A UGREEN NAS that is missing from an app, browser, or computer does not necessarily have a hardware fault. Work through the network layers in order: power and Ethernet link, router-issued IP address, local reachability, discovery and name resolution, then file-sharing services and firewall rules. The router’s client list and a direct-IP test quickly show which layer is failing.

Identify exactly what “doesn’t appear” means

There are several different failures that users describe as a UGREEN NAS being invisible. The correct fix depends on which one you have:

Symptom Most useful area to check Next action
No lights, or abnormal blinking Power or incomplete boot Check the power supply, outlet and the LED behavior documented for your model.
NAS is absent from the router’s connected-device list Ethernet link, router port, power or network isolation Reseat or replace-test the cable, try another port and confirm LAN activity.
Router sees the NAS, but the computer does not Subnet, VPN, guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, firewall or discovery Compare network addresses and test the NAS by IP address.
Direct IP access works, but hostname or discovery does not Name resolution, Bonjour/mDNS or blocked discovery traffic Use the IP temporarily and review discovery and firewall settings.
The UGREEN NAS app says “No device found” Local discovery and app network conditions Put the phone or computer on the same main LAN and check VPN, VLAN and isolation settings.
The NAS appears, but shared folders fail SMB/NFS/WebDAV service, permissions or service-specific firewall rules Enable only the protocol your client needs and verify account access.

UGREEN’s troubleshooting guide, dated 24 March 2026, says a “No device found” message is usually caused by a network or configuration issue rather than a failed NAS. That is a useful starting assumption, not a guarantee: hardware remains possible when the unit will not boot or establish a physical link. (UGREEN troubleshooting guide)

1. Confirm power and a complete boot

Check the supply and outlet

  1. Make sure the NAS power adapter is firmly seated in the NAS and the wall outlet or surge protector.
  2. Try the outlet with another device if there is any doubt about power.
  3. Allow the NAS time to complete startup before judging discovery. A device list can remain empty while the operating system is still booting.

No light, a light that never reaches the model’s normal ready state, or unusual blinking warrants model-specific LED guidance. UGREEN notes that LED meanings vary by model, so do not treat a color as conclusive without checking the documentation for your exact enclosure. A missing discovery entry alone is not evidence that the unit has failed.

2. Verify the wired Ethernet link

Reseat and isolate the cable path

  1. Unplug the Ethernet cable at both the NAS and the router or switch, then reconnect each end until it is fully latched.
  2. Look for link or activity indicators on the NAS and the router/switch port.
  3. Move the cable to another known-working LAN port.
  4. If possible, test with a known-good spare cable. Use an existing spare first; buy a replacement only if this test points to the original cable.

UGREEN describes white flashing as generally indicating activity and orange flashing as potentially indicating a connection or link issue, but the exact interpretation is model-dependent. If there is no link at either end after a cable and port test, concentrate on the physical path before changing software settings.

What the router list tells you

Open your router’s administration page or mobile app and find Connected devices, Clients or DHCP clients. Look for a UGREEN name, a hostname you recognize, or the NAS’s MAC address. If the NAS is missing, record that result: it means the device has not successfully presented a usable connection to the router, or the router is placing it behind a separate network.

When the NAS is absent, reseat or test the cable and port, confirm power, and check whether the router has guest-network or isolation rules affecting that port. Do not move immediately to SMB or app troubleshooting; those services cannot be reached until the NAS has a local connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Find and record the NAS’s current IP address

If the router sees the NAS, open its client details and copy the current IPv4 address, such as 192.168.1.42. The address may change after a reboot or lease renewal unless you reserve it later. You can also review the address in UGOS under the network-connections section, where the exact label can vary by version.

Do not assume an old bookmark or a printed setup note still points to the NAS. A changed DHCP address is a common reason a browser or mapped share appears to stop working even though the NAS is healthy.

4. Make sure the computer and NAS share a usable LAN

Compare address, subnet and gateway

On the computer, inspect its active network connection and note its IP address, subnet mask or prefix, and default gateway. Compare those values with the NAS address shown by the router. A wired NAS and a computer on Wi-Fi normally communicate when both are on the same main LAN.

