Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →0x800704D is not a complete, identifiable Microsoft Windows Update error code. A missing hexadecimal digit or suffix is likely, so do not apply a code-specific fix yet. First copy the full value and the update’s KB number from Windows Update history. Then run the built-in troubleshooter, restart, and try the update again. If it still fails, reset the Windows Update cache and check your network connection and free storage.
What “0x800704D” tells you—and what it does not
Microsoft’s current Windows Update error references do not identify 0x800704D as a complete documented code. Windows error values normally contain a full hexadecimal value; the string shown in the title may have been truncated, copied incorrectly, or displayed without a suffix. Until you have the complete value, any claim about a specific cause would be guesswork.

The practical goal is therefore twofold: capture enough evidence to identify the failure, and work through Microsoft’s general Windows Update recovery sequence. The sequence below applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10, with separate menu paths where they differ.

Copy the full hexadecimal code
- Open Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Open Update history (on some builds this appears as View update history).
- Locate the failed update and copy the entire error value exactly as displayed. Include every character after
0x; do not rely on the shortened text in a notification or search result. - Copy the update’s KB number, such as
KB1234567, and note whether the failure occurred while downloading, installing, or restarting.
Record the Windows edition and build
Open Settings > System > About on Windows 11, or Settings > System > About on Windows 10. Record the edition (for example, Home or Pro), version, and OS build. This information matters when you later compare the complete code with Microsoft’s documentation or request support. Keep the failed KB number with the build number; either item alone is less useful.

Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft’s first recommended action for an update error is the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. Microsoft describes it this way: “If you get an error code while downloading and installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem.” Run it before deleting files or changing services.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Choose Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the troubleshooter to inspect Windows Update and apply any repairs it offers. Read the result instead of closing the window immediately; it may identify a service or configuration problem.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
- Choose Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then Run the troubleshooter.
- Follow the suggested actions and note whether Windows reports that it made a change or found no problem.
Restart and retry
Restart the computer after the troubleshooter completes, even if it says no changes were necessary. After signing in, return to the Windows Update page and select Check for updates. Let the update proceed without forcing a shutdown. If the same failure returns, continue with the cache reset rather than repeatedly selecting retry.

Reset the Windows Update download cache
A damaged or incomplete update download can keep failing even after the troubleshooter runs. Microsoft’s recovery guidance is to stop the Windows Update service, clear the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, start the service again, restart Windows, and retry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStop Windows Update
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - In the Services window, find Windows Update.
- Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open until the status changes from running.
Delete only the cache contents
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Open the folder. Select its contents, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself, and press Delete. - If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update has stopped. Do not force-delete unrelated files elsewhere in
C:Windows. - Close File Explorer after the contents have been removed. Windows will recreate the cache files it needs.
Start the service and retry
- Return to services.msc.
- Right-click Windows Update and choose Start.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Windows Update and select Check for updates. Re-enter the KB number in your notes if the update history now shows a new attempt.
Clearing this folder removes downloaded update packages and temporary update metadata; it does not remove your personal documents. The next scan may need to download the update again, so keep the computer connected until the scan and installation finish.

Check the two conditions that commonly block a retry
Confirm internet access
When the message refers to downloading, a timeout, or a connection problem, verify that the PC can reach the internet before starting another scan. Open a browser and load a few ordinary pages, then reconnect to your normal network if the connection dropped. If you use a metered or restricted connection, make sure it permits Windows Update traffic. Do not diagnose a missing or incomplete error code from a network symptom alone; use the complete code and KB number you recorded.
Confirm available storage
Updates need free space for the downloaded package, temporary files and the installation process. Check the system drive in Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10). If the failure explicitly mentions space, free enough room for Windows to retry by removing files you no longer need or moving large personal files to another location. The supplied guidance does not specify a universal free-space number, so do not treat an invented threshold as a requirement.

| Installation fails repeatedly | Reset C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, restart, and retry. |
| Message mentions insufficient space | Check free storage on the Windows system drive before downloading again. |

Return to Update history and capture the complete code and KB number; the value is not sufficient for a code-specific diagnosis. |
What to do when the update still fails
Verify the evidence instead of guessing at a fix
After the troubleshooter, restart, cache reset and network/storage checks, inspect Update history again. Confirm whether the code is still identical and whether the same KB number is failing. A different code or a different KB means the problem has changed; repeat the process using the new evidence rather than assuming the original diagnosis still applies.
If the complete value does not match Microsoft’s documented error tables, escalate with the exact hexadecimal code, KB number, Windows edition, version, build and the Windows Update logs. This packet lets a support technician distinguish an update-package failure from a service, connectivity or compatibility issue. The incomplete string in the title cannot do that.

- FUNCTIONALITY: Helps resolve common issues like slow performance, Windows not loading, black screens, or blue screens through repair and recovery options
- BOOT SUPPORT: UEFI-compliant drive ensures proper system booting across various computer makes and models with 64-bit architecture
- COMPLETE PACKAGE: Includes detailed instructions for system recovery, repair procedures, and proper boot setup for different computer configurations

Keep a concise retry log
- Write down the date and time of each attempt.
- Record whether the failure happened during download, installation or restart.
- Note which action preceded the retry: troubleshooter, cache reset, network reconnection or storage cleanup.
- Preserve any new error code rather than replacing it with the original
0x800704Dlabel.
This log prevents repeated destructive steps and gives support a reproducible sequence. Do not delete additional Windows folders or disable security features merely because the short code appears in a search result; Microsoft has not identified that short string as a complete standalone error.
Windows 10 support status changes the decision
Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s free Windows Update support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” If the affected computer is running Windows 10, first establish whether the failed KB is from a supported servicing arrangement and whether the device can move to Windows 11. A cache reset cannot create updates that Microsoft no longer offers through free Windows Update.
Windows 11 remains the current path for receiving ordinary Windows Update servicing. Record the edition and build before making an upgrade decision, because those details determine which Microsoft instructions apply. Do not infer that every Windows 10 update failure is caused by end of support; the complete KB and code are still needed to identify the immediate failure.

| Situation | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Windows 11, complete code and KB available | Run the Windows 11 troubleshooter, restart, reset the cache if needed, then escalate with the recorded evidence. |
Windows 11, only 0x800704D available |
Capture the complete value before selecting a code-specific remedy. |
| Windows 10, update failure before October 14, 2025 | Use the Windows 10 troubleshooting path and the cache reset described above. |
| Windows 10, update failure after October 14, 2025 | Check the KB, edition and servicing status, and evaluate the move to Windows 11; free Windows Update support has ended. |
Safety checks and common mistakes
- Do not treat the short code as complete. One missing character can point to a different Microsoft error.
- Do not delete the parent folder. Stop Windows Update first and remove only the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Do not skip the restart. Microsoft’s sequence expects a restart after troubleshooting and after the cache reset.
- Do not retry indefinitely without new evidence. Capture a changed code, KB number or failure stage before choosing another step.
- Do not assume a storage figure. Microsoft’s cited guidance says to check available space but does not publish one universal amount for this error.
- Do not confuse Windows 10’s support date with a diagnosis. October 14, 2025 explains the servicing context; it does not identify the cause of an individual failure.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. A free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a paid subscription.
When you should stop and seek targeted help
Seek targeted Microsoft or organizational support when the complete error and KB still produce no match, when the update fails after a correctly completed cache reset, or when the computer repeatedly rolls back during restart. Provide the evidence packet rather than only saying “0x800704D”: the full hexadecimal value, KB number, Windows edition, version, build, failure stage, troubleshooting result and the steps already attempted. That information is the difference between a code-specific remedy and another round of generic retries.
