How to Fix an Insta360 Phone Gimbal That Won’t Connect or Track Faces

Most Insta360 Flow connection problems and face-tracking problems have different causes. First establish whether the gimbal is missing during Bluetooth pairing or is connected but unable to track in the camera app you chose. Then work through the model, phone, app, one-phone connection limit, permissions and tracking-mode checks below.

The instructions apply to Flow, Flow Pro, Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro. A Bluetooth connection by itself does not activate every tracking feature: Deep Track is an Insta360-app feature, while Android third-party tracking and iPhone DockKit tracking follow separate compatibility rules.

Identify the failure before changing settings

Use the symptom that matches what you see. This prevents trying tracking fixes when the gimbal has not paired, or resetting Bluetooth when the selected camera app simply does not support tracking.

What you see Most likely area First action
The gimbal never appears in the Insta360 app Bluetooth state, another connected phone, permissions or model compatibility Confirm Bluetooth is on, disconnect the old phone and perform the three-second Bluetooth reset
The app connects, but the phone camera does not follow a face Wrong app or tracking mode Check whether you are using Insta360 Deep Track, Android Live Mode/AI Tracker or iOS DockKit
iPhone native Camera shows no tracking DockKit hardware, iOS version, mode or pairing name Verify Flow Pro or Flow 2 Pro, Video mode, iPhone 12 or newer, iOS 17 or newer and the “Dock” Bluetooth connection
The phone is loose or the motor struggles Phone dimensions or weight outside Insta360’s recommendation Check thickness, width and weight before troubleshooting software

A useful test is to change only one variable at a time. For example, first try the Insta360 app with the same phone, then try the external camera app. If tracking works in the Insta360 app but not elsewhere, the gimbal is communicating and the remaining issue is app or protocol support rather than basic Bluetooth pairing.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Confirm the gimbal model and phone requirements

These steps cover Insta360 Flow, Flow Pro, Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro. Insta360 lists the following baseline requirements for Flow-series pairing:

  • Bluetooth 5.0 or later on the phone.
  • Android 7.0 or later, or iOS 11 or later.
  • For iPhone, an iPhone 8 or later for the general Flow-series pairing requirement.

Those are pairing requirements, not a guarantee that every control or tracking function will appear. Insta360 maintains model-specific compatibility lists; consult the current list when pairing succeeds but a control, shooting mode or tracking option is absent. App support, firmware and operating-system behavior can change independently of the basic Bluetooth connection.

Do not use the general iPhone 8 requirement to assume that every newer feature works on every supported iPhone. Native Camera DockKit tracking has a stricter iPhone 12-and-newer requirement, and third-party apps can impose their own DockKit limits. Likewise, an Android phone that meets the operating-system minimum may not support every Live Mode combination.

Check the phone’s physical fit

Insta360 recommends a phone thickness of 6.9–10 mm, width of 64–84 mm and weight of 130–300 g. A phone outside those ranges may not be held securely or balanced correctly, even if Bluetooth pairing succeeds.

Phone characteristic Insta360 recommended range
Thickness 6.9–10 mm
Width 64–84 mm
Weight 130–300 g

Remove a particularly thick case while testing. If the bare phone is within the ranges but the cased phone is not, the case can be the reason the clamp slips or the motor cannot stabilize the phone. A physical-fit problem can look like a software fault: the phone may tilt, the horizon may drift or the motors may work harder even though pairing and tracking commands are functioning.

Pair the gimbal through the Insta360 app

For the first connection, use Insta360’s app rather than attempting to make system Bluetooth pairing the entire setup. The app performs the product discovery and activation flow required by the gimbal. A phone may show a Bluetooth entry while the app still lacks the connection it needs for camera controls.

  1. Charge the gimbal sufficiently, unfold or position it according to its model instructions, and turn it on.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth on the phone. Keep the phone close to the gimbal during discovery.
  3. Open the Insta360 app and tap the camera icon.
  4. Select the discovered Flow-series gimbal and follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. Allow the requested Bluetooth, local-network and mobile-data permissions. Denying one of these can prevent discovery or limit controls.
  6. If this is the first activation, provide internet access when the app requests it. If a firmware update starts, leave the gimbal powered on, keep the app open and do not switch off the gimbal or exit the app.

