When a USB-C monitor dock will not charge or detect a laptop, first check that the laptop’s USB-C port supports the dock’s required features, then verify the dock’s own power and the correct host cable. Charging, dock detection, and monitor video use separate paths, so isolate the failing function before replacing anything.
Identify what is failing
Record the laptop model, dock model, operating system, whether the dock has a separate power adapter, and which functions fail: laptop charging, dock or peripheral detection, monitor video, or all three. These details matter because remedies such as a firmware update, power reset, or display-port workaround are model-specific.

Check laptop and dock compatibility
A USB-C connector describes its shape, not whether its port supports laptop charging or video. Check the exact laptop port specifications and the dock’s compatibility notes. For example, HP says its USB-C Dock G5 requires the host USB-C port to support DisplayPort Alt Mode for video; charging also depends on the notebook implementing the relevant USB-C specifications. Thunderbolt and USB4 ports can support different configurations, so confirm the actual laptop-and-dock combination in their manuals.

If the dock has no power indicator
Connect the dock’s specified AC adapter to a working outlet and to the dock, then check the indicator as described in the dock manual. HP’s Thunderbolt 3 dock troubleshooting guidance identifies a missing AC connection as a possible cause of an unlit power light. Resolve the dock’s AC-power problem before troubleshooting the laptop connection.

If the dock is powered but the laptop does not charge
Reconnect the host cable and check whether the laptop reports charging. Verify the dock’s supplied adapter and rated output against its manual; do not substitute an arbitrary adapter. Charging depends on the capabilities of the dock, its power supply, cable, and laptop together, so a USB-C plug alone does not establish that the laptop will receive the power it needs. HP also lists a faulty charging cable as a possible cause in its Thunderbolt 3 guidance.
One narrow exception: for the exact HP USB-C Dock G5 Modern Standby Connected issue documented for specified Elite, EliteBook, Dragonfly, and ZBook G9 systems, HP lists holding the laptop’s power button for 12 seconds to reset the embedded controller. This is not a general USB-C dock reset; use it only if the laptop and dock match HP’s specified charging notice.

Inspect the host cable and connectors
Check for loose, dirty, bent, or visibly damaged connectors and ports. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions about disconnecting power before inspection. Reseat the cable straight without twisting or levering it. Lenovo advises using the correct cable bundled with its dock in its dock troubleshooting guidance. A replacement USB-C cable must support the data, video, and power functions required by your exact setup; a connector that fits is not enough.

Reset the connection and check detection
- Disconnect the dock’s host cable from the laptop, wait briefly, and reconnect it.
- If the dock or its peripherals remain missing, restart the laptop and check again.
- For the specific Thunderbolt controller or USB host errors HP describes for its G6 dock, disconnect and wait 20 seconds before reconnecting. HP ties that interval to errors that can follow reconnecting too quickly; it is not a universal wait time for every dock.
HP’s G6 Dock troubleshooting guidance also addresses authentication and timing problems with reconnecting or restarting. Apply such guidance only when it covers your dock and symptom.
If the laptop detects the dock but the monitor stays blank
Check the display’s basic connection
- Turn on the monitor and select the input matching the cable connected to the dock.
- Reseat the monitor cable at both ends and test one monitor at a time.
- In the operating system’s display settings, select the intended mode: Extend, Duplicate, or second-screen-only.
- Use a dock output that its manual says supports your host connection, and confirm that the laptop supports video over the USB-C port in use.
Lenovo’s dock guidance recommends checking monitor detection, reconnecting or power-cycling the monitor, using an appropriate cable, and checking supported resolution.

Check output-port and display limits
Dock outputs are not interchangeable in every configuration. HP documents cases on particular G6 models where a USB-C or Thunderbolt downstream display fails with a non-Thunderbolt host and multiple displays; moving that monitor to a supported DisplayPort, HDMI, or alternate USB-C output is a documented workaround for the named models. Consult your own dock’s port and multi-monitor specifications rather than applying that workaround to another dock.
Recommended Free Tools
If a monitor appears intermittently or stops working after sleep, test a lower resolution or refresh rate and compare the setup with the dock’s supported monitor combinations. HP’s G6 guidance documents bandwidth limits that can affect resolution or refresh rate, as well as sleep and BIOS settings for specific configurations. Do not change BIOS options or install dock firmware based on instructions for another dock family. Check the manufacturer’s current firmware, laptop BIOS, and graphics or USB-C drivers for your exact models, and follow its update sequence with power kept stable.

Use the symptom to choose the next check
| Symptom | Start with | Likely area to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Dock has no power indicator | Outlet, dock AC connection, and specified adapter | Dock power supply or outlet |
| Dock lights up but laptop does not charge | Host compatibility, correct cable, dock and laptop power specifications, and any notice for the exact models | USB-C power support, cable, or model-specific issue |
| Laptop does not detect the dock or its peripherals | Reseat and restart; allow de-enumeration where relevant; inspect the connector and verify host-port support | Connection, enumeration, driver, or port |
| Laptop detects dock but monitor is blank | Monitor input, display mode, host video support, dock output, and video cable | Display routing or capability |
| One of several monitors is blank | Test one display and check supported port combinations, resolution, and refresh rate | Bandwidth or unsupported port arrangement |
| Failure follows sleep or resume | Reconnect or restart, then check whether a manufacturer notice covers the exact models | Model- or operating-system-specific resume behavior |
When replacing a component makes sense
Replace only what the checks implicate. If the dock works with another known-compatible host cable and your original does not, a cable replacement may be appropriate—but verify the replacement supports the exact dock’s display, data, and power requirements. Consider a power adapter or dock only after checking its model-specific specifications, compatibility, warranty, and service options. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal replacement dock or generic price.
