An AWS Aurora connection timeout is usually a network-reachability failure, not a bad password. First verify that the intended Aurora endpoint resolves and that its TCP port is reachable from the actual client. Then check security groups, routes, subnet network ACLs, cross-VPC paths, cluster availability, and—if you use RDS Proxy—target health and connection-pool limits. Only after TCP succeeds should you troubleshoot credentials, database names, TLS, or driver settings.
What an Aurora connection timeout means
A client connects to Aurora in layers. DNS must resolve the hostname, packets must travel from the client subnet to the database or proxy subnet, security controls must allow the traffic in both directions, and an available listener must accept the connection. After that transport connection is established, the database negotiates TLS and authentication, selects the requested database, and the application driver applies its own settings.

A timeout before a TCP connection is established normally points to the first layers: the wrong endpoint or port, a route or peering problem, a security group or network ACL rule, a host firewall, or an unavailable target. A successful TCP probe changes the investigation. It proves reachability to that host and port only; it does not prove that the username, password, database name, TLS policy, IAM token, Secrets Manager secret, or application-driver configuration is correct.

Use this triage order
- Confirm the intended Aurora cluster, engine, endpoint type, hostname, and port.
- From the real client location, resolve the hostname and run a TCP test.
- Check security-group rules for the client-to-database path and return traffic.
- Compare route tables, subnet placement, network ACLs, and any peering, Transit Gateway, VPN, or Direct Connect path.
- Confirm that the Aurora cluster and selected instance are available and healthy.
- If an RDS Proxy is involved, inspect proxy target health, Secrets Manager or IAM settings, TLS requirements, and pool capacity.
- When TCP works, investigate authentication, database selection, TLS, and driver behavior separately.
1. Confirm the endpoint, engine, and port
Choose the endpoint that matches the workload
In the Aurora console, open the cluster and copy the endpoint for the resource you actually intend to use. The cluster or writer endpoint is for operations that must reach the current writer. The reader endpoint distributes read traffic among reader instances. An instance endpoint targets one specific instance, while an RDS Proxy endpoint targets the proxy rather than the database instance. Using a reader endpoint for a write, an old instance endpoint after a failover, or a proxy hostname when the application is configured for direct access can produce confusing failures.
Check the engine and port in the same place. Do not assume that a copied hostname belongs to the same cluster as the credentials or security-group rules you are checking. Record the endpoint, resolved address, port, cluster identifier, and whether the client is connecting directly or through a proxy before changing anything.
Check DNS from the application environment
Resolve the name from the machine, container, task, function environment, or other network location that is timing out—not from a laptop on a different network. A local workstation can resolve a private name through a corporate resolver while an EC2 instance, ECS task, or Lambda function uses different VPC DNS settings. A name that does not resolve, resolves to an unexpected address, or resolves differently between subnets requires DNS and VPC investigation before database troubleshooting.
2. Prove or disprove TCP reachability
Run a port test from the real client
Use the Aurora hostname and the confirmed port:
nc -zv <aurora-endpoint> <port>
For example, substitute 3306 for a standard Aurora MySQL-compatible port or 5432 for a standard Aurora PostgreSQL-compatible port only when the cluster configuration confirms those values. AWS documents netcat or Telnet as connection tests and notes that Amazon RDS does not accept ICMP traffic, including ping. A failed ping therefore does not establish that Aurora is unreachable; a TCP test is the useful first check.
Interpret the result correctly
- TCP connection succeeds: DNS, routing, and transport to that host and port work from that location. Move to TLS, credentials, database name, IAM or secret configuration, and driver settings.
- The test times out: investigate the endpoint and port, source subnet, routes, security groups, network ACLs, firewalls, and target availability.
- The test is refused: the address is reachable but nothing is accepting the connection on that port, or an intermediate device is actively rejecting it. Confirm the port, selected endpoint, instance state, and proxy target.
- Name resolution fails: inspect VPC DNS support and host-specific resolver configuration before checking database credentials.
Run the same command from each relevant network location when behavior differs between an office, an EC2 instance, an ECS task, a Lambda function, or two subnets. Keep the exact output and timestamp; it helps correlate the test with failovers, maintenance, or security-rule changes.

