The Steam listing for ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE requires 64-bit Windows 11, an SSD, a hardware-ray-tracing-capable graphics card, DirectX 12 with Shader Model 6.6 or newer, and 150 GB of free space. Steam’s target is only upscaled 1080p at 30 fps on Low for minimum hardware and upscaled 1080p at 60 fps on Medium for recommended hardware, with possible drops in intensive scenes. Those figures are not a guarantee of a fixed frame rate.
The game entered early access on September 29, 2026, appeared on Steam with an October 1 release date, and had a worldwide release date of October 2 on Bandai Namco’s site. Because this is an early-release support situation, the official crash and flight-stick notices describe issues being investigated rather than a universal, confirmed repair. Use the checks below to identify the failure, collect useful evidence, and report unresolved problems accurately.

Check whether your PC meets the published requirements
Before changing settings, compare your system with the current store listing for the edition you own. A machine can launch while still being below the intended target, and a compliant machine can still experience a software fault. Treat the requirements as eligibility information, not as a promise of 60 fps.

| Storage | SSD and 150 GB available space on Steam | |
| Steam estimate | 1920×1080 upscaled at 30 fps, Low | 1920×1080 upscaled at 60 fps, Medium |
Steam also warns that frame rate may fall in graphics-intensive scenes. The Bandai Namco European store page lists 125 GB instead of Steam’s 150 GB. Use the requirement shown by the storefront and build you are actually installing, and leave additional room for updates rather than filling the drive to its limit. The difference is a storefront-listing discrepancy, not proof that either number is a performance setting.

Fast eligibility checklist
- Press Win + R, enter
winver, and confirm that Windows 11 is installed and fully updated. - Check your processor, installed RAM, and GPU in Settings > System > About and Task Manager > Performance.
- Run
dxdiagand confirm DirectX 12. Your graphics hardware must support Shader Model 6.6 and hardware ray tracing. - Confirm the game is installed on an SSD with at least the storefront’s stated free space. If the drive is nearly full, make room before troubleshooting installation or update failures.
- Compare the exact GPU model and memory capacity, not just the brand name. An older card with a similar-sounding product name may not provide the required ray-tracing or Shader Model support.
The minimum and recommended rows describe two different targets. Minimum hardware is associated with upscaled 1920×1080 at 30 fps on Low; recommended hardware is associated with upscaled 1920×1080 at 60 fps on Medium. Neither row promises native 1080p, a locked frame rate in every scene, or a high-refresh-rate experience.
Diagnose performance drops before trying fixes
Performance trouble means uneven frame pacing, stutter, or a frame rate below your target; it is different from a crash to desktop or an input device that is not detected. The official targets are modest and explicitly allow dips in demanding scenes.
What the independent review actually observed
PC Gamer reported mostly stable 1440p play on a system with a Radeon RX 6600, Ryzen 7 7700X, and 32 GB of DDR5 memory. The reviewer still saw occasional hitching in first-person cutscenes and frame rates below 60 fps during especially intense scenes. Light stick-input ghosting appeared after a frame-rate dip in two playthroughs. This is one reviewer’s configuration, not a benchmark for every PC, and it does not prove that every stutter produces an input fault.
Use a controlled settings test
- Record the resolution, upscaling mode, quality preset, frame-rate limit, and whether ray-traced features are enabled.
- Reproduce the problem in the same mission or scene. Note whether it occurs during gameplay, a cutscene, loading, or a menu. A repeatable location is much more useful than a general statement that the game feels slow.
- Lower one demanding setting at a time and repeat the same scene. A change that improves frame pacing identifies a load-related symptom; it does not prove a permanent game fix.
- Watch GPU utilization, VRAM, system memory, temperatures, and clock speeds with your normal monitoring software. Save the readings when the dip occurs. A GPU running at high utilization points to a different investigation than a sudden clock drop or exhausted memory.
- Test with overlays, recording tools, RGB utilities, and other background applications closed one at a time. If the symptom disappears, restore programs individually to identify a conflict.
- Compare a busy combat sequence with a quiet menu or mission briefing. If only intense scenes dip, that matches Steam’s warning more closely than a universal frame-rate failure.
- Keep a before-and-after note for every change. If several settings change at once, you cannot tell which variable affected the result.
Updating Windows and the graphics driver, verifying the installation through your storefront, and rebooting after updates are sensible general PC diagnostics. The dated official notices do not identify a particular driver, launch option, configuration-file edit, memory change, or mod as a confirmed Ace Combat 8 performance fix, so do not present any of those as guaranteed remedies.
How to interpret a graphics setting result
If reducing resolution or upscaling quality raises frame rate, the symptom is consistent with GPU workload. If lowering textures helps only when video memory is full, note the VRAM reading rather than assuming the game is defective. If no setting changes frame pacing and the hitch happens at the same cutscene every time, record that scene and timing for support. A compliant PC can still have a game-specific hitch, while a below-spec PC can have several independent bottlenecks.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
An SSD is a published requirement, but moving an already compliant installation from one SSD to another is not established as a cure for crashes or stutter. Likewise, buying a faster processor or graphics card may change performance headroom, but the official material does not promise that an upgrade resolves a software fault.
Why Ace Combat 8 keeps crashing on PC
The ACE COMBAT Team said in its October 2, 2026 PC Crash Report Thread: “We are actively working to resolve the game crashes issues that some of our players are currently experiencing.” That announcement confirms that crashes were being investigated at that date. It does not name a root cause or state that a specific patch, driver, command, or hardware upgrade resolves them.

