How to Fix an FFmpeg YouTube Livestream With Audio but No Video

If your YouTube livestream has sound but no picture, first check whether FFmpeg receives video at all. Then inspect the output’s -map options and confirm that -vn is not disabling video. If video is present in a local output but missing from YouTube’s preview, check the encoder settings, destination and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.

Diagnose where the video disappears

Follow the video from source to YouTube rather than changing several settings at once. Check these points in order:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Does the FFmpeg input contain a video stream?
  2. Does the command select and encode that video for the output?
  3. Does a local recording or encoder preview show the picture?
  4. Does YouTube Live Control Room show it in the preview, and does stream health report an issue?

The first point where video is missing narrows the cause. Without your command, input stream listing and preview status, there is no single confirmed fix.

1. Confirm FFmpeg is receiving video

Read the input section of FFmpeg’s console output. It should list a video stream as well as audio; if it lists only audio, changing YouTube’s output settings cannot restore a picture that never reached FFmpeg.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  • If the input is a file, check that the file plays with both picture and sound.
  • If it is a camera, capture device or live feed, check that source and its selected input independently.
  • Where possible, compare the encoder preview or a short local recording with the original source.

YouTube recommends checking the picture and sound in the encoder and reviewing a local archive when troubleshooting. See YouTube’s livestream troubleshooting guidance and instructions for creating a live stream.

2. Inspect FFmpeg stream mapping and video-suppression options

Look at every output-specific -map option. FFmpeg’s -map controls which input streams go into an output. Once you specify manual mapping for an output, FFmpeg does not use its default automatic stream selection for that output. A mapping such as -map 0:a selects audio only.

Also search the command for -vn, which explicitly disables video for the output it applies to. Remove or correct it if video is meant to be sent. FFmpeg documents these options in its stream-selection reference.

  • Check that the selected input index actually contains video; do not assume every source uses the same stream layout.
  • If a filtergraph produces the video, ensure its labeled output is mapped to the intended output exactly once.
  • Keep mapping and output options associated with the correct output when a command writes to more than one destination.

There is no safe universal mapping to paste without seeing the input listing and filtergraph. Share the relevant command and logs when asking for help, but redact the stream key.

3. Check the video encoder and YouTube ingest settings

If FFmpeg receives and outputs video locally, compare its output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and read the Live Control Room health messages. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, and AAC or MP3 audio codecs. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, square pixels, progressive scan and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (not more than 4 seconds). These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that any given FFmpeg build supports every codec or that every protocol or ingest mode accepts every listed option. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Use the health messages in Live Control Room to identify reported problems such as unsupported codec/audio combinations or incorrect video settings; consult YouTube’s live-stream error guidance. Confirm the output muxing and protocol too, rather than assuming a setting change is needed just because viewers hear audio.

4. Compare local output with YouTube’s preview

Before a public event, test with an unlisted stream or use Live Control Room’s preview. If a local recording or encoder preview has video but YouTube’s preview does not, focus on the output sent to YouTube: stream mapping, codec and other ingest settings, protocol, destination, and any stream-health warnings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wait for the preview to appear before selecting Go live, as YouTube’s setup instructions advise. Monitor stream health during the broadcast; YouTube also recommends this in its streaming tips.

5. Check encoder health and outbound connection

If video is present in the encoder but the stream is unstable or YouTube reports problems, check for encoder errors and high CPU load, and make sure you are using a current encoder version. YouTube recommends testing the outbound connection if the encoder appears healthy. Its network tips advise leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available as headroom. That is a planning recommendation, not proof that bandwidth is the cause of a missing picture.

6. Verify the YouTube destination and stream key

Compare the destination server URL and stream key in FFmpeg with the active stream’s values in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion; use the server and settings appropriate to the active stream. A destination or key mismatch can prevent the intended stream from receiving the output, even if FFmpeg is producing video. Never post a working stream key publicly; redact it from commands and logs before sharing them.

Common symptoms and what to check

What you see Most useful next check
FFmpeg’s input listing has audio but no video Check the source file, input URL or capture-device selection before changing YouTube settings.
The input has video, but the outgoing stream is audio-only Inspect output-specific -map options, -vn, and filtergraph output mapping.
A local output has video, but YouTube preview does not Check the output’s codec, muxing and protocol, destination values, and Live Control Room health messages.
The preview appears but video or audio is unstable Check encoder errors and CPU load, test outbound connectivity, and review YouTube’s stream-health guidance.

What to include when asking for help

To identify the exact fault, provide the FFmpeg version, the complete command with the stream key redacted, the input stream listing, relevant output logs, and whether video appears in a local output and in Live Control Room preview. Include any health warning verbatim, but do not expose credentials.
