A stuck STX transaction is usually still waiting in the Stacks mempool for miner selection and block processing. Start by opening the transaction ID in the Hiro Stacks Explorer mempool, then check its nonce, fee, sender, age and current status. The two fixes that matter most are restoring strict nonce order and, when the nonce is correct but the fee is uncompetitive, using a wallet-supported same-nonce replacement with a higher fee. There is no universal waiting period or ordinary on-chain cancel button.
What a “stuck” STX transaction means
Stacks transactions are processed in sequence for each sender account. A transaction that remains pending has generally been accepted by a node but has not yet been included in a processed block. It can be waiting behind another transaction from the same address, offering too little fee incentive for current miner selection, affected by a short-lived fork, or later removed as conflicting, too expensive, fork-replaced or stale.

Your wallet’s pending badge is only a convenience view. The transaction explorer is the authoritative place to inspect that individual transaction’s current network status. A wallet can retain a local record after a node has dropped a transaction, or hide a transaction that is still in the mempool.

- Open the transaction ID. Use the Hiro Stacks Explorer mempool view on the correct network. Confirm that you are looking at mainnet or testnet as intended.
- Record the sender address. The sender determines the nonce sequence and identifies the account whose queue may be blocking later transactions.
- Record the nonce. Compare the transaction’s nonce with the account’s current expected nonce in the wallet or through the Stacks
fetchNoncepath. - Record the fee and age. Fee competitiveness depends on the estimated fee rate and the serialized transaction size, not simply on the number of STX being sent.
- Read the status and any node reason. Keep evidence of whether it is pending, conflicting, too expensive, fork-replaced or stale before attempting a replacement.

The main causes of a stuck transaction
A missing earlier nonce
Stacks documentation states: “Stacks transactions must be executed strictly in nonce order.” Every transaction from one account has a sequence number. If nonce 18 is pending or missing, a transaction with nonce 19 cannot execute, even if nonce 19 has a higher fee. Submitting nonce 20, 21 and later transactions does not bypass the gap; it adds more work to the account’s queue.

A common pattern is that a wallet displays a later transfer as pending because an earlier transaction was rejected locally, never broadcast, sent from another device or dropped by a node. The apparent problem may therefore be the missing lower nonce rather than the transaction you first noticed.
An uncompetitive fee
Fees are used to incentivize miners to confirm transactions. The relevant fee is tied to the estimated fee rate and the serialized size of the transaction. A larger contract call can require a larger absolute fee than a simple transfer at the same fee rate. If the nonce is correct and the transaction is visible in the mempool but remains unselected, its fee may be less attractive than competing transactions.
Fork, conflict or stale-mempool behavior
Node-level outcomes are not limited to successful confirmation. A transaction can be removed because it conflicts with another transaction, costs more than the account can pay, is replaced after a fork, or becomes stale and is garbage-collected. Community guidance has described short-lived-fork cases in which a pending transaction remains visible until garbage collection and suggested rebroadcasting with a slightly higher fee as a mitigation. That is operational advice, not a protocol guarantee.
Insufficient balance or a crowded account queue
The account must cover both the transfer amount and the transaction fee. A replacement also needs enough STX for its new fee. Stacks technical specifications list a mempool limit of 25 concurrent pending transactions per account. Once an account has a crowded queue, clearing or confirming earlier transactions may be necessary before new transactions can proceed.
Step-by-step recovery procedure
1. Verify the network and transaction status
Check the network selector in your wallet and compare it with the explorer URL you opened. A mainnet transaction ID will not be repaired by sending a testnet transaction, and a testnet balance cannot pay a mainnet fee. In the explorer, confirm the sender address matches your wallet and save a screenshot or copy the displayed fee, nonce and age.

If the explorer already shows a confirmed result, the issue is no longer a pending transaction; inspect the confirmed transaction’s success or failure details instead of attempting a replacement. If it shows a node reason such as conflicting, too expensive, fork-replaced or stale, follow the corresponding branch below.
2. Determine the account’s expected nonce
Use the wallet’s account details or the Stacks fetchNonce path. The official reference describes fetchNonce as checking the Hiro API first and falling back to the core-node account endpoint. Transaction builders fetch the nonce automatically when you do not supply one, but an application that supplies a manually cached nonce can create a gap or collision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare the pending transaction with the account’s expected next nonce. For example, if the account is waiting for nonce 18 and the stuck transaction uses nonce 19, nonce 18 must be found or recreated before nonce 19 can execute. Treat this as an illustrative sequence: use the actual values shown for your account.
3. Repair a nonce gap
- List pending transactions from the same sender and sort them by nonce.
- Identify the lowest nonce that is absent, rejected, or still unresolved.
- Check whether that transaction was sent from another wallet session, browser profile, device or signing service.
- If you still intend to perform that action, recover or resubmit the missing transaction with the correct nonce and a fee your wallet supports.
- Wait for the lower nonce to confirm or for the node to remove it, then recheck the account sequence before touching later transactions.
Do not repeatedly submit higher nonces while the lower one is missing. That cannot bypass strict ordering and can consume the account’s allowance of concurrent pending transactions.
4. Resolve a fee problem with same-nonce replacement
When the nonce is correct, the transaction is still visible, and the fee is not competitive, use the documented replacement flow in your wallet or signing service. Create a new transaction with the same nonce and a higher fee. Keep the intended call parameters unless you deliberately intend to replace the action itself.

