How to Fix an All-in-One Printer That Won’t Print

Start at the printer, not the computer: read its display or light pattern, check paper, covers and jams, then run the printer’s own test page. If that page prints, the hardware can produce output and you should troubleshoot the connection, selected printer, queue or driver. If the built-in test also fails, follow the model-specific paper-path, supply, maintenance or service instructions instead.

Use the symptom to choose the right troubleshooting branch

“Won’t print” can describe several different failures. A job that never leaves the computer is usually a status, connection, queue or driver problem. A sheet that feeds out blank is a different branch involving the document, ink or toner, printhead and print settings. A printer that reports a jam, open cover or supply warning is already telling you where to begin.

1. Read the printer’s message before resetting it

Write down the exact model number and every message, icon or light pattern shown on the control panel. A code that disappears after a restart can still be useful when you contact support. Also check any notification on the computer; it may say that the printer is offline, paused, unavailable or out of paper.

Amazon Basics USB 2.0 Cable, USB-A to USB-B, for Printer or External Hard Drive, Connect to Computer/Laptop/PC, 480 Mbps Transfer Speed, Gold-Plated Connectors, 6 Foot, Black
  • IN THE BOX: (1) 6-foot high-speed multi-shielded USB 2.0 A-Male to B-Male cable
  • DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Connects mice, keyboards, and speed-critical devices, such as external hard drives, printers, and cameras to a computer
  • ULTRA FAST SPEED: Full 2.0 USB capability with 480 Mbps transfer speed
  • DURABLE DESIGN: Corrosion-resistant, gold-plated connectors for optimal signal clarity and shielding to minimize interference

Do not treat an error such as “cover open,” “paper jam” or “replace cartridge” as a generic communication failure. Follow the model’s documented procedure for that condition. For example, HP’s guidance says a detected paper jam can stop printing and directs users to open the appropriate access doors, remove paper carefully, close the doors and restart the printer. Use that as a model-specific example, not as a universal procedure for every all-in-one.

Manufacturer instructions differ for rear-feed paper paths, automatic document feeders, duplexers, carriages and printheads. If a message names one of those parts, use the manual for your exact model rather than pulling on a carriage or forcing a roller.

2. Check power, paper, covers and the paper path

Confirm normal power

  • Make sure the printer is actually on, not merely showing a sleep indicator.
  • Check that its power cord is firmly seated at the printer and wall outlet or surge protector.
  • If the display is frozen, finish the physical checks below before restarting so a pending jam is not hidden by the reboot.

Load paper correctly

Use the size and type selected in the tray guides. Fan a stack that has stuck together, keep it below the tray’s fill mark and slide the guides against—but not into—the paper. An incorrect size setting can make a printer wait for media that is not present or reject a job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect covers and trays

Close every access cover, cartridge door, rear door and output-tray extension required by the model. A cover that looks closed but does not engage its sensor can leave the printer in an error state. Remove foreign objects only through the access points described by the manufacturer.

Clear a reported jam safely

Turn the printer off if the model’s instructions call for it, open the specified doors and pull paper slowly in the direction of the paper path. Do not force a sheet around a roller or use a sharp tool. If paper tears, look for fragments in every area named by the manual; a small remaining piece can trigger another jam. Close all doors before powering back on and check whether the error clears.

Microsoft’s general printer guidance also lists paper, ink, an open cover and paper jams among the first conditions to check when a printer reports an error: Microsoft’s Windows printer troubleshooting steps.

3. Perform a complete power restart

For an unresponsive or offline printer, use Microsoft Support’s sequence: Turn off your printer and unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug your printer back in, and then turn the printer back on. This clears a temporary state in the printer and its network interface; it does not remove jobs from the computer queue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Cancel or note any job that must be printed later.
  2. Turn the printer off using its power button.
  3. Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, reconnect power and turn it on.
  4. Wait until the display shows its ready state before testing again.

If the printer immediately returns to the same jam, cover or supply message, stop repeating restarts and follow that model-specific error path.

4. Verify the connection that the printer actually uses

USB connection

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the cable at both the printer and computer.
  2. Try a different USB port directly on the computer. Avoid a hub while diagnosing; Epson specifically notes that a hub can cause printing trouble.
  3. If possible, test with a known-good compatible cable. A replacement described as a USB printer cable must match the connector on the printer and the computer; USB connector shapes and printer requirements vary.
  4. Check whether the operating system detects the printer after reconnecting it. If it remains missing, continue with the remove-and-add procedure for your operating system rather than repeatedly resending jobs.

