A TV showing No Signal, a blank picture, or an image that repeatedly cuts out usually has a problem with the selected input, source device, cable, or another connection in the signal path—not necessarily a failed screen. Start by checking whether the TV can display its own menu, then isolate one connection at a time. The sequence below covers HDMI, cable and satellite, broadcast channels, and older composite or component connections.

What “No Signal” means

The message means the television is not receiving a usable video signal from the source selected on that input. The source might be a cable box, satellite receiver, disc player, streaming device, game console, or another TV. A loose plug, the wrong input, a sleeping source, an incompatible video format, or an intermediary receiver can all interrupt the path.

Before changing settings, look for the TV’s own home screen or settings menu. If the menu appears, the panel can display its internal interface, so troubleshoot the selected source and its connections first. If even the TV menu is absent, use the support page or manual for the exact model; the checks below are primarily for missing signals from external inputs and do not establish whether a panel, backlight, tuner, or main board has failed.

Fast triage: match the symptom to the first check

What you see Most useful first check What the result tells you
The TV menu appears, but the source is blank Select the input that matches the source’s physical port, then wake the source device The TV itself can render a picture; the fault is more likely in source selection or the signal path
“No Signal” appears immediately after changing inputs Press Input, Source, or TV/Video and try the port actually in use The wrong input or an inactive source is a common cause
The picture disappears only on one broadcast channel Try another channel The problem may be limited to that channel rather than the TV’s entire input path
The picture cuts out when a cable or device moves Turn devices off and reseat both ends of the cable A loose plug or damaged cable is likely; substitution can confirm it
The picture works when the source is connected directly to the TV Bypass the AV receiver or other intermediary, then check its input and pass-through settings The intermediary or its configuration is interrupting the signal
The screen is blank even on the TV home screen Follow the model-specific TV manual and manufacturer support procedure External-input checks alone cannot identify the internal fault

Step 1: Check the source and the selected input

Wake the source device

Turn on the cable box, satellite receiver, disc player, streaming stick, console, or other device that should supply the picture. Confirm that it is not in standby. Some sources take a short time to negotiate a video connection after powering up, so leave both devices on while testing.

Select the matching TV input

Press the button labeled Input, Source, or TV/Video on the remote. Choose the input name that corresponds to the socket used on the back or side of the television: for example, HDMI 1 when the cable is plugged into HDMI 1. Selecting HDMI 2 while the cable is in HDMI 1 will produce a No Signal message even when every device is working.

Test a different source or channel

If you are watching broadcast television, change to another channel. If another source is available, connect or select it. A second source that displays normally points toward the original device, cable, or service rather than the TV display itself.

Step 2: Troubleshoot an HDMI connection

HDMI carries both video and audio, so an HDMI fault can produce a completely blank picture. Test one link at a time rather than changing several settings at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reseat the cable and confirm the port

  1. Turn off the TV and the HDMI source.
  2. Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends.
  3. Inspect the plugs and sockets for visible damage, then push each connector firmly into place.
  4. Turn the devices back on and select the exact HDMI port in use.
  5. If there is still no picture, move the cable to another HDMI input on the TV and select that new input.

A different TV port can reveal a port-specific problem, but changing ports without changing the selected input will simply create another No Signal condition.

Check the source’s video output format

The source must output a format the TV accepts. Sony gives examples in which a device outputs 1080/24p or 1080/30p while a particular television accepts 1080/60p. Open the source device’s display or video settings and choose a format supported by the TV, using the TV manual for the accepted modes. If the source offers an automatic or compatibility setting, try that before selecting a fixed resolution.

Bypass an AV receiver or switch

If the HDMI route is source → AV receiver, soundbar, switch, or another device → TV, disconnect that intermediary for a test. Connect the source directly to the television, select the direct HDMI port, and check the picture. If the direct connection works, restore the intermediary and verify that its selected input is the one carrying the source and that its HDMI signal pass-through or output setting is enabled. A receiver can be powered on yet still be set to a different input or block a format it cannot pass through.

Power-reset both devices

When the cable and input are correct, power-reset the TV and source. Unplug both, wait, reconnect them, and test again. Sony guidance varies by model and page: one procedure specifies 30 seconds, while another says to wait about two minutes. Treat those timings as model-dependent rather than a universal rule, and follow the instructions for your exact TV and source.

