If Windows 10 can see an internal NTFS drive in Disk Management but File Explorer says Access is denied, the usual cause is ownership or permissions, not a dead disk. Check the disk’s status and drive letter first, then repair ownership and grant your account the minimum access it needs. Do not format, initialize, delete partitions, or run diskpart clean while the files matter.
Protect the files before troubleshooting
An access-denied message can tempt you to reformat a drive that is otherwise healthy. Stop before making any destructive change if the volume contains photographs, documents, project files, backups, or anything you cannot replace.

- Do not choose Format, Delete Volume, or Initialize Disk merely because Explorer cannot open the drive.
- Do not run DiskPart’s
cleancommand on a disk that contains data you want to keep. - Do not repeatedly accept prompts that offer to erase or re-create the volume.
- If the files are valuable and the disk is making unusual noises, disconnect it and address the hardware issue before repeated troubleshooting attempts.
Microsoft Support states: “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” Windows Central likewise warns that DiskPart’s clean command erases the selected disk and that selecting the wrong disk cannot be undone.

What “Access is denied” means
Windows separates a disk’s physical and logical configuration from the permissions on its files. Disk Management can show a healthy volume even when the account you are using is not allowed to read it. Traditional hard-disk data is protected by NTFS access-control lists (ACLs), and Microsoft explains that access normally requires elevated administrative permission.

Ownership and permissions are related but different. The owner controls who can change the ACL; the ACL determines which accounts can read, write, modify, or take other actions. Taking ownership therefore may be necessary but may not, by itself, give your everyday account permission to open every file.
The distinction is useful after a Windows reinstall. Files on a secondary disk can still be associated with the account identity from the previous installation. Your new installation may have an administrator with the same name but a different security identity, so Explorer refuses access until ownership and an appropriate ACL are restored.
Use Disk Management to choose the correct repair
Start with configuration, not permissions. Open Disk Management by right-clicking Start, searching for Disk Management, and selecting Create and format hard disk partitions. You can also press Win+R, enter diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Microsoft says the Disk Management interface works the same way in Windows 10 and Windows 11.
| What Disk Management shows | Likely meaning | Safe next move |
|---|---|---|
| Online, a normal partition, and a drive letter | The volume is mounted. An Explorer denial points primarily to NTFS ownership or ACLs. | Repair ownership and permissions on the secondary data volume. |
| Online, but no drive letter | The partition exists but has no normal Explorer path. | Use Change Drive Letter and Paths and assign an unused letter. |
| Offline | Windows has not mounted the disk for normal use. | Check the disk identity and bring it online only after confirming it is the intended disk. |
| Not initialized or unallocated | Windows does not see a usable partition configuration. | If the disk contains needed data, stop. Do not initialize or create a volume; those operations can destroy the existing layout. |
| Foreign dynamic disk | The dynamic-disk configuration was created in another Windows installation. | Back up first if possible, then use the import option intended to preserve the existing configuration. |
| Not listed at all | This is not an ordinary NTFS permission problem. | Check Device Manager, firmware or BIOS detection, cabling, power, and storage drivers. |
A drive must be online, initialized, partitioned, and assigned a letter (or mounted as a folder) to appear normally in File Explorer. Do not change ACLs until these basic conditions are satisfied.

Restore a missing drive letter
If Disk Management displays a normal partition without a letter, adding one is a data-preserving change.
- In the lower pane of Disk Management, right-click the affected partition.
- Select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
- Select Add if no letter is present, or Change if an existing assignment is wrong.
- Choose an unused letter and select OK, then confirm the warning.
- Close and reopen File Explorer and test the new path.
Do not remove a letter from a volume that Windows or an application is actively using. If the volume is intentionally mounted as a folder instead, use that mount point rather than assigning a second path without understanding the layout.
Take ownership and grant access on a secondary data drive
Use this procedure for a secondary data volume or a specific data folder. It is not a blanket repair for the active Windows installation.

Open the advanced security settings
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- In File Explorer, right-click the affected drive or the particular folder and select Properties.
- Open the Security tab and select Advanced.
- Inspect the Owner field before changing anything. This confirms that you are working on the intended volume.
Change the owner carefully
- Next to the owner name, select Change.
- Enter the current administrator account, or the local Administrators group when that is the appropriate owner for the data volume.
- Use Check Names if available, confirm the resolved identity, and select OK.
- If you need the change to reach existing files and subfolders, select the option to replace the owner on contained objects. Apply that scope only when you understand that it will affect the whole selected tree.
- Apply the change and wait. A large disk can take time because Windows must process many files.
Ownership is not the same as read permission. If Explorer still refuses access, remain in Advanced Security Settings and add the account that should use the files.

