Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A USB-C plug only describes the connector shape; it does not guarantee video output, high-speed data, or enough power. To restore a monitor or external drive, isolate the computer port, cable, hub, peripheral, power path, and operating-system settings in that order. The safest approach is to bypass the hub first, then reconnect one device at a time.
Start with a safe, ten-minute check
Write down the computer make and exact model, operating system, hub model, monitor input, drive type, and which devices fail. Compatibility is model-specific, so these details matter if you eventually need a replacement.

- Turn on the monitor and select the input connected to the hub. A monitor on the wrong HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C input can look like a hub failure.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the hub’s upstream USB-C plug at the computer. Reseat the monitor cable at both ends and reconnect the drive cable.
- Disconnect unused USB devices from the hub. Leave only the monitor or only the drive attached for the first test.
- If the hub has a power input, connect its specified AC adapter. If the computer is running on battery, connect the computer to power where practical.
- For a Pixelbook, leave the hub connected, unplug the monitor from the hub, and plug it back in. Google documents this reconnect sequence for hub display problems.
Do not format an external drive merely because it is absent in File Explorer or Finder. First determine whether the computer detects it when connected directly.
Use the hub bypass test to locate the fault
The most informative test is to remove the hub from the connection entirely. A peripheral that works directly but fails through the hub points toward the hub, its upstream cable, a port-capability mismatch, or the hub’s power path. That result narrows the fault area; it does not by itself prove that the hub is defective.

- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
Test the monitor directly
- Disconnect the hub.
- Connect the monitor directly to a computer port that supports the monitor’s required video mode. Use the correct cable or a compatible single-purpose adapter.
- Select the monitor’s matching input and wait for the operating system to enumerate it.
If the monitor works directly, leave it connected while you test the hub later. If it fails directly as well, investigate the monitor input, video cable, computer port, graphics settings, and monitor power before blaming the hub.
Test the drive directly
- Disconnect the hub and connect the drive directly to the computer.
- Use the drive’s supplied cable, or another cable explicitly rated for data. Some USB-C cables carry charging but not every data feature.
- If the drive has its own power supply, connect that supply and switch it on.
A drive that appears directly but disappears through the hub makes the hub path the next suspect. A drive that is missing in both arrangements requires checks of the drive, its cable and power, the host port, and the operating system’s device or storage utilities.
Reintroduce one peripheral at a time
Once direct tests succeed, reconnect the hub and attach just the monitor. Then remove the monitor and attach just the drive. Finally, attach both. This sequence identifies whether one peripheral, the combination, or the hub’s available power and bandwidth triggers the failure.
Confirm that every part of the video path supports display output
Video through USB-C requires compatible support at every link: the computer port, the hub or adapter, the video cable, and the monitor input. A USB-C port may provide charging or USB data without sending a display signal. Check the exact computer and hub documentation rather than relying on the connector shape or the number of ports.
Check the computer port
Look for documentation identifying DisplayPort Alternate Mode, Thunderbolt 3 or 4, or another display-capable mode for the specific port. Some computers have several USB-C ports with different capabilities. Microsoft’s Windows guidance specifically calls for checking DisplayPort Alternate Mode on the PC, display, and cable and using the computer’s correct USB-C port.
Check the hub and cable
The hub must advertise the video output you need, such as HDMI or DisplayPort, and its upstream cable must carry that mode. A cable can fit physically while lacking the required video or data features. If the hub uses a detachable upstream cable, try the cable supplied with the hub before substituting another one.
Check the monitor’s requirements
Record the monitor’s connector, target resolution, and refresh rate. A path that works at a lower resolution may fail at the monitor’s maximum setting if the hub, cable, or computer cannot provide the required bandwidth. The computer’s own display limit still applies even when a hub has several video connectors.

Reset the graphics driver
If the monitor had been working and suddenly stopped, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. The screen may blink and Windows may play a notification sound while the graphics driver resets. Restart the computer if the display does not return. If the problem persists, use the appropriate graphics-driver rollback or reinstallation procedure for the computer.
Inspect USB errors
When Windows reports that a USB device is not recognized, open Device Manager and inspect the affected device for its error code. Record the code before removing or reinstalling anything; it can distinguish a driver or enumeration problem from a missing power or connection.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If the computer still runs Windows 10 in 2026, do not assume that a missing update will provide the same security or hardware support as a supported release. The display checks above remain useful, but follow the computer maker’s supported operating-system guidance.
Fix display detection on a Mac
- Open System Settings > Displays (or System Preferences > Displays on older macOS).
- Use Detect Displays if that control is shown.
- Confirm the monitor’s input selection and brightness.
- Disconnect and reconnect the monitor and its power.
- Put the Mac to sleep, wake it, and restart if detection still fails.
Apple’s guidance recommends testing a display directly on the Mac as a hub or dock diagnostic. The adapter or hub must comply with the display path required by the Mac, such as DisplayPort Alternate Mode, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4.
On a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS may ask you to allow the display accessory to connect. Approve the accessory only when you recognize the device. Update macOS and the display’s firmware where the manufacturer provides an applicable update.
Display count, maximum resolution, and refresh rate vary by Mac model and by the combination of attached displays, cables, adapters, and hubs. Check the exact Mac specification before treating a second or high-refresh-rate display as a hub failure.
Restore USB storage detection
Eliminate a charge-only or unsuitable cable
Use the drive’s supplied cable whenever possible. USB-C compatibility is not uniform: a cable may support charging but not the data speed or other feature required by the drive. Replace the cable only with one rated for the drive’s data requirement.