Try a known-good HDMI cable

Substitute a cable that is known to work with another device. Sony specifically recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with the HDMI logo for 1080p (50p/60p) output from an external device. Use the replacement as a diagnostic test after reseating the existing cable and trying another TV port; a new cable is not a guaranteed fix if the source or port is at fault.

Reset only as a last resort

A factory reset can clear a persistent configuration error, but it also erases saved picture settings, channel data, accounts, and other preferences. Perform it only after the connection, input, source, format, intermediary, and cable checks have failed, and use the exact reset path in the TV manual. If the HDMI procedure does not restore a picture, manufacturer support may determine that service is required.

Step 3: Check cable or satellite equipment

For a cable or satellite system, there are more connection points than the TV-to-box HDMI link. Inspect the cable entering the building and the cable connecting it to the receiver or cable box. Make sure connectors are tight and the cable is not visibly damaged.

  1. Turn off the TV and receiver or box.
  2. Check the incoming line at the receiver or box and tighten the connector by hand as appropriate for that connector type.
  3. Temporarily remove splitters, signal distributors, or other devices from the path unless your service provider specifically requires them.
  4. Connect the incoming line directly to the receiver or box.
  5. Reconnect the TV to the box, select the box’s HDMI or other output, and test.
  6. If the picture returns, add removed devices back one at a time to identify which interruption causes the loss.
  7. If possible, test with a replacement cable.

If the box itself has no usable picture or service indication after a direct connection, consult the provider or the box’s manual. Do not assume the television is defective before the incoming line and receiver have been isolated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Troubleshoot composite or component cables

Older equipment may use analog composite or component connections instead of HDMI. HDMI instructions do not automatically apply: use the matching analog input and the connection layout shown in the TV manual.

Composite video

Composite systems normally use one video connector plus separate audio connectors. Confirm that the video plug is in the TV’s composite video jack and that the TV is set to the corresponding AV or Video input. A plug in an audio-only jack cannot provide a picture.

Component video

Component systems use separate video connectors and separate audio. Match each color-coded plug to the corresponding input and select the component input, not an HDMI or composite input. Sony notes that analog connection problems can include an interrupted picture or discolored edges; follow the model manual for the exact connector arrangement and supported formats.

When an analog picture is unstable or discolored, reseat every plug, test another compatible cable, and try another source if available. Do not substitute an HDMI cable for an analog connection unless the source and TV both support HDMI and you are intentionally changing the connection method.

Why a picture keeps disappearing after it initially works

Intermittent cable or connector contact

A picture that returns when a plug is touched or a cable is moved suggests an unreliable physical connection. Turn the equipment off, reseat the cable, and substitute a known-good cable. Avoid sharply bending the cable at the connector and check whether the socket itself moves or looks damaged.

Source standby or changing output modes

A source that enters standby, restarts, or changes resolution can make the TV lose the signal temporarily. Confirm that the source remains powered and set to a format the TV accepts. If the source has an automatic resolution mode, compare it with a fixed supported mode.

An intermediary that does not pass the signal consistently

Receivers, switches, splitters, and similar devices add connection points and format handshakes. Test the source directly on the TV. A stable direct picture means the intermediary’s selected input, pass-through setting, power state, or cable should be investigated rather than repeatedly resetting the television.

Incoming cable or satellite path interruptions

For subscription television, a splitter, loose incoming connector, or damaged line can interrupt the signal before it reaches the box. Remove nonessential devices temporarily and test the incoming line directly at the receiver or box.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use one-variable testing to find the failing link

Change only one element between tests and record whether the picture appears. This prevents two simultaneous changes from hiding the cause.

Test Keep constant Change Interpretation
Port test Same source and cable Move the cable to another TV input and select it If only one port works, the original port or its input selection deserves attention
Source test Same TV port and cable Use another known-working source If the second source works, investigate the original source or its output settings
Cable test Same source and TV port Use a known-good compatible cable If the replacement works, the original cable is suspect
Direct-path test Same source and TV Remove the receiver, switch, or splitter If direct connection works, inspect the bypassed device and its settings
Channel test Same broadcast equipment Change channels If only one channel fails, the symptom is not evidence that every TV input is faulty

When the TV menu is also missing

Press the TV’s Menu, Home, or Settings control with external devices disconnected or turned off. If no menu or home screen appears, stop treating the problem as only an HDMI or cable-box issue. Consult the support page and manual for the exact model’s reset and diagnostic instructions. The cited troubleshooting guidance does not provide a universal test that distinguishes a failed panel, backlight, tuner, or main board, so naming one internal part without inspection would be speculative.