After pairing, test the controls in the Insta360 app before moving to another camera app. This separates a successful gimbal connection from an app that does not support the feature you want. If the phone asks whether to pair in system settings during setup, follow the app’s prompt and return to the app rather than treating the system Bluetooth screen as the complete activation process.

Reset Bluetooth when the gimbal is not detected

A Bluetooth reset clears the gimbal’s current wireless pairing state. It is the documented reset for a Flow-series gimbal that does not appear in the Insta360 app.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Update the Insta360 app to its current version.
  2. On the powered-on gimbal, press and hold the Trigger and Shutter buttons together for three seconds.
  3. Listen for three beeps. The three-beep confirmation indicates that the Bluetooth reset completed.
  4. On the phone, open Bluetooth settings and forget or unpair the Flow-series device if it is listed.
  5. Toggle the phone’s Bluetooth off, wait briefly, then turn it back on.
  6. Return to the Insta360 app, tap the camera icon and search for the gimbal again.

Hold both buttons at the same time for the full three seconds; tapping them sequentially does not perform the documented action. If the reset produces no three-beep confirmation, repeat it carefully. Keep the phone close, and temporarily turn off Bluetooth on other nearby phones that have previously used the gimbal so they cannot reconnect during the search.

Do not substitute a factory reset or firmware downgrade; those are not documented as general solutions for this symptom. A reset of the wireless state is different from erasing all device settings, and an unsupported firmware change can create additional recovery work.

Release the connection from another phone

Flow-series gimbals connect to one phone at a time. Insta360’s manual states that “The gimbal can only be connected to one phone at a time.” When an old phone is still connected, the gimbal may not appear as available to a second phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On the old phone, close the Insta360 app and disconnect or forget the gimbal in Bluetooth settings. If that phone is unavailable, perform the Trigger-plus-Shutter Bluetooth reset, then search again from the new phone. Keep only the phone you intend to use near the gimbal while pairing so it does not immediately reconnect to the previous device. If several household phones have used the gimbal, check each one rather than assuming the last phone you used is the only possible connection.

Check permissions, activation and firmware

Bluetooth discovery can fail even when the radio is switched on if the operating system has blocked the app’s permissions. In the phone’s app-permission settings, allow Insta360 access to:

  • Bluetooth or nearby devices.
  • Local network, where the operating system presents that permission.
  • Mobile data, if the app needs it for activation, discovery or account services.

Permission names differ by Android and iOS release. On Android, a nearby-devices or Bluetooth permission may be separate from location-related permissions; on iOS, local-network access appears as its own switch. If a permission was previously denied, open the app’s settings page, enable it, force-close the Insta360 app and try discovery again. Reopening the app matters because some permission changes are not picked up by an already-running session.

The first activation may require an internet connection. During a firmware update, keep the gimbal powered and do not leave the app. Interrupting an update can create a separate recovery problem and does not help a failed pairing attempt. Let the update finish before testing a different phone or camera app, and avoid switching between Wi-Fi networks or disabling mobile data while activation is in progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When pairing works but face tracking does not

Face tracking is controlled by the camera app and tracking protocol, not by Bluetooth alone. Identify the app you are using before changing hardware. The same physical gimbal can offer different tracking behavior in the Insta360 app, an Android camera app and an iOS camera app.

Tracking route Where it works Important conditions
Deep Track Insta360 app App-exclusive; a system Bluetooth connection alone does not provide it
Live Mode Supported third-party Android camera apps Use the mode and app combinations listed by Insta360 for your model
AI Tracker Third-party Android apps on Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro Separate accessory; compatibility option, not a pairing repair
DockKit Compatible iOS apps with Flow Pro or Flow 2 Pro Hardware, iOS version, app support and pairing mode all matter

These routes are not interchangeable. A Flow 2 user cannot assume that an iPhone DockKit instruction applies to an Android phone, and a Flow owner cannot assume that buying an AI Tracker adds support to an incompatible model. First identify the exact Flow model, phone operating system and camera app, then check the matching route.

