How to fix a Windows 11 right-click menu that is slow or unresponsive

Start with Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart. If only an older app command seems to be missing, choose Show more options; Windows 11 places some Windows 10 context-menu extensions there. If the menu itself is delayed, freezes, or will not open, use a clean boot to test for background software interference. Only then move to system-file repair or Windows recovery, and treat the SharePoint-related update fix as a special case rather than a universal explanation.

Identify which problem you actually have

A right-click problem can mean two different things. Windows 11 intentionally presents a shorter, streamlined menu, so an older application’s command may be present but hidden. A genuinely slow or unresponsive menu takes a long time to appear, stalls while it is open, or fails to appear at all. The remedy depends on which symptom you can reproduce.

What you see What it usually indicates First action
One familiar command is absent, but the menu opens promptly The command may be in the expanded Windows 10-style menu Select Show more options
The menu appears after a long pause A shell extension, background service, update issue, or wider system problem may be involved Install updates, restart, then test with a clean boot
The menu freezes or never opens, and File Explorer has other faults The problem may extend beyond the context menu Check general performance, then consider component repair

Before changing anything, reproduce the behavior deliberately. Right-click the same file or folder more than once and note whether the delay is consistent, whether the pointer shows a busy state, and whether File Explorer recovers on its own. Try a plain local folder and, if relevant, a location managed by a synchronization service. Record whether the problem affects every item or only a particular file type. These observations help separate a missing command from a shell-wide failure and give you a baseline for every later test.

Use Show more options when a command is missing

Right-click a file or folder in File Explorer. If the menu appears normally but lacks a command supplied by an older Windows 10 extension, select Show more options. Microsoft explains that not all Windows 10 extensions are shown in the streamlined Windows 11 menu; those extensions remain available in the expanded menu.

This is not a performance fix. If the first menu takes several seconds to open, turns white, stops responding, or blocks File Explorer, continue with the troubleshooting steps below instead of repeatedly opening the expanded menu. Check both menu levels once so you know whether the issue is command visibility or a delay in displaying the menu itself.

Install Windows updates and restart

Microsoft’s initial File Explorer guidance starts with updates and a restart because shell behavior can change through Windows servicing. Use this sequence:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update in the left pane.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install applicable updates, including any required restart.
  5. Restart the PC even if Windows did not explicitly demand one.

After signing in again, test the same file or folder in File Explorer. Use the same location and, if possible, the same type of item; a menu populated by a particular application can behave differently from a plain folder. If an update is waiting for a restart, do not judge the result until Windows has completed that restart. Keep a note of the update date and the behavior before and after it so you can report a clear change if the problem persists.

Use a clean boot to find third-party interference

A clean boot starts Windows with non-Microsoft services and startup applications disabled. It is a diagnostic state, not a recommended permanent configuration. If the context menu works normally there, something that normally starts with Windows is interfering with File Explorer.

Enter the diagnostic state

  1. Save work and close open applications.
  2. Open Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure and follow its Windows 11 sequence to open System Configuration.
  3. On the Services tab, hide Microsoft services before disabling the remaining services. Hiding Microsoft services prevents a diagnostic test from accidentally disabling core Windows components.
  4. Use the procedure’s Startup step to disable the listed startup applications, then restart.
  5. After Windows starts, open File Explorer and reproduce the right-click action that was slow or unresponsive.

Use the same test item and location you used before the clean boot. A clean boot changes the background environment, so a successful comparison is meaningful only if the action itself is held constant. Some features can be unavailable while non-Microsoft services and startup items are disabled. Do not use the clean-boot state as your everyday setup, and do not disable Microsoft services indiscriminately.

Interpret the result

  • The menu is still slow in a clean boot: third-party startup software is less likely to be the immediate cause. Continue to the update-specific and broader system checks.
  • The menu works normally: restore normal startup, then isolate the conflict. Re-enable services and startup applications systematically—groups or one item at a time—restarting and testing after each change. When the delay returns, the last group contains the likely source; narrow that group further.

Systematic re-enabling is important. Turning everything back on at once removes the comparison and leaves you with no evidence about which item matters. Conversely, disabling items permanently can break synchronization, security, archive, graphics, or source-control features that depend on them.

Return to normal startup

Use the clean-boot procedure’s instructions to restore normal startup when testing is complete. Leaving services or startup applications disabled can make unrelated programs appear broken and can hide the very conflict you are trying to identify.

