How to Fix an HTML Sitemap That Isn’t Showing the Right Pages

Fix the list at its source. An HTML sitemap is a normal website page that displays links for visitors, so missing or incorrect entries usually come from the CMS, theme, shortcode, plugin, custom code, exclusions, page status, or cached output that generates that page. Google’s XML or text sitemap tools cannot repair a visitor-facing HTML list.

First decide which thing is wrong: the visible HTML page, a sitemap file submitted to Google, or Google’s decision not to index a URL. They use related URLs but require different checks. This guide shows how to identify the failure, correct the generator, clean up URL variants, and then diagnose search-engine access separately.

Identify the sitemap you are actually troubleshooting

“Sitemap” can mean two different deliverables:

Deliverable What it looks like Primary purpose Where to diagnose it
HTML sitemap A normal, human-readable page containing clickable links Helps visitors browse important public pages Your CMS, theme, shortcode, plugin, custom template, and cache
XML or text sitemap A machine-readable file submitted to a search engine Helps search engines discover URL addresses Search Console’s Sitemaps report, the file itself, and URL-level reports

If the links displayed on a page are wrong, inspect the code or settings that render that page. If Search Console reports that a submitted file cannot be fetched or processed, inspect the file and its property settings. If a listed page is not appearing in search, use Page indexing and URL Inspection; sitemap inclusion alone is not an indexing command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google states: “A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs on your site, but it doesn’t guarantee that all the items in your sitemap will be crawled and indexed.” Google Search Central lists that page as last updated December 10, 2025. Discovery, crawling, canonical selection, and indexing are separate decisions.

Define the correct page set before changing settings

Do not start by toggling exclusions at random. Write down the pages the HTML sitemap is intended to show. For most sites, that means current, public pages that are useful to visitors, not every URL the database has ever stored.

Build a comparison list

  1. Open the live HTML sitemap in a private browser window so an administrator session cannot hide access problems.
  2. Export or review the CMS’s published-page inventory. Include the page types you intentionally want visitors to find, such as standard pages, selected posts, product or documentation entries, and carefully chosen archives.
  3. Mark each sitemap entry as correct, missing, stale, duplicated, redirected, private, or unnecessary.
  4. For each missing page, record its exact public URL and whether it is supposed to be included. This prevents a generator setting from being blamed for a page that was intentionally excluded.

Keep a single preferred URL for each page. Differences in protocol, hostname, uppercase letters, trailing slashes, parameters, or old slugs can create entries that look like separate pages even when they resolve to the same content.

Check every missing page directly

A generator cannot reliably include a page that is not publicly available in the way the generator expects. Test each missing URL while logged out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Published status: Confirm the page is published, not a draft, scheduled item, private entry, password-protected page, or item visible only to an administrator.
  • Successful response: The preferred URL should load without a server error. Note whether it returns a permanent redirect, temporary redirect, soft error page, or a login screen.
  • Correct content type: Verify that the page belongs to a content type the generator supports. A tool configured for standard pages may omit custom post types, knowledge-base records, media attachments, or commerce items.
  • Public navigation intent: Decide whether the page is genuinely useful to a visitor. Thin utility pages, internal search results, filter combinations, and account screens generally do not belong in a browseable sitemap.

If the URL fails this test, fix publication or access first. If it loads correctly but is absent from the list, continue with the generator’s inclusion rules.

Find the inclusion rule in the actual HTML sitemap generator

There is no universal CMS menu path. The rule may live in a core sitemap module, a theme template, a shortcode block, a plugin, a page-builder widget, or custom code. Identify the component that produced the visible page before changing it.

Inspect the page itself

  1. Edit the page that displays the sitemap and look for a shortcode, block, widget, template assignment, or embedded script.
  2. Check the page source or rendered markup for a distinctive class, heading, or generator comment. Search the CMS and installed extensions for that identifier.
  3. If the page is assembled by a theme template, locate the template’s query or loop. A custom query may deliberately limit post types, statuses, categories, depth, or publication dates.
  4. Check whether more than one tool is involved. For example, a page-builder block may call a plugin, while a cache or edge layer serves an older rendered copy.

Review the available controls

Names vary, but the relevant controls commonly concern:

  • Included post or page types
  • Categories, tags, taxonomies, and archives
  • Parent and child page depth
  • Published, private, scheduled, or password-protected status
  • Explicit include and exclude lists
  • URLs, IDs, slugs, or patterns omitted from output
  • Automatic refresh versus manually generated output
  • Sorting, pagination, and maximum-entry limits

Enable only the page types and taxonomies that match your intended list. Remove an obsolete exclusion or add a required content type where the tool supports it. Save the configuration, then use the tool’s regenerate, rebuild, or refresh command if one exists. Finally, open the public page in a private window and verify the actual links rather than relying on an editor preview.

