How to fix AirPlay screen mirroring when your TV shows a black screen or no sound

AirPlay problems usually fall into one of three layers: the source and receiver cannot complete a local-network connection, the TV or Apple TV is not permitted to receive AirPlay, or the video and audio path is connected but configured incorrectly. Start with the software and network checks, then isolate HDMI hardware if an Apple TV still displays black. For missing sound, check volume and mute on both the source device and the television or receiver before replacing anything.

The sequence below covers iPhone or Mac mirroring to an Apple TV (4K or HD) and to an AirPlay 2-enabled smart TV. Follow the branch that matches what you see rather than changing several settings at once.

Check the AirPlay prerequisites

Power on and bring the devices near each other

Turn on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is sending the picture and the Apple TV or AirPlay 2-enabled smart TV that is receiving it. Keep the devices reasonably close while testing. Apple lists power, proximity, and an active connection on both devices as first-line checks. If either device is asleep, still booting, or showing a disconnected network status, mirroring may not start reliably.

Install available software updates

Update the source device and the receiver before deeper troubleshooting. Software versions on the two ends can affect discovery and playback, and Apple places updating near the beginning of its AirPlay troubleshooting sequence. Complete an update, allow the device to restart fully, and then test one mirroring session before changing another setting.

Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network

AirPlay discovery requires Wi-Fi on the source and the receiver to be connected to the same network. On an iPhone, open Settings and review Wi-Fi; confirm the network name matches the one shown on the Apple TV or smart TV. A phone on a guest network and a TV on the main network can appear to have working internet while still being unable to discover each other.

Temporarily remove a VPN configuration from the test path. Apple warns that a VPN can interfere with local networking, which AirPlay uses to find and communicate with the receiver. After disconnecting the VPN, close and reopen the mirroring control and test again. Restore the VPN afterward if you need it, but note that it may need to remain disconnected during AirPlay use.

Start mirroring from the correct control

On an iPhone, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and choose the listed Apple TV or AirPlay 2-enabled smart TV. Wi-Fi must be enabled on the iPhone, and both devices must be on the same network. If the receiver does not appear in the list, stay in this section and recheck power, Wi-Fi, software, and VPN status instead of repeatedly tapping a missing device.

Run Apple’s reset sequence in order

Once the prerequisites are confirmed, use this order. It changes one layer at a time and makes it clear which action restored service.

  1. Confirm compatibility and readiness. Verify that the receiver is an Apple TV or AirPlay 2-enabled smart TV, that it is powered on, and that the source device is awake and nearby.
  2. Update both ends. Install available software updates on the source and receiver, then wait for each device to finish restarting.
  3. Verify Wi-Fi membership. Check that Wi-Fi is enabled on the source and that both devices show the same network name. Disconnect any VPN configuration that could block local networking while you test.
  4. Allow AirPlay receiving. Open the receiver’s AirPlay settings and make sure receiving AirPlay connections is allowed. A device can be visible on the network yet reject mirroring when this permission is disabled.
  5. Restart the devices. Restart the source and the receiver after changing permissions or network settings. Start a fresh session from Control Center rather than attempting to resume the old one.
  6. Review Home app restrictions. If the Apple TV or speaker is managed in the Home app, inspect its home settings for restrictions that prevent AirPlay access. Remove or relax the restriction for the test, then try mirroring again.
  7. Handle a password prompt. If Apple TV asks for a password, review its AirPlay password restrictions and enter the required password. A prompt that is dismissed or repeatedly rejected prevents the session from completing.

These are Apple’s first-line AirPlay checks. Apple’s AirPlay troubleshooting guidance was published September 15, 2025, and specifically calls out permissions, Home app restrictions, and password restrictions in addition to power, updates, network membership, and restarting.

Fix a black screen during AirPlay mirroring

When the Apple TV menus work but the mirrored image is black

If the Apple TV home screen is visible and only the mirrored content is black, treat the problem as an AirPlay session failure first. Confirm that AirPlay receiving is allowed, repeat the same-network check, and disconnect a VPN during the test. Then restart both devices and begin a new session from Control Center > Screen Mirroring on the iPhone.

Check Home app restrictions and any Apple TV password requirement before trying cables. These controls can allow the receiver to appear while blocking the actual mirroring connection. Once the permission path is clear, test with a simple screen view rather than immediately opening a particular video app; this separates general mirroring from an individual app’s playback behavior.

A black Apple TV screen that includes the home screen points to the HDMI path. Work through the physical isolation sequence below, making only one change between tests:

  1. Reseat both HDMI ends. Unplug the HDMI connector from the Apple TV and from the television, switch, or AV receiver. Push each end back in firmly and select the corresponding TV input.
  2. Try another HDMI cable. A cable can fail intermittently or fail to carry the required signal even when its plugs look intact. Use a known-good replacement for the test.
  3. Select the matching TV input. Use the television’s input control to choose the HDMI port physically connected to the Apple TV. Selecting a different input produces a black or no-signal result even though the Apple TV is running.
  4. Move to another TV HDMI port. Connect the Apple TV to a different input on the television and select that input. This tests the original port as well as the cable.
  5. Bypass switches and AV receivers. Connect the Apple TV directly to the television, temporarily removing an HDMI switch or AV receiver from the chain. If the picture returns with a direct connection, the switch or receiver is the component that needs further investigation.

For an HDMI 2.1 connection, Apple specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Use that cable type when the Apple TV, display, and link are operating over HDMI 2.1. This recommendation belongs after the reseat, replacement, input, port, and bypass tests; it does not address a Wi-Fi or permission failure.

