A slow Windows 10 computer is usually diagnosable without reinstalling Windows. First use Task Manager to identify whether the processor, memory, storage drive, or one application is saturated. Then reduce unnecessary startup load, install available updates, scan with Windows Security, reclaim storage, and only afterward consider rolling back an update or replacing aging hardware. The order matters: changing settings before identifying the bottleneck can hide the real cause or risk your data.
1. Find the bottleneck before changing anything
Performance advice is most useful when it matches the symptom. A computer that takes several minutes to start has a different problem from one that becomes slow only when a browser is open. Write down when the slowdown occurs: during startup, while browsing, when opening files, during every task, or only in one application. Also note whether the delay began after an update, a new program, or a hardware change.

Use Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- On the Processes tab, select the CPU column to sort by processor use. Repeat with Memory and then Disk.
- Observe the list for a minute while the computer is slow. Record the process at the top and whether the total percentage stays near the limit.
- On Performance, check the CPU, memory, disk and network graphs. A single process near the top points to an application or service; consistently high totals across the system indicate a broader resource constraint.
Do not end a process merely because its name is unfamiliar. Search its publisher or open its file location first. Stopping a Windows, security, hardware or driver component can cause a crash or loss of unsaved work. If the graphs are normal but one program remains unresponsive, repair or update that program instead of changing system-wide settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInterpret what you see
- CPU stays near 100%: a demanding application, background task, malware, or an update may be consuming processor time.
- Memory is nearly full: too many open applications or browser tabs can force Windows to use the slower paging file. Close what you do not need and see whether the working set falls.
- Disk is near 100%: an old hard disk, update, scan, synchronization job, or a process reading and writing large files may be the limiting factor.
- One process dominates: note its name before closing it. The process may identify the fix more accurately than a generic “speed-up” setting.
2. Restart and remove only unnecessary startup apps
Close unused applications and browser tabs, restart Windows, and open only the programs you need. A restart clears temporary hangs and gives you a clean baseline. If the computer is fast immediately after a restart but slows as programs launch, inspect startup entries rather than disabling random services.

Disable a recognized startup entry
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup. If your build presents a different route, search Start for Startup Apps.
- Review each entry, its publisher and its impact label. Turn off only software you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in. You can launch it manually later.
- Restart and compare the boot time and Task Manager readings with your notes. Re-enable an entry if a needed feature stops working.
Leave security software, touchpad or keyboard utilities, graphics and audio components, backup tools you rely on, and other hardware or driver components enabled unless you know exactly what the entry does. Disabling a startup item is reversible; deleting files or services is not.
What Microsoft’s impact labels mean
| Label | Microsoft’s startup measurement | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| High | More than 1 second of CPU time or more than 3 MB of disk use at startup | Consider disabling it if you recognize it and do not need it at sign-in. |
| Medium | 300–1,000 milliseconds of CPU time or up to 3 MB of disk use | Disable only when the application is unnecessary at startup. |
| Low | Less than 300 milliseconds of CPU time and less than 300 KB of disk use | The likely gain is small; leave it alone unless you have another reason. |
The labels describe measured startup load, not whether an application is safe or useful. A high-impact entry can be legitimate, and a low-impact entry can still be unwanted. Use the publisher and your own need as the decision criteria.
3. Install Windows and driver updates, then scan for malware
Check Windows Update
- Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates. Restart when Windows requests it.
- Review View optional updates for driver updates when a device is malfunctioning. Install only drivers that match your hardware and keep a restore option available.
Updates can contain bug fixes and performance improvements. A pending update can also run downloads, installation and cleanup tasks in the background, temporarily raising CPU or disk use. Let the process finish before judging performance.

Run Windows Security
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Quick scan.
- Allow the scan to complete. If it reports a threat, follow Windows Security’s removal or quarantine instructions and restart.
Malware can consume processor and disk resources, so a scan belongs near the beginning of troubleshooting. Keep your security software enabled while testing other fixes.
4. Check free space and reclaim it safely
Low free space can interfere with Windows updates and leaves less room for temporary files and paging. In File Explorer, select This PC and inspect the bar for the system drive, normally C:. If it is nearly full, identify large personal files before deleting anything.
Use Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage and turn on or run Storage Sense when it is available.
- Alternatively, search Start for Disk Cleanup, choose the system drive, and select Clean up system files when offered.
- Read each category. Do not select a category you cannot identify, and take special care with old Windows installation files because removing them can eliminate your ability to roll back.
Move large personal files
In Downloads, Videos, Pictures and other folders, switch File Explorer to a details view and sort by size. Move personal files you still need to an external drive or another internal drive, then verify that the copy opens before deleting the original. Keep a backup of irreplaceable documents and photos. Removing temporary or cache files is different from deleting personal data; do not assume an unfamiliar folder is disposable.

