How to Fix a USB Drive Windows Won’t Recognize (Windows 10 and 11)

If a USB drive is missing from File Explorer, first find out whether Windows can see the hardware at all. Reconnect it, try another port and another computer, then check Disk Management. A drive that appears there but has no drive letter usually needs a letter assigned; a device that appears only in Device Manager needs its reported error code investigated. If it is absent from both tools on more than one computer, stop making changes that could alter the disk and treat hardware failure as a possibility—especially when the files matter.

What “Windows won’t recognize my USB drive” actually means

“Not showing up” describes several different conditions. File Explorer is only the final view of a storage volume. Windows may detect the USB electronics while failing to mount a volume, or it may detect a volume but not assign a drive letter. Conversely, a drive can be absent from every Windows storage and device list because the connection, electronics or media has failed.

Where you look What a result means Safest next move
File Explorer The volume is mounted and has a path such as E:. Open it and copy important files before doing anything else.
Disk Management The disk or volume is visible even though File Explorer is not. Check its status. A volume without a letter may become accessible after you assign one.
Device Manager Windows has a device entry, possibly with a warning icon and an error code. Open Properties, record Device status, and follow the code-specific guidance.
None of these Windows is not currently presenting the device to its storage or device tools. Recheck the physical connection and test another computer. Protect the data before considering any destructive operation.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: formatting a volume simply because it is not visible in Explorer. Visibility and data integrity are separate questions.

Protect the files before changing the disk

If the USB drive contains photographs, work, backups or anything you cannot replace, make data preservation the first priority. Do not initialize it, create a partition, create a new volume or format it while you are still trying to understand what happened. Microsoft Support states: Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition. Read the warning in Microsoft’s Disk Management in Windows documentation before accepting any prompt that mentions formatting.

Disk Management may label a disk as unallocated, offline or without a drive letter. Those labels describe how Windows currently presents the disk; they do not prove that the old files are disposable. If you are unsure which physical device corresponds to a row, do not select it. Capacity, connection type and the time at which the row appears can help you identify it, but never rely on a guess when the contents are valuable.

Repeated write attempts can make a marginal device harder to read. Use the low-risk checks below first. If Windows repeatedly disconnects the drive, reports I/O errors, or the drive makes unusual noises, stop before creating or formatting anything. Software menus cannot repair physically failed flash memory or recover files by themselves.

1. Check the connection without altering the data

Reconnect directly to the computer

  1. Close any file or backup program that might still be using the drive.
  2. Unplug the USB drive, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it firmly.
  3. Try a different USB port on the same computer. A port can be the problem even when the drive is healthy.
  4. If the drive uses a detachable cable, inspect both ends and, when you have a known-good compatible cable, use that as a diagnostic substitution.

A hub, dock or adapter can introduce another point of failure. Bypass it for the test by connecting the drive directly to the computer. This does not prove that a hub or adapter is defective; it simply removes one variable.

Test another computer

Connect the drive to another Windows computer if one is available. This comparison helps separate a computer or port problem from a problem that follows the drive. If it appears on the second computer, copy important files there and then troubleshoot the original computer. If it fails in the same way on both computers, avoid assuming that a Windows setting is the cause.

Check USB-C connections carefully

For a USB-C drive, verify that the plug is fully inserted and that the cable and port support the device’s required connection. Microsoft’s Fix USB-C problems in Windows guidance explains that an unrecognized USB device can report a problem or a driver problem. Look for a device error after reconnecting rather than repeatedly forcing the connector.

2. Use Disk Management to see whether Windows can find the disk

Disk Management is Windows’ built-in tool for viewing disks and volumes, assigning drive letters and managing partitions. Microsoft says the tool works the same in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but these Disk Management paths still apply to an existing Windows 10 installation.

Open Disk Management

Use any of these Microsoft-documented paths:

  • Right-click the Start button and choose Disk Management.
  • Search for Create and format hard disk partitions and open the matching result.
  • Press Windows key + R, enter diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter.

Give the window time to finish loading. Compare the listed capacity and connection with the USB drive you just attached. Do not rely on drive letters alone; letters can change or be missing.

Interpret the status you see

Disk Management status What it tells you Action and caution
A healthy volume with no drive letter Windows can see the volume, but Explorer has no path to it. Assign a drive letter using the steps below. Select the correct volume.
Disk marked Offline Windows has detected a disk but is not presenting it as online. You can use the Online command described below, but pause if the drive is failing or the files are irreplaceable.
Unallocated space Windows sees space not currently assigned to a volume. Do not create a new volume when old data may be present. New-volume creation is setup, not data-preserving repair.
Disk listed but the volume has an unfamiliar or missing status The partition or file system may not be mountable by the current Windows installation. Do not format or initialize it merely to make Explorer show something. Preserve the original state first.
No disk entry at all Disk Management is not receiving a storage device to display. Return to the port, cable and second-computer checks, then inspect Device Manager.

Assign a drive letter to a visible volume

Only do this when Disk Management shows the expected USB volume and you are confident you have selected the right row.

  1. Right-click the volume’s partition area, not an unrelated disk, and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  2. Select Add if no letter is shown. If a letter is already present but conflicting, use the same dialog to change it.
  3. Choose an available letter and select OK, then confirm the change.
  4. Close and reopen File Explorer. The volume should appear under the new letter if the file system is readable.