For example, a computer at 192.168.1.20 with a /24 (255.255.255.0) subnet can normally reach a NAS at 192.168.1.42 on the same gateway. A computer at 192.168.50.20 is on a different subnet and may need routing rules that many home networks do not provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove common isolation barriers

  • Guest Wi-Fi: guest networks commonly block access to wired clients even while internet access works.
  • Client or AP isolation: a router setting can prevent Wi-Fi devices from reaching one another.
  • VLANs or multiple SSIDs: separate segments need explicit routing and firewall permissions for NAS access and discovery.
  • VPNs: a full-tunnel VPN can send local traffic away from the LAN or change name-resolution behavior. Disconnect it briefly for a controlled test.

UGREEN’s app guidance also assumes the app device and NAS are on the same local network for automatic discovery. Place the phone or laptop on the main household LAN, not a guest SSID, before concluding that the app is broken. (UGREEN NAS app and discovery guidance)

5. Test the NAS directly by IP address

Browser test

Enter the NAS IP address in a browser using the management URL and port specified for your UGOS installation. If the login page loads by IP, the NAS is reachable and the problem is probably discovery, hostname resolution, an app condition, or a file-service setting rather than a dead device.

Ping test, with the right interpretation

From Windows, open Command Prompt and run:

ping 192.168.1.42

On macOS or Linux, run the same command in Terminal. Replace the example address with the one recorded from the router.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
  • Replies support the conclusion that the computer can reach that local address.
  • A timeout does not prove the NAS is offline. A wrong address, host firewall, VLAN rule, guest isolation or ICMP filtering can produce the same result.
  • If the browser works while ping times out, leave ICMP alone and troubleshoot the service or firewall path you actually need.

If neither the browser nor other local tests work, verify that the address was copied correctly, that the computer is on the intended LAN, and that the router is not showing a stale client entry. Rebooting both router and NAS can refresh leases, but do it only after recording the current address and any relevant settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Repair discovery and hostname access

Use UGREEN’s local setup discovery page

During setup or when the address is unknown, open find.ugnas.com from a device on the same local network. This is a discovery method, not a substitute for fixing a blocked or segmented LAN. If it finds the NAS while the app does not, compare the app device’s Wi-Fi/VPN state and update or restart the app.

When IP works but the hostname fails

A hostname depends on local name resolution; automatic browsing can additionally depend on Bonjour/mDNS or related discovery traffic. If http://192.168.1.42 (using the management scheme and port shown by your NAS) works but a name such as the NAS hostname does not:

  1. Continue using the IP as a temporary way to administer the device.
  2. Check that the computer and NAS remain on the same LAN and that no VPN is intercepting local DNS or multicast traffic.
  3. Review router DNS and local-device naming behavior.
  4. Review Bonjour/mDNS or other discovery settings relevant to your operating system and access method.
  5. Check firewall rules for discovery traffic rather than disabling every firewall.

A NAS can therefore be healthy and reachable while remaining absent from a “Network” browser or app list. Discovery visibility is an additional service, not a reliable hardware test.

7. Check the file service and permissions

Finding the management page does not automatically make shared folders available. Choose the protocol that matches the client:

Client need What to verify
Windows or general network-folder browsing SMB is enabled, the share exists, the account has permission, and SMB traffic is allowed on the trusted LAN.
Unix/Linux or a specialized workflow NFS is enabled only if the client uses NFS, with an allowed export and suitable host permissions.
Browser-based or application transfer WebDAV is enabled only when required, with its account permissions and service port allowed.

Do not enable every protocol “just in case.” Extra services increase the attack surface and can make it harder to identify which rule is failing. Check the share’s user or group permissions as well as the service’s global enable switch. A visible NAS with inaccessible folders usually indicates an authentication, authorization or service-firewall problem, not a discovery problem.

8. Inspect firewalls without creating a security problem

Check all three possible enforcement points

  • Computer firewall: permit the required NAS management or file-sharing traffic on the private/trusted LAN profile.
  • NAS firewall: inspect UGOS rules for the management interface and the specific SMB, NFS or WebDAV service in use.
  • Router firewall or isolation: verify that traffic between the relevant wired and Wi-Fi segments is allowed and that multicast discovery is not filtered where your setup requires it.

