Most USB recognition failures have a simple cause: the phone is locked, the accessory or adapter is incompatible, the cable carries power but not data, or the connector is dirty or damaged. First identify what you connected and what you expect—an accessory plugged into the phone, or the phone plugged into a computer—because the required permissions and USB modes differ.
Unlock the phone, disconnect and reconnect the accessory, then work through the task-specific checks below. Use your exact phone model and software version when a menu name or compatibility requirement is mentioned; Apple, Google and Samsung apply different controls to different devices.

Start by identifying the USB task
“USB accessory” can describe several different connections. A USB flash drive, mouse or keyboard makes the phone act as the USB host. A phone connected to a computer is a file-transfer connection. Charging-only behavior is another possibility. Use this table to classify the symptom before changing settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| What is connected? | What you expect | Checks that matter first |
|---|---|---|
| USB flash drive, mouse, keyboard or other accessory to the phone | The phone should mount the drive, show an accessory prompt, or respond to the input device | Phone unlocked, correct connector or OTG adapter, phone model supports the accessory, clean ports |
| Phone to a Windows, macOS or other computer | The computer should show the phone for file access | USB data-capable cable, unlock prompt, file-transfer mode rather than charging-only mode |
| Phone or accessory only charging | Battery charging without data or accessory features | Cable may be power-only or damaged; the USB data permission or mode may not be enabled |
| Apple device with an “Accessory may not be supported” alert | The accessory should be accepted by the iPhone or iPad | Compatibility, certification, connector condition, software version and port debris |
A computer can therefore detect that a phone is charging without displaying its files. Charging proves that some power contacts work; it does not prove that the cable, permission and USB mode support data.

Use this safe troubleshooting order
- Unlock the phone before connecting. Disconnect the accessory, unlock the screen, and reconnect it while the phone is active. Apple states that a locked iPhone or iPad may not communicate with an accessory; if it remains unrecognized, disconnect it, unlock the device and reconnect it as described in Apple’s USB-accessory guidance. Storage accessories still require the device to be unlocked before use.
- Read and approve the prompt. Look for an accessory-approval, USB-data or “Allow access to phone data” message. Declining the prompt, or letting it time out, can leave the connection in a restricted state. Unplugging and reconnecting while unlocked usually brings the prompt back.
- Confirm the intended mode. For a computer connection, select a file-transfer mode when the phone offers one. A charging notification alone does not expose files. On Galaxy devices, the relevant choice is usually Transferring files / Android Auto, although the exact label can vary by model, software and app version.
- Check the connector arrangement. Match USB-C, Lightning or another phone connector to the accessory. A USB-A drive normally needs a USB-A-to-USB-C OTG adapter when connected to a compatible USB-C phone. An adapter changes the physical plug; it cannot add OTG support or make an unsupported accessory compatible.
- Inspect and reseat every connection. Disconnect both ends, look for lint, corrosion, bent contacts or cracked housings, and reconnect firmly without forcing the plug. Check the phone port and the accessory connector, not just the cable.
- Try a known-good cable, adapter or accessory. Use one that is confirmed to support the required data function. Test a different compatible drive or input device, or connect the original accessory to another compatible phone. Swapping one component at a time identifies whether the fault follows the accessory, adapter, cable or phone.
- Restart and retest. A restart clears a temporary USB service or permission state. After rebooting, unlock the phone before making the test connection again.
- Stop if the port is physically damaged. Do not scrape contacts, force an ill-fitting plug or continue using a connector that becomes hot. If known-good, compatible equipment still fails, arrange manufacturer or authorized repair support.
Fixes for iPhone and iPad
Allow wired accessories while the device is unlocked
On supported iPhone and iPad software, Apple places the control at Settings > Privacy & Security > Wired Accessories. The available choices depend on the device and connector. Review that setting, unlock the device, disconnect the accessory and reconnect it. Apple’s procedure is explicit: “If the accessory is still not recognised after you’ve unlocked your device: disconnect it from your device, unlock your device, then reconnect the accessory.” See Allow USB and other accessories to connect to your iPhone or iPad for the model-specific behavior.
If the accessory works only after unlocking, that is a security restriction rather than a failed cable. Leave the device unlocked during the initial connection and avoid assuming that a setting available on one iPhone or iPad appears on every model.
Resolve an “Accessory may not be supported” alert
Apple lists several possible causes for this alert: the accessory may be damaged, unsupported or uncertified; it may be incompatible with the particular iPhone or iPad; or the connector may be dirty or damaged. Follow Apple’s checks in this order:

- Try another compatible cable or accessory to determine whether the original item is defective.
These steps and the warning’s possible causes are documented in Apple’s “Accessory may not be supported” support page. If the warning appears when no accessory is attached, or a known-good compatible accessory fails after the checks, Apple advises service rather than repeated reconnection.
Fixes for Android phones
Pixel 6 and later: check USB Protection behavior
Google documents a USB Protection feature for supported Pixel 6 and later devices. It can block new USB data connections while the screen is locked and may ask you to unlock the phone before permitting the connection. This is a security behavior, not a universal Android setting: do not expect the same menu or wording on every Android manufacturer’s phone. Details and the supported-device scope are in Google’s USB Protection guidance.
For a Pixel accessory that is not recognized, unlock the phone, reconnect it and respond to the prompt. If the connection still fails, continue with the cable, adapter, port and compatibility tests rather than changing unrelated security settings.

