If a Steam game will not start, troubleshoot the launch path first; if it starts but ignores your gamepad, troubleshoot controller detection and in-game input separately. Restart the computer and Steam, update the operating system and relevant drivers, verify the game files, then test the controller in Steam’s own settings before changing game configurations. The exact fix depends on your operating system, game, controller model, connection type, error message and whether the title uses an external launcher.
First identify which failure you have
“The game will not launch” and “the game launches but does not recognize my controller” are different problems. A game can fail before its executable opens, open to a launcher and stop there, or run normally while input is routed to the wrong device. Use the symptom that matches what you see:

Record the operating system (Windows, Linux or macOS), the game’s exact title, the controller model, whether it is wired, Bluetooth or receiver-connected, and the complete error text. Those details determine which branch is safe to use.

- Restart the computer. Steam’s controller guidance explicitly recommends restarting the devices involved: “Restart the devices you’re having trouble with to see whether this resolves the issue you’re experiencing.” A restart clears a stuck game process, USB state and temporary driver failure.
- Exit and reopen Steam. If the problem remains after the computer restart, quit Steam completely rather than only closing its window, then start it again and retest.
- Install pending platform updates. Apply available Windows, Linux or macOS updates. Also install relevant graphics, chipset, Bluetooth and controller firmware updates supplied for your hardware. Do not assume a controller firmware update is interchangeable between models.
- Disconnect unneeded input devices. For a controller test, leave only the gamepad and the keyboard or mouse you need. Multiple gamepads, wheels, virtual devices and accessibility peripherals can change which device a game selects.
These checks do not erase saves or reset game settings. Avoid deleting configuration folders until you have preserved any local settings and confirmed that cloud synchronization is complete.

Fix a Steam game that will not launch
1. Confirm that the game supports your operating system
Open the game’s Steam store page and compare its listed operating-system support and system requirements with your computer. Check the required operating system version, processor, memory, graphics hardware and available storage. Being at or only slightly above a minimum requirement can still be associated with launch or performance problems; a “minimum” specification is not a guarantee that every configuration will start reliably.
On Linux, first determine whether the title has a native Linux build. If it does not, Steam Play/Proton compatibility is game-specific. A title can work with one Proton version and fail with another, or have an issue that affects only its launcher, video playback or anti-cheat component. Treat Proton as a compatibility layer to test, not as a guaranteed repair.
2. Verify the installed files
Corrupted, incomplete or unexpectedly changed files are a common reason for a game to close immediately. Use Steam’s built-in check:
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then start the game from the Library.
Steam warns that the check can take several minutes. One or more local configuration files may fail verification normally because those files are generated or customized on your computer; Steam says such configuration-file results can be ignored. Do not interrupt the check or launch the game until Steam reports that it has completed.
3. Close software that can interfere
Temporarily close non-essential background applications and retest. Examples include capture and overlay utilities, hardware-monitoring tools, input remappers, virtual-controller software and other programs that hook into a game window. Close only software you recognize, and restore your usual applications one at a time after the game launches so you can identify a conflict without guessing.

Do not disable security protection wholesale. If the error is a missing executable, inspect your antivirus or endpoint-security detection history and quarantine. A security product may have removed a legitimate game executable, but restoring a file is safe only after you have confirmed that it belongs to the game and came from a trusted installation. If you cannot establish that, leave the file quarantined and contact the game developer or Steam Support rather than overriding the detection.
4. Recover from “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
This exact error means Steam cannot find the executable it expects at launch. The cause may be antivirus quarantine, an incomplete download or corrupted files.

- Restart the computer and Steam.
- Check antivirus detections and quarantine for the game executable. Note the filename and detection reason.
- If the file is confirmed to be legitimate, use the security product’s restore or allow function according to its documentation.
- Return to Library > game > Properties > Installed Files and run Verify integrity of game files.
- Launch the game again. If Steam downloads a replacement file, allow that download to finish before testing.
If the error persists, submit a Steam Support ticket for the missing-executable problem. Include an uncropped screenshot of the complete error, a Steam System Report and a list of conflicting programs you already removed. An uncropped image preserves details support may need, such as the full title, path and error wording.
5. Use the correct Linux branch
For a native Linux title, apply Linux and graphics-driver updates, verify files and close interfering software just as you would on another platform. For a Windows title running through Proton, check the game’s Steam Play discussion for title-specific compatibility information and consult the Proton bug database when the behavior appears to be a compatibility defect. A Proton report is more useful when it identifies the game version, distribution, graphics driver, Proton version and exact failure point.
6. Escalate a launch failure with useful evidence
If restarting, updating, checking requirements, verifying files and closing conflicts do not help, Steam’s general guidance is to contact the game’s developer for case-specific diagnosis. Provide the operating system and version, hardware summary, game version, exact error, whether the game ever showed a window, verification result and any launcher or anti-cheat message. Do not claim that a reinstall is the next universal step: reinstalling repeats a large download and may not change a driver, security or compatibility problem.