A USB cable cannot fix a printer that is detected and prints its local test page but has a blocked queue; use the test-page result to keep those problems separate.

Wi-Fi connection

  • Open the printer’s wireless-status screen or print its network report, if the model offers one, and confirm it is connected rather than merely searching.
  • Check that the computer is on the same network name as the printer. A computer connected through a different router, guest network or extender network may not be able to reach it.
  • Keep the printer’s displayed network name and address available when adding it again; do not change router settings unless the evidence points to a network configuration problem.
  • If the printer recently changed networks or the router password changed, use the model’s wireless-setup procedure to join the current network again.

Epson’s “Nothing Prints” guidance covers checking the USB connection, avoiding a problematic hub and confirming the computer and product connection. Microsoft’s Windows guidance likewise recommends checking the connection and shared network before reinstalling the printer: Epson “Nothing Prints” troubleshooting and Microsoft connection and printing troubleshooting.

Amazon Basics USB-A to USB-B 2.0 Cable for Printer or External Hard Drive, Gold-Plated Connectors, 10 Foot, Black
  • IN THE BOX: (1) 10-foot high-speed multi-shielded USB 2.0 A-Male to B-Male cable
  • DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Connects mice, keyboards, and speed-critical devices, such as external hard drives, printers, and cameras to a computer
  • ULTRA FAST SPEED: Full 2.0 USB capability with 480 Mbps transfer speed
  • DURABLE DESIGN: Corrosion-resistant, gold-plated connectors for optimal signal clarity and shielding to protect against noise, minimizing interference for a clear signal

5. Print a test page from the printer itself

A local test is the most useful dividing line because it does not depend on the original document, application or computer queue. Look for a “Print test page,” “Printer status,” “Product check,” “Nozzle check” or similar option on the control panel. Some models expose the same function in the manufacturer’s utility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the printer-side test from the display or utility.
  2. Let it complete without submitting another computer job.
  3. Record whether paper feeds, whether anything appears on the page and which message returns if it fails.

If the printer-side test prints

The printer can feed paper and create output. Focus on the computer branch: selected printer, connection, paused or offline status, pending jobs, application settings and driver or software installation. A successful local test does not prove that every application is configured correctly.

If the printer-side test fails

Stay on the printer branch. Follow the displayed paper, cover, supply, printhead or maintenance instruction for that model. Repeatedly sending jobs from the computer will not repair a failed internal test. Epson explicitly recommends using a product check and then checking product software if that check prints; Microsoft also recommends a test page to confirm printer operation. See Epson’s product-check guidance.

6. Clear a Windows queue that is stuck or offline

These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so use current Microsoft instructions if your installation differs. On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. On Windows 10, the corresponding area is Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.

  1. Select the exact printer you intend to use and open its queue.
  2. Cancel jobs that remain in “Printing,” “Error” or “Deleting.” If several documents are listed, cancel them all before submitting a fresh one.
  3. Open the queue’s Printer menu and make sure Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline are not selected.
  4. Return to the printer list and set the device as the default if you want applications to use it automatically. Check the name carefully when multiple similar printers are installed.
  5. Submit a one-page test document. If it remains blocked, restart the Windows Print Spooler.

Restart the Print Spooler

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Find Print Spooler in the Services window.
  3. Right-click it and choose Restart. If it is stopped, choose Start.
  4. Reopen the printer queue, cancel any stale item and send a new test page.

Microsoft’s offline-printer article documents clearing the queue, checking offline status and removing and adding the printer again when simpler steps fail: Microsoft offline-printer troubleshooting.

7. Remove and add the printer again when detection is wrong

Reinstallation is useful when Windows shows an obsolete port, duplicate printer or stale offline device after a network or USB change. It should not be the first response to a physical jam or failed local test.

  1. In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (or the Windows 10 equivalent), select the affected printer and choose Remove.
  2. Restart the computer and printer if the device still appears in the list or the queue cannot be closed.
  3. Return to the same settings page and choose Add device. Follow the detected-printer or manual-add path for the connection type.
  4. Print a Windows test page before returning to the original application.

