Most AirPods 5 failures are resolved by checking charge and contacts, selecting the correct audio output, and then using the AirPods 5 front-case pairing or reset gesture. First confirm whether you have AirPods 5 or AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, because their cases and earbuds are different and cannot be mixed. Identify the AirPods 5 variant and the exact symptom
AirPods 5 is sold in two separately identified configurations: AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Apple lists both as 2026 models. Each case has a USB-C port, while the second variant also supports wireless charging. The case and earbuds from one variant are not interchangeable with the other, so model identification matters before you order a replacement part or follow case-specific charging advice.

Check the model
- On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Find your AirPods and tap the Info button.
- Compare the displayed model information with the model number printed on the earbud. If the earbuds are not connected, inspect the printed number directly.
Do not use an older guide that tells you to press a setup button on the back of the case. AirPods 5 uses a double-tap on the front of the case for pairing and a timed, three-stage front double-tap for a factory reset.

- Neither earbud connects: start with the connection sequence below, then reset if necessary.
- The case or earbuds do not charge: perform the 15-minute power and cable checks before treating the problem as Bluetooth-related.
- One earbud is silent or quiet: check its individual charge and test it by itself before resetting.
- Both connect but there is no sound: check the selected audio output and volume, then inspect the one-earbud and balance settings if applicable.
This classification prevents a common mistake: trying to repair a charging or output problem by repeatedly switching Bluetooth off and on. Work from power to connection to playback, and make one change at a time so you know which step helped.

When AirPods 5 will not connect
Complete the easy checks first
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the latest available operating system. Apple’s connection instructions target those devices; the exact screens can differ by operating-system version.
- Put both earbuds in the case and verify that each one is seated and charging. A flat earbud cannot complete pairing.
- On the host device, open Bluetooth settings and make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
- Put the earbuds in your ears and open the device’s AirPlay or audio-output list. If the AirPods appear, select them, raise the device volume, and play a test sound. This fixes cases where the Bluetooth connection exists but audio is still routed to the phone, tablet, speaker, or computer.
Give the case a fresh discovery attempt
- Return both earbuds to the case.
- Close the lid for 15 seconds.
- Open the lid and keep the earbuds inside.
- Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on. Continue until the light flashes white.
- Hold the open case close to the iPhone or iPad and follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
For a Mac, use its manual Bluetooth-pairing flow after putting AirPods 5 into the white-flashing discovery state. The guided iPhone or iPad sequence should not be assumed to cover every third-party Bluetooth host.
If the AirPods still do not appear
Return to the charge section and make sure the case has had power for at least 15 minutes. A case with insufficient charge may not keep the status light on long enough to enter pairing. Also inspect whether both earbuds are making contact in their wells. Once power is confirmed, repeat the 15-second closed-lid attempt and the front double-tap. If the earbuds remain undiscoverable, use the model-specific reset procedure rather than repeatedly toggling Bluetooth.
If the AirPods appear in the device list but immediately disconnect, leave both earbuds in the case, close the lid, and repeat the charge and contact check. A connection entry by itself does not prove that both earbuds have usable power. After pairing, select AirPods again from the output list and test with a short audio clip.
When AirPods 5 or the case will not charge
Charge for at least 15 minutes
- Place both earbuds in the case and close the lid.
- Connect the cable appropriate for your case to the USB-C port.
- Plug the other end into a known-working power adapter and power source.
- Leave the case and earbuds charging for at least 15 minutes before testing them again.
Check every connection, not just the case: the plug must be fully inserted into the case, the cable must fit firmly in the adapter, and the adapter must be receiving power. A damaged or loose cable can look like a dead case. A USB-C cable is a means of supplying power, not a guaranteed repair, and Apple does not require a special AirPods-branded cable for wired charging.
Use the case light and device battery view as clues

Status-light behavior can vary with the model and firmware. The iPhone, iPad, or Mac battery view is useful for distinguishing a charged case from an earbud that is not making contact. A green case light does not necessarily mean both earbuds are fully charged, so check the individual earbud readings when one side is failing.
If you use wireless charging
Wireless charging applies only to the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case variant. Place that case centrally on a supported charger. If the light does not come on or charging does not begin, reposition the case and try again. If wireless charging remains unreliable, connect the case directly by cable; that separates a charger-position problem from a case or power problem.