Compare where the inclusion rules live

The right fix depends on the component that owns the list. These implementation choices are not interchangeable:

Generator Where to inspect Typical strength Typical pitfall
CMS core module Core settings and registered content types Usually updates from the site’s published inventory May expose few controls for exclusions or custom types
Theme template Template file, query, or loop Precise control over hierarchy and presentation A code-level filter can silently omit a type or status
Shortcode, block, or plugin The block settings and the extension’s sitemap options Often provides include, exclude, taxonomy, and sorting controls Manual regeneration, pagination, or an extension update may change output
Custom code The function, query, or endpoint that builds the HTML Can match an unusual information architecture Rules may be undocumented and can conflict with caching or another generator

Record which component produced the current page before editing anything. If disabling one extension changes nothing, another template, block, or cached copy may be serving the list. Make changes in a staging environment when possible, especially if the generator uses custom code or a database query.

Clear stale output and caches

A correct setting can appear broken when an old HTML page is still being served. Caching may exist in the CMS, a page-cache extension, a reverse proxy, a content delivery network, or a host-level cache.

  1. Save the generator settings and regenerate its output if the tool requires that step.
  2. Purge the page cache for the sitemap URL, not only the home page.
  3. Purge any reverse-proxy or CDN copy according to that service’s normal procedure.
  4. Load the URL with a cache-busting query only as a diagnostic; do not publish parameterized sitemap URLs.
  5. Check the response again from a logged-out browser and, if possible, from a second network. Confirm that the HTML contains the new link list.

If the list changes in the administrator preview but not publicly, the problem is almost certainly publication or caching rather than the inclusion rule itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove wrong URL variants and choose preferred canonicals

An HTML sitemap should normally point to the preferred, final URL for each page. Remove duplicate variants, obsolete slugs, and addresses that redirect elsewhere when the generator gives you control over entries.

Common errors to correct

  • HTTP links when the site’s preferred version is HTTPS
  • An old hostname after a domain migration
  • Both slash and non-slash forms when one redirects
  • Uppercase and lowercase versions of the same path
  • Tracking parameters or filter parameters that do not represent a distinct page
  • Old slugs that permanently redirect to a new address
  • Links to a language or regional variant that the page does not actually serve

Sitemap URLs are signals about preferred addresses, not guarantees that a search engine will select them as canonical. Google can choose a different canonical when it sees duplicate or conflicting evidence. Permanent redirects help consolidate old and new versions, but they do not make a redirected URL an ideal sitemap entry.

Separate HTML-list problems from crawl and index controls

A page may be present in your HTML sitemap and still be unavailable to a crawler or absent from search. Conversely, a page may be omitted from the HTML list even though it is perfectly indexable. Check these systems independently.

Robots.txt blocking

A robots.txt rule can restrict crawling of a path. It does not explain how a CMS decided to omit a page from its visitor-facing list, but it can explain why a search engine cannot fetch the page. Review the rule for the affected path and make sure it matches your intended crawl policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Noindex directives

A noindex meta tag or HTTP header asks search engines not to index a page. Removing it may be appropriate for a page meant to appear in search, but it should not be removed merely to make an HTML sitemap generator include the URL. Inclusion and indexability are separate choices.

Login requirements and access controls

Members-only, password-protected, or IP-restricted pages can be linked for authorized visitors but are not publicly accessible. Decide whether such a page belongs in a public HTML sitemap. If it does not, exclude it rather than exposing a dead-end link.

Redirects and duplicates

A redirecting URL can be discoverable but still not become the indexed URL. Inspect the final destination and place that destination in the HTML list when it is the page visitors should use.

Use Search Console for a sitemap file or a known URL

Only move to Search Console when the issue concerns Google’s sitemap file or indexing status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the submitted sitemap file is the problem

  1. Open the Sitemaps report for the exact Search Console property that owns the site.
  2. Confirm that the submitted address is the intended XML or text sitemap, not the human-facing HTML page.
  3. Verify that the file uses an accepted sitemap format, is syntactically valid, and can be fetched by Googlebot without a login or blocking response.
  4. Check the report for fetch, processing, or parsing errors and correct the file or server response indicated there.
  5. Resubmit the corrected file only after it is publicly reachable at the submitted address.

A successful fetch means Google could read the file. It does not mean that every URL will be crawled or indexed.