Use Deep Track in the Insta360 app

Deep Track is the app-exclusive Insta360 tracking route. If the gimbal pairs but the phone is not following a face, open the Insta360 app and start tracking from the app’s tracking control rather than from the phone’s generic Bluetooth page. The exact control presentation can vary by model, app version and shooting mode.

If Deep Track is missing, first verify that the phone and Flow model appear on Insta360’s current compatibility list. A successful Bluetooth connection proves only that the phone can communicate with the gimbal; it does not prove that the selected phone, operating system or app version supports every Deep Track function. Update the app before repeating the test, and make sure the app—not a separate camera application—is displaying the live preview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand Android third-party tracking

The Flow series does not directly provide its app-based tracking in every third-party Android camera app. Pairing the gimbal through Android Bluetooth therefore cannot turn on Deep Track in an unrelated camera application.

Live Mode

Insta360 lists Live Mode as a route for supported third-party Android use. The specific app must appear in Insta360’s compatibility information, and the available controls depend on the exact Flow model and phone. If Live Mode is not offered for your combination, changing Bluetooth settings will not add it. Check the app name, Android version and Flow model together; support for one Android camera app does not imply support for another.

AI Tracker for Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro

Insta360 lists its separately purchased AI Tracker as an option for smart tracking in third-party Android apps on Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro. It is an add-on, so budget for the accessory separately and verify the current retailer listing and compatibility before buying; no single price should be assumed across regions or dates. Treat it as a compatibility choice when you need tracking outside the Insta360 app, not as a fix for a gimbal that cannot pair. Confirm the current accessory and app compatibility because support can change with firmware and operating-system updates.

Set up iPhone DockKit tracking

DockKit is a different tracking path from Deep Track. Insta360 lists DockKit support for Flow Pro and Flow 2 Pro in compatible iOS apps. The gimbal model, iOS release, camera mode and Bluetooth name all matter, so a normal Flow Bluetooth connection is not enough to establish DockKit.

iPhone native Camera requirements

For tracking with the iPhone’s native Camera app, Insta360’s guidance requires all of the following:

  • Flow Pro or Flow 2 Pro hardware.
  • Video mode in the Camera app.
  • iPhone 12 or newer.
  • iOS 17 or later, with iOS 18 or later recommended.
  • Pairing to the Bluetooth device name “Dock”.
  • Tracking enabled and active in the supported mode.

Insta360 states that iPhone SE does not support this native-camera tracking feature. An older iPhone may still meet the general Flow Bluetooth requirement yet fail this particular DockKit use case. If the native Camera app is open in Photo mode, or the phone is connected to a generic Flow name instead of “Dock,” correcting those details is more useful than repeating a standard Bluetooth reset.

Other iOS camera apps

A third-party iOS camera app must itself support DockKit. If it does not, the Flow Pro or Flow 2 Pro cannot add DockKit tracking to it merely by pairing. Check the app’s DockKit support and Insta360’s current compatibility information before troubleshooting the gimbal. Test the native Camera app under the requirements above when possible; that comparison shows whether the problem is specific to the third-party app.

Common mistakes that look like hardware failure

  • Using system Bluetooth only: this can create a basic wireless link but does not supply Insta360-app Deep Track.
  • Leaving a previous phone connected: the one-phone limit can make a working gimbal appear undiscoverable.
  • Skipping permissions: Bluetooth being enabled globally does not grant the Insta360 app nearby-device or local-network access.
  • Testing the wrong mode: iPhone native tracking requires Video mode, while Android and iOS third-party routes have their own app requirements.
  • Assuming model names are interchangeable: DockKit is listed for Flow Pro and Flow 2 Pro, and the AI Tracker option is listed for Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro.
  • Ignoring the clamp: a thick case or an out-of-range phone can cause unstable movement even after successful pairing.

