If your Android phone charges but does not appear in Windows, start with the USB connection itself: unlock the phone, open its USB charging notification, and choose File Transfer. Charging only proves that the phone and cable are supplying power; it does not prove that a data connection is active. If that does not work, use a different data-capable cable, restart and update both devices, and cross-test the phone and each Windows USB port.
The steps below cover USB file transfer—browsing the phone and copying files in Windows. Bluetooth, Phone Link pairing, USB tethering and manufacturer-specific connection utilities are different workflows and can fail for different reasons.

First identify what “won’t connect” means
“Windows doesn’t recognize my Android phone” can describe several different goals. This guide addresses the common case where you connect a phone by USB to transfer photos, videos or other files. Google’s official instructions for that task require an unlocked Android device and the USB mode named File Transfer.
A phone that is charging is not necessarily connected for data. The cable may carry power only, the phone may still be in its charging-only USB mode, or either USB port may be unable to exchange data. Treat those as separate checks rather than assuming that one symptom identifies the cause.

Before you start: a two-minute checklist
Have the phone, the Windows computer, a USB cable and, if possible, a second compatible cable available. Keep the phone’s screen unlocked while testing. Note whether Windows makes any connection response, whether the phone shows a USB charging notification, and whether the problem occurs on every port or only one. These observations make each test useful instead of turning the process into repeated unplugging and reconnecting.
Do not begin by downloading a driver utility or changing an unverified setting. The supported sequence is simpler: select the right USB mode, verify the cable can carry data, restart and update the devices, and then test each side of the connection separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe supported USB file-transfer procedure
Use this sequence before changing anything else. It is the complete path Google gives for moving files between an Android phone and a Windows computer.
- Unlock the phone. Keep the screen unlocked while you establish the connection. A locked device may not expose its file-transfer controls.
- Connect the phone with a USB cable. Use a cable that is compatible with both the phone and the computer. If you are unsure whether the cable carries data, plan to test another one.
- Open the phone’s USB charging notification. The notification may be worded “Charging this device via USB” or something similar. Wording can vary by device and Android version, so look for the notification describing the current USB connection or charging state.
- Choose “File Transfer” under “Use USB for.” Selecting this mode changes the connection from charging to data access. Do not treat the appearance of a charging icon as confirmation that this choice was made.
- Look at Windows. A file-transfer window should open on the computer. You can then drag files between the phone and Windows in that window.
If Windows does not react immediately, wait briefly after selecting File Transfer before changing another variable. Then repeat the same sequence once, making sure the phone is still unlocked and that the notification actually shows the selected mode.
When you finish copying, eject the phone from Windows before disconnecting the cable. Ejecting gives Windows a chance to finish pending file operations and is the final step in Google’s procedure.
Phone charges but does not show up on the PC
This symptom narrows the first checks but does not identify a single fault. Power can travel through a cable even when data cannot, and Android can remain in a charging-only mode while the battery continues to fill.

Unlock the phone, connect it, and open the USB charging notification. If File Transfer is not selected under Use USB for, select it and wait for Windows to react. If the notification is not visible, look through the phone’s current notifications for the USB charging entry; the exact wording is not identical on every device.
Do not substitute another option simply because it sounds similar. The relevant choice for browsing folders and copying files is File Transfer. Charging, tethering and other USB purposes are separate modes and do not establish the file-transfer connection this guide describes.

Replace the cable with a data-capable one
Google Android Help states: Not all USB cables can transfer files.
A cable that only supplies power will produce the exact “charges but no files” symptom. Try another cable that is confirmed to support data and that fits both ports. A cable can also be faulty even if it previously charged the phone.
Do not infer data capability from appearance, length or charging speed. The relevant test is whether a different, compatible cable lets Windows see the phone after you select File Transfer. Keep the original cable out of the diagnosis until this comparison is complete.