Galaxy phone to computer: select file transfer
When a Galaxy phone is connected to a computer, unlock it and tap Allow if the phone asks for access to phone data. If the computer still shows only charging, open the USB notification on the phone and choose Transferring files / Android Auto. Samsung notes that menu paths and labels vary with the Galaxy model, software version and app version; use the wording shown on your device. The complete procedure is in Samsung’s USB connection-mode instructions.

A successful charging icon with no files in the computer’s file browser usually indicates that power is available but permission or file-transfer mode is not. Recheck the prompt and mode before replacing hardware.
Galaxy phone or tablet with a USB flash drive
For a USB-A flash drive, Samsung describes using a Type-A-to-Type-C adapter that supports USB On-The-Go (OTG). The Galaxy phone or tablet must also support OTG. Connect the adapter and drive fully, unlock the device, and look for the storage notification or file-management entry.

If the drive is absent, Samsung recommends checking the drive and phone port, reseating the connection, restarting the device, and testing another compatible drive or adapter. Not every USB drive is detected correctly by every Galaxy model. Follow the model-specific checks in Samsung’s USB flash-drive troubleshooting guide and its USB-C cable and adapter guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the cable, adapter and ports
Do not confuse charging capability with data capability
USB cables can be wired for charging only, can support data at different speeds, or can be damaged so that only their power conductors still work. For a computer transfer, use a cable explicitly intended for USB data and suited to the phone’s connector. When testing a charging problem, Google recommends confirming cable and adapter connections, checking the port for debris and trying another cable or power adapter. Its Pixel charging troubleshooting page says a “Check charging accessory” notification can indicate a damaged or unsupported cable or adapter. That charging advice does not establish that a particular cable supports file transfer, so verify the cable’s data specification separately.
Inspect both ports safely
Use a bright light to look into the phone port and accessory socket. Visible lint, corrosion, bent contacts, looseness or a cracked housing can interrupt power or data. Disconnect everything before inspection. Remove only loose, visible debris gently; never force a tool into the port or bend contacts. Apple links debris and port damage to unsupported-accessory alerts, and Samsung directs users to a service center when a USB port is damaged.

If a connector fits unusually tightly, sits at an angle or disconnects when lightly moved, stop using it. Repeated insertion can worsen mechanical damage and turn an intermittent recognition problem into a permanent port failure.
Use a decision table to isolate the failed part
| Observed symptom | Most useful next test | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens when an accessory is connected while the screen is locked | Unlock, disconnect and reconnect | If it then works, the lock-state USB restriction was the cause. |
| Phone charges from a computer but no files appear | Approve data access and select the phone’s file-transfer mode; then test a known-good data cable | Charging is functioning, while permission, mode or cable data wiring is not. |
| USB-A flash drive works on another device but not the phone | Verify OTG support, use a compatible OTG adapter and try another adapter | The phone may lack OTG support, or the adapter/connector may be incompatible. |
| Several known-good compatible accessories fail on the same phone | Inspect the phone port and test after a restart | A damaged or contaminated phone port, or a software/device fault, is more likely than a single bad accessory. |
| Only one cable or accessory fails while others work | Test the failed item on another compatible phone or computer | The original cable, adapter or accessory is likely defective or unsupported. |
| “Accessory may not be supported” appears with no accessory attached | Check the port for debris or damage and arrange service if the alert persists | The device may be sensing a port fault; repeated reconnection will not repair it. |
Choosing an OTG adapter or replacement cable
Buy hardware only after identifying the failed link. For a USB-A accessory and a USB-C phone that supports OTG, search for a USB-C OTG adapter or USB-A to USB-C OTG adapter. Confirm all three points in the listing or manufacturer documentation:
- The adapter’s phone-side connector matches your phone.
- The adapter explicitly supports USB OTG/data, not charging alone.
- Your exact phone model supports OTG and the accessory’s power and storage requirements.
For phone-to-computer troubleshooting, choose a compatible USB data cable with the correct connectors and stated data support. Charging wattage by itself is not a useful comparison for file transfer. A USB-C flash drive can remove the USB-A adapter from a storage setup, but it still must be compatible with the phone and may require the phone to be unlocked before access.

When to seek manufacturer or authorized service
Arrange support when any of these conditions applies:
- The phone port is visibly bent, corroded, loose or physically broken.
- An unsupported-accessory warning appears with nothing connected.
- Multiple known-good, compatible cables and accessories fail after the phone is unlocked and restarted.
- The connector or phone becomes hot, smells unusual or repeatedly disconnects.
- The phone was exposed to liquid or the failure began after physical impact.
Provide the technician with the phone’s exact model and software version, the accessory type, connector types, whether charging works, and which known-good combinations you tested. That information distinguishes a compatibility issue from a port or device fault and avoids unnecessary accessory purchases.
