlet for up to an hour and repeat the sequence. The Home-button procedure is different from the two-volume-button procedure used on newer hardware.

How long should I charge an iPad Air with a black screen?

Apple says an unresponsive iPad might need to remain connected to power for up to an hour. Use a known-good cable and adapter, then try the model-appropriate force restart. This duration is troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that a failed battery, port, or other hardware will recover.

What should I do if my iPad Air is stuck on the Apple logo?

Connect it to a computer and enter recovery mode using the button sequence for its hardware. Use Finder on macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier, or Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows. When offered Update or Restore, choose Update first. If the download exceeds 15 minutes and recovery mode exits, let it finish and repeat the recovery steps.

Why does my iPad Air say “No Internet Connection” even though Wi‑Fi is on?

The iPad may be connected to the router while the router or internet service is offline. Check whether other devices can get online, confirm router and modem power, restart them, check firmware, and try another supported frequency. Test the iPad at another Wi‑Fi location. If every device is offline, contact the internet service provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reset network settings on my iPad Air?

Use Reset Network Settings only after the other Wi‑Fi checks fail. The path is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings, so you must reconnect afterward. Consult school or business IT before resetting a managed device.

Can I charge an iPad Air from a computer or keyboard?

Apple lists an awake computer with USB 2 or later, a powered hub or dock, an Apple-certified accessory, and a compatible Magic Keyboard connected to power as possible charging sources. These are useful comparisons when a wall adapter or outlet may be the problem. Confirm compatibility for your iPad Air generation and use a cable that fits that model.

How can I tell whether the Wi‑Fi problem is my iPad or the network?

Check another phone, tablet, or computer on the same network, then try the iPad on a different Wi‑Fi network or location. If other devices fail too, investigate the router, modem, or internet provider. If the iPad works elsewhere, the original network is more likely at fault. If it cannot join any network after software checks, contact Apple.

Should I choose Restore when recovery mode offers Update or Restore?

Choose Update first, as Apple’s procedure specifies. Restore is a separate recovery action and can erase the device, so it should not be the first response when Update is available. If Update repeatedly fails, the iPad leaves recovery mode, or the computer cannot detect it, stop repeated attempts and arrange service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When does an iPad Air need Apple service?

Contact Apple or certified service when it remains unresponsive after up to an hour on a known-good charger, shows no charging indicator with multiple working accessories, cannot complete recovery-mode Update, or cannot connect to any Wi‑Fi network after isolation and settings checks. Do not open the enclosure or use unverified repair procedures.

The Bottom Line

Identify the iPad Air’s button layout and generation first. Test charging with a known-good cable, adapter, outlet, and normal temperature; force-restart while connected and allow up to an hour if the screen is black. For a logo that will not advance, use recovery mode and choose Update. For Wi‑Fi, compare another device and another network before resetting settings. If these Apple-based steps fail, use Apple Support or certified service instead of opening the iPad.