- Write down exactly what happened: crash during launch, loading, a mission, a cutscene, pause menu, or exit.
- Record the trigger and whether the crash is repeatable. Include any displayed error code or message, using its exact spelling.
- List your Windows version and other system-software versions, plus CPU, GPU, RAM, storage type, and monitor configuration.
- List other applications running at the time, including overlays, capture tools, peripheral software, and security utilities.
- Note what you already tried and whether the result changed after a reboot, installation verification, driver update, or settings change.
- Include the game edition and storefront when relevant, since the Steam and Bandai Namco listings do not show identical storage figures.
Submit those details in the official crash-report channel rather than replacing evidence with a speculative fix. The developer specifically requested the crash description and trigger, error code, Windows and system-software versions, PC specifications, and other running applications where possible.
A useful crash-report template
Write the report as a short timeline: “The game launched at [time], loaded [mission or menu], then closed when [action]. It happened [number] times. The displayed code was [exact code]. Windows was [version], the PC used [CPU, GPU, RAM], and these applications were open: [list]. I tested [one change at a time] and the result was [result].” This format gives the team a reproducible trigger without claiming a cause you have not demonstrated.
Checks that distinguish a game crash from a system problem
- If only this game closes while other demanding software remains stable, preserve the game’s error details and reproduction steps.
- If Windows restarts, shows a blue screen, or the GPU driver resets, investigate system stability separately; that symptom is broader than an application crash.
- If the crash disappears when a single overlay or background utility is disabled, document that correlation instead of claiming the utility is a confirmed cause.
- If the PC is below the OS, GPU, ray-tracing, API, SSD, or storage requirements, bring it into compliance before interpreting every failure as a defect.
- If the crash occurs only after changing a peripheral or remapping layer, repeat the test with that device disconnected and record both outcomes.
Check for newer official announcements before assuming the October 2 status is still current. Early-release notices can be superseded by patches, and the dated statement does not establish the game’s status at every later point.

Controller not working: gamepad troubleshooting
Steam labels Ace Combat 8 as having Full Controller Support. That label indicates intended controller support in the Steam build, but it does not guarantee identical behavior for every controller, wireless mode, remapping layer, or third-party utility. PC Gamer’s reviewer used an Xbox Wireless Controller successfully throughout a review; that is a single observation, not a compatibility matrix.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Test the connection in a repeatable order
- Close the game and connect the controller directly by USB, bypassing hubs and wireless adapters for the first test.
- Confirm Windows sees button and stick movement in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices or the controller’s own diagnostic panel.
- Disconnect other gamepads, wheels, flight controls, virtual controllers, and remapping programs so the game has one obvious input device.
- Launch the game and test in a menu before entering a mission. Record whether buttons work but analog axes do not, or whether the device is absent entirely.
- Reconnect wirelessly only after the wired test works. If the fault returns, the connection mode or its software layer is the variable to report.
- Restart the game after changing the active controller. Some games enumerate devices at launch, so changing hardware mid-session can produce a misleading result; treat this as a diagnostic step, not a confirmed title-specific rule.
- Test with any controller remapping application disabled, then enable it again only if the direct connection works. Record the application and profile used.
Do not buy a new controller as a crash remedy. A conventional PC gamepad is a reasonable choice when your existing device is undetected or unreliable, but the available evidence does not show that a particular model fixes application crashes or guarantees every remapping feature. Steam’s support label and the reviewer’s Xbox Wireless Controller result make a standard gamepad the less uncertain starting point, not a guaranteed solution.
When input seems delayed or moves by itself
First compare the behavior with the frame-rate graph. The independent review described light stick-input ghosting after a frame-rate dip, so a momentary performance problem can look like an input problem. If the controller behaves normally in menus and other games but drifts only during a severe in-game hitch, capture the frame-time and input symptoms together. If the axis moves while frame pacing is normal, test another connection mode and another controller before filing the report.
Describe the exact axis, direction, and duration: for example, “the pitch axis continued upward for half a second after the stick returned to center.” Also state whether the same movement appears in Windows’ controller test. That distinction helps separate a physical or connection issue from an in-game input symptom.
Does Ace Combat 8 support HOTAS or a flight stick?
The developer issued a specific limitation notice on September 30, 2026: “At this time, some of the configuration options available for certain devices in Ace Combat 7 are not available in Ace Combat 8.” The team said it was reviewing the situation and exploring improvements.

