If the replay itself is silent, use OBS’s audio meters to find where sound stops reaching the stream: no meter movement points to capture or routing; meter movement points to mute, level, or output-track settings. Make a short local recording and listen to it before streaming again.
Confirm where the audio is missing
- Rule out playback on your device. Check the YouTube player’s speaker and mute controls, device volume, selected audio output, and browser or app. Try another device, or ask another viewer to check the replay. If sound works elsewhere, the stream recording may be fine and the problem is local playback.
- Check whether the replay itself is silent. Listen on more than one device. If the YouTube replay is silent for everyone, focus on the audio path that produced the stream rather than the player.
- Identify which audio is missing. If the microphone is audible but the game is not, investigate game capture, game-specific routing, console output, or the capture card. If the microphone, game, and other sources are all silent, start with OBS’s selected sources and output configuration.
“Rerun” can mean an archived livestream replay or a video being streamed again. These capture checks apply when the produced stream lacks audio; YouTube’s archive-duration guidance applies specifically to live-stream archives.
Use OBS’s audio meter to locate the break
While game sound is actively playing, watch the meter for the relevant audio source in OBS’s mixer. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide explains the mixer controls and recommends recording a session in the normal configuration and listening to the resulting file before going live.
- No meter movement: The sound is not reaching that OBS source. Check which source is meant to capture the game, whether the game or console is sending audio to the expected output, and whether operating-system routing or capture-device input is correct.
- Meter movement: Check that the source is not muted and its fader is raised. Then confirm that the source is assigned to the output track used by your stream or recording. The correct track depends on your configuration; do not assume a particular track number.
After changing a setting, play sound and watch the meter again. Then make a short recording and listen to the file. A meter moving in OBS is useful evidence, but the recording confirms that audio made it through the configured output.

Fix PC game capture on Windows
OBS’s Application Audio Capture Guide describes per-application capture for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. The guide says OBS Studio 30.1 added audio capture to Game Capture and Window Capture sources.
- Check the game source. In OBS, open the properties for the relevant Game Capture or Window Capture source. If your installed version offers it, enable “Capture Audio (BETA).” The label and availability can vary by version.
- Alternatively, add an application source. Add an Application Audio Capture source and select the game or app window, following the guide for your OBS version.
- Avoid capturing the same sound twice. OBS cautions that when using Application Audio Capture sources, Desktop Audio should be disabled to avoid echo. Check your mixer after changing sources.
- Use a virtual audio cable only if needed. For an app that is incompatible with Application Audio Capture, OBS describes routing its sound through a virtual audio cable and adding that cable as an Audio Input Capture source. This is an advanced routing workaround, not a routine hardware purchase requirement.
Fix desktop or app audio capture on macOS
The capture method depends on both OBS and macOS versions. OBS’s macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide describes these version-specific options:

- With OBS Studio 30 and macOS 13 (Ventura) or later, use the macOS Audio Capture source for desktop or selected application audio; the macOS Screen Capture Source can also capture audio.
- With OBS Studio 28 or 29 on macOS 13 or later, the guide points to the Screen Capture Source.
- For older macOS versions, the guide says additional software is required for desktop-audio capture.
Because the guide dates from 2022, check the current instructions for the OBS and macOS versions installed on your Mac rather than assuming an older menu or feature label is unchanged.
Check console and capture-card audio
If a console is connected through a capture card, confirm both the console’s audio format and the capture card’s selected input. The supported format depends on the specific hardware and console generation. For Elgato devices, the company’s no-game-sound troubleshooting guide says its capture devices take stereo (2.0) PCM and do not support bitstream formats such as Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, or Dolby Atmos.

- PlayStation: On the PlayStation configurations covered by Elgato’s guide, set audio output to Linear PCM.
- Xbox: On the Xbox configuration covered by the guide, use stereo or uncompressed output.
- Nintendo Switch: If Automatic does not work, Elgato recommends Stereo; Surround may prevent some sounds from being captured correctly.
- Headphones: On some PlayStation and Switch setups, headphones connected to the controller or console’s headphone port can prevent game audio from being sent over HDMI. Check the guide for your console and device.
- OBS device selection: Elgato says Windows may capture its device automatically when it is added to OBS, while on macOS you may need to add an Audio Input Capture source and select the capture device.
These steps apply to the Elgato hardware and console setups described in its guide; use the instructions for your own model if its controls differ.
Test before the next livestream
- Play representative game audio and confirm the intended source’s OBS meter moves.
- Record a short local test using your normal stream configuration.
- Listen to the resulting file, including the game and microphone if both should be present.
- Before going live, test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube Help says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- While live, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages as well as OBS’s meters.
YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local backup.

Can you restore audio in an already-silent replay?
Do not count on repairing a silent YouTube replay after the stream. The YouTube archive guidance explains archiving and recommends a local backup, but does not establish that missing audio can reliably be restored in YouTube Studio. If you made a local recording, check whether it contains sound; otherwise, the available guidance does not support promising recovery of the missing audio.
