The correct menu names and supported modes differ by TCL model, so use your model’s manual rather than assuming every monitor has the same OSD.
Do not buy a new monitor or calibration accessory before completing these checks. The symptoms usually come from a mismatch between the computer’s output and the monitor’s settings, not from a missing part.

First, identify where the problem starts
A blurry or incorrectly colored picture can be caused by the computer, one application, the cable/input path, or the monitor’s own settings. Start by finding out whether the symptom follows the source.

- Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD). Use the monitor’s buttons or joystick to display its own menu. If the OSD text is sharp and its colors look normal, the panel can at least render its internal interface correctly; concentrate first on the computer, application, input, or signal settings.
- Compare more than one application. Look at the desktop, a browser page, and another program. If only one application is affected, check that application’s zoom, rendering, or color settings before changing the monitor.
- Try another input or source if available. If a laptop, game console, or second computer looks correct while one source looks wrong, troubleshoot the affected source and its output settings.
- Record the model and connection. The exact TCL model, Windows version, DisplayPort or HDMI connection, selected resolution, refresh rate, and bit depth determine which controls should be available. If the general procedure does not solve the problem, those details are what TCL support will need.
Changing between applications or inputs is an isolation test, not a guarantee that the panel is defective. A fault that appears in the OSD as well as every source needs model-specific support rather than a guessed universal menu path.

Make text sharp: native resolution first
Soft text and fuzzy edges most often begin with a non-native resolution or an unexpected scaling value. In the computer’s display settings, select the resolution specified for your TCL model. TCL gives these examples: the 27U8 is listed at 3840×2160, while the 34Q8 is listed at 3440×1440. They are examples, not specifications for every TCL monitor.
Use 100% scaling as a diagnostic baseline
Set the operating system’s display scaling to 100% temporarily. This creates a one-to-one clarity check and makes it easier to see whether the output is being enlarged or softened. TCL recommends matching resolution and using 100% scaling for this troubleshooting check.
100% is not a permanent accessibility requirement. If text is too small at native resolution, restore a comfortable scaling value after testing. A higher scale can be the right choice for reading; it simply changes the size of interface elements and may make some older applications look less crisp.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the resolution or scale cannot be selected
When the desired resolution or scaling option is unavailable, verify that the computer recognizes the monitor and that the graphics driver is using the intended input. Then open the monitor OSD and try its Sharpness control, if present. Adjust it gradually: too little sharpness looks soft, while too much creates bright halos around letters and high-contrast edges. The exact control name and range depend on the model.
Do not force the 27U8 or 34Q8 example values onto another TCL display. Use the resolution printed in the model’s specifications or manual, and check that the selected input supports it at the refresh rate you want.
Use Windows display calibration for color and font rendering
For poor color accuracy, weak contrast, or fuzzy font edges after the resolution check, TCL recommends Windows’ built-in display calibration. In Windows, search for “Calibrate display color” and follow the wizard. TCL identifies adjustments for brightness, gamma, contrast, and font sharpness.

What to adjust
- Brightness: Set black levels so dark detail is visible without making the whole image gray.
- Gamma: Corrects the midtone relationship between shadows and highlights. A wrong value can make an image look flat or overly dark even when brightness seems reasonable.
- Contrast: Prevents bright areas from losing detail while keeping the picture from looking dull.
- Font sharpness: Use the wizard’s text-rendering checks to choose the clearest sample for your panel and viewing distance.
The exact screens can differ by Windows release, so rely on the wording shown on your computer rather than an assumed step number. Make changes in normal room lighting and sit at your usual viewing distance. If the display will be used by more than one computer, remember that this calibration is stored on the computer side; repeating it on another machine may be necessary.
Windows calibration cannot correct a monitor mode that is deliberately using a different color space, an unsuitable HDR mode, or a warm OSD preset. Treat it as one layer of the diagnosis, not as a replacement for the monitor’s controls.
Correct a red, yellow, or otherwise tinted picture
Check color temperature in the OSD
TCL says its monitor default color temperature is warm, which may appear red. Open the OSD’s color or picture section and compare the available temperature modes. If a warm preset produces a red or yellow cast, try a normal or cooler option and compare it with a neutral white page.
Preset names vary. Some TCL manuals list Standard, Warm, Cool, and a user mode with separate red, green, and blue controls; other models may expose different labels. Change one control at a time and allow your eyes a moment to adapt before judging the result.
Check your viewing position
Look straight at the center of the screen while comparing white and gray areas. Viewing from above, below, or far to one side can alter perceived color, especially on panels with stronger angle-dependent shifts. TCL specifically recommends a centered viewing position when a red appearance is suspected.

Choose the right color space for the work
A monitor can offer a wide gamut while everyday desktop content is authored for sRGB. A mismatch can make web pages, office documents, and non-color-managed applications appear overly saturated or otherwise inaccurate.
sRGB for ordinary desktop content
TCL directs users to the monitor’s OSD scenario mode to enable sRGB when that mode is available. Use it as a starting point for web, office, and other sRGB-oriented work. It may restrict some of the monitor’s wider-gamut controls; that is expected in a color-space preset.
Other modes are model-specific
Do not assume every TCL display has the same color-space list. The 32R84 manual, for example, lists Standard, Warm, Cool, and user RGB adjustment alongside named color-space options. That documentation does not establish that every TCL model exposes those choices. If you cannot find sRGB or the expected RGB controls, consult the manual for the exact model instead of selecting a similarly named preset at random.

