Start with the state of your export
The correct fix depends on whether Instagram is still building the archive, has issued an expired download, or has produced a file that appears incomplete. Use this quick diagnosis before submitting another request:

Where “Download Your Information” is now
Instagram moved the control into Meta’s Accounts Center. Meta announced on October 17, 2023 that “Download Your Information and Access Your Information are now in Accounts Center,” and that information from Facebook and Instagram can be downloaded at the same time. The exact wording and menu placement can vary by app version and rollout.

- Open the profile menu, then enter Settings if that is how your app presents the control.
- Open Accounts Center.
- Choose Your information and permissions.
- Open Export your information or Download your information. Meta may show either label.
- Select the Instagram profile that should be included. If Accounts Center manages more than one profile, check this choice carefully.
- Choose the information categories, date range, file format, and media quality.
- Start the export request.
You may be able to include Facebook and Instagram in one request. For an Instagram-only archive, select only the intended Instagram profile and confirm the account name before continuing.

When an Instagram export is delayed
What “preparing” means
A preparing status means Instagram is processing the request; it is not proof that the request failed. Meta’s current help guidance says, “It may take up to 30 days for us to email you an export link.” That is an upper-limit guidance statement, not an average completion time or a promise that every request will take 30 days.
An all-time request containing high-quality media is larger than a narrow, text-focused request and can take longer in practice. Meta does not publish an official average completion time, so do not treat an internet estimate as a guaranteed deadline.
Check every delivery location
- Check the email address displayed when you created the request. A typo or an old address can make a completed export appear to be missing.
- Search the inbox and spam, junk, promotions, and social folders for Instagram or Meta messages.
- Open Instagram notifications; the app may alert you even when an email is delayed or filtered.
- In Accounts Center, return to Your information and permissions and open Available downloads. A ready archive can appear there without requiring you to find the original email.
Should you submit another request?
Do not immediately create repeated requests while the first one is still preparing. First check the locations above and confirm the original account and settings. Multiple large requests can make it harder to identify which archive is current and can increase the amount of storage you need. If the request remains unavailable after Meta’s stated 30-day window, record the account, request date, selected date range, categories, and format, then use Instagram’s Help Center contact route.
How to replace an expired download link
Understand the four-day limit
Meta’s guidance says that after an export is ready, “you’ll have 4 days to export your information.” The archive contains personal information, so the link is deliberately time-limited. It may require you to be logged in to the same Instagram account that created the request and to confirm your password.

Request a fresh archive
- Sign in to the same Instagram account used for the original request.
- Open Accounts Center from Instagram’s profile menu or Settings.
- Go to Your information and permissions, then Export your information or Download your information.
- Select the correct Instagram profile and repeat the required categories, date range, format, and media-quality choices.
- Submit the new request.
- When it becomes available, download it promptly from the email or Available downloads area.
An expired link cannot be revived by refreshing the page, clearing the browser cache, or reopening the original email. Keep the replacement email and link private; do not forward them or paste them into a public support forum.
Why an export looks incomplete
1. The wrong Instagram profile was selected
Accounts Center can manage more than one account. An export made for a different profile can be perfectly valid while appearing to omit your messages, followers, posts, or activity. Open the export details and compare the selected profile with the username you are investigating. If it is wrong, create a new request for the correct profile.
2. The date range excluded the material
A custom date range limits what Instagram includes. Older direct messages, posts, comments, searches, or account activity will not appear if they fall outside that range. For a completeness check, request the full available period rather than assuming a recent range represents the entire account.
3. Categories were intentionally left out
The export form lets you select information categories. A customized request can therefore omit entire classes of data by design. Reopen the request settings and compare them with what you are looking for. If you need a broad audit, include all available categories instead of only the categories that seem relevant at first.

