Start by reseating the cable at both ends, confirming that it is plugged into the correct jacks, and checking the link indicators. Then substitute a known-good Cat5e or Cat6 patch cable, try another LAN port, and test another device. Those controlled swaps usually show whether the cable, a port, the computer, or the internet connection is responsible.
A cable that appears connected is not automatically healthy: Cisco’s LAN-switching guidance cautions that “A link light does not guarantee that the cable is fully functional.” If a wired link is present but websites still fail, stop treating the symptom as a cable fault and troubleshoot the device, IP configuration, modem, router, or service instead.

Identify what “won’t connect” means
There are two different failures that readers commonly describe as a bad Ethernet cable:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- No physical link: the computer and network equipment do not detect each other. The Ethernet port may show no light, Windows may report that the cable is unplugged, or the connection may repeatedly connect and disconnect.
- Physical link but no internet: the port lights are on and the computer says it is connected, but websites and online apps cannot reach the internet. That points higher in the network path—device settings, IP addressing, the modem, the router, or the internet service provider.
Keep those cases separate. Replacing a cable cannot repair an incorrect IP configuration or an offline service, while changing network settings will not fix a broken conductor.

Use this quick diagnosis table
| What you observe | Most likely area | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| No link light at either end | Plug seating, damaged cable, disabled or damaged port | Reseat and inspect both ends, then try a known-good cable and another LAN port. |
| One end has a light, the other does not | Port detection, plug contact, or cable wiring | Swap the cable and test the same port with another device. |
| Link light is on, but the connection drops | Marginal cable, stressed plug, loose jack, or endpoint issue | Replace the cable temporarily and avoid moving it while testing. |
| Link is stable, but websites do not load | IP configuration, router, modem, or ISP | Check the device’s network status and restart the modem/router according to its instructions. |
| Another device works on the same cable and port | Original computer, adapter, or its settings | Work on that computer rather than replacing the cable again. |
| No device works on the same cable and port | Cable, wall run, or network port | Use a known-good cable and a different LAN port; test fixed wiring if the fault remains. |
Step 1: Reseat and inspect every connection
- Disconnect both ends. Remove the plug from the computer, dock, game console, or other endpoint, and remove the other plug from the router, switch, wall jack, or other network device.
- Check the plugs. Look for a cracked latch, bent or missing metal contacts, a plug that does not stay seated, or dirt blocking the contact area. Cisco recommends checking both connection ends and looking for damaged or missing contacts.
- Inspect the jacks. Make sure no obstruction is preventing the plug from clicking fully into place. A loose jack or a damaged retaining tab can let the plug sit far enough out to lose contact.
- Reconnect firmly. Push each plug straight in until it is fully seated. Do not force it at an angle or pull on the cable to remove it.
- Verify the port type. A computer-to-router cable belongs in one of the router’s Ethernet/LAN ports, not the Internet/WAN port. The WAN/Internet port normally connects the router to the modem; using it for the computer can produce a misleading “cable problem.”
If the cable runs through a wall, also check that both wall jacks are intended to connect to the same network and that any patch panel or switch in between is powered.
Step 2: Read the link and activity lights correctly
Many Ethernet ports have small link or activity LEDs. A steady light commonly indicates that the two ports have negotiated a physical link; blinking often indicates traffic. The exact colors and behavior vary by manufacturer, and some computers, adapters, wall jacks, and switches have no visible LEDs.
- No light: the endpoint may not be detecting the connection. Reseat the plugs, then move to cable and port substitution.
- Light on but no network access: the physical connection may be fine. Continue to device, IP, router, or service checks.
- Light flickers when the cable moves: suspect a stressed plug, damaged conductor, or loose jack. Replace the patch cable before drawing a conclusion about the router.
Do not use an LED as a cable-quality certificate. Cisco explicitly notes that a link light does not guarantee that the cable is fully functional; a stressed cable can retain link while operating marginally.

The fastest cable test is not a visual inspection or a light—it is substitution. Find a cable that is already working in a similar connection, disconnect it, and use it in the problem path without changing anything else.
- Leave the original endpoint and network port selected.
- Replace only the suspect cable with the known-good one.
- Wait for the link indication or wired-connection status to update.
- Try a local network task, such as opening the router’s management page if you normally use one, before judging internet access.
If the connection becomes reliable with the substitute, the original cable is the leading suspect. If nothing changes, return the known-good cable to its original connection and continue testing; the fault may be a port, endpoint, fixed run, or higher-level network problem.

For a replacement patch cable, Cat5e or Cat6 is a sensible choice for ordinary home and office Ethernet. Linksys recommends trying a known-good cable and identifies Cat5e, Cat6, or higher in its router troubleshooting guidance. Match the cable to the existing installation rather than buying a higher category as a cure for a damaged jack.
Step 4: Change one endpoint at a time
Changing several things at once makes a diagnosis ambiguous. Use one-variable tests in this order:
Try another LAN port
Move the cable from the current router or switch LAN port to another LAN port. Keep the same endpoint and cable. If the second port works, the first port may be disabled or damaged. If neither works, continue with the next test.
Test another device
Connect a second computer or other Ethernet-capable device to the same cable and port. If the second device works, the original device, its Ethernet adapter, dock, or operating-system settings are more likely than the cable. If the second device also fails, the cable, port, or intervening wall run remains suspect.
Test the original device elsewhere
When possible, connect the original computer to a different known-good cable and LAN port. This cross-check separates a device-side fault from a location-side fault without guessing.

