If Microsoft Edge shows 08007007e, do not assume the number identifies a known Edge fault. The exact string is not defined in the Microsoft Edge support and Learn material used for this guide, so it may be truncated or mistyped. Copy the message again, including any 0x prefix, punctuation, and the action that triggered it. Then follow the branch below that matches your symptom: a crash on launch, a crash while loading a page, or an installation or update failure.
Choose the troubleshooting path that matches the symptom
The same visible message can accompany different failures. Start with the point at which Edge stops responding, and note whether you can reach its Settings screen.

| What happens | Can Edge reach Settings? | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Edge opens and then closes, or will not open at all | No | Reduce memory use, restart Windows, update Edge if possible, scan for malware, then use Windows Repair. |
| Edge opens, but one tab or pages become unresponsive | Usually yes | Close unnecessary tabs and extensions, reload, and clear cached data if the problem continues. |
| The message appears while Edge is installing or updating | Not relevant | Check permissions, Windows Update, network and DNS, date and time, storage, compatibility, security software, and old installation files. |
| Crashes continue after the standard steps | Sometimes | Collect the newest edge://crashes ID and the matching Windows Application Error event for escalation. |
These branches are more useful than treating 08007007e as a confirmed diagnosis. Microsoft’s published troubleshooting sequence is symptom-based, and the code itself is not mapped in the cited documentation.
Verify and record the message before changing anything
A single missing character can send you to the wrong fix. Before clearing data or repairing the browser, write down:

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- The complete code, including a leading
0x, if one appears. - Capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and the surrounding sentence.
- Whether Edge crashed during launch, while opening a particular page, during a download, or during an update.
- Whether only one tab closed or the entire browser disappeared.
- What had just changed, such as an update attempt, an extension installation, or a restart.
If the message came from a dialog, take a screenshot as well as copying the text. If you later contact support, this context is more actionable than the number alone. Do not substitute a similarly shaped Windows code from another application; the documented Microsoft steps below apply to Edge symptoms, not to every error that happens to contain similar digits.
Apply the low-risk recovery steps first
Close excess tabs, extensions, and applications
When Edge is open, close tabs you are not using and exit other applications that are consuming memory. Reload the tab that failed. Microsoft also recommends uninstalling extensions that you do not need. An extension can affect every page, so remove unneeded extensions rather than repeatedly reopening the same failing tab.
If Edge closes before you can do this, close other running applications first and try launching Edge again. The purpose of this step is to release memory and reduce the number of components that can fail at the same time; it does not establish that memory is the cause of 08007007e.
Update Edge and restart Windows
In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Apply an available update, then restart the computer and test Edge again. Restarting after an update matters because the browser and its update components may not be using the same files until Windows has restarted.
If Edge cannot stay open long enough to reach About Microsoft Edge, continue with the Windows Repair step below. If the update itself fails, use the installation and update checklist rather than repeating the same failed update indefinitely.
Scan for malware and check security software
Run a malware scan on the device. Also make sure any third-party security software, including antivirus software, is current. Security software can interfere with browser files or update activity when it is out of date or misconfigured; keeping it current is Microsoft’s first-line guidance. This step is a check, not proof that malware caused the crash.
If Edge opens: clear browsing data carefully
Clearing cached data is most relevant when Edge opens but pages or the browser become unresponsive. Open Edge’s browsing-data controls from its Settings area, choose the time range All time when you need to remove the accumulated cache, and select cached images and files. Microsoft distinguishes this from the separate option to clear all browsing data.

Use the narrowest selection that tests your problem. Clearing cached images and files targets temporary page data; clearing all browsing data is a broader action and can remove additional browser information. After the operation completes, close and reopen Edge, then load the page that previously failed.
If the crash occurs only on one page, test another page after the cache is cleared. If every page still causes Edge to close, move to Repair rather than repeatedly deleting the cache. Cache clearing cannot correct an installation failure that happens before the browser opens.
Repair Microsoft Edge from Windows
Windows includes a built-in Repair action for Edge. It is the main remediation when Edge repeatedly crashes, opens and closes, or cannot complete normal troubleshooting. Microsoft states that Repair should not affect your browser data or settings, although you should still record important account or synchronization details before making system changes.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge in the installed-app list.
- Open the app’s menu and choose Modify.
- Choose Repair and allow Windows to complete the operation.
- Restart Windows, open Edge, and reproduce the action that previously triggered the crash.
Repair is different from clearing browsing data: it works on the Edge installation while the cache procedure removes temporary browser files. If Repair is unavailable, fails, or Edge still crashes afterward, record the result and proceed to diagnostics instead of assuming that the unrecognized code has been decoded.

