How to Fix an FFmpeg YouTube Stream That Stops on an Indian VPS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with FFmpeg’s error output, not the VPS’s location. An Indian VPS is not, by itself, evidence of the cause. If FFmpeg keeps reading and encoding while output writes fail, verify YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint and consider FFmpeg’s FIFO recovery options. If the process exits or the input stops first, troubleshoot that failure instead.

First identify what stopped

RTMP publishing uses a TCP connection, so an output connection failure can interrupt writes even while the input and encoding continue. The symptom alone does not identify whether the cause is the source, FFmpeg process, YouTube endpoint, or network path. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP’s TCP transport.

Preserve evidence before changing anything

  • Save the full FFmpeg command, but redact the stream key. Never post the key publicly or include it in a support ticket.
  • Record the FFmpeg version and build, the input type, and the failure timestamp with time zone.
  • Keep the complete stderr output around the failure, not just the final line. Note whether FFmpeg exited or remained running, and whether input frames or timestamps continued.
  • Check YouTube Live Control Room: did the encoder show as disconnected, or was it connected but unhealthy?
  • If available, preserve timestamped network observations and check whether your VPS provider reported maintenance or host/network events at the same time.

Follow the branch that matches the evidence

  • FFmpeg exited: inspect the first error and the process supervisor or service logs. A restart policy can relaunch a process that exits; it does not repair a persistently broken route or output connection.
  • FFmpeg remains alive, but output writes fail: errors such as a broken pipe or I/O error point toward the output path as an area to investigate. Verify the active YouTube endpoint, then consider FIFO recovery below. These errors do not prove that the VPS provider is at fault.
  • Input frames or timestamps stop first: investigate the input source or demuxing path before changing YouTube output settings.
  • FFmpeg reports output but YouTube does not ingest: check the current server URL, stream key, live-stream state, encoder compatibility, and Live Control Room status.

Verify YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL and directs creators to get the URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The ordinary RTMP URL may be shown by default. Use the active URL shown for your stream rather than guessing a hostname, and make sure your encoder supports RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

If the log reports an SSL or certificate error

  1. Check that the URL from Live Control Room begins with rtmps and that it is the correct server URL.
  2. If the SSL error persists, YouTube advises trying port 443 when the URL permits specifying a port. Do not substitute a guessed server or port.
  3. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build and output protocol support the URL you are using.

If the log reports a connection timeout

Recheck the active server URL and RTMPS support. A timeout is not, on its own, proof of a regional outage or provider fault. Preserve its timestamp and compare it with other connection and provider evidence.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Configure FFmpeg FIFO recovery for temporary output failures

FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer queues output separately from encoding and runs the actual muxer in a separate thread. Its recovery option can retry network output after a failure. The official FIFO muxer documentation gives this illustrative command:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name

INPUT and rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name are placeholders. Replace them with your real input and YouTube output details; handle the stream key securely. Confirm the options are available in your installed FFmpeg build, and test with a noncritical stream before relying on the configuration.

Choose what happens if the FIFO queue fills

With -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, FFmpeg can drop queued packets instead of blocking the encoder when the queue fills. This lets processing continue in real time, but viewers may miss content. Without dropping, encoding can wait for the muxer to catch up. Neither choice guarantees a seamless stream: reconnecting cannot restore packets already missed.

Set a retry policy deliberately

-attempt_recovery 1 requests recovery; it cannot guarantee the server will accept a reconnect. In the manual’s example, -recovery_wait_time 1 is a one-second retry interval, not a universal best setting. FFmpeg documents max_recovery_attempts as defaulting to zero, meaning unlimited attempts; set a limit if endless retries are undesirable. Review the manual’s FIFO options for the installed version and choose a policy appropriate to your stream.

Know what TCP keepalive can and cannot do

FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol supports tcp_keepalive=1, which enables the operating system’s basic SO_KEEPALIVE mechanism to detect dead peers on long-lived idle connections. FFmpeg’s option does not set platform-specific values such as TCP_KEEPIDLE; operating-system defaults apply. Keepalive is not a reconnect loop, a bandwidth fix, or a general remedy for an actively sending stream that stops. See FFmpeg’s protocol options.

Escalate with specific network evidence

If logs show repeated resets, timeouts, or output failures, give your VPS provider enough information to investigate the relevant window without exposing credentials:

  • UTC timestamps and time zone of the failures;
  • the destination hostname and port, but never the stream key;
  • FFmpeg stderr and whether the process and input remained healthy;
  • timestamped latency or packet-loss observations, if available.

Ask whether outbound path stability, firewall or egress policy, maintenance, or host-level network events could explain those timestamps. These are investigation questions, not evidence that the provider caused the issue. If you compare another region or provider, change one variable at a time and record the same observations. The available documentation does not establish an India-specific failure pattern or implicate any particular Indian VPS company or region.