This means a flight stick or HOTAS may be detected while still lacking configuration options you used in Ace Combat 7. The notice does not identify affected models, publish a complete compatibility table, or confirm that purchasing a particular device solves the limitation. Do not infer compatibility from a device working in Ace Combat 7, and do not treat a retailer’s generic PC label as confirmation of every in-game binding.
Gamepad versus flight stick
| Consideration | Gamepad | Flight stick/HOTAS |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Conventional pick-up-and-play controls | Readers who specifically want dedicated flight controls |
| Official information | Steam lists Full Controller Support | Some Ace Combat 7 configuration options were unavailable in Ace Combat 8 as of September 30, 2026 |
| Configuration risk | Usually limited to connection, detection, and remapping layers | Device-specific bindings and missing options may require compromises |
| Confirmed device list | No complete model-by-model list was provided | No complete model-by-model list was provided |
| Purchase decision | Reasonable if you already own one or want conventional controls | Buy only for the flight-control experience, not as a documented fix for crashes or performance |
If you already own a flight stick, test it before buying anything else. Connect only that device, check which axes and buttons the game exposes, and record the missing binding options. If you need a dependable control setup immediately, a standard gamepad has the clearer official support signal, while a HOTAS purchase remains a personal choice rather than a documented fix. No specific model can be recommended from the September 30 notice because it names neither supported nor unsupported devices.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fix Ace Combat 8 performance issues on PC?
First compare your PC with Steam’s requirements, including Windows 11, DirectX 12 with Shader Model 6.6, hardware ray tracing, an SSD, and 150 GB available space. Then reproduce the same scene while changing one graphics setting at a time. Steam’s estimates are upscaled 1080p at 30 fps on Low for minimum hardware and 60 fps on Medium for recommended hardware, with possible dips in intensive scenes.
Why does Ace Combat 8 keep crashing?
The ACE COMBAT Team said on October 2, 2026 that it was actively working on crashes affecting some players, but it did not publish a root cause or guaranteed fix. Record the trigger, exact error code, Windows and system-software versions, PC specifications, and other running applications, then submit those details through the official crash-report channel.
Why is my controller not working in Ace Combat 8?
Steam lists Full Controller Support, but behavior can differ by device, wireless mode, remapping layer, and utility. Test a direct USB connection, confirm Windows detects the controller, disconnect other input devices, close remapping software, and restart the game before testing again. An Xbox Wireless Controller worked for one PC Gamer reviewer, but that is not a complete compatibility guarantee.

Does Ace Combat 8 support HOTAS or a flight stick?
The developer acknowledged on September 30, 2026 that some configuration options available for certain devices in Ace Combat 7 were not available in Ace Combat 8 and said improvements were under review. A flight stick may be detected while still lacking desired bindings. No complete model list or guaranteed HOTAS recommendation was published.
Is 30 fps guaranteed on minimum PC hardware?
No. Steam associates minimum hardware with upscaled 1920×1080 at 30 fps on Low and warns that frame rate may drop in graphics-intensive scenes. It is an estimate, not a locked-frame-rate promise.
How much storage does the PC version need?
Steam lists an SSD and 150 GB of available space. Bandai Namco’s European store page lists 125 GB, so check the storefront for your edition and leave additional room for updates. The discrepancy should not be treated as a performance fix.
Should I buy a new controller, SSD, or HOTAS to solve a crash?
No purchase is established as a crash remedy. A standard gamepad may be a practical input choice, an SSD is a published requirement, and a HOTAS is an optional control style, but the official notices do not say that buying any of them repairs application crashes.
Could a frame-rate dip be mistaken for controller drift?
It can look that way. PC Gamer reported light stick-input ghosting after a frame-rate dip in two playthroughs. Compare the input symptom with frame-time data, test the controller in menus and Windows, and report whether the movement occurs only during a hitch or also when frame pacing is normal.
The Bottom Line
Use Steam’s requirements as the starting gate, not a performance promise. Separate frame-time dips, application crashes, gamepad detection, and missing flight-stick bindings; change one variable at a time; and keep a precise record of what happens. The ACE COMBAT Team’s September 30 flight-stick notice and October 2 crash thread describe issues under review, so check newer official updates before treating any dated status as current.