When to stop troubleshooting and request service

Contact the TV or source manufacturer after you have checked the selected input, powered the source, tried another channel or source, reseated and substituted cables, tested another TV port, verified the output format, and bypassed intermediary equipment. Keep notes on which combinations worked; telling support that a known-good source works on one port, for example, is more useful than reporting only “No Signal.”

  • Use the manual for the exact model before a factory reset or an unfamiliar menu change.
  • Do not open the TV or attempt internal repairs unless you are qualified to work safely with mains-powered equipment.
  • If the source works directly but not through a receiver or switch, contact the intermediary’s manufacturer or installer.
  • If a cable or satellite box has no service or signal indication after its incoming line is connected directly, contact the service provider.

A persistent blank picture after these isolation tests may require repair, but the available manufacturer guidance does not identify a single internal component as the cause. Preserve your settings and receipts where possible, and provide the model number, source device, connection type, and tests already completed when requesting help.

Practical checks that prevent repeat signal loss

Once the picture returns, leave the system in the configuration that proved reliable and add components back one at a time. Labeling each HDMI cable by source and port can prevent selecting the wrong input later. Keep connectors fully seated and avoid placing strain on sockets from tightly bent cables or heavy devices. If a receiver, switch, or splitter is necessary, test its pass-through with each source rather than assuming that a powered indicator means video is being forwarded.

When a problem is intermittent, note exactly when it occurs: only after the TV wakes from standby, only after changing resolution, only when a particular device is selected, or only on one channel. That pattern helps support staff reproduce the fault. A direct source-to-TV test, a second cable, and a second source are more informative than repeatedly unplugging every device at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my TV say “No Signal” when everything is plugged in?

The TV may be set to the wrong input, or the selected source may be off or in standby. Press Input, Source, or TV/Video and choose the port that physically contains the cable. Then wake the source and test another channel or source. If another source works, investigate the original device, cable, or service.

What should I do if the TV menu works but HDMI does not?

That indicates the TV can render its own interface, so start with the HDMI path. Turn off both devices, reseat the cable, verify the matching HDMI input, try another TV port, and bypass any receiver or switch. If needed, set the source to a video format the TV accepts, such as a supported 1080 mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should I unplug a TV to reset a No Signal problem?

Timing is model-dependent. Sony instructions include both a 30-second unplug interval and a wait of about two minutes on different support pages. Follow the manual for your exact TV and source rather than treating either duration as universal.

Can an AV receiver or splitter cause the picture to disappear?

Yes. An intermediary can be on the wrong input, have pass-through disabled, block a format, or have a loose cable. Connect the source directly to the TV as a test. If that works, restore the intermediary and check its selected input, output, pass-through settings, power state, and cables.

Do I need a new HDMI cable?

First reseat the existing cable and try another TV port. Then substitute a known-good compatible cable. Sony specifies a High-Speed HDMI cable with the HDMI logo for 1080p (50p/60p) from an external device. A replacement is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed cure if the source or TV port is faulty.

Why does cable or satellite TV lose its signal while other inputs work?

Inspect the incoming line to the receiver or box, tighten connections, and look for damage. Temporarily remove splitters or other devices unless the provider requires them, then connect the incoming line directly to the box and test. If service remains absent, contact the provider rather than assuming the TV is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I use red, white, and yellow cables instead of HDMI?

Use the matching composite or component input and select its AV, Video, or Component source. HDMI troubleshooting does not apply automatically. For component connections, match every color-coded video plug and the separate audio plugs. Reseat all connectors and follow the exact layout in the TV manual.

Should I factory-reset the TV when there is no picture?

Only after checking the input, source, cables, ports, output format, and intermediary equipment. A reset can erase picture settings, channel data, accounts, and other preferences. Use the model-specific reset procedure. If the TV menu is absent or the problem persists after isolation tests, contact manufacturer support for service.

The Bottom Line

Start with the simplest isolation: show the TV menu, wake the source, select the matching input, and reseat the connection. Then test one variable at a time—another port, source, cable, or direct path—while checking HDMI output formats and cable or satellite splitters. Factory-reset only as a last resort. If no source works or the TV menu itself is missing, use the exact model’s support procedure and request repair rather than guessing at an internal component.