When one page is missing from Google

  1. Open URL Inspection and enter the page’s preferred URL.
  2. Review whether Google can access the page, which canonical it selected, and whether an indexing exclusion is reported.
  3. Use the Page indexing report to identify patterns such as redirects, duplicates, blocked resources, or noindex directives.
  4. Fix the underlying page or access issue, then request a recrawl if the interface offers that option.

Recrawling and indexing are not instantaneous, and a request does not guarantee inclusion. Allow time for Google to revisit the page and evaluate it.

Use a controlled before-and-after check

Make one logical change at a time and preserve the original configuration. First save the current HTML output or note a few representative links: one missing page, one child page, one excluded page, and one URL that should be removed. Change the inclusion rule, regenerate, purge the relevant cache, and check those same examples while logged out. This makes it clear whether the rule changed output or whether another layer is still masking the result.

Also check the rendered link target, not just its anchor text. A label can look correct while pointing to an old slug, a redirect, a different hostname, or a parameterized URL. Open each changed link and confirm that it lands on the intended final page.

Platform-independent decision table

Observed symptom Most useful next check What a successful fix looks like
A public page is absent from the HTML list Generator content-type, status, taxonomy, and exclusion settings The page’s preferred URL appears after saving and regenerating
An obsolete or duplicate URL appears Include/exclude list, slug history, redirects, and canonical URL Only the final preferred address remains
Editor preview is correct but visitors see old links Page, proxy, CDN, and host caches Logged-out requests return the new HTML
Search Console cannot read the submitted sitemap Correct property, file format, HTTP response, and Googlebot access The Sitemaps report shows a successful fetch or no processing error
The URL is in the file but not in search URL Inspection and Page indexing The reported access, canonical, or indexing issue is resolved; indexing may still take time

Final verification checklist

  • Every intended entry is published and loads while logged out.
  • No entry points to a login wall, obsolete slug, duplicate variant, or unnecessary utility URL.
  • The generator includes the required page types and has no accidental exclusion.
  • The sitemap page was regenerated and all relevant caches were purged.
  • Each link uses the preferred final URL and follows the site’s canonical format.
  • Search Console checks were performed only for the XML or text sitemap and Google indexing questions.
  • You have not treated the presence of a URL in any sitemap as proof that Google will crawl or index it.

If the HTML list still does not change after these checks, the remaining issue is implementation-specific: inspect the generator’s query or template, temporarily disable conflicting extensions in a safe staging environment, or ask the CMS or plugin maintainer for the exact inclusion rule used by that version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my HTML sitemap differ from the XML sitemap?

They are separate deliverables and may be generated by different components. The HTML page is controlled by your CMS, theme, shortcode, plugin, or custom template; the XML or text file is the machine-readable file submitted to Google. Fix the component that owns the list you can see.

Why is a published page still missing from the HTML sitemap?

Check that it is publicly published, loads while logged out, belongs to an included content type, and is not covered by a category, taxonomy, depth, ID, URL, or explicit exclusion. Save the setting and regenerate the output if the tool requires it.

Should I remove a noindex directive to make the page appear in the HTML sitemap?

Not automatically. A noindex directive controls search-engine indexing, while HTML sitemap inclusion is controlled by the generator. Remove noindex only when the page is intended to be indexed and the page-level indexing decision supports that change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should an HTML sitemap include URLs that redirect?

Usually it should link to the preferred final destination instead. Remove obsolete or duplicate addresses when the generator allows it, and retain the redirect only where it has a deliberate visitor-navigation purpose.

Why does the editor show the corrected list but visitors still see old links?

A page cache, reverse proxy, CDN, host cache, or manually generated output may still be serving an older copy. Regenerate the sitemap, purge the cache for that URL at each layer, and verify the HTML while logged out.

Which Search Console report should I use?

Use the Sitemaps report for a submitted XML or text file’s fetch and processing status. Use URL Inspection and Page indexing for a known URL’s accessibility, canonical selection, redirects, noindex status, or indexing outcome.

Does adding a URL to a sitemap guarantee that Google will index it?

No. A sitemap helps Google discover URLs, but crawling and indexing remain separate decisions. Google may select another canonical, report an exclusion, or simply take time to recrawl the page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long will it take for Google to reflect a fix?

Recrawling and indexing are not instantaneous. A recrawl request can prompt another visit, but it does not guarantee inclusion. Continue checking the individual URL after Google has had time to process the change.

The Bottom Line

An incorrect HTML sitemap is usually a generator, publication, URL-variant, or cache problem—not a Search Console problem. Define the intended public pages, test each missing URL while logged out, correct the component’s inclusion rules, regenerate and purge caches, then use Search Console only for sitemap-file and indexing diagnostics. A clean link list improves navigation, but it never commands Google to crawl or index every URL.