3. Correct the security groups
Direct Aurora connections
For a direct connection, the security group attached to the Aurora instance or cluster must allow inbound TCP from the real application source on the engine port. Referencing the application security group is usually narrower than allowing a broad CIDR when both resources are in the same VPC. For a controlled external or on-premises source, use the smallest CIDR that actually contains the client addresses.
Verify outbound rules on the client-side security group and any host, container, corporate, or egress firewall. Stateful security groups allow response traffic for an accepted flow, but a restrictive outbound policy can still prevent the client from initiating or completing the connection. Do not add 0.0.0.0/0 merely because a connection timed out; broad exposure creates a security problem and can hide the real source-address mistake.
RDS Proxy connections
When the application uses RDS Proxy, there are two network legs: client to proxy and proxy to Aurora. The proxy security group must permit the application source to reach the proxy listener, and it must permit the proxy to reach the database on the engine port. AWS notes that a security group can be reused only when resources in that group are explicitly allowed to communicate; attaching the same group to both resources does not automatically authorize every flow.
Check which security group is attached to the proxy, which is attached to each Aurora instance, and whether the rules reference the correct groups rather than a similarly named group in another VPC. A direct connection test to the database endpoint does not validate the proxy path, and a successful proxy port test does not prove that the proxy can reach a healthy database target.
4. Verify routes, subnets, and network ACLs
Compare route tables on every involved subnet
Inspect the route table associated with the client subnet and the route tables associated with the Aurora and proxy subnets. For private designs, confirm the route through the intended VPC path. For cross-VPC access, verify the relevant VPC peering or Transit Gateway attachment and propagation. For on-premises clients, verify the VPN or Direct Connect route in both directions. A route that exists only on the client side is not enough; return traffic needs a valid path as well.

If the design intentionally exposes a database path publicly, AWS requires an internet gateway and a 0.0.0.0/0 route to it for internet access. Public accessibility does not override security groups, network ACLs, or database availability, and it should not be used as a reflexive fix for a private-routing error.

Check network ACLs and ephemeral return ports
Network ACLs apply at the subnet boundary and are stateless. Review ingress and egress rules on every subnet crossed by the flow, including proxy subnets and client subnets. An ACL can allow inbound traffic to the database port while blocking the client’s ephemeral return port, causing a connection attempt to hang. For RDS Proxy across Availability Zones, ensure ACL rules allow the required engine-port egress and corresponding ingress traffic.
Look for path-specific differences
If the connection works in one subnet but times out in another, compare the two locations rather than changing the database blindly. Differences commonly include route-table associations, ACL entries, DNS settings, NAT or internet-gateway paths, source security-group identity, and egress firewall policy. The error-to-action table below provides a compact way to map each symptom to the next check.
5. Confirm Aurora is available
Check cluster and instance state
Open the Aurora cluster and each relevant DB instance and check their status. A newly created instance remains in creating until it is ready; AWS says availability can take up to 20 minutes depending on instance size. A client that starts immediately after provisioning can therefore time out without any network rule being wrong.
Also review recent reboot, maintenance, failover, and parameter-change events. During a failover, the writer endpoint can take time to point to the new writer. An instance endpoint may refer to an instance that is restarting or no longer serves the role your application expects. Confirm that the selected reader or writer endpoint currently has a healthy instance behind it.

Match endpoint role to operation
Use the writer or cluster endpoint for writes and transactions that require the writer. Use the reader endpoint only for read workloads that can tolerate Aurora’s reader-selection behavior. Use an instance endpoint when you deliberately need one instance. If the application should benefit from pooled connections and failover handling, use the configured RDS Proxy endpoint and troubleshoot that path independently.
6. Troubleshoot RDS Proxy timeouts
Inspect proxy and target status
Run these commands with the proxy name used by the application:
aws rds describe-db-proxies --db-proxy-name "$DB_PROXY_NAME"
aws rds describe-db-proxy-target-groups --db-proxy-name "$DB_PROXY_NAME"
aws rds describe-db-proxy-targets --db-proxy-name "$DB_PROXY_NAME"
A target with TargetHealth.State=AVAILABLE indicates that the proxy can connect to the DB instance. If the state is UNAVAILABLE, read both Reason and Description; they distinguish reachability, authentication, and target-state problems. States or reasons such as UNREACHABLE, CONNECTION_FAILED, and AUTH_FAILURE point to different corrective actions, so do not treat every proxy failure as a generic network timeout.
Check connection borrowing and pool capacity
An application can reach the proxy while still timing out waiting for a database connection. This occurs when the proxy has exhausted its available database connections, the target is unavailable, or establishing a new connection takes longer than the configured ConnectionBorrowTimeout. Review that setting, MaxConnectionsPercent, target availability, and connection pinning.
Connection pinning can reduce how effectively the proxy shares backend connections when session state or transaction behavior forces a client to remain associated with one database connection. Examine application usage patterns and pool sizes before simply increasing limits. Raising a timeout can mask an unavailable target or an exhausted pool; it does not create additional database capacity.

