Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Most “Access Denied” messages on an external drive in Windows 10 come from an NTFS ownership or permissions mismatch, particularly when the disk was used with another Windows installation. Verify the drive letter first, then use an elevated Command Prompt to take ownership and grant your account access. Do not format or initialize the disk until you have ruled out permissions and protected any data you need.
What “Access Denied” means
Windows uses the NTFS file system’s ownership information and access-control lists (ACLs) to decide which accounts can read, write, or modify files. An external disk moved from another computer can still contain permissions tied to the old installation’s user and security identifiers. Your current account may therefore see the drive in File Explorer but be refused when it opens the root, a folder, or individual files.

The scope of the failure matters. If every folder on the volume is denied, an ownership or ACL problem is likely. If only one application is denied while File Explorer works, Windows file-system privacy settings or an organizational policy may be responsible. If the disk disappears, reports an incorrect capacity, disconnects, clicks, or is extremely slow, treat the issue as a possible hardware failure rather than repeatedly changing permissions.

Protect the data before changing anything
- Do not format, initialize, delete partitions, or create a new volume if the drive contains files you need. Those operations can destroy the remaining directory information.
- Do not apply ownership commands to the Windows system drive simply because they work on an external disk. Use the verified external-drive letter only.
- If the drive is readable on another computer, copy irreplaceable files before attempting repairs.
- Stop and consider professional data recovery if the disk makes repeated clicking sounds, repeatedly disconnects, shows a wrong capacity, or fails consistently on multiple computers.
Step 1: Confirm the disk, partition, file system, and drive letter
- Press the Windows key and search for Create and format hard disk partitions.
- Open Disk Management and identify the external disk by its size and connection. Do not rely only on position in the list.
- Check the affected partition’s drive letter, file-system label (such as NTFS or exFAT), and status. In the commands below, replace
E:with that exact letter. - If the partition has no letter, right-click it, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, select Add or Change, and assign an unused letter. Do not format the volume when prompted.
Disk Management can initialize disks, create and format volumes, change letters, and extend or shrink partitions. Those capabilities are useful for an empty replacement disk, not for recovering files from a volume that is currently inaccessible.

Step 2: Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Search Windows for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. A repair command that changes ownership or ACLs may fail in a non-elevated window.
Keep the drive letter from Disk Management visible or write it down. Using a letter that belongs to another disk can modify the wrong data.
Step 3: Take ownership of the drive or affected folder
Microsoft describes takeown as a way for an administrator to recover access to a file that was denied by making the administrator the owner. In the elevated Command Prompt, run:

takeown /f E: /r /d y
/f E:identifies the root of the external volume. For a narrower change, substitute a specific top-level folder, such asE:Projects./rprocesses files and subfolders recursively./d ysupplies “Yes” as the default response when Windows cannot list or read an object.
Large drives can take time. Read the output for failures instead of assuming that every object changed. Taking ownership does not automatically give your account every permission; the next step may still be required.

Granting full control recursively to an entire volume is broad. If only one folder is blocked, target that folder instead of the root. Examine every error line; a command that finishes at the prompt is not proof that all objects were changed.

Step 5: Check for logical file-system errors
If ownership and ACLs are not the cause, check the volume’s metadata. In the elevated Command Prompt, start with a read-only examination:

- Recovers Data from Lost Partitions In case one or more drive partitions are not visible under ‘Connected Drives,’ the ‘Can’t Find Drive’ option can help users locate inaccessible, missing, and deleted drive partition(s). Once located, users can select and run a deep scan on the found partition(s) to recover the lost data.
chkdsk E:
Microsoft defines chkdsk as checking a volume’s file system and metadata for logical and physical errors. Repair switches change data and should be used only after you have preserved important files and confirmed the drive letter:
| Command | Purpose and caution |
|---|---|
chkdsk E: /f |
Fixes logical file-system errors. Requires administrator privileges. |
chkdsk E: /r |
Locates bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information while fixing errors. It can take a long time, especially on a large hard-disk drive. |
chkdsk E: /x |
Dismounts the volume first, then checks it. Use only when no application is using the drive. |
chkdsk E: /b |
Clears the bad-cluster list and rescans the volume; use only when its requirements match your situation. |
Do not interrupt a repair casually. If the disk is making mechanical noises, repeatedly disconnecting, or becoming slower during reads, stop and seek data-recovery advice instead of repeatedly running repair passes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the denial affects only one application
Test the same file in File Explorer. If Explorer can open it but a single app cannot, the drive-wide ACL may be fine. Review Windows file-system privacy controls for that application and any company or school policy that limits removable-media access. Security software, sandboxing, or an app running under a different account can also create an application-specific denial. Avoid changing the whole volume’s ownership when the symptom is limited to one program.
NTFS, exFAT, and what the file system changes
NTFS is the format on which Windows ownership and detailed ACLs normally apply. An external disk formatted as exFAT or another file system may not carry the same Windows ACL model. If Disk Management reports a non-NTFS format, an NTFS ownership fix may not explain the denial; investigate the application, encryption, sharing setup, or the device’s own access rules instead. Never reformat merely to obtain NTFS while files are still needed.
Use the remedy that matches the symptom
| Observed condition | Most appropriate next action | Do not do first |
|---|---|---|
| Drive is visible, has a stable letter, and every folder says Access Denied | Verify the letter, then use takeown followed by a targeted icacls grant. |
Format or initialize the volume. |
| Only one folder or application is blocked | Target that folder or inspect the application’s privacy and policy settings. | Grant full control recursively to every volume. |
| Drive letter or volume state is missing or wrong | Use Disk Management to identify the partition and assign an unused letter without formatting. | Choose a partition by position alone. |
| File-system errors are reported and the disk is stable | Back up what you can, run chkdsk E:, and add repair switches only when appropriate. |
Start with the most aggressive repair switch. |
| Clicking, wrong capacity, repeated disconnects, or failure on several computers | Stop repeated repairs and consider professional data recovery. | Keep cycling ownership and repair commands. |
After access is restored
- Copy irreplaceable material to a second storage location. A USB external hard drive can serve as a backup or replacement destination, but buying another drive does not repair the inaccessible one.
- Use a clear folder structure and avoid moving a disk between accounts without documenting who owns the data.
- Eject the drive from Windows before unplugging it to reduce the chance of incomplete writes.
- Keep at least one backup disconnected from the computer when it is not being updated.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The commands above remain Windows 10 tools, but unsupported systems no longer receive normal security updates. If the computer is eligible, plan a supported Windows upgrade; otherwise, limit exposure and maintain tested backups while resolving the drive problem.
