If your HP inkjet printer will not connect to Wi-Fi, start by checking the network used by your phone or computer. Then restore the printer’s Wi-Fi setup mode and add it again in the HP app or your model’s setup software. HP says setup mode lasts up to two hours, so complete the guided setup soon after restoring it. If the app still cannot find the printer, check discovery permissions, restart the network devices, and use the printer’s Wireless Network Test report to look for a weak signal or failed connection.
The order matters. A printer can fail because the setup device is on the wrong network, because the printer is no longer accepting wireless credentials, because the app cannot discover it, or because the wireless signal is poor. Those causes need different fixes. Work through the checks below instead of repeatedly changing settings at random.

Start with the network the printer is supposed to join
For ordinary home-network printing, the printer and the phone or computer used to set it up need access to the same local network. Before changing printer settings, check that the client device is connected to the intended home Wi-Fi and can access the internet. If it is not, fix that connection first; a printer cannot complete setup through a device that is itself disconnected from the network you want to use.
Check the network name carefully, especially if your router broadcasts more than one network name. The setup device should remain on the network you intend to give the printer. If you switch networks while the HP app is searching, discovery can fail even though the printer is ready.

Do not select the printer’s DIRECT-xx-HP Wi-Fi Direct signal as though it were your home Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi Direct is a separate, direct connection to the printer, not the shared local network used for ordinary home-network setup. Choosing it instead can leave the printer disconnected from the network you intended to configure. It may be useful in a different situation, but it is not a substitute for joining the printer to your home network.
Also consider how the network is administered. Guest and public networks can require a sign-in or confirmation page, or restrict communication between connected devices. Either condition may prevent the HP app from discovering or setting up a printer. A device may appear to have internet access on such a network while still being unable to communicate with another device on it.
If you are using a guest network, try the regular home network when you are authorized to do so. If shared-network access is unavailable or the network’s restrictions cannot be changed, Wi-Fi Direct may be an alternative for connecting directly, depending on the printer and situation. Treat this as a choice based on access requirements, not as a universal cure for a failed setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRestore Wi-Fi setup mode and add the printer again
Restoring Wi-Fi setup mode puts the printer back into a state where it can accept a wireless connection. This is usually the most important step when the printer was previously connected, the router details changed, or a setup attempt was abandoned. Restoring the mode does not finish the connection; it only makes the printer ready for the guided process.
The exact controls vary by printer model, so there is no single button combination that should be applied to every HP inkjet printer.
- Find the instructions for your exact printer model. Use HP’s model-specific wireless troubleshooting or setup guidance. A touchscreen printer may offer a menu path such as Wireless or Setup, followed by Network Setup or Settings, and then Restore Network Settings. Treat those labels as examples, not a guaranteed path for every model.
- If your printer has no touchscreen, use its model-specific button sequence. Do not guess at a combination based on another printer. The correct sequence depends on the model, and a wrong sequence may simply do nothing or change a different setting.
- Open the HP app or setup software and add the printer. Follow the guided wireless setup and choose the home network the printer should join. Keep the printer powered on and near enough to the router for the setup attempt while you work through the prompts.
- Finish promptly. HP says Wi-Fi setup mode lasts up to two hours after it is restored. HP Support’s setup guidance says: “Within two hours of restoring Wi-Fi setup mode, follow the guided steps in the HP app to add the printer and set up the wireless connection.” If that window has passed, restore setup mode again using the instructions for your model, then retry.
If the printer was previously configured for a different router or network name, restoring setup mode allows the new details to be entered through the normal setup flow. It does not preserve the assumption that the old network is still available.
When the app offers more than one printer, use the identification information it provides and select the printer you are actually configuring. Avoid repeatedly starting setup without first restoring setup mode when the previous setup window has expired. The app needs the printer to be in its ready-to-configure state.

- Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on the phone or computer and that it is connected to the intended home network.
- Enable Bluetooth on the device during setup when the HP app requests or uses it.
- On a mobile device, check that the HP app has the location permissions HP’s troubleshooting guidance calls out for setup.
- If the device is connected to a VPN, disconnect from the VPN while setting up the printer, then retry discovery.
These checks are temporary setup measures, not indications that the printer must use Bluetooth or that a VPN is permanently incompatible with printing. The goal is to remove conditions that can prevent the app from seeing a nearby printer during onboarding. After setup succeeds, you can review your normal device settings.
After checking these settings, return to the HP app and run its add-printer flow again while the printer is in Wi-Fi setup mode. If the app still does not find it, proceed to a restart and another setup attempt before considering a broader reset. Keep the app open during the guided process and follow its prompts rather than trying to add the printer as a generic device through a different menu.
Restart the printer, router, and setup device
A restart is a useful next step when a temporary connection or discovery problem persists. Restart the printer, the router, and the computer or mobile device you are using, then reopen the HP app or setup software and try again. Restarting only the printer leaves the other parts of the setup path untouched, so include the network equipment and client device in this step.
Allow each device to finish starting before you retry. Once the devices are back on, verify that the phone or computer has rejoined the intended home network. If the printer needs setup mode restored again, use the instructions for its exact model and then return to the guided setup promptly.
Do not assume that a restart has changed the Wi-Fi credentials saved on the printer or completed a new connection. A restart clears a temporary state; it is not the same as restoring Wi-Fi setup mode. If the router or network name changed, you still need to run the wireless setup with the current details.
Use the Wireless Network Test report to check the connection
If setup still fails, print the printer’s Wireless Network Test report and inspect its connection information and signal-strength indication. This report can help distinguish a printer that has not established a wireless connection from one whose signal may be too weak where it is placed. Follow the printer’s model-specific instructions to print and interpret the report, because controls and report details can differ.
Read the report as a diagnostic clue rather than a final verdict. Connection information can show whether the printer is communicating with the wireless network, while the signal indication can point toward placement or coverage trouble. If the printer is not connected at all, moving it may not address the real cause; restore setup mode and check network selection and discovery first.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the report points to weak signal, try improving the printer’s placement before adding equipment. Reduce the distance between the printer and router where practical, and consider whether walls, furniture, or other obstacles along the wireless path may be affecting communication. Make one placement change at a time, then print or check the report again to see whether the signal indication has improved.

