How to Fix an ASUS Laptop That Runs Slowly After a Windows Update

If your ASUS laptop slows down after Windows Update, first check whether the update is still downloading or installing, then restart if Windows requests it. The timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem: background activity, power settings, heat, low storage, or a driver issue can also affect performance. Work through the checks below before considering recovery or a reset.

1. Check whether Windows is still working on the update

Open Windows Update in Settings and check its status. If an update is downloading or installing, let it finish before trying more disruptive fixes. If Windows says a restart is required, restart now or schedule it. ASUS recommends completing pending update work before troubleshooting a slow system; it does not prescribe a fixed waiting period. See ASUS’s Windows 10/11 slow-system troubleshooting guidance.

2. Reduce variables and check model-specific updates

Disconnect nonessential peripherals temporarily and see whether performance changes. Check that Windows packages, drivers, and BIOS are current using support resources for your exact ASUS model. MyASUS System Update may provide a route on supported models. Do not treat a BIOS update as a routine first fix: applicability and instructions depend on the model, so follow its support page.

3. Check power mode, heat, and hardware

Connect the AC adapter and review performance settings

Connect the AC adapter while checking performance, since ASUS notes that adapter connection may affect it. If your model exposes performance controls in MyASUS, inspect Device Settings and choose an appropriate mode. Feature availability varies; some ROG and TUF devices may use Armoury Crate instead.

Check for heat or hardware problems

High device temperature can reduce performance. If the laptop is unusually hot, use ASUS guidance for your specific model rather than assuming a particular accessory will solve the issue. Run MyASUS System Diagnosis if the feature is available on your device. These model-dependent checks are covered in ASUS’s slow-system FAQ.

4. Find background activity and check storage

Inspect what is using system resources

Use Task Manager to see whether Windows, an antivirus scan, another program, or a download or file-sharing app is using significant resources. Close applications you do not need. Check Windows Update status before treating high activity as a persistent fault; update work can account for temporary load.

Review temporary files and available space

ASUS notes that limited space on the system disk can affect performance and functionality. Open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, review the categories, and select only files you understand and intend to remove. Do not assume every listed category is safe to delete for your situation.

5. Consider a rollback only when the timing fits

Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists

If the slowdown began recently and a restore point from before it exists, System Restore may help. ASUS says it preserves personal files but removes apps, drivers, and updates installed after the chosen restore point. In the restore workflow, select Scan for affected programs and review the results before proceeding. Keep the laptop connected to AC power and do not force it off while restoration runs. See ASUS’s System Restore Point instructions.

Uninstall an update or driver only with evidence

ASUS lists uninstalling apps, Windows updates, or drivers among recovery options for problems following a recent update. That is a conditional rollback, not a reason to remove the latest update whenever the laptop feels slow. Identify the update or driver that coincides with the slowdown, then consult the relevant Windows and ASUS instructions before removing it. ASUS outlines the options in its Windows recovery guidance.

6. Reset the PC only after other steps fail

Resetting changes the system more broadly, so leave it until the preceding checks and recovery options have not resolved the issue. Back up personal files before resetting, then follow current Windows and ASUS instructions. ASUS advises backing up but does not require a particular destination; an external drive is one possible choice. If the slowdown continues after these steps, contact ASUS support with your laptop model, Windows version, update details, and observed symptoms.