An installation or update failure needs a separate checklist because Edge may not be fully installed or may be unable to replace its existing files. Work through each item that fits your computer:
Administrator permissions
Check that the account or process attempting the installation has the administrator permissions Windows requires. A restricted account can prevent the installer from writing to protected locations. If you cannot change permissions, ask the device administrator to perform the update.
Windows Update status
Check Windows Update and complete any pending restart before trying Edge again. An unfinished Windows update can leave system components in an intermediate state, so repeating the Edge installer first may produce the same failure.

Network and DNS
Confirm that the computer has a working network connection and that DNS resolution is functioning. An installer that cannot reach its download or update service may appear to fail with a browser-related message even though the local Edge files are intact.

Date and time
Verify the computer’s date, time, and time zone. Incorrect clock settings can interfere with secure connections used to retrieve installation files. Correct the clock, restart the update attempt, and note whether the result changes.
Available storage
Check the drive that holds Windows and Edge for sufficient free space. An update can download successfully and still fail while unpacking or replacing files if storage runs out.
Compatibility
Confirm that the Edge build and installer are compatible with your Windows edition and architecture. If the problem began after a system change, record the Windows version and the Edge version shown in Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge, when that screen is available.
Firewall or antivirus interference
Review security software and firewall logs for blocked Edge update activity. Keep third-party security software current, and use its documented, temporary troubleshooting controls only if your organization’s policy permits it. Do not leave protective features disabled as a permanent workaround.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOld installation files
Failed updates can leave old installation files behind. If the update repair path does not work, use Microsoft’s official Edge download page to reinstall Edge. Reinstalling is the escalation step for an installation or update failure, not the first response to a page-specific crash.

Find the Edge crash identifier
In the Edge address bar, open edge://crashes. Record the newest crash ID and the date and time associated with it. If Edge closes too quickly to open this page, note that limitation and continue with Event Viewer.
Export the Windows Application Error event
- Open Windows Event Viewer.
- Locate the Application Error entries around the time of the crash.
- Identify entries whose source is Application Error.
- Confirm that the faulting application is
msedge.exe. - Export the relevant event and keep the newest crash ID from
edge://crasheswith it.
The matching event and crash ID give support a time, process name, and Windows-level record to compare. Capture more than one event only when it represents a separate occurrence; a long, unfiltered export can hide the newest failure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use the symptom, access, and scope to decide what comes next
Three observations narrow the next action more reliably than the unconfirmed code:
- Symptom: A launch crash points toward reducing startup load, updating, malware checks, and Repair. A single-page failure makes cache and extension checks more relevant. An installer failure calls for the permissions, network, storage, compatibility, and security checklist.
- Access: If Edge reaches Settings, you can update it, clear selected data, and open
edge://crashes. If it cannot stay open, use Windows-level Repair and Event Viewer first. - Scope: Record whether the failure affects one action in Edge or the entire browser on the device. A page-specific failure and a browser-wide launch failure should not be treated as the same defect.
This decision framework also tells you when to stop repeating a step. For example, clearing cache again is unlikely to resolve an installer that never completes, while reinstalling is unnecessary for a single tab that works after removing an unneeded extension.
What the code does—and does not—tell you
No authoritative Microsoft support or Learn page identified in this guide assigns a documented meaning to 08007007e. That does not prove the dialog is harmless, nor does it prove malware, a damaged profile, or a defective Windows installation. It means there is no verified code-specific remedy to substitute for the symptom-based sequence.
Keep the exact text, trigger, Edge version, Windows version, and diagnostic records together. If Microsoft later identifies the code or your organization’s support team recognizes it, those details let you connect the new interpretation to the actual crash instead of relying on a copied or incomplete number.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that add CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache files, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