Grant the minimum permission required
- Select Add, then Select a principal.
- Enter the everyday Windows account that needs access and confirm it.
- Choose only the required permission level. Read is appropriate for viewing and copying; Modify is appropriate when the user must create, edit, and delete data. Avoid Full control unless there is a specific reason.
- Choose whether the entry applies to the folder, its subfolders, its files, or the combination you actually need. Inheritance is useful for a normal data tree, but broad inheritance can affect folders that were meant to remain restricted.
- Apply the change, close every Properties dialog, and reopen File Explorer.
Test with a small, noncritical file: open it, copy it to another location, and, if the account is supposed to modify data, create and delete a temporary test file. A successful test confirms the ACL change without requiring you to alter the entire disk again.
Why a reinstall often causes this symptom
Windows accounts are represented internally by security identifiers, not just by the visible account name. Reinstalling Windows creates new account identifiers. A data disk retained from the previous installation can therefore list an owner that no longer exists in the new installation. Assigning the current administrator or Administrators group as owner, then granting the intended account read or modify access, addresses that mismatch without reformatting the disk.
Do not reset permissions on the Windows system volume blindly
The active C: volume and Windows system folders use carefully designed ACLs. A blanket recursive ownership or permission reset can remove protections or prevent services, updates, and Windows components from running. The safer boundary is a secondary data volume or a known data folder. If the denial involves C:Windows, C:Program Files, or another operating-system directory, stop and use a documented recovery procedure for the specific incident instead of applying the data-drive steps to the whole system.
If the disk is missing from Disk Management
When the disk is absent from Disk Management, changing NTFS permissions cannot help because Windows has not presented a usable volume to the file system.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives and identify the affected device by its model.
- If it is listed but malfunctioning, right-click that disk, choose Uninstall device, and restart Windows. Windows 10 can reinstall the driver during startup.
- If the problem remains, use the manufacturer’s supported driver or storage-controller update rather than a random driver package.
Verify the disk’s appearance in firmware or BIOS, especially on a desktop. Check SATA or power connections, reseat cables only when the computer is powered down, and use the manufacturer’s diagnostics where available. These checks address device, connection, controller, and driver problems; they are a different branch from an Explorer permission denial.
Handle a foreign dynamic disk conservatively
Disk Management may label a dynamic disk as Foreign when it was created under another Windows installation. If the data matters, make a backup if possible before changing its state. The Import Foreign Disks action is intended to bring the existing dynamic-disk configuration into the current installation rather than creating a new empty volume. Do not delete the disk, convert it, or initialize it as a shortcut around the label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When initialization and formatting are appropriate
Use these operations only when the disk is intentionally blank or every needed file is already backed up and verified elsewhere. Creating a volume does not repair an access-control problem; it replaces the old volume structure.

DiskPart is a last resort for a disposable disk
DiskPart provides direct control over disks and is useful only when you have deliberately decided that the selected disk may be erased. Windows Central warns that clean removes everything on the selected disk and that a wrong selection is irreversible.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Enter
diskpart. - Enter
list diskand compare each disk number with the physical size and model shown in Disk Management. - Enter
select disk N, replacingNwith the verified number. Recheck the selection. - Only for a deliberately disposable disk, enter
clean. - Create and format a new partition with
create partition primary, format fs=ntfs quick, andassign. - Enter
exit, then verify the resulting volume in Disk Management and File Explorer.
Never substitute this sequence for ownership repair on a data-bearing drive. DiskPart cannot recover files that its destructive commands have removed.
Match the symptom to the branch
| Symptom | Correct branch | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| The drive is visible, has a letter, and Explorer says Access is denied. | Inspect ownership and grant the intended account the minimum ACL on the secondary data volume. | Formatting or running clean. |
| The drive is visible but has no letter. | Add an unused letter through Change Drive Letter and Paths. | Changing ownership before the volume is mounted. |
| The disk is Offline. | Confirm the disk identity and address its offline state in Disk Management. | Initializing it without checking for existing data. |
| The disk is Not initialized or shows no usable partition and the files matter. | Stop destructive operations and preserve the disk’s current state. | Initialize, create a volume, or format. |
| The disk is absent from Disk Management. | Use Device Manager, firmware, connection, and driver checks. | Changing NTFS ACLs. |
| The disk is Foreign. | Back up if possible and use the import operation designed for foreign dynamic disks. | Deleting or converting the disk as a first step. |
| Only one protected folder denies access. | Change ownership and permissions on that folder, with a deliberately limited scope. | Resetting permissions on the entire system drive. |
What to do after access is restored
Once the drive opens, copy irreplaceable files to a second location. Check that important folders open after a restart and that the account can perform only the actions it needs. If you changed ownership on a broad data tree, review the advanced security entries later and remove permissions that are no longer justified.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for the operating system. The permission and Disk Management steps above still describe how Windows 10 behaves, but a working drive does not change the operating system’s unsupported status. Plan a supported Windows release or another maintained platform after your files are safe.