Check the SharePoint-specific Windows 11 fix

Microsoft’s July 22, 2025 preview-update notes describe one conditional case: syncing additional SharePoint sites in File Explorer could slow folder navigation, opening the context menu, and launching files. The notes identify KB5062660 (OS Build 26100.4770) with that fix.

This applies only when the affected PC has the relevant SharePoint synchronization setup and is running an update containing the fix. It is not evidence that SharePoint causes every slow right-click menu. If you do sync multiple SharePoint sites, install applicable Windows updates and review Settings > Windows Update > Update history for the installed update. If your PC does not use that setup, skip this branch.

Use the SharePoint condition as a matching check, not as a reason to change synchronization settings at random. A computer that never synchronizes SharePoint sites does not match the documented case, while a matching computer should first be brought current with applicable servicing before more disruptive troubleshooting.

Check for broader Windows performance problems

A slow context menu can be one symptom of a generally overloaded or unhealthy system. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup applications, outdated software, and hardware limitations as possible contributors to overall PC slowness. None of these checks, by itself, proves why one particular menu is delayed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Available storage

Look at the system drive in Settings > System > Storage. If free space is very low, remove or move files using Windows’ storage recommendations, then restart and retest. Keep personal files backed up before deleting anything you may need. Storage pressure is a general performance check; it is not a guaranteed explanation for a menu that alone is slow.

Startup applications

Open Settings > Apps > Startup and review programs that launch automatically. Disabling an unnecessary startup item can reduce background load, but it does not establish that the item caused the context-menu delay. Change one item at a time if you are using this as a diagnostic test. The clean-boot comparison is more informative when you need to test many services and startup applications together.

Outdated applications and drivers

Update software that adds File Explorer commands, such as archive, security, synchronization, graphics, or source-control tools. A clean boot can help determine whether one of those integrations is involved; do not remove software solely because it adds a context-menu command. If the problem began after installing or updating one of these tools, record that timing, but still confirm the behavior with a controlled test rather than assuming causation.

Hardware limits

Older processors, limited memory, or a heavily loaded storage device can make many Windows operations slow. If only right-clicking is affected while other applications are responsive, hardware is a less direct explanation than a shell integration or service conflict. If the entire desktop is sluggish, investigate system performance as a broader issue and compare several ordinary File Explorer actions, not just the context menu.

Repair Windows components when several features malfunction

When File Explorer problems occur alongside other Windows failures—such as broken built-in tools, repeated component errors, or updates that will not install—Microsoft documents Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) as repair tools. They are not a specialized right-click-menu reset.

Use an administrator Command Prompt and follow Microsoft’s current order and syntax. The commonly documented sequence is:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
  1. Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
  2. Run the DISM command and wait for it to finish; interrupting component repair can leave the operation incomplete.
  3. Run sfc /scannow after DISM completes.
  4. Restart Windows and test File Explorer again.

Read the command results rather than assuming a repair occurred. If Windows reports that it could not complete a repair, use Microsoft’s current recovery guidance instead of repeatedly running commands without addressing the reported condition. If the context menu is the only failing feature and all other Windows components work normally, these commands may be disproportionate; reserve them for evidence of a wider component problem.

Use Windows recovery only after lower-disruption steps

Recovery is appropriate when the PC has wider, persistent problems and updates, clean-boot testing, and component repair have not resolved them. Microsoft advises starting with the least disruptive recovery option. The available choices differ in what they preserve and what they remove, so read the option’s description on your edition and version of Windows before confirming it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Back up important documents, photos, and other data before choosing an option that can remove applications, settings, or files.
  • Record application installers, license information, and any configuration you will need to restore.
  • Keep the PC connected to reliable power during a reset or reinstall.
  • Do not choose a destructive option merely because the context menu is inconvenient; reserve it for a broader Windows failure that justifies the risk.

A recovery operation should be a considered escalation, not another diagnostic toggle. Confirm that the problem is reproducible, that safer checks have been completed, and that you understand what the selected option will preserve. If the machine contains business or irreplaceable data, verify the backup before proceeding.