Inspect the USB-C port without improvising a cleaning method
Lint or other debris in the charging port can prevent the plug from seating. Follow Apple’s current, model-specific cleaning instructions for the case. Do not pour liquid into the port or insert an unapproved object, and do not assume that scraping the contacts will restore charging. If the port is physically loose, bent, or damaged, stop forcing the cable and arrange service.
Only after the 15-minute charge, cable, power-source, and contact checks should you move to a reset. A reset cannot repair a disconnected cable, a blocked port, or a failed charging component.
When one AirPod has no sound or is quieter
Check the silent earbud’s charge and contacts
- Make sure the case itself has charge and that its charging port is clear according to Apple’s cleaning guidance.
- Put both earbuds in the case, close the lid, and leave them there for 30 seconds.
- Open the lid near the iPhone or iPad and check the battery state for each earbud. A missing or very different reading can indicate that one earbud is not contacting the case.
- Put the affected earbud in its proper ear. Leave the other earbud in the case and keep the lid closed, then play audio.
- If the affected earbud starts working, return both earbuds to the case, charge them for another 30 seconds, and test them together again.
This isolation test matters: it distinguishes a one-earbud charge or contact issue from a general output problem. If the earbud remains silent after the test, reset AirPods 5 using the sequence below. If you have just received a replacement earbud, use Apple’s replacement-earbud setup procedure rather than assuming it will automatically pair with the existing case.
Fix uneven volume
When both earbuds play but one is quieter, inspect the speaker mesh for debris and use Apple’s model-appropriate cleaning instructions. Then check the device balance control: Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Balance. Center the slider. A balance setting moved toward one side can imitate a failed speaker even when both earbuds are connected and charged.
Do not confuse a balance error with a completely silent earbud. If the balance slider is centered and the same side remains silent when tested alone, continue with the charge, contact, and reset sequence instead of raising the volume indefinitely.

Use the timed, three-stage front double-tap
- Put both earbuds in their case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On a paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth. If AirPods appear under My Devices, tap Info, choose Forget This Device, and confirm. If they are not listed, continue.
- Open the case lid with both earbuds inside.
- While the status light is on, double-tap the front of the case.
- When the light flashes white, double-tap the front again.
- When the light flashes faster, double-tap the front a third time.
- Wait for the light to flash amber and then white. Keep the lid open, bring the case near the iPhone or iPad, and follow the pairing prompt.
The three double-taps are timed to the light changes; they are not three taps delivered at random. If the light does not flash white, close the case for 20 seconds and repeat the model-specific sequence. Do not substitute the rear-button reset instructions written for older AirPods models.
What to do immediately after a reset
Pair the AirPods again, select them in the audio-output list, and test both earbuds. Recreate custom settings only after you confirm that charging, connection, and playback work. If the reset succeeds but one earbud still has no sound, return to the individual-earbud test rather than performing repeated resets.
Forgetting the device and resetting the case are related but distinct steps. Forgetting removes the saved Bluetooth entry on the iPhone or iPad; the timed case gesture resets the AirPods themselves. Complete both when Apple’s sequence calls for them, then pair as a new device.
Replacement parts and compatibility
AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are separate product variants. Their cases and earbuds are not cross-compatible. Before buying a replacement case or earbud, verify the model in Bluetooth settings or from the number printed on the earbud. A part that looks physically similar can still be the wrong variant.
If only one earbud was replaced, complete Apple’s replacement setup process so the new earbud can be associated with the existing case and its mate. If a replacement part will not charge or pair, confirm the model match before troubleshooting the Bluetooth connection again.

Do not assume that a wireless-capable case can be substituted for the standard case, or that a standard case will provide wireless charging. The variant determines the compatible case and earbuds.