Microsoft similarly advises supplying independent power to a USB device when possible, connecting the computer to power instead of relying on its battery, and removing unused USB devices when the computer cannot provide enough power.
Check the operating system without formatting
If the drive works directly, use the operating system’s device and storage utilities to see whether it is detected but not mounted. If it fails directly, investigate the drive’s cable, power supply, and health before changing partitions or formatting. Formatting can destroy data and does not repair a hub that lacks the necessary power or data path.
Understand hub power and throughput limits
A hub shares the computer port’s available power and bandwidth among its attached devices. Connecting a monitor, mechanical drive, flash drive, and other accessories at once can expose limits that are not visible with one low-power device.
A model-specific Surface example
Microsoft’s Surface USB-C Travel Hub documentation illustrates why the exact model matters. With a 5V/1.5A (7.5 W) host port, only one of that hub’s USB ports can be used at a time, and that port is limited to USB 2.0 speeds of 480 Mbps. With a 5V/3A (15 W) host port, both USB ports can operate at USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds of 10 Gbps. Those figures describe that documented hub and its stated host-port configurations; they are not universal USB-C hub limits.
The same Surface documentation says that hub’s USB-C port does not support video output. A USB-C socket on a hub therefore cannot be assumed to be a display connector.
Reduce the load during testing
- Connect the hub’s AC adapter or power input.
- Connect the computer to wall power.
- Disconnect unused USB devices.
- Test the monitor and drive separately before using both together.
- Use a self-powered hub for devices that have substantial or sustained power needs.
Platform-specific recovery steps
Surface computers
Surface USB-C port behavior varies by model. When a USB device is not recognized through a hub, Microsoft recommends plugging it directly into the Surface, reconnecting it, trying the supplied cable, and providing the device’s own power supply where applicable. Confirm the individual Surface model’s port and display specifications before buying a replacement hub.
Pixelbook
Keep the hub connected, unplug the monitor from the hub, and reconnect it. If the display remains absent, Google’s guidance suggests a hard reset of the Pixelbook after the connection checks.

Mac computers generally
Bypass the hub, use Displays detection, reconnect display power, restart, approve a display accessory on Apple silicon when prompted, and verify the Mac’s model-specific display count and resolution limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you are connecting more than one monitor
Prove that one external display works before adding a second. The computer’s graphics adapter may limit the number of independent displays regardless of the hub’s connector count. A passive splitter duplicates one signal; it does not create two independent desktops.
For Mac systems, the permitted display count and supported resolution or refresh rate depend on the Mac model and the complete connected configuration. For Windows systems, check the graphics adapter’s capability and the computer maker’s specifications. Test each monitor alone, then add the next monitor while keeping resolution and refresh settings within the documented limits.
Decide whether the hub, cable, or host is the problem
| Result of the test | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Monitor and drive both work directly, but neither works through the hub | The hub path, upstream cable, host-port capability, or power path is implicated; this does not prove one component has failed. | Verify video mode, USB data requirements, power input, and the hub’s port map with its documentation. |
| Monitor works directly; drive fails directly and through the hub | Investigate the drive, its cable, its power supply, the computer port, and operating-system detection. | Try the supplied drive cable and independent power; inspect Device Manager or storage utilities. |
| Drive works directly; monitor fails directly and through the hub | Investigate display-mode support, monitor input, display cable, graphics settings, and host display limits. | Confirm DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt requirements and test the monitor’s input. |
| Both peripherals work through the hub separately but fail together | Combined power, bandwidth, or display-count limits are likely. | Power the hub, remove unused devices, lower display demands temporarily, and check model specifications. |
| Neither peripheral works directly | The hub is not the first suspect. | Check the computer port, peripheral cables, device power, drivers, and the peripherals themselves. |
Choose replacement hardware only after the diagnosis
Replace a hub when it lacks a capability your computer supports or when controlled tests isolate a repeatable hub-path fault. Replace a cable when the existing cable lacks the required video or data feature or is physically damaged. Add an AC adapter or self-powered hub when the tests demonstrate insufficient bus power.
Before buying, compare these specifications against the exact computer and peripherals:
- The computer’s USB-C or Thunderbolt features on the specific port you will use.
- Whether the hub supports the required video mode and monitor connector.
- The monitor’s target resolution and refresh rate.
- The computer’s maximum number of independent external displays.
- USB data speed required by the drive and the hub’s actual port speed.
- Whether the drive needs separate power.
- The hub’s power input and pass-through behavior.
- Whether the upstream and peripheral cables are rated for the needed video and data functions.
Do not buy a hub solely because it has more USB-C sockets or a familiar plug. A hub cannot add video output to a host port that does not support video, and it cannot override the computer’s display-count limit.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop swapping parts when you have a reproducible result: for example, a monitor and drive that work directly, fail through one hub with known-good cables, and continue failing after the hub is powered and tested alone. At that point, document the exact port, cable, peripheral, power arrangement, and operating-system result for the hub manufacturer or a replacement decision.

If the peripheral fails direct connection, keep the hub out of the chain while you resolve that separate problem. If the computer port itself fails with multiple known-good peripherals, seek computer-specific service rather than repeatedly replacing hubs.