Turn HDR off for SDR desktop work when the image is gray
On a TCL MiniLED monitor connected to a Windows computer, TCL identifies HDR enabled on the Windows desktop as a common situation in which colors appear gray. TCL’s explanation is that HDR is optimized for DCI-P3, while Windows desktop elements and most web pages are designed around sRGB.
Test the HDR setting
- Open Windows display settings and locate the HDR control for the TCL monitor.
- Turn HDR off temporarily while viewing the desktop and ordinary web or office content.
- Compare a white page, gray interface elements, and a familiar photo.
- Turn HDR back on when viewing HDR content or playing an HDR game, then compare again.
This is context-specific guidance for the MiniLED/Windows situation TCL describes, not a universal explanation for every washed-out image. If the monitor is not a MiniLED model, or if the gray appearance occurs only in one application, investigate that application and the selected color space instead of assuming HDR is responsible.

HDR, color space, brightness, and Windows calibration interact. Make the HDR comparison before spending time fine-tuning RGB values; otherwise a later mode change can invalidate the earlier adjustments.
Resolve refresh-rate and color-depth conflicts
Sometimes the picture is not obviously blurry or tinted; instead, the desired resolution, refresh rate, or 10-bit color option cannot be selected together. That can be a connection-bandwidth limit rather than a defective panel.
TCL’s Q8 example
TCL documents a specific Q8 case: 3440×1440 at 170 or 165 Hz, RGB, and 10-bit color is stated to require 26.5 Gbps, while the stated DisplayPort 1.4 bandwidth is 25.92 Gbps. TCL’s suggested trade-offs are 8-bit color at 170 Hz, or 10-bit color at 144 Hz or below.
| Q8 setting | What TCL says | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| 3440×1440, 170/165 Hz, RGB, 10-bit | 26.5 Gbps required; above the stated 25.92 Gbps DP 1.4 bandwidth | Not all of these values can be selected together on that connection |
| 3440×1440, up to 170 Hz, 8-bit | TCL’s first suggested trade-off | High refresh rate is more important than 10-bit output |
| 3440×1440, 144 Hz or below, 10-bit | TCL’s second suggested trade-off | 10-bit output is more important than the highest refresh rate |
These numbers apply to the Q8 configuration TCL describes. Do not transfer them to another TCL model, HDMI, a different cable mode, or another timing. For your monitor, check the exact specification and interface capabilities. If a setting disappears only when another setting is raised, lower refresh rate or bit depth one step and test the image again.
Fix uneven brightness
If the center is brighter while the sides look darker, first adjust the OSD brightness and compare the result across several sources. TCL’s monitor FAQ suggests changing OSD brightness for this pattern.
Recommended Free Tools
Evaluate the screen with a normal image, not only a full-screen black or white test. Room lighting, viewing angle, and the image itself can exaggerate perceived unevenness. If the difference remains conspicuous across inputs and settings, the available TCL guidance does not provide a model-specific repair procedure. Record the model, purchase date, input, and a description of the area affected before contacting TCL support; do not attempt to open the monitor.
Best Value
A practical troubleshooting order
Use this sequence when you want the shortest path through all of the likely settings without changing several variables at once.
- Inspect the OSD and compare sources. Decide whether the issue is monitor-wide, computer-wide, application-specific, or input-specific.
- Set the model’s specified resolution. Use the monitor’s documented native value, not a value borrowed from another TCL model.
- Set scaling to 100% temporarily. Use this as a clarity baseline, then restore a comfortable scale if needed.
- Adjust sharpness only if necessary. Use the OSD sharpness control when the computer cannot expose the intended resolution or scale.
- Run Windows “Calibrate display color.” Work through brightness, gamma, contrast, and font sharpness.
- Check color temperature. If whites are red or yellow, test a less-warm mode while looking straight at the center.
- Check color space. Select sRGB through the OSD scenario mode for sRGB-oriented desktop work when the model offers it.
- Test HDR. On a MiniLED TCL monitor with a gray Windows desktop, compare HDR off for SDR work and on for HDR content or games.
- Check bandwidth. If resolution, refresh rate, and bit depth cannot coexist, consult the exact model’s limits and choose the trade-off that fits your priority.
- Escalate with complete details. Provide the model, operating system, input, cable/interface, selected resolution, refresh rate, bit depth, and whether the OSD is affected.
When the general fix does not work
Do not keep changing presets at random. Return to a known baseline, change one setting, and record the result. A useful record includes the original and new resolution, scale, refresh rate, HDR state, color-temperature mode, color-space mode, and whether the symptom appeared in the OSD.
If the symptom is limited to one source, continue with that source’s graphics and application settings. If every source shows the same problem and the OSD is also affected, use the model’s manual and TCL’s support process for that exact monitor. The title alone does not identify the OSD path, supported color spaces, HDR implementation, or connection limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I always leave Windows scaling at 100% on a TCL monitor?
No. TCL recommends 100% as a diagnostic baseline for one-to-one clarity. After testing, choose the scaling that makes text comfortable to read; native resolution should remain selected.
Why does my TCL monitor look red even after Windows calibration?
Check the monitor’s OSD color-temperature mode and compare it from a centered viewing position. TCL notes that a warm default can appear red; Windows calibration does not replace that monitor-side setting.
Why is a TCL MiniLED monitor gray only on the Windows desktop?
TCL identifies HDR enabled on Windows as a common MiniLED scenario. Compare HDR off for SDR desktop and web content, then enable it again for HDR content or games.
What information should I provide TCL support if these steps fail?
Provide the exact monitor model, operating system, connection and input, selected resolution, refresh rate, bit depth, HDR state, and whether the monitor’s own OSD has the same blur or color cast.