Epson also advises checking the printer port and default-printer selection and reinstalling its printer software when clearing stalled spooler jobs does not help. Use the software and driver intended for the exact model and operating system. Microsoft notes that some ARM-based PCs may not install a printer through a manufacturer-provided installer; in that case, use Windows’ built-in add-printer route, while observing the manufacturer’s instructions for that model. See Microsoft’s connection and printing article.

8. Check the application and document only after the printer works

If Windows can print a test page but one application cannot, the printer and basic driver path are working. In that application, confirm that the intended printer—not a PDF writer, fax entry or duplicate offline printer—is selected. Try a new, simple one-page document to distinguish an application-specific file problem from a device problem.

  • Check that the document contains visible, printable content and that text or images are not hidden by the application’s layer or print settings.
  • Verify the selected paper size and tray match the media loaded in the printer.
  • Look for a print-preview warning or an application-specific error before changing cartridges.
  • If only one file fails, export or recreate a small test document; do not assume the printer is defective.

9. Separate “no response” from a blank or poor-quality page

No response or no paper movement

Start with the connection, selected printer, queue and offline status. The job has not reached the stage where ink, toner or printhead cleaning can help. A local test that succeeds confirms this computer-side focus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blank page after paper feeds

First confirm the document contains printable content and that the job uses the intended paper and supply settings. Then check the printer’s ink or toner status and follow its model-specific printhead or cartridge instructions. HP’s general troubleshooting material discusses cartridge and printhead checks for blank-page symptoms, including cleaning through the appropriate printer utility: HP printer troubleshooting.

  • MADE FOR HOME OFFICE AND WORKSTATIONS: The 6 ft length reaches across desks, shelves and printer stands without excessive cable clutter, ideal for home offices, schools, shared workstations and backup wired printer setups

Cleaning cycles consume ink and may not correct a communication fault. Run the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance once, inspect the resulting test pattern and stop if the utility reports a hardware or supply error. Do not promise that a generic cleaning method or a new cartridge will fix every blank-page condition.

Streaked, faint or partially missing output

Check the displayed supply level, cartridge or toner seating and the model’s print-quality diagnostic. A low supply, blocked nozzle, transfer problem or incorrect media setting can produce similar symptoms. Use the exact maintenance procedure for the model; avoid touching electrical contacts or printhead surfaces unless the manual instructs you to do so.

10. Handle supplies only after identifying the symptom

Ink or toner is relevant when paper feeds and the output is blank, faint or missing specific colors—not when the printer is absent from the queue. Identify the exact printer model and cartridge or toner number before purchasing anything. Check whether the printer reports an empty, incompatible or incorrectly seated supply, and reseat it only as the manual describes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some printers will not print when a required cartridge is empty, while others can print limited monochrome pages. That behavior is model-specific. Use the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model, such as HP’s detailed “Cannot Print” guidance at HP support, rather than assuming every all-in-one handles supplies the same way.

11. Know when basic troubleshooting is finished

Move to manufacturer support or qualified service when any of these conditions remains after the safe checks:

  • The built-in test page fails repeatedly and the same error returns after the documented paper, cover and supply steps.
  • The printer makes abnormal mechanical noises, smells overheated or shows physical damage.
  • A carriage, fuser, printhead or internal paper path cannot be accessed without forcing a mechanism or disassembling the device.
  • The printer is detected but will not complete its own maintenance or product check.
  • The model requires a firmware, regional supply or service procedure that its manual does not explain.

Have the model number, operating system, connection type, exact error text, test-page result and steps already attempted ready for support. This prevents repeating unrelated queue or cable checks.

A compact decision path

  1. Read the display and lights. Resolve an explicit jam, open-cover or supply condition with the model manual.
  2. Check paper and covers. Remove fragments carefully and make sure trays and doors are seated.
  3. Restart power. Unplug for 30 seconds, reconnect and wait for the ready state.
  4. Verify USB or Wi-Fi. Use a direct USB port or confirm both devices share the same network.
  5. Run the local test. A successful page sends you to the computer branch; a failed page keeps you on the printer branch.
  6. Clear the computer queue. Select the right printer, cancel stuck jobs, disable paused or offline status and restart Print Spooler on Windows if needed.
  7. Re-add the printer. Remove a stale Windows entry and add it again only after physical and connection checks.
  8. Investigate blank or streaked output. Check document content, supply status and model-specific maintenance.
  9. Escalate with evidence. Provide the model, error and test result when the internal test still fails.
