How to Fix a Yellow Screen Border That Won’t Go Away After Recording

If a yellow border stays on your Windows screen after recording, first stop the capture and close the recorder, then check for another capture app or overlay still running. The border is normally a Windows screen-capture indicator; a lingering border can also come from a recorder-specific issue or an overlay, so its color alone does not identify the cause.

What the yellow border means

Windows Graphics Capture can add a yellow border around the content being captured to show what is being shared or recorded. Microsoft describes it as a visual reminder that the selected content is being captured. The API shipped with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803), according to the Windows Developer Blog.

If the border disappears when you end capture, it is serving as an indicator. If it remains, determine whether another capture session or an on-screen overlay is still active before changing Windows settings. The symptom alone does not establish which app or component is responsible.

Work through these fixes in order

  1. Stop capture and close recording or sharing apps

Stop the recording or screen share, then exit the recorder rather than merely minimizing it. Check the system tray and Task Manager for capture tools that are still running. A Microsoft Q&A discussion suggests checking tools such as Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar, OBS, Zoom, Teams, and AnyDesk. This is community advice, not an official Microsoft diagnostic checklist.

  2. Check for overlays and desktop utilities

Look for apps that draw their own on-screen indicators, even if you are not recording with them. In a Windows 11 Microsoft Q&A thread, a respondent reported that quitting PowerToys from the system tray removed a lingering border and mentioned ZoomIt as another possible trigger. Treat these as leads to check, not confirmed causes on every PC.

  3. Review Windows 11 screenshot-border settings for OBS

If OBS is involved, open Settings > Privacy and security > Screenshot borders in Windows 11 and inspect the per-app Let apps turn off the screenshot border control. An OBS Studio issue opened November 17, 2025 describes a Studio Mode case in which the yellow outline remained after a source was hidden, but disappeared outside Studio Mode. This report concerns a particular OBS mode and does not show that the same setting will fix every persistent border.

  4. Check Graphics capture settings if you use Medal

For Medal Advanced Window Capture, Medal’s support page points to Settings > Privacy & security > Graphics capture and the Let apps turn off the screenshot border option. Medal says this option is available only in Windows 11. Its documentation also says the border does not appear in final clips or full-session recordings; that behavior is specific to Medal and should not be assumed for other recorders. See Medal’s Advanced Window Capture instructions.

  5. Restart Windows Explorer if Snipping Tool was involved

If you used Snipping Tool and closing it did not clear the outline, restarting Windows Explorer from Task Manager has cleared it in a Microsoft Q&A report titled “Snip Tool causes Yellow Border”. This is a reported workaround, not a guaranteed repair. Save open work before restarting Explorer because the desktop and taskbar may briefly reload.

If the border is still there

Record the details before trying further changes: your Windows version, the recorder or screenshot tool, the capture mode, and whether the outline appears in the saved video or only on the live desktop. Those distinctions can help identify whether you are seeing a Windows capture indicator, an app-drawn overlay, or a mode-specific issue. The available reports do not establish a single fix that applies to every Windows build and capture tool.
