The 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition does not work with Xbox consoles. Its Xbox branding covers the design and Xbox button; 8BitDo officially lists Windows 10 (version 1903 or later) and Android 9.0 or later as compatible hosts. If you are using a supported Windows or Android device, fix most connection problems by matching the mode switch to the connection you want, pairing that mode correctly, and checking the keyboard’s indicators before investigating software or hardware.
First check: the host and the symptom
An Xbox console is not a supported host
8BitDo states that this keyboard cannot be used on Xbox consoles. The integrated Xbox button is intended for Windows use, where it activates Windows Game Bar; it does not make the keyboard an Xbox-console keyboard. If the keyboard will not connect to an Xbox One or Xbox Series console, there is no pairing setting that will make it compatible. Move the keyboard to a supported Windows or Android host before troubleshooting.

Supported operating systems
The product specification lists Windows 10 version 1903 or later and Android 9.0 or later. A device running an older operating system, a restricted work computer, or a host with disabled Bluetooth or USB access may fail independently of the keyboard. For a clean diagnosis, test on a supported host with a direct USB port or the included wireless adapter rather than through a hub or dock.

Classify what “not responding” means
There are four different failures that are often described with the same phrase:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- No connection: the host never lists or recognizes the keyboard.
- Power or idle shutdown: the keyboard appears to turn off after startup or while sitting unused.
- Connection without key input: the host shows a keyboard, but keystrokes do not arrive.
- Lighting or software control only: typing works, but RGB settings or Ultimate Software V2 do not respond.
Use the branch that matches your symptom. The Windows 11 lighting fix, for example, is not a documented remedy for missing keystrokes.
Know the three connection modes
| Mode | Switch position | What you need | Best diagnostic use |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB wired | OFF | A USB cable and a supported host port | Tests basic power and input without wireless pairing |
| 2.4G wireless | 2.4 | The included 2.4G adapter connected to the host | Wireless testing without Bluetooth device management |
| Bluetooth | BT | A host with Bluetooth enabled | Direct pairing; one Bluetooth host at a time |
The switch position is part of the setup. Plugging in a cable while the switch remains on a wireless setting, or searching Bluetooth while the switch is on 2.4, can make a working keyboard look dead. Turn the switch to the mode you are actually testing before following its procedure.
How to fix an 8BitDo Xbox keyboard that won’t connect
1. Test the wired USB connection
- Move the keyboard’s mode switch to OFF.
- Connect the keyboard directly to the host’s USB port.
- Wait for the operating system to recognize it before opening a text field and typing.
The wired mode does not use a wireless pairing record. It is therefore the quickest way to separate a general input problem from a Bluetooth or 2.4G problem. Try another known-good USB port if the host gives no recognition, and avoid a hub during this test. The documented automatic shutdown behavior does not apply while the keyboard is wired.

If the host does not recognize the keyboard in wired mode either, check the cable and host port, then test a second supported computer before concluding that the keyboard itself has failed.

2. Connect through 2.4G wireless
- Set the mode switch to 2.4.
- Insert the included 2.4G adapter into the host.
- Allow the host a moment to detect the adapter, then test typing.
If the adapter and keyboard are no longer paired, hold the keyboard’s Pair button for three seconds. The connection indicator should blink rapidly. While it is blinking, connect the 2.4G adapter to the host to complete pairing.
Use the supplied adapter for this procedure. A generic wireless receiver cannot be assumed to work because the keyboard’s pairing information is specific to its adapter. If the indicator never enters the rapid-blink state, charge the keyboard and repeat the procedure with the switch still set to 2.4.
3. Pair Bluetooth as “8BitDo Retro Keyboard X”
- Set the mode switch to BT.
- Hold the Pair button for three seconds.
- Wait for the connection indicator to blink rapidly.
- On the host, open Bluetooth settings and select “8BitDo Retro Keyboard X”.
- After the host reports a connection, open a text field and test several keys.
The visible Bluetooth name is not “Xbox keyboard”; selecting the exact 8BitDo Retro Keyboard X entry avoids pairing the wrong device. 8BitDo’s FAQ says that only one device can be connected over Bluetooth at a time. When moving the keyboard to another computer, tablet, or phone, pair it again on that host rather than expecting simultaneous Bluetooth connections.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the name does not appear, turn Bluetooth off and on at the host, keep the keyboard close during the initial pairing, and repeat the three-second Pair-button hold. Do not leave the keyboard idle while waiting: it can shut down if it fails to connect within one minute of startup.

When the keyboard appears to turn itself off
Read the indicator before trying another pairing
- Blinking indicator: the battery is low.
- Breathing indicator: the keyboard is charging.
- Solid indicator: the battery is fully charged.
Charge it until the indicator shows a full charge, then retry the selected connection mode. The product uses a 4,000mAh rechargeable battery. The manual estimates up to 300 hours over Bluetooth and 280 hours over 2.4G with RGB turned off; those figures vary with lighting, settings, and environmental conditions and are not a guarantee for every setup.
Understand the automatic shutdown timers
The manual says the keyboard shuts down automatically when it has not connected within one minute after startup. It also shuts down after 15 minutes without operation once connected. This behavior can look like an unresponsive keyboard if you begin pairing too late or leave it sitting while diagnosing it. Press a key or restart the relevant mode, then begin the pairing sequence immediately. The keyboard does not automatically shut down while it is wired.
8BitDo keyboard Bluetooth not connecting
Bluetooth troubleshooting has two separate checks: discovery and host history.
If the keyboard is not discoverable
- Confirm the switch is on BT, not 2.4 or OFF.
- Hold Pair for the full three seconds and look for rapid indicator blinking.
- Enable Bluetooth on the host and keep the keyboard within normal short-range distance during pairing.
- Look specifically for 8BitDo Retro Keyboard X.
- If the indicator stops and the keyboard powers down, restart the mode and begin the search again within one minute.
If it was paired to a different device
Because Bluetooth supports one connected device at a time, a previous host can be the reason a new host does not complete the connection. On the old host, disconnect the keyboard or remove its saved Bluetooth entry when practical. Then place the keyboard in Bluetooth pairing mode again and select its name on the new host. The official guidance describes pairing again when changing devices; it does not promise a multi-device Bluetooth memory or instant switching shortcut.

