Check whether your PC is within the published requirements
Compare the computer running Steam with the Windows, processor, memory, graphics, DirectX and storage requirements below. The minimum specification is the baseline for starting the game; it is not a promise of smooth performance in every scene.

Check available space rather than only the drive’s advertised capacity. Windows, Steam updates and temporary files also need room. An SSD is marked as preferred, so moving the installation from a hard drive to a stable SSD is a sensible investigation for long loads or hitching. The listing does not establish that an SSD is required or that replacing a drive universally fixes crashes.
How to check the important values in Windows
- Open Settings > System > About to see the Windows edition, processor and installed RAM.
- Press Windows + R, enter
dxdiag, and inspect the System and Display tabs for DirectX and graphics information. - In File Explorer > This PC, check free space on the drive that contains the Steam library.
- Compare the exact GPU model, not just the amount of video memory, with the GTX 1070 or RX 5600 XT minimum class.
If the PC falls below a minimum requirement, software troubleshooting cannot make that hardware meet the published baseline. If it meets the minimum but not the recommended level, prioritize stable drivers, free storage and conservative graphics settings once the game launches.

Use the newest available build before testing older workarounds. The Steam Community feed has documented official demo hotfixes for general performance and stability, a resolution-settings confirmation bug, and an AMD-GPU display/HUD issue. Those notes apply to the builds they identify, so they should not be presented as a complete database of every release crash; they do show why an outdated installation is an early suspect.

- In Steam, open Library, right-click Among the Trolls, choose Properties, and use the available update controls on the Updates page. Let any download finish before launching.
- Allow Steam itself to update, then restart Steam so a pending client update is actually applied.
- Run Windows Update from Settings > Windows Update. Restart Windows when requested rather than postponing the restart indefinitely.
- Install the current driver for the installed NVIDIA or AMD GPU from the manufacturer’s normal driver channel. Confirm the driver version afterward if you need to report the problem.
- Launch once with the updated software before making several other changes. If the failure began immediately after an update, record that timing; do not repeatedly alter resolution while an older build is still installed.
Verify the Steam installation
Interrupted downloads, an incomplete update or a damaged file can prevent a game from launching or can produce a freeze while assets load. Steam’s official troubleshooting sequence includes file-integrity verification.
- Open Steam > Library.
- Right-click Among the Trolls and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to complete the scan and any replacement download.
- Restart Steam after the operation, then test the game once before changing another variable.
A verification result that downloads files is meaningful evidence: the previous installation was not identical to the expected files. A clean result does not prove that your driver, Windows build or another program is compatible; continue with the symptom-specific checks if the same failure remains.
Test for conflicts from background software and overlays
Steam recommends disabling non-essential software because launch failures can arise from many unique software configurations. Overlays, capture tools, hardware monitors, RGB controllers and other utilities can inject into a game or compete for resources. This is a diagnostic test, not a recommendation to permanently remove every utility.
- Close non-essential programs from the notification area and Task Manager. Keep a written list of what you stop.
- Turn off optional overlays and in-game recording features in the applications you use, then restart Steam.
- Launch Among the Trolls and reproduce the same action that normally fails.
- If the crash disappears, re-enable programs one at a time and test after each change. The first program that restores the problem is a strong lead.
- Restore software you need after testing. Do not leave security protection disabled as a permanent workaround.
If disabling everything non-essential changes nothing, restore those settings and move to the next branch rather than assuming the background-software test was a wasted step. A negative result rules out one class of conflict; it does not identify the final cause.