Use the correct decision path

Work through this order so each test answers a specific question:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Is the gimbal visible in the Insta360 app? If no, confirm the model and phone requirements, disconnect any old phone, grant permissions and perform the three-second Bluetooth reset.
  2. Does the app connect after the reset? If no, repeat discovery with only the intended phone nearby. If the documented reset and compatibility checks fail, move to Insta360 support rather than attempting an undocumented factory procedure.
  3. Does tracking work in the Insta360 app? If yes, the gimbal and phone can track in that supported route; a failure in another app is an app or protocol compatibility issue.
  4. Which external route matches the phone? Choose Android Live Mode or the Flow 2/Flow 2 Pro AI Tracker option for supported Android apps, or DockKit for Flow Pro/Flow 2 Pro with supported iOS apps.
  5. Is the phone physically within the recommended range? Check the 6.9–10 mm thickness, 64–84 mm width and 130–300 g weight limits if the clamp slips, the horizon tilts or motors behave erratically.

Record the result of each test. “Not detected in Insta360,” “detected but no Deep Track,” and “works in Insta360 but not in the native Camera app” describe three different support cases and prevent repeating the same step without new information.

When to contact Insta360 support

Escalate when the gimbal still cannot be discovered after the documented Bluetooth reset, old-phone disconnect, permission checks and model compatibility review. Include the exact Flow model, phone model, operating-system version, Insta360 app version, whether the gimbal emits the three reset beeps and which step fails. Also state whether the phone is inside the recommended size and weight ranges and whether another camera app was tested. This information helps support distinguish a wireless-state problem from an unsupported app or phone combination.

Do not assume that a factory reset, firmware downgrade or repair will solve a pairing or tracking symptom unless Insta360 gives a model-specific instruction. The official troubleshooting flow points to support when the documented checks do not resolve the connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset Bluetooth on an Insta360 Flow?

Turn on the gimbal, hold the Trigger and Shutter buttons together for three seconds, and listen for three beeps. Then forget the gimbal on the phone, toggle Bluetooth off and on, and reconnect through the Insta360 app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my Flow invisible to my new phone?

A Flow-series gimbal can connect to only one phone at a time. Disconnect or forget it on the old phone, or perform the three-second Trigger-plus-Shutter Bluetooth reset before searching from the new phone.

Can system Bluetooth alone enable Deep Track?

No. Deep Track is an Insta360-app feature. Pair through the Insta360 app and verify that your exact phone and Flow model support the desired tracking function.

Can I use face tracking in any Android camera app?

No. Insta360 lists Live Mode only for supported third-party Android combinations. Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro users can also consider the separately purchased AI Tracker for supported third-party Android apps; it is not a pairing repair.

What does an iPhone need for native Camera tracking?

Use Flow Pro or Flow 2 Pro, an iPhone 12 or newer, iOS 17 or later (iOS 18 or later recommended), the Camera app’s Video mode, the “Dock” Bluetooth connection and active tracking. Insta360 says iPhone SE does not support this feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my gimbal pair but not track in an iPhone camera app?

The app must support DockKit, and the hardware must be Flow Pro or Flow 2 Pro. A normal Bluetooth connection cannot add DockKit support to an incompatible app.

What phone size can the Flow clamp hold?

Insta360 recommends 6.9–10 mm thickness, 64–84 mm width and 130–300 g weight. A case can push an otherwise suitable phone outside those ranges.

Should I factory-reset or downgrade firmware when pairing fails?

Not as a general step. Use the documented Bluetooth reset, permissions and compatibility checks first; contact Insta360 support if those steps fail unless support provides model-specific instructions.

The Bottom Line

Separate pairing from tracking. Pair through the Insta360 app, reset Bluetooth by holding Trigger and Shutter for three seconds until three beeps, and release any connection held by another phone. Once connected, choose the route that matches your setup: Deep Track in the Insta360 app, Live Mode or an AI Tracker for supported Android combinations, or DockKit on Flow Pro/Flow 2 Pro with compatible iOS apps. Check the phone’s OS, model, permissions and physical fit before treating the gimbal as defective.
