How to Fix a USB Drive Not Recognized or Corrupted in Windows 10

A Windows 10 USB drive problem has three likely explanations: a bad connection, a volume that Windows can see but cannot mount, or failing flash hardware. Start with data protection and read-only checks. Do not format, initialize, or repeatedly run repair commands until you decide whether the files need recovery. Then test the drive on another port and computer, inspect Disk Management, assign a letter only to a healthy volume, and use CHKDSK only when you accept its write and data-loss risks.

This order separates file recovery from ordinary access repair. A drive that is absent from Disk Management on several computers, reports the wrong capacity or “No media,” repeatedly disconnects, or freezes Windows is more likely to have a hardware fault than a simple Windows 10 file-system error.

Protect the files before trying a repair

Every repair attempt can change information on the drive. If the contents are irreplaceable, stop before formatting, initializing, creating a new partition, or running a write-repair command. Microsoft notes that disks fail often and recommends regular backups. Its Disk Management guidance also says that, when files are vitally important, you can pay a data-recovery lab to try to recover them.

  • Do not format a RAW, unallocated, or unrecognized volume. Formatting creates a new file system and can overwrite structures needed for recovery.
  • Do not initialize a disk that contains needed files. Initialization writes a disk signature and partition information.
  • Do not keep reconnecting a drive that is clicking, overheating, disappearing, or making Windows freeze. Repeated power cycles can worsen a failing device.
  • Copy files immediately if the drive opens. Start with the most valuable folders and copy them to another disk before experimenting.

CHKDSK also writes changes. Microsoft warns that repairs on FAT file systems usually change the file-allocation table and can cause data loss. Treat CHKDSK as a logical file-system repair, not as a file-recovery tool.

Identify what Windows is actually seeing

What you observe Most useful interpretation Safest next move
Nothing appears in Disk Management Connection, USB power, controller, or physical-media failure is possible. Test another port, cable where applicable, and computer. If it remains absent, stop software repairs.
A normal-looking partition is present but has no drive letter Windows can see the volume but File Explorer has no path to it. Assign a letter after confirming the volume is healthy and important files are backed up.
The file system is shown as RAW Windows cannot interpret the existing file-system metadata. Do not format. Recover important data first; CHKDSK may not be appropriate for a RAW volume.
The disk is unallocated or uninitialized Partition information or a valid disk signature is missing. Do not initialize or create a volume if the old files matter. Consider professional recovery.
The drive reports “No media,” the wrong capacity, or keeps disconnecting The flash controller or memory may be failing. Use another computer only to confirm the symptom, then replace the device or seek a recovery lab.
The drive works on another computer The USB port, host configuration, or Windows installation may be the problem. Repair the affected Windows system separately after confirming the drive itself is readable.

Check the physical connection first

  1. Safely disconnect the drive if Windows still lists it, then reconnect it directly to a different USB port. Prefer a port on the computer rather than an unpowered hub.
  2. If the device uses a detachable cable, try another known-good cable. A USB flash drive normally has no separate cable, but external enclosures and card readers do.
  3. Unplug other high-power USB devices temporarily and reconnect the drive.
  4. Test the drive on a second computer. Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance recommends this comparison. If it fails in the same way on another computer, the problem is less likely to be limited to the original Windows installation.
  5. Note exactly what happens: a connection sound, an entry in File Explorer, an entry in Disk Management, a capacity value, or an error such as “No media.” Those observations determine whether the next step should be recovery, a drive-letter change, or replacement.

Open Disk Management in Windows 10

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Right-click the Start button and select Computer Management. You can also search for Computer Management and choose Run as administrator.
  3. In the left pane, open Storage, then select Disk Management.
  4. Find the USB device by comparing its approximate capacity with the physical drive. Do not select the internal Windows disk by mistake.
  5. Record the disk status, partition status, file-system label, and whether a drive letter is displayed before changing anything.

Disk Management can show a disk that File Explorer cannot. Microsoft explains that an uninitialized disk may lack a valid disk signature. A disk can also be offline, RAW, unallocated, or healthy but missing a letter; each state calls for a different response.

If the volume is healthy but has no drive letter

This is the lowest-risk Disk Management fix, provided the partition is shown as healthy and your important data is backed up.

  1. Right-click the healthy partition area, not the disk-number label.
  2. Select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  3. Choose Add, select an unused letter, and confirm with OK.
  4. Open File Explorer and test the new letter. Copy important files to another disk before further repairs.

If the partition is not shown as healthy, or Windows asks to format it before opening it, cancel the prompt. Formatting is a write operation and is not a safe first response to missing files.

If the disk is offline

An offline status means Windows has deliberately not presented the disk to the system. First verify that you selected the USB device and not an internal disk. If the data is important or the disk is behaving abnormally, document the status and seek recovery advice before making changes. Bringing a stable, correctly identified disk online may restore access, but it does not repair failing flash memory.

