If Windows says advapi32.dll is missing, do not download a loose copy from a DLL website. advapi32.dll is a protected Windows system component, so the supported repair is to restore Windows’ component store and system files with Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC tools.
Install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from an elevated Command Prompt. After DISM completes successfully, run sfc /scannow, wait for verification to reach 100%, restart again, and retry the application. If Windows cannot obtain repair files or the corruption persists, use a matching installation source and, ultimately, Windows recovery or reinstallation.

What advapi32.dll is and why the error matters
Advapi32.dll is part of Windows itself rather than a normal application plug-in. Programs use Windows libraries such as this one for operating-system functions, including security, registry, service and account-related operations. Because many applications may depend on the same protected file, a damaged or missing copy can stop one program or several programs from starting.
Messages can vary by Windows version and by the application that requests the file. Common wording includes “The program can’t start because advapi32.dll is missing from your computer,” “advapi32.dll was not found,” or an error that appears immediately after launching an executable. The wording does not prove that the file should be downloaded separately. It indicates that Windows’ own system-file repair path needs attention.

Microsoft’s supported guidance is to repair the Windows image first with DISM and then verify and replace protected files with System File Checker. Microsoft explains that “DISM provides the files required to repair your corrupted files.” That ordering matters: SFC may need a healthy component store as its source for a replacement.
Why downloading a loose DLL is risky
A third-party download can be the wrong Windows build, processor architecture or language. Even if the filename matches, its internal version may not match the rest of the operating system. A file obtained from an unverified repository can also be modified or bundled with malware. Copying it into a system folder may create a second problem while leaving the original component-store corruption unresolved.
The official repair sequence does not tell users to obtain advapi32.dll from a DLL repository. It uses Windows Update, the local component store or a matching Windows installation source. Those sources preserve the relationships among protected files, manifests and servicing packages. A random replacement does not.
Do not delete the existing file, rename system files, or copy a DLL from another Windows installation merely because the two computers look similar. A known-good copy is only considered in a narrowly controlled Microsoft troubleshooting path, and it must come from a computer running the same Windows version. Reinstallation may still be required when protected-file repair fails.
Check the situation before repairing
Confirm that the message is really about advapi32.dll
Write down the complete error text and the name of the application that displays it. Do not assume that a similarly named file, such as an application-specific DLL, is the same component. If the message appears only inside one program, note whether Windows itself, File Explorer and other programs continue to work.
Save work and use an administrator account
DISM and SFC change protected Windows files. Save open documents, close programs and sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts. If your account is not an administrator, Windows will ask for administrator credentials or prevent the commands from running.
Install pending updates first
Open Settings > Windows Update (or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on older Windows 10 layouts), select Check for updates, install the updates offered for your edition, and restart when Windows requests it. A current servicing stack and component store give DISM the best chance of finding matching repair files.
Run the supported DISM and SFC repair
1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Press the Windows key and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt in the results.
- Select Run as administrator and approve the User Account Control prompt.
The title bar should indicate an administrator session. If you open an ordinary Command Prompt, DISM or SFC may fail with an access or permission message.
2. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
At the administrator prompt, type the following command exactly and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
/Online tells DISM to service the Windows installation that is currently running. /Cleanup-image checks the component store, and /Restorehealth repairs corruption that DISM can identify. The operation can pause at a percentage for a while; do not close the window or power off the computer simply because the percentage does not change immediately.
Normally DISM obtains replacement components through Windows Update. Wait until it reports that the operation completed successfully, or until it displays a specific error code. Do not start SFC while DISM is still working. If DISM finishes with an error, use the failure section below before moving on.

When DISM has completed successfully, type:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and leave the window open. Microsoft’s instruction is to wait for the message “Verification 100% complete” before closing Command Prompt. SFC scans protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a valid version is available from the repaired component store.
SFC can report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, found corrupted files but could not repair some of them, or could not perform the requested operation. Record the exact result instead of guessing from the progress percentage. Each outcome leads to a different next step.
4. Restart and test
Close Command Prompt only after DISM and SFC have finished, restart Windows, and launch the application that produced the advapi32.dll message. A restart allows pending component servicing to complete and reloads the repaired system library. If the program now opens, do not replace the DLL manually; the system repair has already restored the protected component.