Validate proxy network design
The proxy must be deployed in subnets that can reach the Aurora instances, and its security group and subnet ACLs must allow both directions of the proxy-to-database flow. A successful client-to-proxy TCP test proves only the first leg. Test and inspect the proxy target state for the second leg.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Separate authentication, database selection, and TLS errors
Credentials and database name
After TCP succeeds, verify the database username, password, requested database name, and authentication method. A wrong password or nonexistent database should produce an authentication or database-selection error rather than a transport timeout, but connection pools and drivers can obscure the original message. Test with a minimal client using the same endpoint, port, and TLS settings as the application.
Secrets Manager and IAM with RDS Proxy
For a proxy that uses Secrets Manager, confirm that the secret contains credentials for an existing database user and that the proxy role can retrieve the secret. AWS documents failures when the secret does not match a database user. If IAM authentication is enabled, verify the IAM policy, generated token, token lifetime, target user, and clock accuracy on the client. A token or permission error is not fixed by changing a route table.
TLS and hostname validation
If the proxy requires TLS, the client must enable the required SSL/TLS mode; disabling encryption will fail even when the port is reachable. PostgreSQL IAM authentication requires SSL. MySQL clients must use at least the TLS mode required by the proxy configuration. Use the correct Aurora or proxy hostname when certificate validation is enabled; substituting an IP address can make hostname verification fail.
Driver and pool settings
Inspect the driver’s connect timeout, socket timeout, DNS behavior, retry policy, and maximum pool size. Keep application pool limits consistent with Aurora and proxy capacity. A very short client timeout can report failure while Aurora is completing a legitimate failover; an excessively long timeout can exhaust worker threads while the network is broken. Capture the driver’s exact error and phase—DNS, socket connect, TLS handshake, authentication, or database selection—rather than reporting every failure as “Aurora timed out.”
Error-to-action table
| Symptom | Most likely layer | Next action |
|---|---|---|
nc or Telnet times out |
Network path, security group, ACL, route, firewall, wrong endpoint or port, or unavailable target | Confirm DNS result, endpoint, port, source subnet, routes, security groups, ACLs, and cluster state. |
nc succeeds but the client reports a password or authentication error |
Credentials, IAM, or secret mismatch | Verify the user, password, database name, IAM policy and token, and Secrets Manager secret. |
| TLS handshake failure or “proxy requires TLS” | Client/server encryption settings | Enable the required SSL/TLS mode and use the correct hostname for certificate validation. |
RDS Proxy target is UNAVAILABLE |
Proxy-to-database reachability, authentication, or target state | Read TargetHealth.Reason and Description, then fix the indicated layer. |
| “Timed-out waiting to acquire database connection” | Proxy pool exhaustion or an unavailable or slow target | Review maximum connections, ConnectionBorrowTimeout, pinning, and target availability. |
| Works in one subnet but not another | Subnet route, ACL, NAT or internet-gateway path, DNS, or source security-group difference | Compare route tables, ACLs, security groups, DNS settings, and egress paths. |
Direct Aurora endpoint or RDS Proxy?
Both designs can be valid; the right choice depends on workload and operational requirements.
| Decision axis | Direct Aurora endpoint | RDS Proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Network path | Client connects directly to the Aurora instance or cluster endpoint. | Client reaches the proxy, which must also reach Aurora. |
| Connection management | Application pool opens and closes database connections directly. | Proxy pooling can share backend connections, but borrowing limits and pinning require monitoring. |
| Authentication | Database credentials or configured IAM and driver behavior apply directly. | Secrets Manager or IAM, proxy permissions, target-user matching, and client settings all matter. |
| TLS | Configure the client for the Aurora endpoint and its certificate policy. | Meet the proxy’s TLS requirement and validate the proxy hostname. |
| Failover behavior | Use the correct cluster, writer, or reader endpoint and account for failover transitions. | Proxy target health and endpoint behavior add another layer to verify. |
| Observability | Focus on client-to-Aurora transport, instance state, and application pool metrics. | Also inspect target health, borrow timeout, maximum connections, and pinning. |
A proxy is not a substitute for correct VPC routing or security rules. It can make connection management easier for some workloads, but it introduces proxy security groups, target registration, secret or IAM configuration, and additional TLS and capacity checks.

Quick Recap
Prevent the next timeout
- Store the endpoint type, engine, port, VPC, subnets, and security-group ownership in deployment documentation.
- Keep database ingress limited to the application security group or a narrowly controlled source CIDR.
- Test DNS and TCP connectivity from each production subnet, not only from an administrator’s workstation.
- Monitor Aurora instance state, failovers, maintenance, proxy target health, connection utilization, and pool wait time.
- Use separate tests for direct Aurora and RDS Proxy paths so a successful test cannot be mistaken for proof that both paths work.
- Record whether a failure occurs during DNS, socket connection, TLS, authentication, or database selection.
- Review route-table and network-ACL changes alongside security-group changes; either control can break a previously working path.
Manual fix checklist
- Copy the endpoint from the intended Aurora cluster and verify whether it is a writer, reader, instance, or proxy endpoint.
- Confirm the engine and configured port.
- Resolve the hostname from the actual application environment.
- Run
nc -zv <aurora-endpoint> <port>from that environment. - If it times out, compare source and destination subnets, route tables, peering or Transit Gateway paths, VPN or Direct Connect routes, ACLs, security groups, and firewalls.
- Check cluster and instance status, creation progress, failover, and maintenance events.
- For RDS Proxy, inspect the three AWS CLI target commands, target-health reason, connection-borrow timeout, maximum connections, pinning, secrets, IAM, and TLS.
- If TCP succeeds, test credentials, database name, TLS, IAM, secret contents, and driver or pool settings with a minimal client.
