First identify what is out of sync: if the sound does not match the picture, it is an audio/video sync problem; if both arrive late compared with a radio broadcast or real-world event, it is live-stream latency. Those need different fixes. For a viewer, start by testing another connection or device. For a creator, compare reports from viewers and inspect the encoder, source, stream health, and upload connection.
Identify which kind of delay you have
YouTube uses “live latency” for the time between an event being captured by a camera or encoder and its appearance for a viewer. That is different from audio and picture being misaligned within the stream. A radio-style stream with a static image or visualizer can make the distinction less obvious: ask whether the audio is late relative to the image, or whether the entire program is behind a separate broadcast or event. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance covers latency; its upload troubleshooting guidance covers mismatched tracks in uploaded videos.

- Sound and picture disagree: the mismatch may be in the source file, encoder, or playback path.
- Sound and picture match, but both are late: this is a live-latency or playback-delay question, not necessarily an audio/video sync fault.
If you are watching the stream
Change one variable at a time. That helps distinguish a local playback fault from a problem shared by the stream.

- Set playback quality manually. If the YouTube player offers a quality control, select a different available quality and see whether playback steadies or the mismatch changes.
- Restart playback and update. Close and reopen the YouTube app or browser, restart the device, and install any available app or system updates.
- Clear the app cache where available. On applicable mobile devices, use the device’s app settings to clear the YouTube app cache.
- Try another supported device. If the same stream works elsewhere, investigate the original device. If multiple streaming services also misbehave on that device, consult its manufacturer’s support.
These are YouTube’s suggested checks for lagging, buffering, and playback problems. A fault that follows the stream across independent devices and connections is less likely to be isolated to one viewer’s setup. See YouTube’s playback troubleshooting steps.

If the whole live stream is behind
Some delay is inherent in live delivery. Lower latency reduces the buffer between capture and playback, which can make interaction feel more immediate but can also make playback more vulnerable to buffering. YouTube puts it plainly: “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” Network congestion and other factors can delay a stream even when a connection otherwise seems good. YouTube explains the trade-off in its live-stream settings guidance.
A radio program that does not depend on real-time audience interaction generally has less reason to prioritize ultra-low latency. If only a particular viewer is behind, check their connection and device before changing creator settings. If many viewers report a similar delay, the creator should investigate the stream path.

YouTube TV broadcast delay is context-specific
YouTube’s TV instructions include a Broadcast Delay setting with “Decrease” and “Default” choices. Default favors fewer playback interruptions; decreasing the delay reduces the buffer and may increase interruptions. This control applies to the relevant YouTube TV context, not universally to every YouTube live stream, so do not assume it is available in every app or on every device. Check YouTube’s instructions for the viewer’s specific playback context.
If you run the live stream
Use the number and distribution of complaints to choose where to look. YouTube says a problem reported by one viewer is likely to be on that viewer’s computer or internet connection. Reports from many viewers on one shared connection point toward that network; reports from viewers on different connections justify checking the creator’s encoder and audio/video sources. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide describes this distinction.

Check the signal before it reaches YouTube
- Look at the encoder output or live preview. If the sound and image are already misaligned there, focus on the source routing or encoder rather than viewer playback settings.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s CPU load for warnings or signs of strain.
- Check a local recording or archive, if available. It can show whether the mismatch exists before YouTube delivery.
- Keep the encoder software current.
Check the outbound connection and preparation
If the encoder output looks healthy but viewers still report trouble, check the connection carrying the stream to YouTube and contact the internet service provider if that connection appears to be the problem. YouTube recommends having upload capacity for the stream’s total bitrate with 20% bandwidth room. That is preparation guidance, not a guarantee against delay or a diagnosis of any individual sync fault. Test under representative conditions, including audio and the kind of movement planned for the broadcast, and monitor audio/video quality and stream health during the event. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.
If the problem is in an uploaded video
If you are watching a recorded upload rather than a live broadcast, inspect the file’s audio and video tracks. YouTube advises checking that the tracks have the same duration; if they do not, correct them in video-editing software before uploading again. A viewer’s playback-delay control cannot repair a mismatch already present in the uploaded source. Follow YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance.