If DISM cannot find the repair files
DISM normally uses Windows Update. If Windows Update is unavailable, disabled, disconnected or unable to provide a matching component, DISM may report that source files could not be found. In that case, use a legitimate Windows installation source that matches the installed Windows version, edition and architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft documents this pattern:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the Windows folder on your matching installation source. The example path is not a universal location. It is a placeholder for a source you obtained from official Windows media or another legitimate, matching installation image.
/LimitAccess tells DISM not to contact Windows Update and to use the specified source. If the source belongs to a different Windows release, language, edition or architecture, DISM may reject it or install an unsuitable component. Verify the match before running the command. After a successful source-based repair, run sfc /scannow again and wait for 100-percent verification.
If SFC says it cannot repair some files
Read the result instead of copying a replacement immediately
An SFC message that some files could not be repaired means the scan found integrity problems but could not obtain or apply every replacement. Do not respond by downloading advapi32.dll from an unverified site. First make sure DISM completed successfully, then restart and run SFC one more time from an elevated Command Prompt. If the same result remains, inspect the servicing records.
Use the CBS log or Sfcdetails output
Microsoft describes reviewing the Component-Based Servicing (CBS) log or the Sfcdetails output to identify which files SFC could not repair. These records distinguish the affected component from unrelated scan entries. The log can show that the unresolved file is not advapi32.dll at all, which changes the repair decision.
Keep a copy of the relevant entries and the exact Windows edition and version. That information is useful if you need professional support or must decide whether recovery is safer than further manual replacement.
Understand the narrowly limited known-good-copy procedure
Microsoft describes using a known-good copy from a computer running the same Windows version in situations where a specific file remains damaged. This is not a recommendation to download a DLL or to copy files casually between computers. Administrative ownership and permissions must be handled correctly, and the source must genuinely match the target system. An incorrect copy can produce new version, servicing or security problems.
If the protected file cannot be repaired reliably, Microsoft warns that reinstallation may be required. Stop before manually replacing a system component when you cannot verify the source and the Windows version match.

| Method | Repair-file provenance | Installed apps and personal data | Internet requirement | System impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DISM followed by SFC | Windows component store and, normally, Windows Update | Designed to preserve them | Usually required for DISM’s normal source; not required when a valid local source is supplied | Low; repairs protected components |
| DISM with a matching installation source, then SFC | Legitimate Windows installation media matching the installed system | Designed to preserve them | Not required during the command when the source is local and /LimitAccess is used |
Low to moderate; still targeted system servicing |
| Windows recovery options | Windows recovery environment and its available repair sources | Depends on the selected recovery option; review the option’s effect before confirming | Depends on the recovery path | Moderate to high |
| Windows reinstallation from official media | Official Windows installation media | Depends on whether the chosen installation preserves files and apps; read the installer’s choices carefully | Media-dependent | Highest; use only after less disruptive repair paths fail |
This progression keeps the first attempt focused on Windows integrity and postpones changes that can affect the whole installation. A downloaded DLL is not a safer middle option: its provenance is weaker than every supported path in the table.

The same application still fails
Run the application again after the restart and note whether the message is identical. If Windows reports a different missing file, record that file separately; repairing one protected component does not establish that every application dependency is healthy. If the original advapi32.dll message returns, repeat the DISM result and SFC result review rather than replacing the file manually.
Several Windows components show errors
Multiple missing-system-file messages, repeated SFC failures or DISM errors indicate broader component-store or installation damage. Use a matching installation source, then Windows recovery options. If recovery cannot restore integrity, plan a Windows reinstallation from official media and back up important data before selecting an option that changes the installation.
The computer cannot boot normally
If the failure prevents normal startup, enter Windows recovery options and use the available system-repair path. The exact screens differ by Windows version and recovery configuration. Choose recovery or reinstallation only after understanding whether the selected option preserves personal files and installed applications.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using an ordinary Command Prompt: DISM and SFC require an elevated session for protected-file servicing.
- Running SFC before DISM: SFC may lack a healthy source for replacement files when the component store is damaged.
- Closing the window early: wait for DISM to finish and for SFC to display “Verification 100% complete.”
- Interrupting a stalled-looking percentage: servicing can take time; record an explicit error before treating the operation as failed.
- Mixing Windows sources: an installation image from another release, edition, language or architecture may not be suitable.
- Copying a DLL from another PC without verification: even a file from a working computer is not automatically compatible; Microsoft’s controlled procedure requires the same Windows version and correct ownership and permissions.
- Assuming a website’s download is official: the supported repair sources are Windows Update, the component store and matching Windows installation media.
When to stop troubleshooting manually
Stop and move to recovery planning when DISM cannot complete with either Windows Update or a verified matching source, when SFC repeatedly leaves protected files unrepaired, or when the system has multiple integrity failures. Back up personal files before any recovery or reinstallation that could alter the installation. Use official Windows media and read each recovery choice carefully; the least disruptive built-in repair should be exhausted before selecting a higher-impact option.