5. If the slowdown began after an update
A new problem that appears immediately after a Windows update has a clear rollback path. Record the update date and the symptoms first so you can tell whether the change helped.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history.
- Select Uninstall updates, choose the recent update, and confirm. The option may be unavailable for some updates.
- Restart and test the same task that exposed the slowdown.
If uninstalling is not offered or does not help, use System Restore and select a restore point from before the problem. Restore affects system files and settings, not your personal documents, but applications or drivers installed afterward may be removed. Do not interrupt the process.
6. Decide whether hardware is the limit
Microsoft notes that an older PC with outdated hardware may not improve significantly through software changes. If Task Manager shows that the disk is repeatedly the bottleneck, an SSD is the clearest upgrade path from a mechanical hard drive. A fast solid-state drive, including a compatible NVMe model where the computer supports it, can improve boot and file-access responsiveness; the actual gain depends on the old drive, interface, workload and the rest of the system. No universal speed percentage applies.

Check compatibility before buying a drive
- Identify whether the computer accepts a 2.5-inch SATA drive, an M.2 SATA module, or an NVMe M.2 module. These interfaces and physical keying are not interchangeable.
- Check the manufacturer’s service manual for the supported form factor, maximum capacity and, for laptops, whether a replacement is practical.
- Back up personal files before cloning or replacing the drive. Keep the original drive untouched until the new installation has started successfully.
- After installation, confirm that Windows starts, activation is retained and your important applications and files are present.
Adding memory can help when Task Manager repeatedly shows nearly all RAM in use, but the computer must support the module type and capacity. If memory use is moderate and disk activity is the constraint, more RAM will not turn a slow hard drive into a fast one. Match the upgrade to the measurement you recorded.

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. A cleanup may make an old installation feel more responsive, but it does not restore security support.

8. Choose the least risky fix that addresses your symptom
| Action | Likely bottleneck | Reversible? | Backup expectation | Cost and compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Close apps, restart, disable recognized startup entries | Startup load or a stuck process | Yes | Not normally required, but save work first | No cost; works within Windows 10 |
| Windows Update and Windows Security scan | Pending fixes, driver issues or malware-related load | Updates vary; scan changes depend on findings | Recommended before major updates | No separate cost; drivers must match hardware |
| Storage Sense, Disk Cleanup and moving personal files | Low free space | Moved files can be restored; deletion may not be | Back up files before deleting | No cost; external storage may be needed |
| Uninstall a recent update or use System Restore | Slowdown that follows a system change | Usually reversible, subject to restore points | Back up important work first | No separate cost; some updates cannot be removed |
| Reset or reinstall Windows | Persistent software corruption after other steps | No, unless you have a complete recovery | Required; applications and settings may be removed | Time and compatible installation/recovery media |
| Replace a hard drive with a compatible SSD | Storage hardware bottleneck | Only if the old drive is retained | Required before cloning or replacement | Hardware cost; interface and form factor must match |
Use reversible actions first. A reset, reinstall or drive replacement is an escalation, not a routine “speed” setting. The more disruptive the action, the stronger your backup and recovery plan must be.
9. When the basic sequence does not solve it
The computer is slow only at startup
Recheck Startup Apps after a clean restart and compare the impact labels. If startup becomes normal after entries are disabled but later tasks remain slow, return to Task Manager during the later slowdown; the bottleneck has changed.
Only the browser is slow
Close unnecessary tabs and extensions, restart the browser, and compare its memory and CPU use with other applications in Task Manager. Do not disable Windows services to solve a problem isolated to one browser.
File opening is slow while CPU is low
Watch Disk in Task Manager and inspect free space in This PC. A nearly full or aging mechanical drive is more plausible than a processor shortage. Preserve a backup before the drive begins failing.
The slowdown remains after cleanup and updates
Repeat the measurement while the system is actually slow. If no single process is responsible and the disk or memory remains saturated, software cleanup has reached its limit; evaluate compatible hardware or a supported operating-system upgrade. If the problem began after a specific update, use the rollback options rather than repeatedly deleting files.
10. Back up before reset or reinstall
Reset this PC and a clean reinstall can remove applications, settings and personal files depending on the option selected. Before using either, copy documents, photos, browser data, license information and any files stored outside your normal folders to a separate drive. Create or verify recovery media, confirm that you can sign in to required accounts, and collect installation files and hardware drivers. Test the backup by opening representative files. Only then choose the reset or reinstall path offered by Windows or the computer manufacturer.