UGREEN’s firewall guidance, dated 23 June 2025, explains that blocked discovery traffic can make a NAS browse-invisible while direct IP access still works. Add a narrow allow rule for the trusted LAN and required service instead of turning off protection globally. If you temporarily relax a rule for diagnosis, restore it immediately after the test. (UGREEN NAS firewall guide)

Use a controlled firewall test

  1. Record the current rule and network profile.
  2. Permit the single management or file service needed from the local subnet.
  3. Retest by IP, then retest discovery or the share.
  4. If access returns, keep the scoped rule and remove any broad temporary exception.

If changing a firewall makes no difference, restore the original setting and continue with subnet, VPN, service and permissions checks. A firewall change that does not affect the symptom is evidence against that particular rule, not a reason to leave security disabled.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

9. Make the fix survive the next reboot

Reserve the NAS’s DHCP address

Once access is restored, create a DHCP reservation in the router for the NAS’s MAC address, if your router supports it. This keeps the local IP stable without manually configuring a potentially conflicting static address on the NAS. The exact menu may be called Address reservation, DHCP binding or Static lease.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the network stack maintainable

  • Document the NAS hostname, reserved IP, router segment and the services your clients actually use.
  • Keep UGOS/NAS software and router firmware current using the vendor’s release guidance.
  • Keep a known-good Ethernet cable available for diagnosis.
  • After changing VLAN, VPN or Wi-Fi settings, retest both direct IP access and discovery; they can fail independently.

10. Escalate with useful evidence

If the NAS still cannot be reached after power, cable, port, router address, subnet, isolation, direct-IP, discovery, service and firewall checks, collect the facts before contacting support:

  • Whether the NAS powers on and what the model-specific LEDs do.
  • Whether the router lists the NAS and the IP address it assigns.
  • The computer’s IP, subnet/prefix and gateway, with public addresses removed.
  • Whether ping replies, whether the management page opens by IP, and whether only hostname discovery fails.
  • Which client (Windows, macOS, iOS or Android) and which service (SMB, NFS or WebDAV) is affected.
  • Any recent router, VPN, VLAN, firewall or UGOS change.

Then use UGREEN’s official NAS support and model-specific resources: UGREEN NAS support. Model-specific LED behavior, ports and recovery procedures take precedence over generic advice.

Quick decision path

  1. No power or no normal boot indication: resolve the supply, outlet and model-specific boot issue.
  2. No router entry: test cable, port, link indicators, power and isolation.
  3. Router entry but no direct IP access: verify the address, subnet, VPN, VLAN, guest Wi-Fi and firewall path.
  4. Direct IP access works but app or hostname fails: troubleshoot discovery, DNS/name resolution, Bonjour/mDNS and discovery firewall rules.
  5. Management works but folders fail: enable only the needed file service and correct share permissions and service rules.
  6. Everything works until the address changes: add a DHCP reservation and update saved bookmarks or mappings.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t the UGREEN NAS app find my NAS when the router can?

The router entry proves that the NAS obtained a local connection, but app discovery still depends on the phone or computer being on the same usable main LAN. Check guest Wi-Fi, VPN, VLAN and client-isolation settings, then update or restart the app and try find.ugnas.com from that same network.

Can a wired NAS work with a Wi-Fi computer?

Yes. Wired versus Wi-Fi is not itself a barrier when both devices are on the same main LAN. Guest SSIDs, separate VLANs, VPN routing and client isolation can prevent communication even when both devices have internet access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the NAS offline if ping fails?

No. A timeout can result from an incorrect IP, an isolated subnet, a firewall rule or ICMP filtering. Test the management page and the specific service by IP, and verify the router address before drawing a hardware conclusion.

Should I disable the firewall to make discovery work?

No. Permit the required discovery or service traffic from the trusted LAN with a narrow rule. Restore any temporary diagnostic change and avoid leaving the NAS, computer or router unprotected.

Do I need SMB, NFS and WebDAV enabled together?

No. Enable the protocol required by the client and configure its share, account permissions and firewall rule. Unneeded services add exposure and do not repair a discovery failure.