Step 5: Separate a local Ethernet link from internet access
A wired link only covers the short connection between the endpoint and the nearby network device. Internet access requires the router, modem, IP configuration, and the provider to work as well.
On Windows 10 and Windows 11
Microsoft’s support guidance applies to both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Open the network controls from the taskbar or Settings and confirm that the Ethernet connection is recognized rather than reported as unplugged. In Windows 11, use the built-in Network and Internet troubleshooter when Windows offers it. The exact wording can vary with the Windows release, but the purpose is to identify a disabled adapter, missing configuration, or failed connection.
If Windows shows a wired connection yet pages remain unreachable, do not keep replacing cables. Check whether other devices on the same router can reach the internet. If all devices fail, follow the modem and router manufacturer’s restart procedure: power down the equipment in the order specified by its instructions, allow it to finish shutting down, then restore power and wait for its normal status indicators. Microsoft also recommends restarting the modem and router as part of Ethernet troubleshooting.
Check IP and router conditions
Linksys and TP-Link identify IP configuration as another possible cause after the physical link is established. Look for an address or network-status warning on the endpoint, and check the router’s status page if you have access. A cable swap cannot correct an invalid address, a disabled adapter, a router that has lost its upstream connection, or an ISP outage.
Testing another device is especially useful here: if every device has a link but none can reach the internet, focus on the router, modem, or service. If only one device fails, focus on that device’s adapter and network configuration.

Step 6: Diagnose fixed or in-wall Ethernet runs
A short patch cable is easy to replace. A cable hidden in a wall, ceiling, or conduit is not. If a known-good patch cable works at the equipment but the wall outlet still fails, the permanent run, its terminations, or a patch-panel connection may be at fault.
What a basic cable tester can reveal
An Ethernet or RJ45 cable tester is optional for most home patch-cable problems because substitution is simpler. It becomes useful for self-terminated cables and fixed runs. The tester’s main unit and remote unit check whether the conductors appear in the expected sequence and can identify common opens, shorts, and miswires.
- Disconnect the run from powered network equipment.
- Plug one end into the tester’s main unit and the far end into its remote unit, using the adapters supplied with the tester if the run terminates at wall jacks.
- Start the test and compare the displayed conductor sequence with the tester’s documented normal pattern.
- Record whether the result indicates an open conductor, a short, or a pair/conductor mapped to the wrong position.
- Retest after correcting a termination, then reconnect the run to the network.
A basic tester checks continuity and wiring order; it does not certify every speed, shielding, crosstalk, or performance characteristic. Treat an unclear result as a reason to stop swapping random patch cables and have the fixed wiring examined by a qualified network installer.

“Ethernet cable unplugged” appears immediately
Reseat both ends and confirm the plug is in a LAN port. If the message persists, use the known-good-cable test, then another LAN port. If a second device also reports no link, investigate the port or fixed run.

The link light is on, but there is no internet
Test another device on the same router. If it also cannot get online, restart the modem/router according to its instructions and check for an upstream service problem. If other devices work, use Windows network status and troubleshooting on the affected computer and inspect its IP configuration.
Only one router port fails
Move the same cable and device to another LAN port. A working second port isolates the problem to the first port; leave that port unused or replace the network equipment if the manufacturer confirms a hardware fault.
The problem is intermittent across several cables
Several failed cables are less likely than a loose jack, damaged port, unstable adapter, or fixed-run fault. Test another device and another port, then use a cable tester or installer for the permanent wiring.
When replacing the cable is the right fix
Replace the cable when a known-good substitute restores a stable link in the same endpoint and port, or when inspection finds a broken latch, damaged contacts, crushed section, or intermittent behavior that follows the cable. A Cat5e or Cat6 patch cable is an appropriate replacement for typical home and office Ethernet.
Do not buy repeated replacement cables when the same known-good cable fails in one port, when another device works in that port, or when the wired link is stable but internet access is unavailable. Those results point away from the removable cable.
When to escalate
- Contact the network-equipment manufacturer when one or more LAN ports remain dead after cable and device substitution.
- Contact a qualified network installer when an in-wall run tests open, shorted, or miswired, or when the cable path cannot be safely accessed.
- Contact the ISP when multiple devices have working local links but lose internet access after the modem/router has been restarted as instructed.
- Seek device or operating-system support when another device works on the same cable and port but the original computer does not.
A compact troubleshooting checklist
- Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends.
- Inspect plugs, contacts, and jacks for damage or obstruction.
- Confirm the computer is in a router LAN/Ethernet port, not the WAN/Internet port.
- Observe link/activity indicators, without treating them as proof of cable quality.
- Substitute a known-good Cat5e or Cat6 cable.
- Try another LAN port.
- Test another device on the same cable and port.
- If the link is present but internet access fails, check device status, IP configuration, modem, router, and ISP conditions.
- For fixed wiring, use a basic tester for opens, shorts, and miswires or have the run inspected professionally.
Documentation used for the procedure
The connection and restart guidance is consistent with Microsoft Support documentation for Windows 10 and Windows 11, and troubleshooting guidance from Linksys, Cisco, and TP-Link. TP-Link’s cited article was updated May 7, 2026. The cable-tester details come from a tester manual and describe continuity and wiring checks rather than independent certification. No claim here depends on a particular cable brand or on a laboratory failure rate.
