How to Fix a Surface Pro Touch Screen That Is Not Working

A Surface Pro touchscreen that is completely unresponsive, registers touches in the wrong places, or stopped working after an update should be tested outside Windows before you try a reset or replace any parts. Restart the Surface, install all Windows and optional Surface updates, then test touch in Surface UEFI. If touch fails in UEFI, Microsoft says the touchscreen most likely has a hardware failure and needs service. If touch works in UEFI, the problem is more likely in Windows, the touchscreen driver, or Surface firmware.

The sequence below keeps the higher-risk steps—resetting Windows or replacing hardware—until the evidence justifies them. Keep a USB mouse or keyboard available, because Microsoft notes that an alternate input device may be needed while touch is unavailable.

Start with the hardware-versus-Windows test

Surface Pro touch problems are easier to diagnose when you separate the screen hardware from the Windows software layer. Windows can have a damaged or incorrectly installed touchscreen driver, while a fault in the digitizer or related hardware can affect touch everywhere, including the device’s firmware interface.

Where touch fails What that points to What to do next
Windows only; touch works in Surface UEFI Windows, the touchscreen driver, or Surface firmware Reinstall the touchscreen driver, install Windows and Surface updates, and run Microsoft diagnostics
Surface UEFI as well as Windows Most likely a touchscreen hardware failure Submit a service order and confirm the exact Surface Pro generation before considering parts
Only one region, gesture, or time period is affected The scope and timing need to be established before choosing a repair Record the symptoms, then perform the same UEFI test

Microsoft’s Surface touchscreen guidance uses this same UEFI check as the key decision point. UEFI runs independently of Windows, so it can show whether the touchscreen can detect taps before Windows drivers and settings load.

Before troubleshooting: make the device usable

  • Connect a USB mouse or keyboard if you have one. You may need it to select Windows settings, open Device Manager, or start diagnostics.
  • Disconnect accessories that are not needed for the test, especially anything that could be pressing against the display or obscuring your view of taps.
  • Write down what “not working” means in your case: no touch anywhere, a dead strip or corner, inaccurate taps, unintended (“ghost”) touches, or a failure that began after an update, sleep, or a physical event.
  • If you may eventually need to reset Windows, make sure important files are backed up first. A reset is an escalation step, not a first-line touchscreen fix.

These observations do not prove a cause by themselves. They make the later UEFI result easier to interpret and help a service technician understand whether the failure is complete, localized, intermittent, or associated with a particular event.

Step 1: restart the Surface Pro

Restart the Surface before changing drivers or settings. A restart reloads Windows and its device drivers and is the least disruptive step in the sequence.

  1. Save any open work using the keyboard or mouse.
  2. Use the Windows power menu to choose Restart.
  3. Wait for Windows to finish loading, then test several areas of the screen, including the area that previously failed.

If touch returns after the restart, continue with Windows and Surface updates anyway. A temporary recovery does not establish that the underlying issue is resolved, and current updates are part of Microsoft’s troubleshooting path.

Step 2: install Windows, optional, and Surface updates

Out-of-date Windows components, Surface firmware, or device drivers can leave touch unavailable in Windows. Install ordinary updates and optional updates rather than stopping after the first batch.

  1. Open Settings with the keyboard or mouse.
  2. Open Windows Update.
  3. Turn on the option to receive updates for other Microsoft products when that option is shown.
  4. Select Check for updates, install the available updates, and allow Windows to restart when requested.
  5. Return to Windows Update after the restart and open Advanced options or the optional-update area used by your Windows version.
  6. Install available optional updates, including updates whose names identify Surface or device drivers.
  7. Restart again, then test touch.

Optional updates matter here because a Surface-named driver or firmware update may be offered separately from the main Windows update batch. If the touchscreen stopped responding immediately after an update, do not assume the update is the only cause; complete the UEFI test so you know whether Windows or the hardware is involved.

Step 3: test touch in Surface UEFI

Use Surface UEFI to test the touchscreen without relying on Windows. The test is safe as long as you only tap the visible menu items and leave settings unchanged.