Fix an immediate crash or return to Steam
When no game window appears, start with the highest-probability configuration checks instead of changing graphics options inside the game.
- Confirm Windows 10 Home 64-bit or a supported 64-bit Windows setup, DirectX 12 support, 16 GB or more of RAM, the minimum processor and graphics class, and at least 30 GB free on the Steam library drive.
- Finish updates for the game, Steam, Windows and the GPU driver.
- Verify the game files.
- Run one test with non-essential background software and overlays disabled.
- If it still exits, record whether Steam displays an error, whether a crash dialog appears, and the exact time between pressing Play and the return to the Library.
That sequence follows Steam’s first-line guidance and separates an installation problem from a machine or software-configuration problem. Do not claim that one step is a universal fix: Steam specifically warns that launch failures have multiple causes.
Investigate a loading-screen freeze
A loading freeze can be related to storage pressure or performance even when the PC is otherwise above minimum requirements. First check that the library drive has substantially more than the required 30 GB available, then verify the files. Confirm that the drive is stable and that Windows can read other large files without errors.

- If the game is on a hard drive, compare behavior after moving it to a reliable SSD when practical. The published listing prefers an SSD, but does not make it mandatory.
- Watch whether the freeze happens at the same loading step every time or only after long sessions. Consistent timing is useful when reporting the issue.
- Observe system memory and temperatures during a reproduction. A machine close to the 16 GB minimum may have less headroom when other programs are open.
- Disable overlays and capture tools for the test, because they can affect loading and rendering.
- Verify files again after an interrupted update or a forced shutdown.
Do not delete random configuration folders or claim that reinstalling Windows is required; the cited guidance establishes updates, verification, requirements and software isolation, not those invasive remedies.

Handle crashes after changing resolution
The official demo hotfix notes include a fix for a bug involving confirmation buttons in the resolution settings. If the crash began after changing resolution, update the game first and avoid repeatedly applying new display settings on the old build.
- Close the game and allow Steam to finish every pending update.
- Restart Steam, then launch without making another resolution change.
- If the game opens, change one display setting at a time and confirm whether the problem returns.
- Record the previous and new resolution, display mode and GPU model if the crash persists after updating.
This branch is specific to the documented demo issue. It should not be treated as proof that every resolution-related crash in every release has the same cause.
Resolve AMD display or HUD problems
The demo hotfix feed also records an AMD-GPU display/HUD fix. A missing interface, corrupted HUD or unusual cutscene rendering on an AMD card therefore merits an update check before invasive troubleshooting.

- Update the game to the current Steam build and install the current compatible AMD driver.
- Restart Windows and test with overlays disabled.
- Note whether the problem affects only the HUD, only cutscenes, or the entire display, and whether it happens from the first launch.
If the visual problem remains, include those details in a support report. The hotfix note confirms that this class of issue has existed in a demo build, but it does not establish that every current AMD rendering failure is fixed.
Work through random in-game freezes
There is no published universal cause or crash-rate statistic for Among the Trolls. For freezes that occur after you are already playing, compare the system state at the moment of failure instead of applying unrelated fixes at random.
- Check whether available RAM is nearly exhausted, especially on a 16 GB system with browsers or launchers open.
- Observe CPU and GPU temperatures and whether the driver reports a reset.
- Confirm that Windows and the graphics driver are current.
- Disable non-essential overlays and monitoring or capture utilities, then reproduce the same location or action.
- Verify the Steam files, particularly after a patch, interrupted download or forced shutdown.
Keep a short log containing the location, elapsed play time, what was on screen, temperatures or memory observations, and whether each test changed the behavior. A pattern is more useful than a claim that the game simply feels unstable.
Prepare an escalation report when the standard sequence fails
Use the game’s official Steam community or support channels after completing the basic checks. A reproducible report lets others distinguish a game defect from a local configuration issue.

Include:
- The exact symptom and timing: immediate exit, loading freeze, resolution change, AMD HUD/display problem, or random in-game freeze.
- Windows edition and version, CPU, total RAM, GPU model, DirectX support and free space on the Steam drive.
- GPU driver version and the date you last updated the game and Steam.
- Whether Steam file verification replaced anything.
- Which overlays or non-essential programs were disabled and whether the result changed.
- The precise reproduction steps, including a save or location when appropriate.
Do not describe an undated hotfix note as a confirmed fix for the current release. State which build you tested and distinguish what you observed from what the official notes document.