If the disk is RAW

RAW means Windows does not recognize a usable file system on the volume. Do not accept a format prompt and do not assume CHKDSK will rebuild the contents. If files matter, make recovery the goal; repeated write attempts can reduce the chance of a successful recovery.

If the disk is unallocated or uninitialized

Unallocated space has no partition that Windows can mount. An uninitialized disk has no usable disk signature or partition information in the way Windows expects. Creating a partition or initializing the disk is appropriate only when you have decided that the existing contents are not needed or already exist in a verified backup. For valuable files, stop and use a recovery service before those operations.

If Disk Management shows “No media” or an implausible capacity

“No media,” a zero or incorrect capacity, severe freezing, and repeated disconnects point away from a normal file-system problem. Try one other port and computer to rule out a host issue, then avoid formatting and repair loops. Replace the drive if the files are backed up; use a professional laboratory if they are not.

Run CHKDSK only for an acceptable logical repair

CHKDSK checks a volume’s file-system structures. It does not repair broken connectors, dead flash cells, a failed USB controller, or a drive that is not visible to Windows. It also requires administrator rights and may need exclusive access to the volume.

Use the conservative command first

  1. Confirm the correct drive letter in File Explorer or Disk Management. Substitute that letter for E: below.
  2. Open Command Prompt as administrator: search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Run chkdsk E: /f.
  4. Read the result. If Windows says the volume is in use, close every window and application using the USB drive, then allow the check to run only if you accept the changes.
  5. When it finishes, safely eject and reconnect the drive, then test whether the files open. Copy recovered files elsewhere immediately.

The /f switch fixes logical errors. CHKDSK may report that it cannot obtain exclusive access; do not force a repair simply to make the message disappear. On FAT volumes, Microsoft warns that the allocation-table changes made during repair can cause data loss.

When, if ever, to use /r

The /r switch tells CHKDSK to locate bad sectors and recover readable information. It is substantially more intensive than a basic logical check and still writes file-system changes. Consider it only after you have decided that a write operation is acceptable, the data is backed up or no longer recoverable by safer means, and the device is stable enough to remain connected. It cannot make physically failing flash memory reliable.

Stop CHKDSK instead of repeating it

  • The drive disappears during the scan.
  • Windows freezes whenever the drive is accessed.
  • The reported capacity changes between connections.
  • The volume is RAW, unallocated, or shown as “No media.”
  • The files are irreplaceable and no recovery copy exists.

In those cases, disconnecting and seeking recovery help is safer than running the command again with different switches.

Repair Windows 10 separately when the USB works elsewhere

If the same drive opens normally on another computer, the USB hardware and file system may be fine while the original Windows installation has a damaged component, update, or recovery configuration. Treat this as a Windows-repair problem rather than a flash-drive repair.

Try System Restore

Use System Restore to return Windows system files and settings to an earlier restore point. This is useful when the USB stopped working after a recent software change. Review the restore point and affected programs before confirming; System Restore is not a substitute for copying personal files.

Remove a recent problematic update

In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history, then use the option to uninstall an available recent update. Only remove an update when the timing matches the USB failure, and restart before testing again.

Use Reset this PC or recovery media as a last resort

Windows offers Reset this PC, manufacturer recovery images, and reinstallation from USB installation media. Read the retention choice carefully: some paths remove applications, and some can remove personal files. Back up the computer first and make sure you are not confusing a Windows installation USB with the problem drive.

Choose the right outcome: recover, restore access, or replace

Your goal Appropriate path What to avoid
Recover irreplaceable files Stop writing, document the symptoms, and consult a professional recovery lab. Formatting, initialization, repeated CHKDSK runs, or creating a new partition.
Restore access to backed-up files Test ports and computers, inspect Disk Management, assign a letter to a healthy volume, then consider chkdsk E: /f. Using /r automatically or repairing a RAW volume without a recovery decision.
Replace a failed device Use a new USB flash drive and restore the files from a verified backup. Trusting a drive that reports the wrong capacity, “No media,” or repeated disconnects.
Fix the host Windows installation Use System Restore, remove a matching recent update, or use Reset/recovery media with the retention choice understood. Erasing the USB drive when the same drive works on another computer.

After access is restored: make the next failure less costly

  • Keep a second copy of important files on another disk or through Windows Backup/File History.
  • Create and store Windows recovery media before the computer develops a startup or system-file problem.
  • Use Safely Remove Hardware before unplugging the drive, especially while copying.
  • Replace a drive that has shown wrong capacity, “No media,” unexplained disconnects, or severe freezes instead of using it for the only copy of a file.
  • Label multiple removable disks clearly so you do not format the wrong device in Disk Management.