4. You inspected only part of a multi-part archive
Large exports can be split into multiple ZIP files. Download every part shown in Available downloads and place them in one working folder before extracting or searching. Looking at only the first part can make messages, media, or account records appear to be absent. Preserve the folder structure created by extraction; moving individual files out before the extraction is complete can break relative paths and make searches misleading.
5. The download itself is partial
High-quality media produces a larger archive and requires more device storage. If the connection stopped early or the device ran out of space, the ZIP may have a plausible name but fail during extraction or contain only part of the expected folders. Check the downloaded file size against the size shown by Instagram, confirm free storage, delete the damaged copy, and download that part again.
6. The format changes how you inspect the data
HTML is designed for people to browse as readable pages. JSON is designed for software, scripts, and structured inspection. A JSON export can look sparse if you open it in a basic text editor and search for the labels you would expect in HTML. Conversely, an HTML export may be harder to process in bulk. Choose the format based on the task, then inspect the corresponding folder structure rather than judging completeness from one file.
HTML versus JSON: choose the format that matches your goal

Neither format guarantees that deleted or unavailable information will be restored. Format choice affects presentation and analysis, not whether Instagram can provide records that no longer exist on its systems.

A reliable completeness check
Use this order so that you do not request another archive unnecessarily:
- Verify identity: confirm the Instagram username and profile selected in Accounts Center.
- Verify scope: write down the date range and the categories selected for the request.
- Verify delivery: confirm that every available ZIP part has finished downloading and that none has a browser error or suspiciously small size.
- Verify extraction: extract all parts into one folder and retain the original directory structure.
- Search broadly: inspect every folder, not just the first HTML page or JSON file. Look for separate records for messages, followers, media, comments, searches, and account activity.
- Check media settings: compare the selected media quality with what you expected. Higher quality increases archive size and storage needs.
- Repeat with an all-time scope: if the missing item should exist but the original request was narrow, submit a fresh all-time request with the required categories.
- Document a persistent gap: note the exact missing path or record, account, export date, format, date range, and categories before contacting Instagram.
Login, password, and security checks
Use the same Instagram account that created the export request. If Instagram asks you to sign in or re-enter your password, complete that step in the official app or the official Instagram login flow. A link opened while signed out, or while signed in to another account, can fail even when the archive itself is valid.
- Do not forward the export email.
- Do not share the download URL in a chat, support post, or screenshot.
- Download over a connection you trust and store the archive in a protected location.
- Delete temporary copies from shared computers and browser download folders when you no longer need them.
The archive can contain private messages, contact details, account history, and media. Treat it like a password reset email or financial document rather than an ordinary attachment.
What to do when a fresh all-time export is still missing data
If the correct account, full date range, required categories, all ZIP parts, and extraction process have been checked, request one fresh all-time export in the format most suitable for your review. If the same category or path is absent again, record:
- the Instagram username and the Accounts Center profile selected;
- the date and time of the export request;
- the export format (HTML or JSON);
- the selected date range and categories;
- the exact folder, file, conversation, or record you expected; and
- any download or extraction error.
Use Instagram’s Help Center or contact route with that information. Support may be unable to provide deleted or otherwise unavailable information, and the contact route does not guarantee access or a particular turnaround time. Avoid claiming that a category was “lost” until you have ruled out a limited request and a missing archive part.
Choosing a request scope: speed versus completeness

There is no official completion-time estimate beyond Meta’s statement that emailing the export link may take up to 30 days. Choose a narrow request when you need a specific slice of data and an all-time, high-quality request when completeness matters more than archive size.
Practical handling after the download succeeds
- Download every part before the four-day window closes.
- Keep the original ZIP files unchanged as a backup of what Instagram delivered.
- Extract a working copy into a dedicated folder with enough free space for both the ZIP files and extracted contents.
- For HTML, open the index or category pages in a browser and follow links rather than opening random files.
- For JSON, use a viewer or code editor that can search nested data and preserve UTF-8 characters.
- Back up the completed archive to a private, access-controlled location if you need long-term retention.
- Remove unneeded temporary copies from shared devices.
Downloading promptly matters because the four-day availability period applies after the export is ready, not after you first notice the email.

A delayed Instagram export is usually still processing: monitor Accounts Center and your delivery channels for up to Meta’s stated 30-day window. An expired export requires a new request, because the four-day link cannot be extended. An incomplete archive is most often explained by the wrong profile, a limited date range or category selection, a missing ZIP part, an interrupted download, or a format that was inspected incorrectly. After those checks, document the exact gap and contact Instagram’s Help Center, recognizing that deleted or unavailable information may not be recoverable.
