Start with the service’s own location check, not a new gadget or paid workaround. Turn off every VPN or proxy on the affected device and network, verify the country the service sees, check your plan and the destination’s service availability, then reset network settings or ask your internet provider to correct its location data if the mismatch remains. A block can mean a VPN/proxy was detected, the service is unavailable in that country, your plan excludes a feature, or the particular title is not licensed there.
First identify what kind of block you have
Travel-related streaming failures look similar, but the remedy depends on the message and what still works. Write down the service, device, subscription plan, country you are visiting, and the exact wording on screen before changing settings.

Why traveling changes what you can watch
Streaming rights are negotiated by territory. Netflix says the titles available to you, audio and subtitle options, maturity ratings, and download choices can differ by country. Items in My List and Continue Watching may also be unavailable after you cross a border. Disney+ similarly limits viewing to content available in the region where you are connecting.
That means a successful sign-in does not promise the same library you had at home. A missing title is evidence of a regional catalog difference only when the rest of the service works normally. It does not, by itself, prove that your account, device, or home subscription is broken.

A VPN can create the opposite of the result a traveler expects. By routing traffic through another country, it can make the service see a location different from the one where you and the device actually are. Netflix says it may then restrict viewing to titles with worldwide rights. Netflix also states that VPNs are not supported for live events or for ad-supported experiences.
Fix the block in this order
- Capture the exact error and context. Note whether every title fails or only one, whether the app works on another connection, the device model, your plan type, and the destination country. A service can be offered in one country but not another, and a plan can impose a separate restriction.
- Find every VPN or proxy. Inspect the device’s VPN setting and any VPN application. Check security or antivirus software because some products include a VPN that is easy to overlook. Also inspect the network or router configuration: a VPN may be applied to the whole network rather than to one app. Turn these services off, reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, and try again.
- For Netflix, test the apparent country on the same network. Open Fast.com on a device connected to the affected network. Select Show more info and read the Client country value. If it differs from the country where you are physically connecting, Netflix says a VPN is likely active. Disable it, reconnect, and retry the title.
- Check plan and feature limits. Confirm that the subscription supports the feature you are attempting to use. Netflix specifically says VPNs are unsupported for ad-supported experiences and live events. A failure limited to those features can therefore persist even when ordinary on-demand playback works.
- Reset the device’s network settings if the mismatch continues. Use the device’s built-in network reset option, then join the Wi-Fi network again and re-enter its password. This removes stale network, DNS, and proxy settings but may also erase saved networks, so have those credentials available.
- Restore modem or router settings only when necessary. If the problem affects every device on the network, review the router’s VPN, proxy, and custom DNS settings. Restore its defaults when you can safely reconfigure the connection afterward. Do not reset equipment supplied by an employer, hotel, or landlord without permission.
- Escalate with precise evidence. If Fast.com still reports the wrong client country, give your internet provider that country and the displayed IP address. Ask the provider to verify that the IP is assigned to your actual location and to correct its geolocation records if needed. Netflix notes that the provider may need to work with Netflix to resolve the mismatch.
Netflix: the official VPN/proxy path
When the VPN message appears
The documented Netflix message is: “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.” Follow the checks above rather than repeatedly signing out or changing profiles. Netflix’s guidance is that you may need to turn off a VPN to see shows and movies available in your region.
Look beyond a deliberately installed VPN app. An antivirus package can contain a VPN, and a router can route all household traffic through one. Hotel, workplace, school, or public Wi-Fi may also apply network policies that alter routing. Test with a different connection, such as mobile data, only as a diagnostic comparison; a different result indicates that the original network deserves attention, not that the destination catalog has changed.

