An HTTP 502 Bad Gateway error means a server acting as a gateway or proxy received an invalid response from the server behind it. The fault is usually between the website’s proxy, CDN, tunnel or load balancer and its origin application—not a broken web page in your browser. If you are only visiting the site, retry once, test without a VPN or unusual proxy, and report a persistent error with the URL and time. If you operate the site, identify which layer generated the response, test the origin directly, then inspect service health, network reachability, TLS, DNS, timeouts and response formatting.

What a 502 error means

HTTP status code 502 is defined by Mozilla’s MDN as a server error returned when a server acting as a gateway or proxy receives an invalid response from an upstream server. A typical request travels through several layers:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Your browser or app sends a request.
  • A reverse proxy, CDN, tunnel or load balancer accepts it.
  • That intermediary contacts an upstream origin, such as a web server or application process.
  • The intermediary tries to pass the origin’s response back to you.

If the upstream connection is refused, closes prematurely, returns malformed headers, violates protocol expectations or otherwise produces an unusable response, the intermediary may generate 502. A valid error response from the origin should normally be passed through instead of being converted to 502.

A 502 is not the same as a 504 Gateway Timeout. A 504 means the proxy did not receive a response from the origin within its timeout period; a 502 means the response it received was invalid or unusable. The distinction helps you choose between checking response validity and investigating a slow or unreachable service.

First identify who generated the error

Do not change settings until you know which layer displayed the page. Look at the page design, text, response headers and any request identifier. A Cloudflare-branded page, a CloudFront error page, an Nginx page, a hosting-company page or a site’s own template points to different logs and fixes. Headers can reveal a CDN or reverse proxy through fields such as a server name, cache status, Ray ID or request ID. Save that information before refreshing.

Clue Likely layer Evidence to collect
Cloudflare branding or Ray ID Cloudflare edge or the origin behind it Ray ID, UTC time, URL, response headers and whether the page says 502 or 504
CloudFront branding or an AWS request ID Amazon CloudFront or its custom origin Request ID, distribution hostname, origin hostname and headers
Plain Nginx, Apache or load-balancer page Your own reverse proxy or load balancer Proxy error log, upstream address and application log entries
Unbranded page from a hosting provider Hosting network or an upstream service Exact page, host, time and any provider reference number
Only one device or network sees it Possibly local DNS, VPN, proxy or filtering Results from another network and from a clean browser session

Record the exact URL, UTC time and your local time zone, status code, response headers, visible request or trace ID and the network you used. Those details let a hosting provider correlate your report with edge and origin logs.

If you are a visitor

Retry once, not repeatedly

A transient origin crash, overloaded worker or traffic shift can clear on its own. Wait briefly and reload once. Repeated rapid refreshes can increase load on an already unhealthy service and make diagnosis harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rule out a local proxy or VPN

  1. Open the same URL in a private window to remove stale cookies and cached authentication state.
  2. Temporarily disable a VPN, corporate proxy or traffic-filtering extension, if your organization permits it.
  3. Try a different connection, such as mobile data, and compare the result.
  4. Check whether unrelated websites work. If every site fails, investigate your local connection rather than this particular 502.

A local networking configuration can matter when the service works for other visitors. Do not assume that changing DNS will repair a server-side 502, but comparing networks can show whether the failing intermediary is specific to one route.

Report a persistent error

Contact the site owner or hosting provider when the error continues. Include the URL, the UTC time and time zone, the exact status code, a screenshot or copied message, the request or Ray ID and whether another network reproduced it. Visitors generally cannot repair an origin crash, firewall rule or malformed response themselves.

Manual diagnosis for site owners

1. Test the origin directly

From the proxy host or another machine with an equivalent route, request the backend without going through the public CDN or proxy:

curl -v http://localhost:8080

Replace the address and port with the service configured as the upstream. A successful direct response but a public 502 points toward proxy, CDN, TLS, DNS or routing configuration. A failed direct request points toward the application, listening socket, local firewall or host itself. If the origin requires a specific host name, test that name while connecting to the intended address so virtual-host and certificate behavior is represented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Confirm that the service is running and listening

Check the application process, its supervisor or container, and the socket it should expose. Verify that the configured address and port match exactly: a service bound only to a loopback address cannot be reached from a separate proxy host, while a proxy pointed at the wrong port will receive a connection failure. Review application and service-manager logs around the recorded incident time for crashes, restarts, out-of-memory events and refused connections.

3. Read every layer’s logs

  • Reverse-proxy or load-balancer log: Find the upstream address, connection result, response status, timing and any “invalid header,” “upstream prematurely closed connection” or protocol error detail.
  • CDN or tunnel log: Match the request ID or Ray ID and determine whether the edge generated 502 or merely passed an origin failure through.
  • Application log: Look for crashes, worker exhaustion, uncaught exceptions and responses cut off before completion.
  • Firewall and security log: Check whether the proxy, tunnel connector or health-check source was blocked.

Correlate timestamps in UTC where possible. A log line from the wrong minute can lead you to “fix” an unrelated request.

4. Check network boundaries

Verify DNS resolution for the upstream host, routing between proxy and origin, security-group rules, host firewalls and container or virtual-network policies. Confirm that the origin accepts connections from the proxy’s actual source addresses. A change that allows browser traffic but blocks the proxy will still produce 502 at the edge.