Fix a controller that Steam or the game does not recognize
1. Find the failure point in Steam
Open Steam’s controller settings before changing the game’s control layout. The current Steam Controller guide exposes connection information at Settings > Controller > Details. The key question is whether the controller appears there:
- Absent from Steam: troubleshoot power, pairing, cable, receiver, Bluetooth and firmware.
- Visible in Steam but absent in the game: troubleshoot Steam Overlay, supported input style, conflicting utilities and device priority.
- Visible and responsive in Steam but mapped incorrectly in the game: inspect the game’s input mode and the active Steam configuration.
Test in Steam first so you know whether the operating system and Steam can communicate with the device before you alter an individual game.
2. Match the connection method to the controller
Connection advice is model-specific. The current Steam Controller guide describes three modes for that controller: its included Puck receiver, Bluetooth and wired USB-C. It does not mean every gamepad supports all three methods.
- Receiver: confirm the Puck is connected, the controller is powered and the receiver is not blocked by a metal case, hub or other obstruction.
- Bluetooth: remove stale pairings if your operating system shows a failed or duplicate entry, then pair the controller again using the model’s documented procedure.
- Wired USB-C: use a known-good USB-C data cable and a direct port when the controller supports wired USB-C. A charge-only cable can power a device without carrying input data.
A cable test is diagnostic, not a universal fix. It cannot repair an unrelated game-launch failure, and it does not apply to controllers that lack wired USB-C input.
3. Restart, update and check signal quality
Restart the controller, receiver or Bluetooth adapter, and computer. Install available Steam, operating-system and controller-firmware updates. For a Steam Controller using the Puck, inspect the reported signal strength and line of sight. Move the receiver away from likely interference sources and remove obstructions between the receiver and controller. Test again from a normal playing position rather than directly beside the computer only.

4. If Steam sees it but the game does not
First check whether Steam Overlay opens in the game. Overlay support is part of the route Steam uses for many controller configurations; a game that does not expose a working overlay may not receive the expected remapped input.
Next, confirm that the active configuration uses an input type the game supports. Some games expect XInput-style input, while others expose native support for a particular controller family or use a different control API. A configuration can be valid in Steam yet produce no usable buttons in a game that does not accept that input type.
Temporarily close suspected conflicts, including XInput emulators, capture software and other utilities that intercept controller input. Retest after each change. If the game works with one utility closed, re-enable programs individually to identify the conflict instead of leaving unrelated software disabled permanently.
5. Test with only one gamepad connected
Disconnect other controllers, wheels, flight sticks, virtual gamepads and unusual input devices, then relaunch the game. Some titles select the first device they discover or assign player one to a different device when several are present. Once the correct controller works alone, reconnect other devices one at a time if you need them.

For a title purchased outside Steam, add its game executable to the Steam library and try launching it through Steam. This can provide Steam’s controller configuration and, where supported, its Overlay. It does not convert every external title into a fully compatible Steam game.

Compatibility varies with the game, its launcher and its anti-cheat system. An independent launcher that requires administrator rights may not accept input from a Steam-launched process. Some anti-cheat solutions reject overlays or injected input, and games without Steam Overlay support cannot use features that depend on that overlay. If the external launcher opens separately, test the controller in that launcher’s own settings as well as in Steam.
Keep the executable path current if the launcher updates or moves the game. Adding a shortcut to a launcher rather than the game itself can change which process receives Steam Input, so test both arrangements only when the game’s documentation permits it.

How to isolate a stubborn problem without making it worse
- Change one variable at a time. For example, verify files and test before changing the controller configuration. Otherwise you cannot tell which change mattered.
- Keep a short test record. Note the game, operating system, controller mode, whether Steam sees the device, whether Overlay opens and the exact error text.
- Use a controlled launch. Start Steam, leave non-essential overlays and remappers closed, connect one controller, then launch the game. Add devices and utilities back only after a successful test.
- Preserve evidence before reinstalling. Capture the complete error, save the verification result and record antivirus detections. Reinstalling can remove the evidence that explains why an executable disappeared.
- Separate game failure from controller failure. If the game still will not open with the controller disconnected, solve the launch problem first. If it launches but input fails only after the controller is connected, return to the controller branch.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not treat a controller that is visible in Steam as proof that every game supports its input method.
- Do not restore an antivirus-quarantined executable without confirming that it is a legitimate game file.
- Do not assume a charging cable carries data, or that a controller supports Bluetooth, receiver and wired modes simultaneously.
- Do not leave several virtual and physical controllers connected during the first diagnostic test.
- Do not report only “it does not work” to support. Include the exact error, operating system, game, controller, connection type and steps already completed.
When to contact Steam or the game developer
Contact the game developer when the general launch checklist fails and the problem appears specific to that title, its launcher or its anti-cheat component. Contact Steam Support for the specific missing-executable path or when Steam itself cannot complete installation, verification or controller detection. For a missing executable, include the uncropped error screenshot, Steam System Report and the list of conflicting programs you removed, as Steam requests.
For controller cases, state whether the device is absent from Settings > Controller > Details or merely fails after the game starts. That distinction directs support toward connection diagnostics versus Overlay, configuration and game compatibility. A precise report is more actionable than repeating generic reinstalls.