When Fast.com shows the wrong country
Use the same connection that produces the Netflix error. Fast.com’s Show more info panel identifies the client country Netflix can infer from the connection. A different country points to VPN/proxy routing or inaccurate provider geolocation. Turn off the routing service first. If the value remains wrong, save the IP address and contact the provider before assuming that your Netflix account has moved.
When only certain Netflix features fail
Netflix says VPNs are not supported for live events or ad-supported experiences. A plan change may therefore be relevant when standard, on-demand playback succeeds but one of those features does not. Do not infer that every title is blocked or that the account is unusable from a single feature failure.
When your Netflix account appears tied to home
Traveling does not change the account country. Netflix says, “The country on your account can’t be changed unless you move to a new one.” A trip to another country is therefore not a reason to edit billing or account-country details. If you actually move, follow Netflix’s account and payment instructions for the new country rather than trying to simulate a move with a VPN.

Disney+: location errors and offline preparation
Error Code 73
Disney+’s Error Code 73 guidance identifies VPN or similar location-altering methods as a cause. Disable those services, close and restart the app, and try again on the ordinary local connection. The same guidance lists access from an unsupported country or region as another possible cause. If the destination is not supported, changing device settings cannot create legal availability; contact Disney+ support if the error remains in a supported location after the VPN check.

Downloads before departure
Disney+ advises downloading supported titles to a mobile device before travel when offline viewing is available. Check the download icon while you are still at home, allow the download to complete, and open the app at least once so the account and license state are current. Downloads are a contingency for selected titles and plans; they do not unlock a foreign catalog or guarantee that every downloaded item will remain playable indefinitely.
If the service works but your shows are missing
Separate playback from catalog rights. If the home screen loads, searches respond, and unrelated titles play, first treat the missing item as a regional availability question. Check the title’s listing in the destination, look for alternate audio or subtitle options, and inspect whether the item is absent only from My List or Continue Watching. Netflix explicitly warns that those personal lists can contain titles unavailable in the country you are visiting.

Do not delete profiles, cancel a subscription, or repeatedly reinstall the app to solve a rights difference. Those actions do not change territorial licensing. A title that is unavailable abroad may return when you connect from your usual country, subject to the service’s current rights and your plan.

A short trip
Keep the account and billing country unchanged. Use the service under the destination’s rules, accept that the catalog may differ, and rely on supported downloads prepared before departure when available.
A second home or frequent travel
Netflix recommends establishing a connection at the main location monthly and repeating the steps at the second location for frequent travel to another home. This is an account-use procedure, not a way to change the country or bypass licensing. Connect normally from the primary location, then use the second location without a VPN and repeat the service’s verification steps if prompted.
An actual permanent move
If you have relocated rather than traveled, treat it as an account-country change governed by the service. Follow its official move, payment, and availability instructions. Do not describe a temporary trip as a move merely to obtain another catalog.

What not to assume
- “I am traveling, so the app is broken.” A different catalog, rating, subtitle set, or download list can be normal in another country.
- “A VPN will restore my home catalog.” Netflix says VPN use can trigger the warning and may limit playback to globally licensed titles.
- “Changing the account country fixes a trip.” Netflix says the country cannot be changed unless you move.
- “A download unlocks everything abroad.” Offline viewing is limited to supported titles, plans, devices, and licensing conditions.
- “The IP address proves the service is wrong.” The important comparison is between the service’s apparent country and your actual connection location. An incorrectly geolocated IP needs provider verification.
- “Resetting everything is the first step.” Record the error and check VPNs first; a network reset can erase saved Wi-Fi and proxy settings.
Prepare before your next trip
- Check whether the streaming service operates in the destination.
- Review the plan for ad-supported, live-event, and download restrictions.
- Download selected mobile titles while at home when the service supports it.
- Open the app before departure and confirm that downloads complete.
- Know where the device and router VPN/proxy controls are located.
- Keep your home network credentials available in case a reset is required.
- If you use a second home regularly, connect from the main location monthly as Netflix recommends.
Bottom line
Work from evidence: identify the exact message, remove VPN and proxy routing, check the apparent country on the affected network, and separate a catalog difference from a true connection failure. For Netflix, Fast.com’s client-country result and the plan’s feature rules provide the clearest next checks. For Disney+, disable location-altering services, restart after Error Code 73, and prepare supported downloads before leaving. If the detected country remains wrong after network resets, give your provider the client country and IP address so it can correct the location data. No troubleshooting step can make a service or title available in a country where its rights or service coverage do not permit it.