Stacks Core labels this same-nonce behavior ReplaceByFee. The exact button or wording differs between wallets, and not every wallet exposes explicit replacement. A replacement is not guaranteed merely because you sign one: the node must accept it, the fee must be affordable, and the replacement must satisfy the transaction rules.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBefore signing, compare the new total cost with the account balance. For a transfer, leave enough STX for the amount and the higher fee. For a contract call, verify the function, arguments and post-condition settings; changing them can produce a different on-chain action rather than simply accelerating the original one.
5. Understand what “cancel” can and cannot do
Stacks does not provide a universal on-chain cancel button for a transaction already submitted. A wallet may be able to supersede a pending transaction by submitting a same-nonce replacement. To act as a cancellation, that replacement might send zero value or perform another action, but only if the signer understands the consequences and the wallet supports the required transaction construction.
Do not send a replacement that changes the recipient, contract call or amount by accident. A same-nonce transaction is a competing transaction, not an edit history. If the original transaction confirms before the replacement is accepted, the original action remains the one that executes.
6. Check balance and the 25-transaction account limit
Review the spendable balance, not just the amount displayed as total holdings. The account needs to pay the transfer or contract amount plus its fee, and a replacement with a higher fee needs additional headroom. If the account has 25 concurrent pending transactions, the technical mempool limit cited for an account, stop creating new ones. Resolve the earliest unresolved nonce first and let the queue shrink.

7. Recheck instead of guessing
After submitting a missing transaction or replacement, return to the explorer and inspect the new transaction ID. Confirm that its sender and nonce are what you intended. A wallet notification that says “sent” proves only that signing or submission completed locally; it does not prove miner selection or block inclusion.
There is no protocol-wide deadline after which every pending transaction must confirm. Fork-related, conflicting, too-expensive and stale transactions can follow different node paths, and wallets can retain or remove their own records at different times. Use the explorer status and nonce sequence rather than a generic promise such as “wait ten minutes.”

| Correct nonce, pending and fee appears uncompetitive | Use a wallet-supported same-nonce replacement with a higher fee. | Yes, when call parameters are kept unchanged. |
| Original action should be abandoned | Use a deliberate same-nonce replacement only when the wallet and signer support it. | No; the replacement intentionally changes the outcome. |

| Account has a crowded pending queue | Resolve the earliest unresolved nonce before creating more transactions. | Depends on which queued actions you retain. |
Common symptoms and precise fixes
“My wallet says pending, but the explorer does not show it”
Check the transaction ID, network and sender address. If the ID is not visible in the relevant mempool view, the wallet may not have broadcast it successfully, may be showing a locally cached record, or the node may already have removed it. Export the signing or submission error from the wallet, then resubmit only after verifying the nonce and balance. Do not create a second transaction blindly if the first might still be accepted.
“A later transaction is stuck behind one I cannot find”
Use the account’s expected nonce and inspect all wallet sessions and devices. The missing lower nonce is the blocker. Recover that transaction if its action is still desired; otherwise, ask whether your wallet supports a deliberate same-nonce replacement for the missing nonce. Sending an even higher nonce only extends the queue.
Recommended Free Tools
“I raised the fee, but the original still appears pending”
Confirm that the replacement used the original nonce, not a newly fetched higher nonce. Check whether the wallet actually submitted the replacement and whether the explorer shows both transaction IDs. Same-nonce replacement is node behavior, not a guaranteed wallet-side deletion: one transaction may remain visible until the node accepts the competing transaction or garbage-collects the stale record.
Best Value
“Can I cancel by sending zero STX to myself?”
Only treat that as a possible cancellation strategy if your wallet explicitly supports same-nonce replacement and you understand the exact serialized transaction. A zero-value or self-directed transaction can still carry a fee and can fail to replace the original if the nonce, fee or other validity conditions are wrong. It is not a universal cancel command.
“How long should I wait?”
Do not use a fixed time as the diagnosis. Check nonce order, explorer visibility, fee competitiveness, balance and queue count. A transaction affected by a short fork or stale-mempool state can disappear through garbage collection, while another remains pending because an earlier nonce is unresolved. The cited technical and community material does not establish one universal deadline.
How to avoid another stuck STX transaction
- Serialize sends from one account. Let the wallet obtain the current nonce rather than relying on a stale value copied from an earlier session.
- Verify the network before signing. Confirm mainnet or testnet in both the wallet and explorer.
- Review the fee and serialized size. Contract calls can be larger than simple transfers, so a fee that worked for one transaction may not be competitive for another.
- Keep balance headroom. Reserve enough STX for the amount, the fee and any same-nonce replacement you may need.
- Monitor the queue. Remember the listed limit of 25 concurrent pending transactions per account and avoid generating a long run of transactions before the earliest ones confirm.
- Save transaction IDs. Keeping the ID, nonce, fee and submission time makes it possible to distinguish a missing broadcast from a genuine mempool delay.
When to contact support
Escalate to the wallet provider or Stacks support when the transaction remains unresolved after the nonce and fee checks, or when the wallet and explorer disagree about its state. Include the transaction ID, sender address, nonce, fee, wallet version, network and screenshots showing the explorer status. Explain whether you attempted a same-nonce replacement and provide both transaction IDs if applicable. This evidence lets support investigate the account sequence and node outcome without asking you to guess which transaction is blocking the queue.
Bottom line
Inspect the transaction on the explorer, identify the sender’s expected nonce, and repair the lowest missing nonce first. If the nonce is correct but the fee is uncompetitive, use a documented same-nonce replacement with a higher fee and enough balance. A normal cancel button does not exist, later nonces cannot jump an earlier gap, and no single waiting time applies to every pending STX transaction.
