How to Fix AirPods Pro Low-Battery Notifications That Are Too Loud

If the low-battery chime in your AirPods Pro is painfully loud, lower Tone Volume rather than the iPhone’s ordinary media-volume slider. With the AirPods connected and in your ears, open Settings > Accessibility > AirPods, select the affected pair, and move Tone Volume to the left. Apple identifies low-battery alerts as AirPods sound effects controlled by this setting.

Lower the AirPods Pro low-battery alert volume

Use this iPhone or iPad procedure:

  1. Put both AirPods Pro in your ears.
  2. Confirm they are connected to the iPhone or iPad.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Tap Accessibility, then AirPods.
  5. If more than one pair appears, select the AirPods Pro that are producing the chime.
  6. Drag Tone Volume to the left.
  7. Leave the setting in place and test it when another AirPods sound effect occurs.

Apple’s AirPods guide says Tone Volume controls sound effects such as insertion tones, control tones and low-battery alerts: AirPods User Guide. The iPhone path is documented at Apple Support.

The AirPods must be connected while you change the control. If AirPods is missing under Accessibility, connect the earbuds first, then close and reopen Settings.

Why the iPhone volume slider may not help

Several different sounds can be associated with AirPods, and they do not all use the same control:

Battery card or banner appears on screen Visual iPhone or iPad notification Separate from the audible earbud tone

Apple documents on-screen low-battery notifications separately from the tone heard in one or both AirPods: Apple’s AirPods charging and battery information. Lowering media volume, ringer volume or ordinary notification settings is therefore not the dependable fix for an alert generated inside the earbuds. Apple does not document turning off all iPhone notifications as a way to disable that earbud tone.

If the charging case is making the noise

A chime when you put the earbuds in the case, begin charging, or the case battery is low may come from the case’s built-in speaker rather than from either earbud. On supported models, including AirPods Pro 2 and certain newer AirPods models, disable it this way:

  1. Connect the AirPods to your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Tap the AirPods name near the top of the screen.
  4. Turn off Enable Charging Case Sounds.

The switch is model-dependent; its absence does not necessarily indicate a fault. Apple lists the supported settings at AirPods settings. Do not apply this case-speaker instruction to every AirPods Pro generation.

What battery levels trigger AirPods warnings?

Apple documents the following behavior:

Battery level or event Documented indication
20% On-screen low-battery notification
10% On-screen notification and an audible tone
5% On-screen low-battery notification
Immediately before shutdown Another audible tone

These are Apple’s documented thresholds, not a guarantee that every sound you hear is the low-battery tone. A connection sound, case alert or shutdown sound can be mistaken for it. See Apple’s battery and charging guidance for the documented distinction.

Tone Volume is missing or does nothing

Confirm the connection and selected pair

Keep the AirPods in your ears and connected while opening Accessibility settings. If you own multiple sets, select the pair currently connected and producing the sound. An entry for another pair will not change the active earbuds.

Restart the AirPods

Put both AirPods in their charging case, close the lid for at least 10 seconds, then open the case and reconnect. This is Apple’s restart procedure: AirPods User Guide.

Let firmware update automatically

AirPods firmware updates are delivered automatically; there is no normal download button. First update the paired iPhone, iPad or Mac. Then:

  1. Turn on Bluetooth and connect the device to Wi-Fi.
  2. Put the AirPods in their case.
  3. Connect the case to power and close the lid.
  4. Keep the case near the paired Apple device for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Reconnect the AirPods and check whether the alert behavior changed.

Apple describes this process at About AirPods firmware updates. An update may help with a software problem, but it is not a guaranteed cure. If installation repeatedly fails, Apple recommends resetting the AirPods and trying again.

  5. Hold the case setup button for about 15 seconds.

Change Tone Volume on other Apple devices

If the AirPods are connected elsewhere, Apple also provides a Tone Volume control on these platforms. Labels can move between operating-system releases:

  • Mac: System Settings > Accessibility > Audio, select the AirPods, then adjust Tone Volume.
  • Apple Watch: Settings > Accessibility > AirPods, select the AirPods, then adjust Tone Volume.
  • Apple TV: Settings > Accessibility > AirPods, select the AirPods, then adjust Tone Volume.

See Apple’s current AirPods User Guide for device-specific wording. The iPhone path remains the most direct option for most AirPods Pro owners.

Hearing-safety considerations

A sudden loud chime can be uncomfortable, especially for someone with sound sensitivity or a hearing condition. Do not treat Tone Volume as a medical safeguard. Apple’s Reduce Loud Audio feature is intended for headphone-audio exposure and is not the direct control for an AirPods low-battery tone: Apple Support.

When to contact Apple

Seek Apple Support or service if the alert remains abnormally loud after you confirm Tone Volume, test the AirPods with another Apple device, restart, update and (if necessary) reset them. Service is also appropriate when:

  • Other AirPods sound effects are distorted, crackling or unexpectedly loud.
  • One earbud behaves differently from the other.
  • The case speaker continues making sounds despite a supported case-sound switch being turned off.
  • The problem followed physical damage, liquid exposure or suspected battery failure.

Apple’s service and repair options are available through the AirPods support hub.