Interpret the direct-connection test

A direct TV connection is an isolation test, not merely a permanent wiring suggestion. If direct connection restores the Apple TV picture, reconnect the switch or receiver by itself and test again. The result narrows the fault to that intermediary or to how it negotiates the signal. If the screen remains black even when the Apple TV is directly connected with a known-good cable and the correct input selected, the television input or the Apple TV hardware remains in the path and requires device-specific support.

Restore sound when the picture is visible

When AirPlay displays the image but you hear nothing, start with volume and mute controls rather than HDMI replacement. Apple’s instruction is to make sure the volume is turned up and not muted on both the iOS device and the television or receiver. Apply that check to the actual source and the equipment producing sound:

  • Raise the volume on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac that started AirPlay.
  • Clear mute on the television’s remote or controls and raise the TV volume.
  • If the TV sends sound through an AV receiver, clear mute and raise the receiver’s volume as well.
  • Start a new AirPlay session after changing the controls so the test reflects the current state.

Do not confuse a silent receiver with a black HDMI signal. If the Apple TV menus and mirrored picture are visible, the video link is functioning; stay on the audio-control branch. If the screen is black as well, perform the network and HDMI checks in their respective sections instead of assuming that a volume change will restore video.

AirPlay receiving permissions and Home controls

Allow receiving on the Apple TV or smart TV

AirPlay receiving is a gate on the receiver. Open the receiver’s AirPlay settings and enable the option that allows incoming AirPlay connections. The exact menu wording can vary between Apple TV software versions and smart-TV manufacturers, but the setting must permit receiving before Screen Mirroring can complete.

If the receiver is visible in the iPhone’s Screen Mirroring list but the session drops back to the list or leaves a black picture, revisit this permission before changing HDMI equipment. A visible device is not proof that receiving is allowed.

Check restrictions in the Home app

Apple identifies Home app restrictions as another cause of blocked AirPlay access. If the Apple TV or speaker belongs to a Home configuration, open the Home app and inspect the accessory’s access restrictions. Temporarily remove a restriction for troubleshooting, test mirroring, and then restore the intended household setting once you know whether it was the blocker.

Respond correctly to Apple TV password requests

An Apple TV can require a password for AirPlay. When prompted, enter the configured password; if you do not know it, review the Apple TV’s AirPlay password restriction rather than repeatedly attempting random entries. A failed password check stops the connection even when Wi-Fi and the HDMI path are healthy.

Apple TV versus an AirPlay 2 smart TV

The source-side procedure is the same for both receivers: keep Wi-Fi enabled, use the same network, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and choose the receiver. The useful distinction is where to continue when the session fails.

Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD

Apple TV has a separate HDMI link to the television or to an intermediary switch or AV receiver. If its own menus are black, use the cable, input, port, and direct-connection tests. If its menus are visible but mirroring is black, stay with AirPlay permissions, Home restrictions, password requirements, and network checks.

AirPlay 2-enabled smart TV

A smart TV receives AirPlay without an Apple TV HDMI box in between. There is therefore no Apple TV-to-TV HDMI cable to isolate. Focus on the TV’s AirPlay receiving permission, the same-Wi-Fi requirement, VPN interference, software updates, and the TV’s mute and volume controls. If another device is connected to the TV for sound, include that receiver in the volume and mute check.

Use a controlled retest after every change

A controlled retest prevents a temporary improvement from being mistaken for a permanent fix. After each change, end the existing mirroring session, wait for the receiver to return to its normal screen, and start again from Control Center > Screen Mirroring. Record which of these outcomes occurs:

  • Receiver missing from the list: concentrate on power, Wi-Fi membership, proximity, updates, and VPN interference.
  • Receiver appears but refuses the session: check AirPlay receiving permission, Home app restrictions, and any password requirement.
  • Session starts with a black picture: determine whether the Apple TV home screen is also black; use the HDMI branch only when the entire Apple TV output is affected.
  • Picture works with no sound: raise volume and clear mute on the source, TV, and receiver.
  • Direct HDMI connection works but the routed connection does not: investigate the HDMI switch or AV receiver that was bypassed.

When to stop repeating the same fixes

Stop cycling through Wi-Fi and volume settings once the symptom clearly identifies another layer. Repeating Screen Mirroring attempts cannot repair a disconnected HDMI cable, and replacing an HDMI cable cannot grant AirPlay receiving permission. The isolation results give you the next support target: network or permission settings when the receiver cannot establish a session, audio controls when video is present but silent, and the HDMI chain when the Apple TV output is black.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the HDMI branch, keep the final successful arrangement as a reference: note the cable, TV input, port, and whether the switch or AV receiver was bypassed. For the AirPlay branch, note whether disconnecting a VPN or changing a Home restriction was required. These details make a later Apple, television, or receiver support request substantially more precise.

Source-backed guidance

Apple’s AirPlay troubleshooting article, published September 15, 2025, supplies the sequence of checking power and proximity, installing updates, using the same Wi-Fi, allowing AirPlay receiving, restarting devices, checking Home app restrictions, and reviewing password restrictions. The same guidance says to raise volume and clear mute on both the iOS device and the television or receiver when streamed video has no sound. Apple’s Apple TV black-screen guidance recommends reseating HDMI connections, trying another cable and TV port, selecting the correct input, bypassing a switch or AV receiver, and using an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1.
