How to Fix an Arlo Video Doorbell 2K That Won’t Ring Your Indoor Chime

If an Arlo Video Doorbell 2K sends alerts to your phone but produces no sound indoors, first determine whether it is a wire-free installation using an Arlo Chime or a wired installation using your home’s existing chime. Wire-free models need a powered, network-connected chime that is paired in Arlo Secure and must not be in Silent Mode. Wired models need a correctly connected Arlo Power Kit, a non-bypassed chime circuit, the correct Traditional Chime setting, and a 16–24V AC transformer.

Work through only the section that matches your installation. Turn off the breaker before opening any wired chime enclosure; use an electrician if you cannot safely identify or measure the low-voltage wiring.

Identify which chime system you have

The 2K doorbell can be installed in two fundamentally different ways. A wire-free doorbell does not drive a conventional wall chime directly; it triggers a separately powered Arlo Chime or Chime 2 over your network. A wired doorbell uses the home’s low-voltage chime circuit through an Arlo Power Kit.

Installation Indoor sound comes from What must be working Transformer/Power Kit
Wire-free 2K Arlo Chime 2 (AC2001) or compatible Arlo Chime (AC1001) Chime power, internet, doorbell-to-chime pairing, and Silent Mode off Not used for the indoor chime
Wired 2K Your existing mechanical or digital chime Power Kit wiring, correct chime type in Arlo Secure, suitable transformer, and normal (non-bypass) operation Required; Arlo specifies 16–24V AC for the wired path
Wired with bypass enabled No existing physical chime The bypass circuit and app setting intentionally disable the original chime Power Kit remains installed, but the chime is electrically disconnected

If you hear the doorbell on your phone but not indoors, the camera, account, and push-notification path are usually functioning. Concentrate on the chime’s pairing, power, wiring, settings, and compatibility.

Fix a wire-free Arlo Chime or Chime 2

1. Confirm the chime is paired with the doorbell

  1. Open the Arlo Secure app.
  2. Select the indoor Chime or Chime 2 device.
  3. Open its paired-device list and look for the Video Doorbell 2K.
  4. If the doorbell is absent, use the app’s add or pairing flow to associate it with the chime, then press the doorbell once to test.

Arlo states that Chime 2 must be paired with a doorbell before a press can trigger it. A chime that appears in your account but has no doorbell under Paired Devices will remain silent even though the camera itself works.

2. Check power and the home internet connection

  • Verify that the Chime or Chime 2 is firmly plugged into a live outlet and that any outlet switch is on.
  • Look for the normal status indication on the chime and move it temporarily to another known-good outlet if necessary.
  • Confirm that the home router is online and that the doorbell and chime can reach the same Arlo service account. A phone connected to mobile data can still receive a camera alert while the indoor chime has lost its internet connection.
  • Restart the chime by unplugging it briefly, reconnecting it, and waiting for it to reconnect before testing.

Arlo identifies loss of power and internet connectivity as causes of a silent Chime 2. Resolve those conditions before changing doorbell settings.

3. Turn off Silent Mode

  1. In Arlo Secure, open the Video Doorbell 2K.
  2. Open the doorbell’s sound or notification settings.
  3. Disable Silent Mode.
  4. Press the doorbell and wait for the chime to respond.

Silent Mode suppresses the indoor chime by design. It can be enabled accidentally when changing notification preferences, so check it even if the chime worked previously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify the accessory is the supported model

For a wire-free 2K or HD doorbell, Arlo documents the Arlo Chime 2 (model AC2001) and the compatible Arlo Chime (model AC1001) as the supported chime path. If your original wired chime is missing, incompatible, or cannot be used, Chime 2 is the direct replacement-style solution. Pair it in Arlo Secure rather than expecting the 2K doorbell to operate an unrelated wireless chime.

5. Test after each change

Press the physical doorbell once after pairing, restoring power, and disabling Silent Mode. If the phone alert arrives but the chime still does not, remove and re-add the chime in Arlo Secure according to the app’s current setup flow. App menu names and accessory availability can vary by app version and region.

Fix a wired Arlo Video Doorbell 2K and existing chime

Safety before opening the enclosure

Switch off the relevant circuit at the breaker before removing a chime cover or touching Power Kit wires. The doorbell side is low voltage, but the chime enclosure and transformer installation can involve mains wiring. If the breaker is not clearly identified, the wiring is damaged, or you are unsure how to test AC voltage, stop and have an electrician perform the inspection.

1. Inspect the Arlo Power Kit connections

  1. With power off, remove the existing chime cover.
  2. Check that both Power Kit wires are still secured to the intended chime terminals and that no conductor was pulled loose.
  3. Look for a wire trapped by the cover or displaced when the cover was reinstalled.
  4. Replace the cover, restore power, and test only after all connections are secure.

Arlo notes that a Power Kit wire can become disconnected when the chime cover is replaced. A loose connection can leave the doorbell online while preventing the physical chime from operating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Make sure bypass mode is not enabled

Locate the bypass switch on the Power Kit. The normal, non-bypass position keeps the existing chime in the circuit. Bypass mode electrically disconnects that chime, so the existing unit will not ring when someone presses the wired doorbell.

If bypass was selected accidentally, turn off the breaker, return the switch to its normal position, close the enclosure, restore power, and then check the app’s Traditional Chime setting. Do not use bypass as a general fix for a silent chime; it is intended for specific electrical or compatibility problems.