A Wi-Fi range extender is relevant only when the evidence points to weak coverage farther from the router. It may improve signal near the printer, but it will not correct an incorrect network choice, a setup mode that is no longer active, app discovery permissions, a VPN-related setup issue, or guest-network isolation. Do not treat an extender as a general fix for every printer connection problem. If the report does not suggest weak signal, solve the network or discovery issue instead of buying additional hardware.
Choose the connection method that fits the problem
| Option | What it is for | When it fits | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Wi-Fi | Connects the printer to the shared home network for ordinary network printing. | Use this for the usual home setup when the printer and setup device can access the same local network. | It will not work through a network that blocks device-to-device communication or through an incomplete setup. |
| Wi-Fi Direct | Creates a direct wireless connection to the printer rather than joining the shared local network. | Consider it when shared-network access is unavailable or guest-network restrictions interfere, if it is suitable for your printer and needs. | It is not the same as adding the printer to your home Wi-Fi. |
| Wi-Fi range extender | Can improve wireless signal farther from the router. | Consider it only when the Wireless Network Test report and printer placement point to weak signal. | It does not fix credentials, setup mode, app permissions, VPN discovery problems, or network isolation. |
These options address different causes. Wi-Fi Direct is not another name for connecting the printer to home Wi-Fi, and a range extender does not bypass setup or network-access restrictions. Decide first whether the problem is access to the shared network, direct connection availability, or signal strength.
Reconnect after a router or Wi-Fi settings change
If the printer stopped connecting after you changed the router or wireless network settings, the printer may need to be set up with the new network details. Restore Wi-Fi setup mode using the instructions for the exact model, then run the HP app or the printer’s model-specific connection process and select the network you now use.
Keep the setup device connected to that intended network while you work. If the new network is a guest network that requires a login or limits device-to-device communication, the app may still be unable to find the printer; use an appropriate home network or consider whether a direct connection better fits the situation.
Do not treat a router change as proof that the printer hardware has failed. A changed network name, password, or access arrangement can simply make the old saved connection unusable. Restoring setup mode and completing the guided setup gives the printer a chance to accept the current network information.
When the printer is connected but still appears unavailable
A printer that appears offline or unavailable is not necessarily failing at initial Wi-Fi setup. If the printer has joined the network but the app or computer still cannot use it, follow HP’s guidance for a printer that is not found or shows as offline. That symptom deserves a discovery or availability check rather than automatically repeating every Wi-Fi setup step.
First distinguish the symptom: “cannot connect” usually means the printer has not completed wireless setup, while “connected but unavailable” means the printer may already be on the network and the remaining problem is finding or reaching it. The same remedies are not interchangeable. Check that the computer or phone is still on the same local network and that you have not switched to DIRECT-xx-HP or a restricted guest network.

A practical order for the next attempt
To avoid changing several things at once, work through the checks in order and retry setup after addressing the likely cause:
- Confirm the phone or computer has working internet and is connected to the home network the printer should use.
- Make sure you have not joined
DIRECT-xx-HPby mistake when your goal is ordinary local-network printing. - Check whether the network is guest or public and whether it requires a sign-in or restricts communication between devices.
- Restore Wi-Fi setup mode using HP’s instructions for the exact printer model.
- Enable device Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, grant any relevant mobile location permission, and disconnect from a VPN during setup.
- Use the HP app or setup software to add the printer before the setup-mode window expires.
- If discovery or connection still fails, restart the printer, router, and setup device, then retry.
- If it remains unresolved, print the Wireless Network Test report and use its connection and signal information to choose between placement changes, another setup attempt, or a different troubleshooting path.
- Use a range extender only if the report and placement test indicate weak coverage. Consider Wi-Fi Direct only when a direct connection is appropriate for the situation.
This sequence keeps network selection, setup mode, app discovery, and signal strength separate. That distinction matters: repeating a setup attempt will not solve a weak signal, and improving signal will not fix an app permission or guest-network restriction.

How long do I have to add the printer after restoring setup mode?
HP says setup mode lasts up to two hours. Use the HP app or setup software within that period. If the window expires, restore Wi-Fi setup mode again using the instructions for the exact printer model.
Should I connect my phone to DIRECT-xx-HP?
Only when a direct Wi-Fi Direct connection fits your situation. For ordinary home-network printing, keep the phone or computer on the intended home network and configure the printer to join that network. DIRECT-xx-HP is not the shared home Wi-Fi connection.
Will restarting the router fix the printer?
It can clear a temporary network or discovery problem, but restart the printer and setup device as well, then retry the guided setup. A restart does not automatically update saved network details or restore an expired setup mode.
What does the Wireless Network Test report tell me?
It provides connection information and a signal-strength indication. Use it to decide whether the printer is failing to establish a connection or whether placement and coverage may be affecting communication. Follow your model’s instructions for printing and interpreting the report.
Should I buy a Wi-Fi range extender?
Only consider one after checking the report and trying better placement. An extender can help when the printer is far from the router or obstacles weaken coverage. It will not fix wrong credentials, inactive setup mode, VPN or app discovery issues, or guest-network isolation.