5. Check TLS and protocol compatibility

For HTTPS upstreams, verify that the proxy connects using a protocol the origin supports, that the certificate name matches the hostname the proxy sends, and that the certificate chain is trusted by the proxy. Check for accidental HTTP-to-HTTPS or HTTPS-to-HTTP mismatches. On a CDN with a custom origin, confirm the configured origin hostname rather than assuming the public site name is used for the backend handshake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Validate the response itself

Use verbose curl output and proxy logs to inspect status line, headers and connection behavior. Look for:

  • A connection that closes before the complete status line or headers arrive.
  • Malformed or duplicate headers that the intermediary rejects.
  • A Content-Length value that does not match the bytes sent.
  • Broken gzip or other compression that produces an invalid stream.
  • An unexpectedly large response that exceeds an intermediary’s limits.

Cloudflare specifically lists broken gzip and a mismatched content-length as possible causes of edge-side 502 responses. Disable or correct the faulty compression or length calculation, then retest with the same request.

7. Check timeouts without masking the cause

If the origin is simply too slow, a 504 is more typical, but an intermediary can still fail when a connection is interrupted during a long response. Measure time to first byte and total response time at the origin. Do not increase every timeout blindly: first determine whether workers are blocked, a database call is stalled or the response is being terminated. Change one relevant timeout at a time and retain the previous value for rollback.

8. Validate and roll back one controlled change

Validate proxy, tunnel or CDN configuration before reloading it. Apply one change, repeat the direct-origin curl test, then make the end-to-end request through the public hostname. Keep a written record of the old and new values. If the 502 rate increases, restore the known-good configuration rather than stacking additional edits.

Cloudflare-specific 502 cases

Cloudflare documents that a 502 or 504 can originate at the customer’s origin or at Cloudflare. Origin-side causes include excessive load, crashes, network failures and applications or services that timed out or were blocked. Cloudflare-side cases can include compression problems and transient traffic shifts between data centers.

When the page is Cloudflare-branded

  1. Save the Ray ID, exact URL, UTC time and response headers.
  2. Test the origin directly from the proxy or host, bypassing Cloudflare.
  3. Compare the direct response with the edge response, including headers, compression and content length.
  4. Inspect origin health, firewall events and Cloudflare logs for the same Ray ID or time window.

If the page is unbranded and does not mention Cloudflare, Cloudflare advises contacting the hosting provider instead; another intermediary may have generated the response.

Cloudflare Tunnel 502

A Tunnel 502 has a narrower meaning: the tunnel is connected to Cloudflare, but cloudflared cannot reach the local service named by the tunnel’s ingress rule. Check error-level tunnel logs, confirm the local application is running and listening on the expected port, and test that service directly:

curl -v http://localhost:8080

Then verify the ingress rule’s scheme, hostname and port. A typo in the service address, a process bound to a different interface, a local firewall block or an HTTP/HTTPS mismatch can all prevent cloudflared from reaching the origin. Retest locally before testing through the public hostname.

Amazon CloudFront 502 cases

AWS documents CloudFront 502 scenarios involving custom-origin TLS and certificate mismatches, DNS resolution problems and invalid origin responses. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm that the origin hostname resolves from the expected public DNS and points to the intended server.
  2. Check that the certificate presented by the origin matches the hostname CloudFront uses and that its trust chain is valid.
  3. Verify that the origin supports the TLS versions and protocols configured for the distribution.
  4. Request the origin directly and inspect its actual status line, headers, compression and connection closure.
  5. Review CloudFront and origin logs for the same request ID and timestamp.

Changing CloudFront behavior settings before proving the origin response can hide the underlying fault. Correct the DNS, certificate, protocol or application response that the evidence identifies, then allow the distribution configuration to propagate and retest.

Reverse-proxy and Nginx troubleshooting checklist

For a direct reverse proxy such as Nginx, start with the upstream block or equivalent configuration and compare it with the service that is actually running. Confirm the upstream host and port, protocol, host header requirements and any health-check path. A proxy that points to 127.0.0.1 on one machine will not reach an application running on a different host.

  1. Run the proxy’s configuration test before reload.
  2. Read the error log while making one test request so the matching upstream failure is visible.
  3. Run verbose curl against the upstream address and then against the public proxy address.
  4. Compare status, headers, compression and response length.
  5. Reload only after validation, and keep the prior configuration ready for rollback.

Messages about a prematurely closed upstream connection indicate that the origin terminated the response; messages about an invalid header or content length indicate a response-format problem. Treat those as different failure modes rather than raising a timeout for both.

Common causes mapped to the right fix

Failure mode What you will usually observe Most useful next action
Origin process stopped or crashed Direct curl cannot connect; application log shows a stop or crash Restore the service, then investigate the crash or resource event
Overload or exhausted workers Intermittent failures, high latency, queue growth or restarts Check CPU, memory, worker and connection limits and identify the expensive request
Firewall or security rule Proxy cannot connect while local requests succeed Allow the proxy, tunnel or health-check source at the correct port
DNS or routing error Proxy resolves the wrong address or cannot route to the origin Correct the record, route or origin hostname and retest resolution
TLS or protocol mismatch Handshake or certificate errors in proxy logs Align hostname, certificate, trust chain, scheme and supported protocol
Malformed response Direct service starts a response, then proxy rejects headers, compression or length Correct header generation, compression or content-length handling
Transient intermediary problem Origin is healthy and direct tests pass, but edge failures cluster briefly Collect request IDs and timestamps and escalate to the intermediary or host

When to escalate

Escalate after you have captured the exact URL, UTC time, status, headers and request ID, and have tested the origin separately. Visitors should send those details to the site owner or hosting provider. Administrators should provide the intermediary’s support team with direct-origin results, proxy and application log excerpts, the affected hostname, recent configuration changes and whether the failure is constant or intermittent. Do not include passwords, private keys, session cookies or other secrets in a support ticket.