3. Select the installed chime type in Arlo Secure

  1. Open the wired doorbell in Arlo Secure.
  2. Go to Chime Settings.
  3. Open Traditional Chime.
  4. Select Mechanical for a conventional bell-and-coil unit or Digital for an electronic melody chime.
  5. Do not select Neither or None when you expect the existing physical chime to sound.

The selected type must match the hardware. A digital chime configured as mechanical, or a mechanical unit configured as digital, may fail to ring or behave abnormally. Menu wording can differ slightly between Arlo Secure versions.

4. Verify transformer voltage and available power

Arlo’s wired guidance specifies a 16–24V AC transformer. A transformer outside that range, or one that cannot supply enough power for the doorbell and chime together, can produce a silent or unreliable chime. Do not replace it based only on its label or on a guess about your home’s wiring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An AC-capable multimeter can measure the low-voltage output, but measuring at a doorbell transformer still requires safe access and correct meter settings. If you have not performed this type of test before, ask an electrician to verify both output voltage and available power. A correct voltage reading alone does not prove that every connection or load is suitable.

5. Check for an overheating warning

Open the doorbell’s device status in Arlo Secure and look for an overheating or excessive-temperature warning. Arlo’s second-generation manual lists excessive doorbell temperature as a possible reason an existing chime does not ring. Allow the unit to return to a normal temperature and investigate direct sun exposure, an enclosed mounting location, or an electrical problem before repeatedly testing it.

Understand bypass mode before changing it

Bypass mode is deliberate, not a mute setting. Arlo recommends it for symptoms such as unexpected chime buzzing or ringing, an amber setup LED, or an existing chime rated below the upgraded transformer voltage. Moving the Power Kit switch to bypass disconnects the existing chime from the circuit.

When bypass is enabled, Arlo instructs users to set Traditional Chime to Neither or None in Arlo Secure. That combination tells the doorbell not to operate the disconnected physical chime. If you want an audible alert after bypassing, install an Arlo Chime or replace the old chime with a model compatible with the transformer. Simply changing the app setting while leaving the old chime disconnected cannot make that chime ring.

Choose the right remedy

Symptom or installation condition Most appropriate action What it changes
Wire-free doorbell, no indoor chime installed Install and pair Arlo Chime 2 (AC2001), or the compatible Arlo Chime (AC1001) Adds a separately powered network chime
Wire-free chime listed but silent Check pairing, outlet power, internet, and Silent Mode Restores the trigger path without rewiring the doorbell
Wired chime stopped after a cover was replaced Turn off the breaker and inspect Power Kit wires Restores a potentially disconnected low-voltage connection
Wired chime is intentionally bypassed Keep bypass and use an Arlo Chime, or return to a compatible traditional chime installation Either preserves the bypass or restores a physical chime
Measured transformer output is outside 16–24V AC or power is inadequate Have the transformer and circuit evaluated; replace only with a suitable unit Provides the electrical conditions required by the wired doorbell path
Wiring or mains-side work is uncertain Use a qualified electrician Prevents unsafe troubleshooting and incorrect transformer work

Use the symptom to narrow the fault

The phone receives an alert, but a wire-free chime is silent

Open the chime’s paired-device list first. If the doorbell is missing, pairing is the fault. If it is listed, check the chime outlet and router, then disable Silent Mode. This sequence separates account configuration from power and network causes without changing wired settings that do not apply.

The phone receives an alert, but a wired chime is silent

Check the app’s Traditional Chime selection, then inspect the Power Kit bypass switch and wiring with the breaker off. If those are correct, verify the 16–24V AC transformer requirement and look for a temperature warning.

The chime buzzes, rings unexpectedly, or shows an amber setup LED

Those are conditions for which Arlo recommends considering bypass mode. Because bypass deliberately disables the existing chime, plan to use an Arlo Chime or a compatible replacement if you still need an indoor audible alert.

The chime worked until the transformer or doorbell was upgraded

Recheck the existing chime’s voltage rating and the installed transformer output. A chime that was suitable for the old arrangement may not be suitable for the upgraded voltage. Do not bypass or replace parts until the actual AC voltage and wiring are verified.

When professional help is the safest fix

  • You cannot identify the correct breaker or find the transformer.
  • The chime enclosure contains exposed mains conductors or damaged insulation.
  • A meter reading is unstable, outside the specified range, or impossible to obtain safely.
  • The doorbell repeatedly reports overheating after normal cooling.
  • The Power Kit, transformer, or chime has scorched terminals, loose conductors, or signs of water intrusion.
  • The installation requires changing mains wiring rather than simply checking the low-voltage doorbell circuit.

Provide the electrician with the doorbell model, the existing chime type, the Power Kit installation, and any measured AC voltage. That information helps distinguish a configuration error from an electrical-capacity problem.

Final verification checklist

  1. Identify whether the installation is wire-free or wired.
  2. For wire-free systems, confirm a supported Arlo Chime is powered, online, paired under Paired Devices, and not muted by Silent Mode.
  3. For wired systems, confirm the Power Kit wires are secure, bypass is off unless intentionally used, and Traditional Chime matches the mechanical or digital hardware.
  4. Verify the wired transformer is within Arlo’s 16–24V AC guidance rather than assuming its rating.
  5. Check Arlo Secure for an overheating warning.
  6. Press the doorbell once after each correction and observe both the phone alert and the indoor sound.
