Then establish whether the error came from the origin or from CloudFront’s attempt to reach it. Check the matching cache behavior, origin path and access rules before changing settings; a 403, 404, 502 and 504 point to different failure layers.
1. Capture the failure before changing the distribution
Record the exact URL that fails and test the parent manifest and a failing media segment separately. Also note the HTTP status, any CloudFront error code or response headers, the time of the failure, and the affected viewer or region if known. A single viewer report does not establish that every viewer is affected.
CloudFront carries video over HTTP; the stream itself is commonly packaged as manifests and media segments. AWS lists HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming and CMAF among the supported streaming formats. Their URL paths and endpoint layouts can differ, so keep the actual format and endpoint in view while diagnosing the request. AWS: Video on demand and live streaming video with CloudFront
2. Determine which layer returned the error
A CloudFront 4xx or 5xx can reflect a response returned by the origin or a failure in communication between CloudFront and the origin. Use the status and error details to choose the next check rather than applying one fix to every error. AWS’s status-specific guide covers 400, 401, 403, 404, 412, 500, 502, 503 and 504 responses. - 4xx: Check the request, path, authorization and origin response. A 403 or 404 does not, by itself, prove a CloudFront-wide outage.
- 5xx: Check whether the origin returned the status or CloudFront could not obtain a response. For a 502, DNS and TLS connectivity are key checks; for a 504, investigate reachability before application delay or timeout settings.
3. Check the manifest and segment routing
In the CloudFront distribution, compare the failing request path with the configured origin domain, origin path and cache behavior path pattern. Confirm that the manifest and segment requests reach the intended origin. A behavior that routes a path to the wrong endpoint can return 404 even when the stream is otherwise available.
AWS’s MediaPackage live-streaming examples use endpoint-specific origin configuration and distinguish manifest behavior from segment behavior. They also show a wildcard behavior for unmatched requests. These examples apply to particular workflows; do not copy a pattern until you have confirmed your own packaging format, endpoint and URL structure. 4. Check origin access and object existence
For an S3 origin
For a 403 from an S3 origin, verify that the requested object exists and that its key matches exactly, including capitalization. Then check the bucket permissions and the credentials or origin-access configuration CloudFront uses. A missing object or case mismatch can appear as Access Denied, as can missing permissions or insufficient credentials; do not treat every S3 403 as proof of a single permission problem. For MediaPackage or another HTTP origin
Use the origin’s access rules, configuration and logs to determine whether the request arrived and what status the origin returned. S3 object-key checks do not apply to a non-S3 origin; verify its own endpoint, authorization and path requirements instead.

5. Diagnose 502 and 504 connectivity failures
HTTP 502: Bad Gateway
Check the origin hostname and DNS configuration, then verify that CloudFront can establish a TLS connection to the origin. Use the specific CloudFront error details and configured origin hostname to narrow the cause; a generic 502 alone does not identify which setting failed. AWS: HTTP 502 status code (Bad Gateway)
HTTP 504: Gateway Timeout
Start by confirming that the custom origin is reachable from the public internet and that its firewall and security-group rules permit the required CloudFront traffic. If reachability is in place, investigate whether the application responds too slowly and whether the origin timeout configuration fits its response time. The origin itself can also return a 504, so check its logs and response rather than assuming CloudFront generated it. AWS: HTTP 504 status code (Gateway Timeout)

6. Allow for cached error responses after a fix
CloudFront can cache error responses. How long an error remains visible depends on the status code, edge-cache state, custom error configuration, the error caching minimum TTL and, in some cases, Cache-Control headers. AWS’s general status-processing guidance gives a 10-second default minimum TTL, but that is not a guaranteed wait time for every distribution or response.