No brand or connector shape can be recommended without knowing those models. A cable that fits physically can still be unsuitable for data, so retain the packaging or specification details until the connection has been tested.
A methodical troubleshooting sequence
If the correct USB mode and a suitable cable do not produce a file window, work through these checks in order. Change one variable at a time so you know which test changes the result.
1. Restart the computer
Restart Windows normally, wait for it to finish starting, then connect the unlocked phone again and select File Transfer. A restart clears a temporary detection problem without changing your phone’s files or transfer settings.
2. Update Android
Google recommends updating Android as part of this troubleshooting sequence. Install any update offered by the phone’s normal system-update screen, allow the device to complete its restart if required, and repeat the USB procedure. Android menu names differ by version, so use the update control provided on your phone rather than following a Windows-specific path.

After the computer has restarted and Android is current, restart the phone itself. Once it is back at the unlocked home screen, reconnect the cable and explicitly choose File Transfer. This separates a transient phone-side problem from a cable or port problem.
4. Test another cable
Use a second cable that is known to carry data and is compatible with the phone and PC. Repeat the same controlled sequence: unlock the phone, connect it, open the USB charging notification, choose File Transfer, and watch Windows for a file window.
If the second cable works, the first cable was unsuitable or defective. Replace it with a cable whose specifications confirm data transfer; the phone model and computer ports determine what physical fit is required, so do not buy on connector appearance alone.

5. Isolate the phone’s USB port
Connect the phone to another computer using the cable that you are testing. This is a cross-test, not a permanent workaround. If the phone can be set to File Transfer and appears on the other computer, the original Windows computer or its port needs attention. If it fails there as well, continue treating the phone, its cable and its USB mode as the active variables.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the same cable and the same USB mode during this comparison whenever possible. Changing the computer, cable and phone setting simultaneously makes a successful result impossible to interpret.
6. Isolate the Windows computer’s port
Connect a different USB device to the Windows port you used. If that second device is also not detected, the port is a likely part of the problem and another available port should be tested. If the other device works, repeat the phone test with the known data-capable cable and the phone set to File Transfer.
Testing another device is useful even when the phone worked on a different computer. It tells you whether the original port can detect any USB hardware, rather than asking the phone to prove two things at once.
7. Check Windows hardware-detection settings
Google advises checking the computer’s settings to make sure Windows is configured to automatically detect new hardware. Use the Windows settings available on your installation and confirm that automatic detection has not been disabled. The official USB-transfer guidance does not establish a particular Windows version, Device Manager status, driver package or menu path, so avoid applying a model-specific driver recipe without documentation for your exact system.
Use the cross-tests to identify the failing side
Record what happens in each test instead of repeating the same connection several times. Include the cable used, the computer or port used, whether the USB notification appeared, which mode you selected and whether a file window opened. The table turns the official troubleshooting advice into a simple isolation plan.
| Test | What to do | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| USB mode | Unlock the phone and select File Transfer in the USB charging notification. | If Windows then opens a file window, the phone was still in a charging-only mode. |
| Cable comparison | Repeat the transfer procedure with another compatible, data-capable cable. | If only the second cable works, the first cable cannot transfer data or is faulty. |
| Phone cross-test | Connect the phone to another computer. | Working elsewhere points attention to the original Windows computer or its port; failing everywhere keeps the phone, cable and mode in scope. |
| Windows-port cross-test | Connect a different USB device to the original computer port. | If the other device also fails, try another Windows USB port and check hardware-detection settings. |
| Restart and update | Restart Windows and the phone, update Android, then repeat the controlled transfer steps. | A change after these steps indicates a temporary state or software-version issue, but it does not identify a particular driver or Windows edition. |
Choose the next action by symptom
No USB notification appears on the phone
Keep the phone unlocked and reconnect it. If the notification still does not appear, try the known data-capable cable and another computer. Without the USB notification, you cannot select File Transfer, so the cable and port cross-tests become the most useful next checks.
The notification appears, but File Transfer is not selected
Open the USB charging notification and choose File Transfer under Use USB for. Charging is a separate mode. After selecting it, give Windows a moment to open the file-transfer window before changing cables or ports.
File Transfer is selected, but Windows opens nothing
Restart both devices, update Android, and repeat the selection. Then run the cable, phone-computer and Windows-port cross-tests. These checks distinguish a mode-selection problem from a data-path or computer-detection problem without assuming a particular driver failure.