  1. Shut down the Surface Pro completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up button.
  3. While holding Volume Up, press and release the Power button.
  4. Continue holding Volume Up until the Microsoft or Surface logo appears and the UEFI screen opens.
  5. Tap several UEFI menu items in different parts of the display. Test the previously dead region as well as a working region.

UEFI is not Windows. That independence is why this check is more informative than repeatedly restarting the desktop or opening another Windows app. Note whether taps are detected at all, whether only a section responds, and whether unintended touches appear.

What the UEFI result means

If touch does not work in UEFI

A failure in UEFI is the strongest indication in this procedure that the problem is physical rather than a Windows setting. Microsoft states: “If touch does not work on your Surface, your touchscreen most likely experienced a hardware failure. Your next step is to submit a service order.” Follow Microsoft’s service process rather than spending time repeatedly reinstalling Windows drivers.

Before requesting a replacement screen or digitizer, identify the exact Surface Pro generation and model. Parts that fit one generation may not fit another, and a generic “Surface Pro touchscreen” listing does not establish compatibility. A persistent UEFI failure is the point at which professional service or an exact-model replacement becomes relevant.

If touch works in UEFI

Working touch in UEFI means the digitizer can respond outside Windows. The next suspects are the Windows touchscreen device, its driver, Surface firmware, or another Windows-level component. Exit UEFI without changing configuration, let Windows start, and proceed to the driver and diagnostic steps below.

If only part of the UEFI screen responds

Record the exact area that responds and the area that does not. A regional failure still matters because it occurs outside Windows; it should be treated as evidence for service rather than as proof that reinstalling a driver will repair the display. Use the same exact-model check before buying a replacement part.

Step 4: reinstall the touchscreen device in Device Manager

When touch works in UEFI but not in Windows, reinstall the touchscreen device so Windows can detect it again. Use the current Device Manager interface; labels can vary slightly between Windows versions.

  1. Open Device Manager with the keyboard or mouse.
  2. Locate the touchscreen device in the device list and select its uninstall or remove-device command.
  3. Confirm the removal when Windows asks. Do not remove unrelated devices.
  4. Restart the Surface Pro. Windows should detect the touchscreen device again during startup.
  5. After Windows finishes loading, test taps, scrolling, and the region that failed.

If Device Manager shows a yellow warning icon beside a Surface Touch firmware or driver entry, investigate that driver and firmware path rather than treating the icon as a display calibration issue. If the touchscreen device does not return after the restart, continue with Windows Update and Surface diagnostics, and keep the mouse or keyboard connected so you can operate Windows.

Step 5: update Surface firmware and drivers

Windows Update is not the only place to check. The Surface app can show the device’s update status and identify available Surface updates.

  1. Open the Surface app.
  2. Open its Help & support area or update-status screen.
  3. Install every available Surface update, including firmware and driver updates identified for your device.
  4. Restart when prompted and test touch again in Windows.

Install all available Windows updates and optional updates as well as the Surface-named updates. Keeping one category current while skipping the other can leave the software path incomplete. If touch works in UEFI, this combined update-and-driver pass is the principal manual repair route before considering a reset.

Step 6: run Microsoft’s diagnostics

Use Microsoft’s built-in support tools after the driver and update checks. They can identify common Surface problems without immediately erasing your files.

Surface app

  1. Open the Surface app with the mouse or keyboard.
  2. Go to Help & support.
  3. Run the available troubleshooting or diagnostic checks for the touchscreen and device.
  4. Apply any recommended action, restart if requested, and retest touch.

Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

Where it is appropriate for your Surface and Windows installation, run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and follow its prompts. Keep the device connected to power if the toolkit asks you to wait for checks or updates, and record any result that points to a driver, firmware, or hardware problem. The toolkit is a diagnostic step; it does not change the UEFI result that determines whether the touchscreen works outside Windows.

Use the symptom pattern to choose the next branch

The following patterns help organize the evidence without treating a symptom as a diagnosis.