Choose the next step by disruption and diagnostic value

Action Disruption What it tells you When to use it
Show more options None Whether the command is hidden by the streamlined menu A command is missing but the menu is responsive
Windows Update and restart Low Whether a pending servicing change or restart resolves the behavior First step for a slow or unreliable menu
Clean boot Temporary; some non-Microsoft features are unavailable Whether startup software or services are involved The delay persists after updating and restarting
SharePoint update check Low Whether the documented synchronization scenario matches your PC You sync multiple SharePoint sites through File Explorer
Storage, startup, and software checks Low to moderate Whether the PC has broader performance pressure Other Windows operations are also slow
DISM and SFC Moderate; command-line repair Whether Windows component corruption is reported and repaired Several Windows features malfunction
Recovery Potentially high; some choices can cause data loss Whether reinstalling or resetting Windows is justified Persistent, wide-ranging failure after safer checks

The order matters because each step answers a different question. The expanded menu tests a design change; updating and restarting address routine servicing; a clean boot isolates background interference; broader checks look for system-wide pressure; DISM and SFC address component integrity; and recovery accepts the greatest potential disruption.

Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder

Changing many things at once

Disabling numerous startup items, uninstalling several applications, and editing system settings together removes your ability to identify the cause. Make one controlled change, restart when required, and retest the same context-menu action.

Assuming a missing command is a delay

The compact Windows 11 menu is a design change. Check Show more options before altering services or repairing Windows.

Leaving a clean boot enabled

A clean boot is useful because it changes the startup environment. It is not a performance mode. Restore normal startup after the comparison so that ordinary applications and services can run again.

Treating the SharePoint note as a universal diagnosis

The July 22, 2025 update note describes a specific synchronization condition. Without that condition, the note does not identify the cause of your menu delay.

Using recovery without a backup

Some recovery options can remove data or applications. Back up first and select the least disruptive option that addresses the wider problem.

Repeating commands without reading results

DISM and SFC provide status information. Running them repeatedly without acting on an error message does not turn a context-menu symptom into a diagnosis. Record the result and move to the appropriate Microsoft recovery guidance if a repair cannot complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the menu remains unresponsive

If the menu still fails after an update, restart, clean-boot comparison, and any relevant broader checks, document exactly what happens: the file type, location, delay length, whether Show more options opens, and whether other File Explorer actions are affected. That record helps distinguish a single extension from a system-wide Explorer failure. At that point, use Microsoft’s current support and recovery guidance for the Windows version installed on the PC rather than applying random registry tweaks or deleting shell components.

There is no single Microsoft-documented cause that explains every slow Windows 11 right-click menu. The reliable approach is to separate menu design from true unresponsiveness, test low-risk causes first, use clean boot as an isolation tool, and reserve repair or recovery for evidence of a wider Windows problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a right-click command missing in Windows 11?

Windows 11 uses a streamlined context menu, and some Windows 10 extensions are not shown in its first view. Right-click the item and select Show more options. If the menu opens promptly there, the command was hidden rather than blocked by a performance problem.

How long should I test after installing updates?

Complete the installation and restart Windows, even when no restart is explicitly requested. Then repeat the same right-click action on the same file or folder. Keeping the test consistent makes it easier to tell whether the update and restart changed the behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a clean boot prove?

A clean boot temporarily disables non-Microsoft services and startup applications. If the menu becomes responsive, one of those normally starting items is implicated. Restore normal startup and re-enable items systematically to isolate the conflict; a clean boot is not intended as a permanent configuration.

Does SharePoint cause every slow Windows 11 context menu?

No. Microsoft documented a specific July 22, 2025 case in which syncing additional SharePoint sites in File Explorer could slow navigation, context-menu opening, and file launches. The noted fix is associated with KB5062660, OS Build 26100.4770. This branch applies only to PCs with that synchronization setup.

Should I run DISM and SFC for any delayed right-click?

Not automatically. Microsoft documents DISM and System File Checker for broader Windows component problems. Use them when File Explorer trouble occurs alongside other failures, such as broken built-in features or update errors, and follow the administrator Command Prompt sequence and current Microsoft instructions.

Can low storage or too many startup apps be the cause?

They can contribute to general PC slowness, as can outdated software and hardware limits, but none proves the cause of one delayed menu. Check Settings > System > Storage and Settings > Apps > Startup when other Windows operations are slow, and use a clean boot when you need a controlled interference test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I reset or reinstall Windows?

Only after updates, restart, clean-boot testing, relevant performance checks, and component repair have failed and the PC has wider persistent problems. Start with the least disruptive recovery option, read what it preserves or removes, and back up important data because some choices can cause data loss.

The Bottom Line

First distinguish a hidden command from a genuinely slow menu: use Show more options for the former. For real delays, update Windows, restart, and compare behavior in a clean boot. Check the SharePoint-specific update condition only if you sync multiple SharePoint sites. Use storage and startup checks for broader slowness, DISM/SFC for wider component failures, and recovery only after safer steps and a verified backup.