The connection works briefly and then disappears
Repeat the transfer with another compatible data cable and another Windows port. If the behavior follows the cable, replace it; if it follows one computer port, use a different port and check Windows’ automatic hardware-detection setting. Keep the phone unlocked while establishing the connection and select File Transfer each time.
Windows sees the phone on one computer but not another
Keep the phone, cable and File Transfer selection constant while comparing the computers. A successful result on one computer shifts attention to the original Windows computer or its USB port. Test another device on that port and review the computer’s automatic hardware-detection setting before changing anything on the phone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Android version and device differences matter
Android instructions can vary by version and manufacturer. Google notes that some steps on its support page apply only to Android 14 and later, and the USB notification text can differ between devices. Treat “Charging this device via USB” as an example of the notification rather than a guaranteed label.
Before seeking model-specific help, write down the phone model, Android version, Windows version and exact symptom: no notification, charging only, File Transfer selected with no Windows window, or an intermittent connection. Those details prevent a generic USB-file-transfer procedure from being mistaken for a Phone Link, Bluetooth or tethering fix.

When USB transfer remains unavailable
Google’s Android Help page lists two alternative ways to move files when a USB connection is not practical: accessing files through a Google Account and using Quick Share for Windows. These routes have their own setup and compatibility requirements, so follow the current instructions shown for your account, phone and Windows installation rather than assuming that a USB setting applies to them.
An alternative transfer route is useful when cross-testing shows that the phone or Windows port is the obstacle, or when you need to move a small set of files before replacing a cable. It does not repair the USB connection; keep the cable and port results recorded if you still need a permanent fix.
Finish every transfer safely
After copying is complete, close any file operation still in progress and eject the phone from Windows. Only then unplug the USB cable. This order reduces the chance of interrupting a transfer that Windows has not finished writing.
What this guide does not establish
The official guidance supports the basic Android-to-Windows USB file-transfer workflow and the initial checks above. It does not establish a particular Device Manager status, a downloadable driver package, a Windows-version-specific settings path, a Samsung- or Pixel-specific menu, or a third-party repair utility. Those details can vary by phone, Android release and Windows build.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Android phone charge but not appear in Windows?
Charging does not prove that the cable carries data or that Android is in a data mode. Unlock the phone, open the USB charging notification and select File Transfer. If it still does not appear, try a known data-capable cable and cross-test the phone and Windows port.
How do I transfer files from Android to Windows?
Connect the unlocked phone, open the USB charging notification, choose File Transfer under Use USB for, and wait for a file-transfer window in Windows. Drag the files you need, then eject the phone before unplugging it.
What if the USB charging notification is missing?
Reconnect the unlocked phone with a cable known to support data. Then test the phone on another computer. Without the notification, you cannot select File Transfer, so cable and port comparisons are the most useful next steps.
Can any USB cable transfer files?
No. Google Android Help states that not all USB cables can transfer files. Use a compatible cable whose specifications explicitly support data transfer; a power-only or faulty cable can still charge the phone.
Should I restart both devices?
Yes. Google recommends restarting the computer and phone and updating Android as part of the initial troubleshooting sequence. After each restart, reconnect the unlocked phone and select File Transfer again.
How can I tell whether the phone port or Windows port is faulty?
Connect the phone to another computer using the same data-capable cable. Then connect a different USB device to the original Windows port. These two cross-tests show whether the problem follows the phone or cable, or stays with the computer or port.
What should I do if File Transfer is selected but Windows still shows nothing?
Restart Windows and the phone, update Android, repeat the USB mode selection, then test another cable, another computer and another Windows USB port. Do not assume a specific driver problem without documentation for your exact phone and Windows version.
Are Quick Share and Google Account access fixes for USB?
They are alternative ways Google lists for moving files when USB is not practical. They do not repair the cable or port, and each has its own setup and compatibility requirements.
The Bottom Line
For an Android phone that will not connect to Windows for file transfer, unlock it and select File Transfer in the USB charging notification. If charging continues without a file window, try a confirmed data cable, restart and update both devices, and cross-test the phone, another computer and each Windows USB port. Eject the phone before unplugging. If USB remains unavailable, Google points to Google Account access and Quick Share for Windows as alternative transfer routes.