Observed pattern Checks to prioritize Escalation signal
No touch anywhere in Windows Restart; install normal and optional updates; test UEFI; reinstall the touchscreen device if UEFI works Touch also fails in UEFI
Touch works in UEFI but not after Windows starts Device Manager reinstall, Surface firmware and driver updates, Surface app, Diagnostic Toolkit Windows remains unresponsive after the software steps
A strip, corner, or other region is unresponsive Test the same region in UEFI and note its boundaries The same region fails in UEFI
Ghost touches or taps you did not make Test whether the unwanted input appears in UEFI as well as Windows Unwanted input persists in UEFI
The problem appeared after an update Restart, complete all Windows and optional updates, then run the UEFI test and driver reinstall path Failure is present in UEFI, regardless of update timing
The problem appeared after sleep or a restart Restart fully, install pending updates, then compare Windows behavior with UEFI behavior UEFI also cannot detect touch

“Ghost touches” describes the symptom—unwanted or apparently random input—not a confirmed cause. The UEFI test is still the deciding check. If unwanted touches occur only in Windows, continue through the Windows driver, firmware, and diagnostic path; if they occur in UEFI, seek service.

When a reset is justified

Reset this PC is a later escalation for a problem that remains after the UEFI test, driver reinstall, updates, and Microsoft diagnostics. It should not be the first response to a dead touchscreen because a reset cannot repair a digitizer that fails in UEFI.

  1. Back up important files before opening the reset workflow.
  2. Confirm that touch works in UEFI if you are considering a Windows-level reset. A UEFI failure points toward hardware service instead.
  3. Use Windows’ Reset this PC workflow and read each option carefully before confirming.
  4. After Windows is reinstalled or reset, install Windows, optional, and Surface updates before judging the touchscreen result.

If the touchscreen still fails in UEFI, stop treating a reset as the solution and submit a service order. If it works in UEFI but remains unavailable after a clean Windows setup and current drivers, provide the recorded UEFI result and the steps already completed when seeking support.

Service, replacement parts, and safety checks

Persistent UEFI failure is the clearest reason to move from software troubleshooting to service. Microsoft does not publish a universal repair-success rate or a single repair cost for every Surface Pro generation, so do not rely on a generic price or a promised success percentage when deciding what to do next.

  • Confirm the precise Surface Pro generation before ordering a touchscreen or digitizer.
  • Match the replacement part to that exact model; compatibility cannot be inferred from the words “Surface Pro” alone.
  • Describe whether the failure is total, regional, intermittent, inaccurate, or ghost-touch behavior, and state whether it appears in UEFI.
  • Tell the service provider which updates, driver reinstall, Surface app checks, and Diagnostic Toolkit steps you completed.

A device that works in UEFI but not Windows still warrants support if the software sequence does not restore touch. A device that fails in UEFI should be handled as a likely hardware fault rather than subjected to endless driver changes.

Compact decision checklist

  1. Connect a USB mouse or keyboard if touch is unavailable.
  2. Restart the Surface Pro.
  3. Install Windows updates, updates for other Microsoft products when offered, and optional updates.
  4. Shut down and enter UEFI by holding Volume Up while pressing Power.
  5. Tap UEFI menu items in several areas of the display.
  6. If UEFI touch fails, submit a service order and verify the exact model before considering parts.
  7. If UEFI touch works, reinstall the touchscreen device in Device Manager.
  8. Install all Surface firmware and driver updates through Windows Update and the Surface app.
  9. Run the Surface app’s Help & support checks and, where appropriate, the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.
  10. Back up data and consider Reset this PC only after those steps, never as a substitute for servicing a UEFI failure.

This order answers the central question—whether the fault follows the touchscreen into UEFI—before you take a disruptive action. It also preserves the useful evidence a technician needs if the device ultimately requires service.

As an optional shortcut for the driver-focused steps, Outbyte Driver Updater scans more than 100 devices, identifies outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, installs official drivers, shows current and recommended versions, supports driver backup and restore, and offers scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 with a two-day free trial and no credit card, followed by a subscription; results vary and no utility repairs every touch failure.