8BitDo Retro 87 keyboard not responding after it connects
Separate a host-input problem from a keyboard-mode problem
First test the same host with the keyboard in wired mode. If wired input works but one wireless mode does not, repeat that mode’s pairing procedure and verify its switch position. If no mode produces keystrokes on a supported host, try a second supported computer or Android device. This comparison is more useful than repeatedly changing RGB settings, because the official lighting instructions address illumination control rather than ordinary key input.
Check the host’s keyboard focus
Open a plain text field, address bar, or other known input box before judging the result. A keyboard can be connected while the active application ignores input, captures shortcuts, or is waiting for a different control. Test letters, numbers, and modifier keys separately so that a single application shortcut is not mistaken for a total keyboard failure.
Do not assume a documented factory reset exists
The reviewed manual and support materials do not provide a complete reset sequence for every unresponsive-keyboard report. Avoid undocumented key combinations that could change a setting without proving a repair. If wired and wireless tests on more than one supported host still produce no input, record the mode, indicator state, host operating system, and whether the keyboard is recognized, then contact 8BitDo support.

8BitDo keyboard lights or software not working on Windows 11
If typing works but RGB control or Ultimate Software V2 does not respond, use the specific Windows 11 lighting configuration documented by 8BitDo:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Open Ultimate Software V2 and select the Retro 87 Xbox Edition keyboard.
- Set the lighting control mode to “8BitDo RGB”.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- Turn off the option that allows Dynamic Lighting on your devices.
- Turn off the setting that allows compatible foreground apps to control lighting.
- Reconnect the keyboard or restart Ultimate Software V2, then test the lighting controls again.
This procedure concerns RGB ownership between Windows and 8BitDo software. It is not evidence that Dynamic Lighting causes missing key input, and changing it should not replace the connection tests above. Windows Dynamic Lighting support was listed for wired operation in the keyboard’s v1.05 firmware notes, so use the wired connection when configuring that feature.
Check firmware without flashing the wrong keyboard
8BitDo’s support listing showed firmware v1.07 for this keyboard. The listed changes include optimized input accuracy in v1.07, optimized key-input latency in v1.06, and Windows Dynamic Lighting support over a wired connection in v1.05, configured through Ultimate Software V2.
Firmware is a maintenance step, not a substitute for selecting the correct connection mode. In Ultimate Software V2, identify the exact Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition before selecting any firmware. Do not apply a file intended for another 8BitDo keyboard. Keep the keyboard wired during any update and follow the software’s on-screen instructions; if the application does not identify the device, return to the USB connection test rather than forcing an update.
When only one key fails
A single dead key is a different problem from a keyboard that cannot connect. First establish that the host connection is stable by typing with several other keys and testing a second documented mode. The Xbox Edition is hot-swappable, and 8BitDo says its switches can be replaced with compatible third-party three-pin or five-pin switches. That option is relevant only after you have ruled out connection, power, and host-input problems.
Check the exact pin compatibility of any replacement switch before installing it. A switch replacement cannot repair a Bluetooth pairing failure, a dead USB connection, or a keyboard that produces no input at all. If multiple keys fail together, or a replacement does not change the symptom, stop treating it as an individual switch fault and contact the manufacturer.
A practical decision path
- Using an Xbox console? Stop: this model is not compatible with Xbox consoles. Use a supported Windows or Android host.
- Which mode are you testing? Set the switch to OFF for USB, 2.4 for the adapter, or BT for Bluetooth.
- Does wired USB work? If yes, the remaining fault is specific to wireless pairing, host Bluetooth, or the 2.4G adapter. If no, test another cable, port, and supported host.
- Is the indicator blinking or shutting down? Charge the keyboard and restart pairing within the one-minute connection window.
- Is Bluetooth the problem? Pair the device named 8BitDo Retro Keyboard X; pair again when changing hosts.
- Does typing work but lighting fail? Use 8BitDo RGB in Ultimate Software V2 and disable the two relevant Windows Dynamic Lighting controls.
- Still no input in more than one mode and host? The official materials do not establish a universal reset or a specific internal failure. Give 8BitDo support your host, mode, indicator state, and test results.
What to tell support
A concise record helps support distinguish a pairing issue from a power or hardware fault. Include the keyboard’s exact model name, host operating system and version, tested mode, switch position, whether the host recognizes the device, the indicator behavior, and whether wired USB worked. Also note whether the symptom affects every key or only one key, and whether the problem is key input or RGB/software control. This information is more actionable than saying only that the keyboard is “not responding.”
The Bottom Line
For a supported Windows or Android host, set the correct mode first: OFF for USB, 2.4 for the included adapter, or BT for Bluetooth pairing as 8BitDo Retro Keyboard X. Charge the keyboard if its indicator blinks, remember its one-minute connection and 15-minute idle shutdown behavior, and reserve the Windows Dynamic Lighting fix for RGB/software symptoms. Xbox consoles are not supported; unresolved input failures after testing another documented mode and host require 8BitDo support.