Changing a letter changes the path Windows uses; it does not repair damaged media. Programs that were configured to use the old letter may need their path corrected later.

Bring an offline disk online only when the data is safe

If the disk label clearly identifies the USB drive and it is marked Offline, right-click the disk label and choose Online. Wait for Disk Management to refresh. Do not use this as a reflex when the drive is disconnecting, producing read errors or holding the only copy of important files. In those situations, preserving the current state is more important than making the disk appear online.

Handle unallocated space as a setup state, not a repair

Windows offers to create a new simple volume when you right-click unallocated space. That is appropriate for a genuinely new, empty drive or for space you have deliberately erased and backed up. It is not a safe response to a missing volume. Creating a partition or formatting can replace information Windows needs to locate existing files, so leave the space unchanged when the previous contents matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check Device Manager for a code-specific problem

Device Manager can reveal a USB device that is not yet usable as a disk. Open it by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager. Look for the recently connected device or an entry with a warning icon.

  1. Right-click the suspect entry and choose Properties.
  2. On the General tab, read Device status and write down the exact error code and wording.
  3. Use Microsoft’s Error codes in Device Manager in Windows instructions for that code. Microsoft’s USB-C guidance also directs you to note the code and use the code-specific resolution.
  4. If the documented remedy calls for it, select Update driver, or uninstall the device and then restart or use Scan for hardware changes so Windows can detect it again.

Prefer drivers supplied through Windows Update or the computer, motherboard or device manufacturer. Avoid unverified driver-download sites: a driver that is merely labeled for USB can be wrong for the controller and can create a second problem.

A successful driver refresh may make the device appear, but it does not guarantee that the flash memory or enclosure is healthy. If the same error returns on another computer, treat the repeated behavior as evidence that more Windows menu changes are unlikely to solve the underlying issue.

4. Choose the next step from what Windows can see

It appears in Disk Management without a letter

Assign a letter and check Explorer. If the volume opens, copy irreplaceable files to another storage location before experimenting further. Once the files are safe, you can investigate why the letter disappeared, but the immediate objective is preserving the readable data.

It appears in Device Manager with an error code but not as a usable volume

Follow the documented resolution for that code, beginning with the driver or hardware-change actions Microsoft lists. Reconnect after each change and check Disk Management. Do not jump to formatting because the device entry exists; a device-level error and a missing volume are different layers.

It appears nowhere on this computer

Repeat the direct-port test and try another computer. If a second computer also cannot see the drive in Disk Management or Device Manager, Windows has no software object on which to perform a drive-letter or partition repair. That pattern makes a connection or hardware problem plausible, but it is not a conclusive diagnosis by itself.

It appears as unallocated or asks to be initialized

Cancel the prompt when previous files matter. Initialization, partition creation and formatting are data-altering operations. Preserve the disk exactly as it is and move to the recovery decision below.

5. Know when to stop Windows troubleshooting

Stop making changes when the drive is absent from both File Explorer and Disk Management after connection checks, or when it repeatedly disappears across ports and computers. Also stop if the files are important and Windows proposes initialization, partition creation or formatting. Those operations can make later recovery harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A qualified data-recovery provider may be appropriate for an unreadable drive containing valuable files. The outcome cannot be promised, and there is no universal recovery procedure that is safe for every failure. Tell the provider exactly what Windows displayed and which actions you did or did not take. Do not buy a replacement drive expecting it to recover the original files: a new drive is only a destination for backups or a substitute after the original data has been dealt with.

6. Safely remove the drive once it works

When the volume is accessible, finish by removing it through Windows rather than simply pulling the plug. Microsoft says this avoids data loss. Select the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media tray icon, choose the USB drive, and wait for the Safe To Remove Hardware notification before disconnecting it. Microsoft’s instructions are in Safely remove hardware in Windows.

If the icon says a device is still in use, close open files and applications that may be reading the drive, then try the eject command again. Disconnecting while Windows is writing can leave recently changed files incomplete even when the drive appeared healthy moments earlier.

Windows 10 and Windows 11: what changes?

The Disk Management access paths and core behavior described here apply to both versions; Microsoft explicitly says Disk Management works the same in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Device Manager’s code-based troubleshooting also applies to both. Windows 10 itself is no longer supported as of October 14, 2025, so a computer that still runs it should be planned for an upgrade or replacement, but that support status does not turn a missing drive letter into a hardware failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Labels and placement around the Start menu can look slightly different after updates, so use the named tools—Disk Management and Device Manager—rather than relying on a particular icon arrangement. The command diskmgmt.msc remains a direct way to open Disk Management.

A compact decision checklist

  • Explorer only: if the drive is missing, check Disk Management before changing anything.
  • Disk Management, no letter: assign a letter to the confirmed USB volume.
  • Disk Management, Offline: bring it online only when the disk is clearly identified and there are no signs of failure.
  • Disk Management, Unallocated: do not create or format a volume if old files may be present.
  • Device Manager error: record the code and use Microsoft’s code-specific steps; use official driver sources.
  • Absent from both tools: retest the port, cable and another computer, then stop if important data is at risk.
  • Accessible again: copy important files and use the Safe To Remove Hardware notification before unplugging.
